My partner and I have gone here for dinner many times and we're never disappointed. The consistency in quality is ace. In my opinion it's one of the best fried chickens around. This time we got the mini fried chicken, braised beef curry, and large aonori fries. Fried chicken, as always, was delectably crispy on the outside, juicy and tender on the inside, and is perfectly seasoned. Has my soft mouth ever tasted such a better chicken wonder? The chicken is the reason to come here! You used to be able to get four different sauces free of charge, but now if you want different sauce flavours, it's 75¢ each. I like the shio garlic lemon or Japanese mayonnaise. The braised beef curry wasn't as good as I expected but it was okay. The braised beef itself was really tender and delicious, but the curry was too watery and the flavour wasn't my preference. There was also nothing other than the beef (no vegetables). I've had much better and cheaper elsewhere. The aonori fries are also a must have for me! They're fries covered in aonori, which is a flakey seaweed. It goes so perfectly with fries. They give a tartar sauce to dip the fries in. Get the large if you're sharing and are a fry addict--the small won't be enough. These fries are skinny like McDonald's fries, but sooo much better. Perfectly crisp. Service is always friendly and efficient. It's a small shop so it can become quite lively when it's full. They always have covers of popular songs going in the background. read more

Very quiet on a Saturday evening. Our meals were a solid 7.5 out of 10. I ordered curry with Mogu fried chicken. The curry was smooth and the fried chicken was hot, crispy and extremely juicy. There was a tiny kale salad on the side, which didn't seem all that fresh and was just okay. The husband ordered the Braised Shortrib Stone Bowl. At $24, the portion seemed a bit small for the price, but he liked the flavours. The servers were kind and attentive to our needs. I'd come back for the fried chicken. read more

This is maybe my 5th or 6th time coming to Mogu, and it truly never disappoints! The quality and consistency of their fried chicken is top notch, and I find myself craving it often. My friend and I started off by sharing the spicy garlic fries with tartar sauce. I love the way these fries are thinly cut, with the right amount of crisp and lightness to them. It wasn't saturated with oil, and the tartar sauce was perfect. I'd recommend the smaller size to share with 2 people - plus we had leftovers! I had the 3 piece chicken Teishoku - which comes with miso soup, rice, a side (today was seaweed salad), and choice of salad (I chose the Mogu salad). I was disappointed that now each additional chicken sauce cost $0.75 extra, as it used to be unlimited. Understandable though! I got the Japanese mayo, and my friend got the spicy gochujang sesame. We shared and mixed these sauces to dip the chicken. The chicken was perfectly crispy on the outside, and tender and moist on the inside. It is a must to order here. I liked the miso soup, but found it slightly too salty. The Mogu salad was hearty! Lots of kale and tasty dressing. I ended up having leftovers for my lunch tomorrow - I'm very excited! For those unaware, Mogu Fried Chicken started out as a food truck. Their specialty is Japanese style fried chicken. They're located next to Bombay Kitchen + Bar. No wait as there's plenty of seating inside along with three small tables on their sidewalk patio. Service was excellent; your typical sweet, friendly Japanese service. The menu consists of salads & first bites, Mogu fried chicken, katsu, Japanese curry and noodles & rice. The drink menu is extensive. Trip #1 - Japanese curry chicken katsu ($22.00) - salad was healthy. Chicken katsu had a good breading and bite to it. Curry sauce was homey and well balanced. - Garlic beef & scallions stir fry udon ($15.00) - udon had a satisfying chewy bite, excellent flavours. Well executed dish. Trip #2 - Spicy garlic fries ($6.50 large) - fries could be crispier. Decent. - Mogu fried chicken ($23.00 regular) - opted for the chicken only option with spicy gochujang sesame sauce. Our order had 11 pieces. They nail their fried chicken; not greasy, good crunch and equally tender & moist. The chicken is made of delicious juicy thigh meet and the outer batter is super crispy. The curry mac salad we were concerned would be too curry forward, but it wasn't - very subtle in flavor and overall very good. If there was one tiny slight critique, we wish everything came with just a tiny pinch more salt and that we got a bit more sauce as the amount of Japanese mayo was a bit on the low side. read more

Tried the fried shrimp burger with fries and their fried chicken. We originally weren't planning to get any fried chicken (I know, why go to a chicken place if you didn't want chicken? lol). But after seeing a steaming plate of fried chicken move past us, we knew we had to get it. The chicken was juicy and crispy. And the sauces it comes with (you can get all of them if you want) gives it more flavour. We had to bring some home as we had leftovers and the chicken was still juicy the next day. OMG when I bit into my first piece of Mogu fried chicken I couldn't believe how moist and juicy it was inside and how nicely crispy it was outside. It's unbelievable. Amongst the best Karaage I've ever had. Note to KFC fans - Mogu's pieces are sized like Karaage - they are much bigger than Korean chicken pieces. I ordered two jumbo size boxes for my family of 5 because usually that's how much we order from KFC places but it's kind of a mistake - we have like 1.5 boxes of chicken left to finish now for the next few days. I would say one jumbo box is more than enough for our family of 5. And our kids LOVE fried chicken. Mogus chicken is different from KFC in that you don't have the different flavors baked into the skin. Instead you have different sauces. The Mayo is really good, I also like the soy garlic lemon. Skip the tartar. Their salad is also really really good. As are their ainori fries. We didn't even have their katsu's, curries and other things yet. Can't wait to go back and try them. read more

COVID #13 No more food truck. They finally made a brick and mortar shop away from their Dunsmuir and Howe Street mainstay location DT. YAY, I can sit down and enjoy their food instead of eating on the run while walking around. It's smallish place, seating maybe 25 people max non-COVID. COVID is probably more like 10-15 so be prepared for takeout. They do open late, so maybe do that if you want to dine in. The menu is more expanded than the food truck I tried quite some time ago. Downlow Chicken has competition for fried chicken supremacy. On September 1, 2020, war was declared on Commercial Drive. At stake: fried chicken market share. The new upstart is Mogu Fried Chicken, a name that might be familiar to those who've seen their food trucks circulating since 2012. Now, they have opened up across the street from the incumbent, and current champion: Downlow Chicken Shack. It's a battle of Spicy versus Savory. East versus West. Not everyone can handle the ghost-chili-pepper-hotness of Downlow Chicken. Some people prefer a milder, but flavorful fried chicken that's really crispy. For those customers, Mogu has you covered. If you'd prefer rice over french fries, Mogu is the place to go. Their chicken is essentially larger pieces of chicken karaage. But, because of their larger size, the chicken retains its moistness inside and stays juicy. Price-wise, I'd say it's a draw. Portions seem smaller at Mogu, but then you notice that all their chicken is boneless. Unlike Downlow Chicken, you can comfortably dine in at Mogu. The key word is "comfortably". Miso soup was unlike any I've had anywhere else; it's not salty at all, very mild in fact. The Mogu Salad is their own unique blend of cabbage, kale, carrot, daikon, avocado, greens, carrot, apple and vinaigrette. The atmosphere was casual family friendly and outdoor seating was available. The staff was very courteous and upbeat. We ordered spicy fries, mogu salad and fried chicken. Ordered some take out today and was very happy with the food that we had! We got their jumbo fried chicken and the ebi katsu sandwich. The fried chicken was extremely flavourful without any of the sauce but they were very nice to provide us 4 different dipping sauces! Pieces were large and well fried, although a little bit soft from the ride home. The ebi katsu sandwich is their signature for a reason with a fried ebi patty and a delicious sauced bun, this was loved by my whole family! The fries were not anything special but THE SAUCE that it comes with is so good...its like tartar with mayo and egg bits. Finally, the people that own the restaurant/work there are very very nice and so sweet both in person and on the phone. I've been here twice now and I gotta say I love it. The first time I just ordered the regular chicken, the second time I ordered the regular chicken and the sea salt aonori fries. Both times I ordered takeout. The employees are very polite and friendly. It's just a small place maybe 6 tables? The fries were very good, it's about a 20 minute drive to my place and the fries were still very crispy when I got home, they are nicely salted and have bits of nori coating them. The chicken is awesome, I was craving them after the first time I was here. They are good sized boneless pieces that are crispy on the outside and nice and juicy on the inside. They also come with 2 dipping sauces, (3 for large I believe), there is original sweet chili, spicy gochujang sesame, and shio garlic lemon. I've tried them all and they're all good depending on what mood I'm in. When I first saw this place I thought it was Korean fried chicken, it wasn't until I went on their website that I found out it was Japanese. They also have some salads, katsu, rice bowls and other items as well as curry which I would love to try but the chicken it so good I think I'll keep ordering that....but you never know. No sauce was given even though I ordered the chili sauce. The chicken is good but different from what I remember from the food truck. No green onions on top and I sauce on the chicken. Calling in to order on a Friday night was actually difficult since they were so busy and we couldn't ordered online. Luckily my husband was persistent and made it through the phone call! We had fried chicken along with salad, fries, and udon noodles. The fried chicken lived up to the restaurant's name. I didn't realize how many pieces of chicken was part of the order. I didn't really want to post a review cuz I wanted to keep potential customers from running to order Mogu's absolutely awesome chicken! We started off with the Mogu salad $8.50. Cabbage, kale, carrot, avocado, greens, cucumber, tomato, carrot apple vinaigrette which tasted almost like miso! Very light & yum! We ordered their jumbo (about 15 pc) $27 Signature fried chicken. Boneless with an umami flavour & the batter had just the amount of crunch. Even tho I was full, I wanted to eat the entire thing but we still had about 5-6 pieces left over, packed it away for my sons who devoured it all! Service was also awesome! Food came out very fast, presentation was very appealing. The quiet spoken servers were quick, efficient & very friendly; made the experience even better. Hanging out on Commercial a few weeks ago, I was excited to see the Mogu logo on a storefront. I had enjoyed the sandwiches from their food truck on several occasions, and was glad that they had made the transition from truck to brick and mortar. I noticed they had a soft opening a few days ago and finally got to dine in tonight. I'm giving them a bit of slack because they're so new, and I'm looking forward to trying them again in a few months when they've worked out a few kinks, but here are my observations so far: Service is super friendly and the interior is cute, with graphics on the walls giving a shout out to their food truck days. The menu is smallish but still plenty to offer. Booze is very reasonably priced. There are tempting meal sets, which would be perfect if you're dining alone, but we decided to go à la carte. We started with the spicy tuna on crispy rice, the Japanese potato salad, a personal favourite, the rare roast beef, we of course had to try the fried chicken (original sweet chili flavour), and the Taiwanese style udon. The food was very slow to come out, although they seemed to be bringing out a lot of to-go and delivery orders. It's ok, the kitchen is still finding its stride. We finally got our spicy tuna on crispy rice and it was pretty good. The tuna had good flavour and the crispy rice that it sat on was nice, although maybe a bit too much rice. Next came the potato salad and it was... ok. Decent, but not the best I've had, and kind of pricey ($8.50 for a scoop) and it came with a pile of greens on the side, with no dressing which was a bit weird. Next came the roast beef and it was delicious, rare with a light soy based sauce, sauteed onions and chopped cilantro - the flavour was very similar to crying tiger beef that you find in some Thai restaurants. The next to arrive was the fried chicken and it looked great, although after our first bite we noticed it was barely warm. Fried chicken should be piping hot, but we chalked it up to the kitchen finding it's groove and we just ate it. It could have used a bit more sauce, but what was there was delicious. I was picturing the Thai sweet chili sauce, but this was less sweet and more tangy and it worked really well with the fried chicken. We got the "mini" which was 5 large pieces and definitely enough for us. We finally got the Taiwanese udon and honestly it was the star of the meal. Perfectly chewy udon topped with savoury ground beef, chunky chili oil and a perfect onsen egg. Delicious. I'll definitely be back to see if they work out their growing pains, but as it stands I've definitely had better (and hotter) fried chicken (like, across the street), and the other dishes were good but didn't wow me. Delicious food, but at a higher price. My family and I tried the ebi katsu sandwich with potato salad, fried chicken, and the braised beef short rib bowl. The sandwich was tasty. It had plenty of flavour and the pickle complimented the prawn cutlet patty. We cut it in half and I could actually see pieces of prawn in the patty. The potato salad that came with it was very small though. Again, the short rib bowl was also on the smaller side. However, the meat was very tender. It came with a poached egg, and when mixed all together with the kimchi, meat, and rice, it was very tasty. Not overly saucy and balanced with the acidity and spice of the kimchi. The chicken was really good. We chose the spicy gochujang sesame and the shio garlic lemon sauce. Overall, the chicken was crisp, very meaty, and tender. The pieces were a pretty good size and I love how it was boneless chicken. Both sauces were good, but honestly I could probably eat the chicken just on its own. Overall, I was happy and satisfied with the meal...my wallet..not so much. read more

Mogu is currently offering takeout by walk-in's only. But I lucked out with a superbly patient fellow who took my order over the phone. The only items available for takeout is fried chicken which is all we wanted to add to our meal. Given that it's their soft opening, kinks are to be expected. We had to wait 30mins past our stated pick up time. Luckily the weather was nice to be standing outside. On the other hand, we got to witness how incredibly gracious they are. Their credit/debit machine wasn't working that evening. I saw one customer really having to dig to the bottom of the coin purse only to come up $2 short. The customer promised they will return another day and Mogu's response (in the most gracious manner) "It's absolutely fine, no need!". And it doesn't stop there. When my order was ready, the server said the order has been comped due to our long wait. We gave them the price of our order as tips instead. So let's get to the taste of the chicken. I love the takeout style because the sauces are on the side. We asked for all 3 plus the mayo for our 9 pieces order. I have had my fair share of Japanese chicken karaage and this is the juiciest and plumpest I have had. My parents who would normally try to remove the deep fried skin didn't want to because it was that flavorful. Just fresh squeezed lemon was enough to add some acidity but I did enjoy a couple of their sauces. Try them all if you can!! I am so keen to try dine-in one day to try their other dishes. The restaurants around these area can be quite crowded during weekends or lunchtime or dinner, so this place is worth trying out rather than waiting for 1 hour for a table at other places. read more

Their chicken is extremely juicy and crispy! The price is just a tad bit more on average compared to other places but it is worth the cost because of the size and quality of the food! The only reason why I did not give it a full 5-star rating is because I expected a little bit more from their rice bowls, perhaps add some sort of seasoning or sauce with it on top of the seasonings that you choose for the chicken itself. Mogu Japanese Fried Chicken is a quaint little spot on Commercial Drive. It's a fairly small restaurant but we were seated right away. I ordered the mini size fried chicken with shio garlic lemon sauce and sea salt & aonori fries, while my husband got the katsu curry. The chicken was fried to perfection, a light crispiness on the outside, while still juicy and tender on the inside. The garlic lemon sauce was flavourful and had a strong taste of sesame oil. I also asked for the spicy gojujang sesame sauce, which they didn't charge me extra for. It was slightly spicy, sweet and a little bit tangy. The fries were nice and crisp, they had a buttery taste that went well along with the nori flavour. I tried a bit of the katsu curry, it had that iconic and familiar Japanese curry flavour, which I really like. The restaurant is small, so distancing is challenging but they had plexiglass between each table. The restaurant seemed very clean and bright, and the servers were super friendly and kind.
