You pick one of two rice options then one of two bean/legume options, a small serving of stewed meat option (they often have a hot vegetable like okra as well), a side order like yuca or plantains, a salad which could be a cucumber tomato avocado medley or variations on macaroni or potato salad. Second to last stop is choice of sauces I recommend the green creamy hot sauce though please use sparingly. Sometimes they have a dessert like flan or rice pudding or coconut pudding or carrot pudding you get the idea. They also always have three choices of very tasty exotic fruit juice punches. The food was good but they need to find a better way to keep it HOT because it's buffet style . The red beans were not that good actually they needed better seasoning and I have tasted Dominican and Puerto Rican food in New York State not just NYC and even the beans are amazing. I have lived almost all my life in Puerto Rico and since I moved to TN I have been trying to find a good puertorrican restaurant. Merengue is flavorful, and their mofongo is good but not the best I have tried. Also, some dishes like "ropa vieja" l, I have tried better somewhere else. Their prices are ok, more into the expensive side. Being from PR you get dishes at similar or cheaper price and the quantity served is bigger but cant complain, at least this restaurant serves good hispanic food. So when someone told me there was a Puerto Rican restaurant here my eyes opened up and i go so excited. So here i am enjoying a good homemade mofongo, pastelillo and kola champagne. My heart is full. We were in Nashville from NOLA looking for a dog-friendly place that wasn't pizza, BBQ, or bar food. We were happy to find Merengue come up as a possibility. The staff were friendly and accommodating in explaining the menu options. We opted for the combo platters so we could try a variety of items and were happy that we did. The plates were as generous as they were flavorful. My partner had the pork while I had the chicken. Both were fall off the bone tender. He had the lentils and I the pinto beans. Over 100 reviews and five stars?? I was skeptical, but I get it now. Merengue Cafe was exactly what my friends and I needed today. It was rainy and dreary, and we were all hungry. The restaurant is clean and cheery, the staff is attentive, friendly and incredibly helpful. The food is LEGIT. A delightful taste of the Caribbean. I sampled a little bit of everything because I couldn't decide and I wasn't disappointed. Their rice and peas/beans are delicious! Order from the buffet and get your food right away. I absolutely love this restaurant! I've visited a few times before writing this review. Each visit, the service and food has been exceptional. The servers are pleasant and helpful, especially if you don't know what to order. The restaurant is clean and spacious. They also have an outside patio. Everything I've tried has been delicious. I want this to serve as a warning for any newcomers to this restaurant. When I went in, I asked if they had Cuban pressed sandwiches, which is very standard for a Cuban place - at least in South Florida. The guy behind the counter said no, but (he briefly looked me up and down) and said we have some food for beginners. I don't take offense easily, and I didn't here. I just thought the Yelp world should know if you're a white male, you're a "beginner" at eating Spanish food. Even if you grew up in Miami. As for the value of this place - the money you will pay for what you get is very out of balance. I paid $16+ for a plantain smashed into a bowl (with the plantain strings smashed in there too), 8 small/medium tail-on shrimp, and 1/4 cup of sauce. The flavors were ok, but I was basically eating a coconut curryish flavored fried plantain. Along with the smashed plantain were two small slices of avocado...if only they had been ripe. About 15 minutes after I ate their food my stomach was not doing so well, and I began to have a splitting headache. This is the same feeling as if I had eaten something with MSG. I don't know if that's what it is, but I think you know the feeling I'm talking about. My stomach now feels tight and my headache is still here - 2 hours later. Here's the shakedown - This place has been designed to take hipsters money. Specifically, in debt hipsters which want to live the hipster life others are envious of by going to the "in" places. This is basically a Chipotle on crack. If you're really looking for Spanish food - go 2 miles east to 41. Almost any place over there (there's even a little Ethiopian place) will be better and more worth it to eat at. They probably even have pressed Cuban sandwiches! read more

Really solid meal! Merengue Cafe has a cafeteria style setup where you pick your proteins and sides from the steam table, so if you're looking for a quick meal, it's definitely very convenient. They also have other menu items that come from the kitchen, so don't be afraid to ask about something on the menu board that isn't on the steam table. During my first visit, I just went for the basics - chicken with rice, pintos, and avocado salad. For the price, you get a ton of food. Everything was flavorful, and the chicken was tender (not boneless, for those who want to know). We also ordered a few empanadas, which are made fresh in the kitchen. One beef, chicken, cheese and sweet guava. These empanadas have a flour based shell, but were flaky and delicious. I rounded out my meal with guanabana juice, and I left happy and full. Look, when it comes to plantain I am very picky. Mangu is something people mess up so easy, but this Mangu is far from messed up. OMG! First of all, the portions! I have been to restaurants where they even cut the cheese super thin to make it for a bunch of people. Merengue Café is NOT one of those. Portion was perfect for the price. Second, I will talk about the taste. I would like to thank the person who made my mangu. I think I shed a tear while eating. Because it was just heaven in my mouth. Everything was just perfect. I couldn't stop eating even tho I was full, and when I finally stopped, I put it away and ate the rest the next morning. The Mangu was amazing! Third, the service was great. The girls at the counter were very polite and helpful. The restaurant was really clean and I felt like I was back home. I had a completely different experience here than other reviewers, unfortunately. I went here with a meetup.com group for dinner (about 16 of us), so we had a larger party. But, they have a Chipotle-style set up where you can create your meal from a line of prepared items behind a glass, or you can order separately from a menu. Typically, this setup lends itself pretty well to larger groups, but my food took an hour to come out. I ordered from the menu and initially asked for a Cuban sandwich but was told they didn't have those (need to take them off the menu), so I got Tostones con Camarones al Ajillo (fried plantains with garlic shrimp). I enjoyed the shrimp, but the plantains were very bland. People who ordered the buffet-style meals didn't get their orders for a while either though, which was odd because the whole idea of that setup is to make the order as you go. Maybe they were just having an off night because it seems like others had great experiences, but this is a no-go for me. read more

Customer service was A1. Friendly and food looked very fresh at the buffet like set up. S/O ordered the Tostones Camarones. Very good and I had the pescado al Coco. Sauce was so tasteful. After going here twice my opinion still stands, this is some of the best food I have ever tasted. i found merengue cafe by accident after my usual Latin place was closed on the 4th of July and i could not be more excited about it . We had the yellow rice , meatballs, beef ribs, plantains, and avocado salad and it was all fresh and seasoned to perfection . The rice was just right , not mushy or hard, the meat was tender and the plantains were not slimy or overly oily. We also had the pineapple and guava juice and it was a huge hit with everyone . The second time we had the black beans and rice ,beef ribs ,stuffed chicken, and mofongo with roast pork . We were not disappointed at all! The owner is super nice and very helpful and personable . She didn't try to make you buy more than you wanted and didn't mind letting me taste things that I wasn't familiar with. This will definitely be a weekly spot for us !! read more

Nashville has a new Puerto Rican/Dominican/Cuban restaurant in the 100 Oaks area; I could see this place rockin' during business lunch hours as well as doing a decent early dinner crowd. Knowing absolutely nothing about these types of cuisines we decided to give it a whirl. Upon entry I immediately noticed a comfortable well-maintained presence to the service line and dining area. The young man behind the line noticed our clueless appearance and enthusiastically gave us a rundown of the various items on the menu, I wish I had asked more questions. It turned out that he was the son of the owner. I ordered a plate consisting of seasoned chicken, broccoli, rice and beans, and white beans. I did need to season the food with a little salt and pepper and the homemade green sauce made the chicken even better. The white beans were like a thick soup and were the co-star of the meal, along with the chicken. It was evident that a lot of care and attention went into the preparation of the food, although I would not order the broccoli next time. And there will be a next time. Some constructive suggestions - some lighting immediately where the entrance is and in the parking lot. The restaurant was hard to spot as we arrived and the steps went further than the handrail. Also the parking lot is sloped and, after my accident in October I was paranoid about falling down again. I hope Nashville takes a liking to Meringue, the family who owns the restaurant are very pleasant and eager to please. Nashville could use more people like this family. read more

Driving into Berry Hill, you would never expect to find the Caribbean, but lucky for us there's a friendly, authentic Puerto Rican and Dominican cuisine just down the corner at Merengue Cafe! My absolute favorite thing about this place is how it's just brimming with kindness and enthusiasm. They want you to love their food but also to connect with their culture. Vegan options- YES. My absolute favorite thing was the eggplant empanadas - just incredibly flavorful. The plantains from the picaderas were PERFECT. They had a red and green sauce to try - both were delicious but make sure you have plenty of water - or my favorite tamarind juice- with that green sauce because it's . Very family friendly environment, good amount of parking outside the restaurant and plenty more along the street as well. Unfortunately lots of single use plastics for cups and sauces and no composting options, so hoping for more progress on those initiatives.
