Unfortunately they are far and few. With the good ratings and the appeal of the spaciousness of the salon I decided to make the call and see if I could find what I was looking for. Ivy, I believe the owner (or the manager?) immediately said ask for TT when I came in. TT gave me one of the best pedis I've had. She had a small tool which helps get to the edges of the nail where pain happens over time and did a gentle and very thorough job on all my nails. She was easy to talk to and understanding as well. I have found my salon and tech. I'm thrilled!

I had a feeling my partner might propose that night, and I wanted my nails to look nice. I decided to try gelx for the first time, and I guess this was a huge mistake. It BURNED like no other under the lamp, omg. They looked nice enough though, and the tech warned me it would burn, so I figured it had to be normal. As soon as I got home, I lost my pinky nail. It just fell right off. By the end of the night, I had lost two more nails. Turns out I was right and he DID propose that night lol which is of course wonderful, but I wasn't able to show off my hands for pictures like I wanted (photo included). By Wednesday, even more had fallen off. I called and explained what was going on and they had me in by the end of the week for a redo, this time with dip powder. It was much better overall--my manicurist was sweet and really took her time, even though this was a complimentary service. However, I was a bit disappointed in the general shaping. She applied tips but didn't follow the natural curve of my nail--a few of them curved up quite noticeably, which can cause separation between the real nail and the false nail. As for today, I came in with the inspiration picture included below--sort of a muted pink/neutral French mani with chrome or some sort of high gloss finish. I showed the tech, and she said she's got it. Well, she looks at my toes and asks if she should use those same colors (French with stark white tips and a chrome finish). I say the main color is good for the fingernails, but the tip should be more pink. She nods like she understands. She starts painting my nails and goes in with the same white polish. I figure I should trust the process, but I ask if she's planning to go over the white with something pink. She says no. I'm confused, but I decide it isn't the end of the world if my tips are white. I notice the white tip on my thumb isn't symmetrical. I try to be straightforward and ask for "more white" on the left side. She looks at the nails side by side and brings out a file to adjust the shape. I think maybe she just couldn't understand me very well. She's about to finish it them off with the same silvery chrome I have on my toes, and I make one last attempt to get something close to the picture. I ask if they have a light pink instead. She runs off, comes back, and does a test nail. It looks a bit pinker, so I say we can use it on the rest. By the time I see them all done, I realize it has a pink-GREEN duo chrome shift. Kind of fun, would be good for a Wicked themed set, but sooooo not what I wanted and not what I asked for. I didn't feel like I could say anything because the tech was already rushing off to complete a waxing service. They were busy and I think my appointment put them a bit behind. Another manicurist I'd worked with previously comes over to take a look, and I think she could tell I wasn't happy. She says I should request her next time. She's always done a great job, so I think I'll have to stick with her from now on. Shout-out to Lee! Or maybe it's Lilo, I'm not 100% sure. I used to feel like I could count on this place to always deliver, but now it seems like you have to stick with your regular artists or risk getting a disappointing result. I wish I could turn back time and request dip powder nails from Lilo on the day of my engagement :( it still bugs me that I had such a manicure fail on the one day I really wanted my nails to look their best. Oh well.

I do not mind-spending this amount of money to get my nails if the quality and craftsmanship is worth it unfortunately under these circumstances it just wasn't there. Also my nails were burning for about an hour and a half after I left I've never experienced anything like that before. I don't know if it was a different product that may have been used that my nails weren't used to, or what but it's something to note. The rhinestones are pretty and The nails aren't completely horrible but the shape of them is just not up to par with what you would expect when going to a nail salon. I feel like the skill level is just not there and a lot more practice is needed. I also came in with a broken nail paid five bucks to have it fixed but the nail tip that was used was a clear nail tip meanwhile the rest of the tips that I have on my nails are not clear so I have this one nail on my finger that does not match any of my other nine nails. I was not discounted for this at all. I would not mind paying 40 bucks for what I received today but $80 was completely overpriced for what I received and I won't be returning, sadly. The whole experience was a little Bizzarre and uncomfortable. I did give three stars for the ease in setting up the appointment and Dolly also seemed like a nice person.

DO NOT COME HERE!! I used to come here all the time as a teen (mind you I'm in my late 20's now) to get my clear acrylic nails with lot of designs which I loved and had a specific nail tech (older woman, T) who only did my nails, usually end up paying about $40+ each time. But I stopped getting acrylics for a long while now so I stopped coming in and also I moved to Oakland, so this mediocre nail shop is just another nails shop compared to Oakland. Any who over the years I'd come back to Modern here and there for an occasional mani and/or pedi. I came in a week ago to a GEL mani pedi and the nail tech I used to did mine nails and omg it was the CRAPPIEST job EVER!! She barely knew how to take off my old gel polish... Every shop singly wrap each of your fingers in foil with acetone but file off a thin layer of the gel prior. She told me just to soak my hands in the acetone liquid... My gel didnt budge... So after she got my polish off you just filed my nails square and proceeded to put layers of the polish on my nails. She did not even give me a mani!! She didnt cut any dead skin off or anything!!! After my nails went through all the in and out the gel lamp thing she just massaged my hand and all done. She didnt even have me wash my hands... Use alcohol to wipe n clean the lotion off my nails... Oh btw. She did the WORST gel polish job I've ever seen!!! Thick and polish was all in my cracks (she didnt clean well after polishing). When I got home 3 of my nails broke!! Within a couple days I could see little cracks in my polish!! HORRIBLE job!!! NEVER COMING BACK!! I gave them a $2 tip but it was really for the lady who did my pedicure. My nail lady didn't deserve nothing!! read more

It took me a long time to find this nail salon, but now it's safe to say that I will NEVER go to another. I love getting mani-pedis but absolutely dread the sound, the sight and the feel of being filed down. Not surprisingly, the manicurists I visited before coming to this place dreaded me equally because I would jump and squirm uncontrollably in my seat. A few months ago, on visit to a friend in San Pablo, I decided to walk in for a man-pedi when I drove by this shop. The shop was crowded, but somehow that appealed to me, so I waited close to an hour for my turn. Mary, the manicurist who worked on me, was AMAZING! I told her my weird phobia and she took the gentlest of care to shape my nails using a buffer (rather than traditional file). At the end of the hour, I was a cleanly manicured, totally grateful and satisfied customer. If you come to this place looking for 5-star ambience complete with candle-lit serenity, you will be disappointed. But if you want friendly professionals working on your fingers and toes, this place is for you! read more

This place is great! the prices are reasonable the service is great. My nails stay on 2-3 weeks before my next fill. Their hand designs are gorgeous, and their glitter tips are beautiful. There is a wait but that just means their good at what they do so they have a lot of customers. The ladies are friendly and very skilled. People come from across the bay to get their nails done there! so obviously they know what they're doing. E.T. if you don't like the wait then make an appointment that's what they're for. If you come in and they have people already you have to get in line. It's like this at any professional establishment. If they skip everyone to accommodate you what kind of professionalism is that? If you don't want to go to a place that has a big clientel then you should go to a nail salon that sucks at what they do and have no customer therefore no wait. Modern nails has been my routine nail shop for over two years. I feel like home here it's not getting nails done. They are Nice, welcoming, and not to mention amazing. Their nail designs are really amazing. It's real talent. I recommend modern nails to everyone. There add also very affordable. They have various designs from shatter to marble to glitter powder tips. My mom has been going to Mary ever since she was a teenager, and never goes no where else. Every time she goes , Mary knows exactly how to please her. Tran does my nails, and she is amazing. I then asked her if she can take it off because I already knew I wasn't going to like it. She then wanted me to pay $30. I called Helen over and asked how it was fair for me to pay more than half when I'm not even leaving with my toes done. She then said "Fine give me $20 and then you can leave." She then took off my polish with the drill and made me bleed on my toe from how rough she was drilling. I left with all my toes red and irritated.

Well, when I walked into the door, she took one look at my mom and said IN FRONT of EVERYONE, "I am sorry, but when you made the appointment for your mom, I didn't know it was for her. Your mom is NOT RIGHT in the head, so I don't want to do her nails." I have never been so hurt, humiliated, and sad for my 80-year-old mother, who has no control over this disease. I was in SHOCK, and so were the other ladies in the shop. She was so rude and cold. I told her we will leave, but please know I will leave a review and pray for you in the meantime. My mom was so confused about what had just happened, I had to turn my head to NOT let her see me crying. This is just plan discrimination. SO sad that a place like this is still open.
