We hired Modern Renovations to replace our roof. The materials sat at our home for two weeks without anyone reaching out to us to schedule them to be installed. When we decided to finally reach out to them to see what the next plan of action was, the woman on the phone seemed like it was such a burden to schedule an appointment for me. The roof was finally installed a week later but shortly afterwards we noticed a few shingles flapping in the wind. We were unable to get ahold of anyone on the phone and was often left listening to "please leave a voicemail" so I decided to reach out via Facebook which also took some time to receive a response. When we did receive a response instead of the woman being apologetic she was defensive and actually said "well this is our busy season and we don't prefer communication via Facebook" maybe someone should ANSWER THE PHONE THEN! Even after all this we still supported them and referred them to other people and now we are really regretful of that. A few days ago we received a bill that said we owed them for the roof they put on over a year ago. When we called for clarification my husband left a voicemail and received a call shortly there after from someone who said they had an invoice issue and to call Monday and they would resolve it. Mind you the invoice had a handwritten note on it for us to call them immediately so obviously they saw this an investigated it before it went out. Luckily for us we paid with a check but we feel bad for the people who paid cash and didn't keep their receipts for over a year and also for the elderly who may not think twice about whether they paid it and will unknowingly cut this business another check for services they already paid for. To add insult to injury we ended up with a BAT INFESTATION due to a large hole left on the back of our house where the dormer roof met the other part of the roof. The hole was so big you could fit a soft ball through it. Imagine the horror of hearing 100s of bats scratching in your ceiling. If I could give zero stars I would! Modern Renovations, Martinsburg WV replaced my roof in 2019, I was sold on their warranty of workmanship and product. My painters noticed a leak in my upstairs bathroom. I called Modern Renovations to come out and inspect the roof, I suspected it may be faulty boots and flashing around my vent pipes. After many many phone calls and no-shows for scheduled appts a roofer from MR finally came out, Franklin. He went into my attic and said that it was not the roof and the leak was caused by another source. Franklin did not got onto my roof. I have had multiple contractors out tying to find the "other source" , I have spent thousands of dollars and countless hours trying to find the source of the leak. I hired a plumber to look at my pipes in the attic, had A.S.K. Heating HVAC replace ductwork in my attic, I had my attic re-insulated by Comfenergy and still the leak surfaced. One of the techs for the insulation noticed my vent pipe was allowing a lot of sun light in and said it was not normal. "If light can get in so can water" I contacted Modern Renovations once again and they finally said they would replace the boots and flashing. I had an appointment scheduled. On the day of my appointment I contacted and spoke to Franklin Cabrera, owner of MR who said he was sending a tech out to replace the boots and flashing. I took time off work and once again no one ever showed up to make the repair. This back and forth with Modern Renovation, Martinsburg WV has been ongoing with NO RESULTS. I contacted another roofing company HighPoint Roofing WV who performed a roof inspection and was able to confirm my suspicion of the boots and flashing being the issue. HighPoint provided a recommendation and I have contracted them to repair Modern Renovations shoddy work. I have reported Modern Renovation to the BBB and will be considering my legal options in suing them. This company is unprofessional and their work is questionable. Sadly this company is in the business of taking advantage of old ladies rather than roofing. My now deceased elderly mother who was on disability prior to her passing, contracted (and trusted) Modern Renovations in January 2020 to do a full roof replacement. As we have now learned, Modern Renovations subcontracted the job out to a third party roofer and they did an absolute hack job, taking many short cuts. The third party contractor spent less than 1 day removing the old roof and installing the new one on a 2000 square foot home. Within days it rained, and It was immediately apparent that the job was not done properly. Suffice to say, the roof leaked so much water that my elderly mother (who lived alone) had to stay up all night just to empty buckets every time it rained. My mother tried repeatedly for the last year and a half to contact Modern Renovations for them to repair the roof. She even sent certified letters to no avail. It's grossly apparent that this company took the money and had no intentions of honoring the warranty as set forth in the contract. Mother passed away before she could have the issue resolved and in her final year on this planet, she lived in a cold dank house, emptying buckets of water because some contractor thought they could take advantage of an old lady. Now my family is STILL trying to get satisfaction from Modern Renovations to complete the job that they were contracted to do. The water damage is extensive in an upstairs room, including damaged carpet, walls and subfloor. There is now mold that also needs remediation. We removed the damage insulation and ceiling tiles and you could literally see daylight through a hole in the roof. Furthermore, when the contractor cut in the ridge vent, they stuffed all the splintered plywood cuttings, old shingles etc down into the attic leaving a huge mess to clean up. How did they expect an old lady would get her christmas decorations out of the attic when they were covered in nails and splintered wood? The lack of respect and professionalism that was shown on this job is astonishing. (And you better believe we have pictures of everything) We have been more than patient, reaching out for nearly a month now (not including the time my mother tried) to give them an opportunity to rectify the situation. However after many, many attempts, it's clear that Modern Renovations is being extremely evasive and has no intentions of honoring the contract. We are now pursuing legal action unless the situation is resolved IMMEDIATELY. I can recommend with certainty that this company is NOT your choice for your next roof. I will, in the spirit of good faith, be happy to revise this review if they honor the contract by coming back to finish the job properly. read more

I wish I had checked Yelp before doing business with Modern Renovations. I don't know who wrote their 5 star Google reviews but I would not recommend this company for roof work. They have a nice slick sales presentation but everything after the presentation was less than professional. -- How long until you can start? Two weeks. Wrong, it was 5 weeks. -- How long will the job take? 1 day with a crew of 10. Wrong. Two full days, working into the dark with a crew of 5. The crews are all subcontractors and the company does not provide any sort of supervision. My property was not cleaned property and I have several pounds of nails that I picked up in addition to old shingles and trash. The work was sloppy. If I hadn't gone up on the roof to see the work, it would have been left that way. To their credit, they did come back and fix what I had to point out but If the homeowner has to point out sloppy roofing work, then this is not the company you want to use. read more

Shawn and his team took the time to visit my mother's house, really listen to her concerns and then provided us with multiple cost options to choose from, so we could choose the one that was best for us. Once we agreed on what to do, the team went above and beyond. These guys aren't roofers: they're craftsmen. They're artisans. Hell, they're artists. They transformed my mom's house from an eyesore on her road into a showpiece. Cars passing by slow down to get a better a look now. I recently decided to add a mudroom to my kitchen entrance of my house..the professional contractor I hired started taking down some vinyl that Modern Renovations installed a year ago. Come to find out..Modern Renovation workers installed my vinyl WITHOUT the moisture barrier on my plywood. They put NO wrap up to protect from moisture which would prevent any mold on my plywood. I will now have to get my new vinyl taken off so new contractor can wrap my house then reinstall the vinyl. I will be looking to pursue a legal remedy for ALL the money I paid and believe me...it was pricey. Please do not use this company. They also have terrible customer service and the shorter owner blew his temper more than once with me. read more

I hired Modern Renovations to install windows in my home. For two of my windows, they left gaps at the base of the windows so that my home was exposed to the outside. Air and water were able to get in under the windows. For two weeks, the only persons I was able to speak to were the front desk secretaries. The installer finally called me back, refused to acknowledge any problems with his construction, yelled at me, and hung up on me. I have emailed the estimator, Shawn, and have attempted to reach him numerous times by phone and have yet to speak with him. Do not hire this company. It is very difficult to get a hold of anyone if there is a problem. And if there is a problem, the installer will deny all responsibility and refuse to listen to the customer's concerns. read more

They didn't do any work for me.i wanted a quote for an architectural roof and a metal roof. I wasn't sure if I could afford the metal so I wanted a ball park figure per square, She would not provide it. She became very irritated and asked if I wanted to meet the guy or not. The woman on the phone was insistant on having her guy give me a sales pitch. I said I do not want to waste anyones time working up an estimate, she said she didn't care if I wasted their time, my reply was I care if I waste mine. She didn't like that and became extra short. The day of the appointment I realized I would not be able to make it, I was going to have a long day at work. I called at 7;30 am and got the voice mail. I advised them I would not make it and would have to reschedule. She called back after 8,with what im sure is her normal F-off attitude, and said "what can I do for you, were not even open yet". Needless to say, I did not call to reschedule, nor did I answer their follow up calls. If this is the attitude for potential customers, I can only imagine how it would be trying to resolve a problem after the job was complete. No thank you. read more

We had a man from modern renovations come to our house a little over a week ago to do an estimate for siding our home and large garage. The first thing he said is in Berkeley Springs you can get these little one man operations to do the work cheaper. Well even though that is true, we want the work done and over with now, not 3 months from now. My husband thought this was very condescending and believe me we took that route, either no call or never showed up and god forbid over hunting season. So this man never called back, never sent an estimate. We have 2 estimates in, one same day, the other over a couple days. My husband called yesterday to modern renovation looking for the estimate, they could not locate him, said would have call, no call. Do you really think I am going to use this company, that would be a big fat No. looking at the reviews, probably a very good thing. We were going to add roofing too, but guess Kline siding and roofing or the family owned business Hedgesville will have our business. I've been working with Modern Renovations for the past few weeks while they replaced the existing standing seam metal roof on my 1920's home in Charles Town. From the start - they were responsive, knowledgeable and professional. Jonathan, the sales rep, met me at the home and priced both shingle and standing seam. He was knowledgeable, answering my questions and providing great service. Although the standing seam was, naturally, more expensive - the house deserved a full restoration to its original glory. The work speaks for itself. Even with some expected rain delays, the team kept me up-to-date on the progress of the roof and the end result is perfect. The home now has a beautiful, long-lasting standing seam roof that will protect the home for decades to come. I was so pleased that I also had them replace and update the fascia and soffit around the entire house as well. Sandra was excellent - serving as the main point of contact and staying in constant contact. I will use Modern Renovations again as I continue to renovate my home and would recommend them to anyone looking for quality, local home improvement work. read more
