I went for a dip manicure. The nail artist made 7/10 cuticles bleed and continued on until I finally said something. She did a sloppy job and 1/2 the nails came out smudged. I went back in the next day to have the messed up ones corrected, and they now look worse than before. She added several more coats to one nail, and it simply looks chunky and awful. I feel like I was discussed amongst colleagues, and she laughed before saying she was done (they still looked bad and she knew it). Would not recommend to anyone! read more

I tried this nail salon because it is closer to my house than my usual place. Unfortunately I won't be going back. Most important: they don't have a book or wheel of swatches for gel color and asked me to pick a color just from the bottles. This is not a good way to pick gel color of course since its very hard to tell what it will look like. I was just randomly opening bottles to look at the color, and they were not organized in any reasonable way so it was very difficult to find what I was looking for. Second, the nail techs were not helpful and did not seem to know their own color inventory -- I showed them a picture of roughly the color I wanted but they could not find anything remotely similar. They also were very reluctant to help me with colors even when I asked, twice. There were four nail techs in the salon, including the one doing my nails, and no other customers. My nails look ok, but both the mani and pedi felt a bit rushed without much attention to detail. read more

My sister had a terrible experience at this salon over the weekend. She has been a loyal customer for several years. I even went to this salon for a while based on her recommendation. During her most recent visit, she was completely disrespected and ignored because she forgot to officially cancel a service even though she still showed up at the salon with someone else who was receiving a service as well. Disclaimer: I thought I kept more photos of my nails that I had done here so sorry about the cropped / zoomed in photos I screenshotted. I always went to Thu or Kim because they were the only two that consistently could do my shape. They take directions EXTREMELY well and I've never walked out unhappy. You also have a week "warranty" on your nails if any break or chip. I've been going here over two years and am so sad I've moved across the country. 10/10 recommend this place and their spa pedicures are *chefs kiss* worth the upcharge from the basic pedicure. Gave it a few tries, but this last visit the nail tech did a crummy job then straight up stole from me as other techs watched. After I paid for my basic shellac manicure at the front cash register (a $40 service, took 30-minutes), I went to tip my nail tech but only had a $20 bill so asked if she could make change. She said yes. I handed her a $20 and asked for $10 back. She said thank you then ran toward the back room. I said wait I need my change, and again said can I please have $10 back. She said "I don't understand" like there was suddenly a language barrier (no problem during the manicure), then ran into a back room and never came back. I asked the woman and man who seem to run the show there if they could get her or my change, but they just ignored me. I always tip at least 20% for nail services even if it isn't great but she helped herself to a 50% tip for a pretty meh mani. The manicure initially looked ok, but the curing light boxes were gross--dirty, had tons of caked-on nail polish inside, looked like they had never been cleaned. She also kept pulling my hands out well before the light turned off to slap on another coat. The whole thing took less than 30 minutes from taking off my initial polish to stealing a tip she wasn't offered. A decent shellac manicure usually lasts me a week or two. This one started chipping off on the sides and tips in less than 24 hours and was a total mess in just a few days. I tried to reach out to the salon directly about this situation but they never returned my call. It had me wondering whether this was a common scheme they pull. read more

Can you believe I paid 55 WHOLE dollars to leave the nail salon BLEEDING!!!!!!!!! I am entirely disappointed with the service I received at this nail salon. At the beginning things seemed to be fine and then the MANAGER OR OWNER of this establishment decided to take over my pedicure and cut my cuticles while doing it I told her it was hurting and she stopped but it was too late. She already left a huge gash in the side of my toe. She kept putting the green stuff and tissue but it continued to bleed. She said sorry and that was it. I understand that mistakes happen but this is unacceptable to pay full price for. I believe I could've been offered a courtesy percentage off. I never have high expectations for the first time I try a new nail salon but Modern Nail Bar really exceeded my expectations. I called and made an appointment when they first opened for about 6pm. They were already busy but took me at 6pm exactly. I wanted to keep the same color but I had done my nails at a different location so they helped me find the right color, it took two seconds to find and she was right on the money. Kim, who is the manager, did my nails today and they look amazing. She dipped the base then the color three times, which makes the nail thicker. Usually I don't like the thick look but my nails did not come out thick by any means. Kim was detail oriented and didn't miss a single thing. My nails came out even, the color was perfect, and the top coat completely covered the nail. These are the issues I usually spot when I get home but I have no complaints this time. I will return to this salon and highly recommend it to others. read more

This is the first nail salon I have been to since COVID hit, and I am glad it was! The staff has taken plenty of precautions to prevent the spread including mandatory mask wear, temperature checks, and plenty of clear dividers between all patrons. As for the actual service, I'm really happy with my nails! I asked for a very trendy multi-colored French manicure and my nail woman did not disappoint! The staff was also super helpful helping me find all the colors to match the inspiration photo I shared with them. Went here with a friend and she called in to make an appointment to get sculptured nails (which on their website they claim to do) but when we arrived her technician had no clue how to do that and began doing acrylic tips... that was our first red flag. My technician was nice but filed my nails so much that now hours later, I am sitting at home and my nails are so tender, sore and puffy! I can barely use them & have to take a pain killer for the pain and discomfort. I am very disappointed with the whole experience, the nail tech who did my nails was very polite and nice. But as a paying customer I am not happy about how my nails turned out. I got my nails done on Wednesday a day before I had to leave for vacation. From the beginning I asked for a design and acrylic gel nails. I got there at 10am and left at 12:30 with no design because I had to go to work. That's fine but it took way to long to do my nails. I get home and show my boyfriend and the first thing he says is " why do they look like you got them done weeks ago." They were not properly done. And as a result on my vacation my middle finger nail fell off. It lasted only 4 days. All other nails were basically coming off from the bottom. Once one fell all followed. I really enjoyed my pedicure here and was super satisfied that I was able to walk in on a Saturday and be taken right away. My nail tech was friendly and did a good job. What I didn't enjoy was the payment. When I got up to the register to pay the woman told me it was $34. Before I got there I saw online it was $32 so I went and checked the pamphlet right next to her and it said $33. Yes it's only a matter of a couple of dollars but now I've been quoted three different prices. I mentioned this and she said it's $34, the pamphlet is wrong. Okay whatever not a huge deal. But then I showed her my 10% off yelp deal which should have left my total at $30.60. She consulted with the woman next to her and charged me $32 which was not the full 10%. Recently moved to the area and thought to give a new nail place a try. I got a gel manicure and a regular pedicure. The pedicure was fantastic, but the manicure was lack luster. In fact, the gel polish on my thumb nail peeled off within 24 hours and one week later others are cracking and peeling off. Would go back for just a pedicure. read more

I really like this salon, and usually I have great service and my nails come out beautiful. But this is the second time I had a nail tech (same tech both times) destroy my nails! The first time, she was obviously training and had a seasoned nail tech with her so I tried to cut her some slack (although I def shouldn't have been charged full price). I went back yesterday and when I walked in and she was "assigned" to do my nails, I thought "okay, she's probably been fully trained now". I asked her to remove the gel that was currently on and change the color. She foiled my nails and then immediately pulled them off and tried to scrap the old gel off. The foils clearly needed to be left on longer but she kept scrapping away. When that didn't work, she turned to filing it off. My nails are now so so thin! She then proceeded to start the new gel color even with leftover color still on them! I had to ask her to remove the rest of the color before she started the new color! It looked terrible. If I can make appts in the future with someone other than her, I will go back. But please be weary of who your nail tech is here. They clearly don't train them fully. I unfortunately did not get her name, but she is older, short dark hair and dark rimmed glasses. read more

UPDATE: Returned to this salon for what I expected to be a regular gel fill. The owner remembered me from three weeks ago when I went for a fill before vacation. She was so nice! I'm attending a 90s themed birthday party tonight, and decided to get something bright and over the top for the occasion (especially now that my new work environment isn't nearly as formal). I've never been to this salon but booked an appointment online for a gel manicure listed as $38 (see attached appointment confirmation and online screenshot of the website below). I left work early and arrived two minutes late due to an unexpected downpour hitting the area. I come in and upon entering, the staff of the salon collectively looked up and for a second no one spoke. Finally, a technician asked me how she could help. I told her that I have a 4:15 appointment for a gel manicure and gave her my name. She seemed confused by my overshare, gave me an odd look, but then said someone would be with me shortly. The place was lovely and I did not have to wait long. My technician, overall, was just fine. I don't name her because she was nice (she did scrawl her name on the receipt but I've cropped it out). We exchanged smiles and brief small talk but it seemed a quiet place so I remained mostly quiet - but for smiles and answers to her prompts. Soon, I began to notice that she was flying through my manicure. Between the time I arrived and the time I left, I saw people enter but very few exit. I found this odd but let her continue. This isn't my regular beauty service, and I have only gotten a gel manicure one other time (2 weeks ago, at another location near my parents' house. It's about 45 minutes away so not the most convenient) so maybe that is the normal pace. Then, I noticed cotton leftovers on some of my nails, most noticeably on my thumb. I waited to see if she'd properly clean it off, but no. Layer after layer, she could not be bothered to remove it. The reason I am giving 2 stars instead of 1 is because I chose not to speak up. I did not speak up for two reasons. 1) I plan on changing the polish color to something more everyday and was unwilling to nitpick and 2) I often feel like as the only black woman in a space like that, that I must be careful not to make waves. I was already stared at like I was lost as I entered, with no one speaking for an uncomfortably long 30 seconds and no acknowledgement of the appointment I booked. I also did not want to make waves by seeming difficult. And again, my tech was perfectly nice. When I went to check out my tech gave me a price of $40. The website lists $38. This is a two dollar difference and not significant...accept for when combined with the rush job on my nails, cotton visible on my thumb, and being blatantly watched as I'm being checked out - I tend to think it was deliberate. I asked her if I could tip on the card and she and another tech - who walked up to watch me like I was there to steal nail polish - both seemed startled. As an aside, my brother works in a restaurant and tips make all the difference. No one in my family leaves anything less than 20% because we believe it's disrespectful to the person giving the service, yes, even a shoddily done service. Also, prior to working at my current job as a legal editor, I was a labor and employment attorney - so I really do believe in tipping. What I don't believe in is unexplained charges even by just a couple dollars to, I guess, make sure the tech gets something for her work. So, I just subtracted what tip I was planning to give and added it to the total. All of a sudden my tech is interested in seeing me in 2 weeks. She keeps repeating, "I'll see you in two weeks? I'll see you in two weeks!" Now everyone is all smiles. I wish I could say this is the first time I've been offered shoddy service because someone believes I'll tip poorly due to the darker color of my skin. I've been looking to keep gel manicures a regular treat and considered returning. But as I walked away it just didn't sit right with me. I should be greeted like I'm welcome, like I made an appointment ahead of time, which I did. I should not be on the receiving end of a rush job. I also should not be charged more without an explanation. I should not be watched as though I do not belong. I'm happy with my overall manicure. I was going for Lisa Frank vibes for this party...and again, it's a lovely place. I'm sure those of a lighter hue will enjoy it even more. I've been coming Modern Nail Bar off and on for several months. I'm very pleased with the gel manicures. First, there is a huge selection of polish, both gel and regular. Technicians sit along the bar so there's quite a few spaces and appear to always have a good amount of staff on hand. Several pedicure chairs as well. In the past, I've had a pedicure and it was nice as well. Second, they do happy hour! If you come between 11 am - 4 pm weekdays they will give you a discount (15% off gel nails). This is great! I use the schedule tool, although I think it's not required, to come in around my lunch break. The technicians stick by their work. They give you a copy of your receipt and if it chips within two weeks they claim they will repair the nail. I've not actually had to do this,but it feels good to know they expect it to last! I try to see Hoa, but have also gone in to the next available technician. I've not had anyone that's been bad. They offer you water and are very helpful in picking colors - which i appreciate when looking at a huge selection! read more

It wasn't a particularly busy time, but the people working on our feet seemed rushed and were chatting and laughing in another language, which I find rude--I speak foreign languages and know better than to speak them in front of those who don't. The man working on my foot was very rough and sliced my skin under my big toe. He knew it and I pointed it out but he didn't do anything about it. I felt I didn't get the same type of pedicure that I have received at other bars. Especially the "cheese grader" to the bottom of the foot treatment. They did use a nail brush...? along the top of my foot for whatever reason. That didn't feel good at all. Plus later that evening it felt like my legs had severe sunburn. I've never had that happen before. Normally, I am offered an (adult) beverage at other establishments. Here they offered me water. Reluctant four stars because my nails look good. Experience-wise though, was pretty disappointed. Let me preface this with: they have a REALLY great copywriter. I work in marketing... I write copy. Yet, their descriptions on the website effectively tricked me into thinking this would be a really unique and novel experience. It's a completely normal nail salon. Do not let the awesome-seeming bar theme mislead you. They probably would have gotten five stars from me if they'd actually offered complimentary drinks, but I was in a markedly worse mood after not being offered any of the wine from the bottles deceptively adorning the counters. I'd read in other reviews that they offer you  wine, so I was really looking forward to that part, and halfway through my pedicure I was so annoyed that I half-jokingly asked if the wine cost extra. She told me they don't give out the wine anymore, which I really want to believe is true. PUT THE WINE AWAY IF WE CAN'T ACTUALLY HAVE IT. The other option is she just didn't like me, but again, I want to give her the benefit of the doubt. "Fuzzy navel" pedicure was fine, but don't be fooled into thinking you're paying an extra $30 for anything but some peach-scented lotion and oil. House pedicure would have been totally sufficient. The saving grace was the fact that my acrylics came out well. I don't know how to feel other than convinced that actual cocktails should have been involved in this somehow. read more
