I really like this bookstore because they have all kinds of different media and a great selection! The books are well organized and they have a nice selection of dvds and records as well. There is also a coffee shop and some seating inside, which I did not partake in on this visit but it's a nice added touch! I also sold some books/media here and the process felt a bit unorganized, but I got a decent amount of cash for my items. Be prepared that it will take a few hours, even if you get there right at 10am, but you can leave and come back or stay and shop around. Definitely have everything a new collector might want but may not have the deep cuts a long-time collector (like me) would be looking to purchase. Prices - a tad high. But I expected that considering I'm in a metropolitan area. Their rent is probably super high, but I don't mind paying an extra $2-3 per book to keep an independent store open. Regarding those deep cuts: - I did find some authors that I think are often overlooked, including Richard K. Morgan, Chuck Tingle, and Ann Leckie. - I was saddened to see that there was no Ronald Malfi in stock, which I find to be a mainstay in horror. - There was no Between the Buried and Me vinyl in stock, which saddens me due to concert tonight (that's why I drove all the way to this coast). This bookstore and coffee shop is near USF and draws a hipster looking student and professor crowd, which made me miss similar hangouts from my distant youth. Been to Bananas in St Pete and Sound Exchange around the corner, but Mojo is by far my favorite record store in the area. I was very surprised at the selection, as I've only ever been able to find more classic/mainstream stuff elsewhere, while Mojo had plenty of the alternative/emo/metal stuff I was looking for. This place has everything; a great category of oldies albums, a coffee shop, along with many books, art, and CDs. Everything was neat and nicely laid out, it definitely felt like somewhere I can relax and study at. I really appreciate the staff for being friendly and welcoming, especially the new worker that came in today and the lady accompanying him. I really wanted to love Mojo, and in many ways, I do--the store itself is beautifully curated with an impressive selection of records. It's the kind of place you want to spend time in and explore. Unfortunately, my experience with the staff left a lot to be desired. As someone who had never purchased a record here before, I had a few basic questions--like whether they could help me search for a specific album (I thought I wasn't looking in the correct spot) and where to ring up the record once I found it. (I mistakenly thought the barista counter was just for coffee and that the small counter to the side was where you rang up records) From the start, I felt like I was an inconvenience. At one point, I approached someone who was sitting by the records chatting and asked if they worked there. It turned out they didn't--they were just visiting a coworker who was on the clock. The vibe I got in that moment made me feel like I was interrupting some private hangout, even though I was just trying to get help in a store during business hours. (2pm) Eventually that employee passed off to someone who was willing to walk to the record display and show me, but even then, I felt like I was being spoken to like I should already know how everything works. I understand that people have off days, but the overall energy from the staff made me feel uncomfortable and unwelcome. No one wants to shop somewhere they feel like a burden for simply asking a question especially when that's part of the employees scope of work. It's a shame, because the store itself is fantastic--but the lack of warmth and professionalism from the employees was enough to make me think twice about coming back. Mojo has been a hidden gem in Tampa near the USF area for some years. I visit every so often to see what new or find a particular book or card decks. I recently visited since they've relocated next-door similar set up as before, but a little smaller. I am a J. R. R. Tolken fan so I decided to grab the hobbit within intentions to finish a book lol, wish me love . I love the movies and now reading the books. UPDATE: I love the new location where they moved to. It's more spacious and inviting. I purchased a children's book, a brownie and 3 drinks today, the cashier was a bit passive aggressive despite me spending almost $40 and driving all the way from Riverview but maybe she was hangry or something (being positive). I tried their lavender white mocha latte with whole milk today but it just wasn't what I thought it would be. The flavors didn't mix well and it tasted like a white mocha/vanilla-ey latte with 0 floral hints. When I asked for a bit of lavender the barista was kind enough to give me some but it still didn't mix well with the white mocha flavor. My partners peppermint mocha stole the show fo-sho (lol sorry). The brownie was yummy, I tend to like thick fudgey brownies so if you do too then get it - it's shareable too. read more

Hidden gem! If you love books (or just looking at a bunch of unique and interesting stuff) this place is like a treasure chest. They have a varied selection of new & used books, records, cds ( you can also sell to them and use credits for buying even more books:) You can browse their awesome selection while drinking a delicious coffee ( they have everything from unique lavender lattes to pour over) and they even have gluten free desserts! On Saturday, after having breakfast at home I wanted to have coffee and took an opportunity to visit Mojo Books & Records. When I entered the store, I was surprised to see lots of options for books and records. Books vary from different sections including thrillers, Bestseller, history etc. They also have a seating option where one can buy coffee and also read the book. This is one of the store where you may come for coffee but you will definitely fall in love with books and music too. I also took an opportunity and ordered Mexican Mocha Latte Hot coffee for me. The order was ready in few minutes and soon I got my coffee. The coffee was amazing along with freshly roasted coffee. The atmosphere was also positive and silence where people were focused on reading books and checking out the records. Amazing and definite store to visit. read more

I'm not from the area, but I always like to check out bookstores and record stores when I'm out of town. I came to Mojo expecting great things, and in fairness, I did like some of what I saw, specifically their vinyl section. I went through, and found what I thought was a hard to find (in person at least) copy of My Bloody Valentine's Loveless. It even has a "NEW import press" sticker on it, so that means it must be real, right? Wrong. It's a bootleg vinyl pressing from the early 2010s! It's my own fault for not being able to immediately spot that it was a fake, but the facts that the store doesn't state that it's a bootleg or that they charge the exact same pricing as the newer, official analog-cut vinyl repress from the past few years is just low. Plus, they ask for tips despite not helping you shop, while also being unable to say "would you like to leave a tip?" What an utterly strange place. read more

I stopped by here today in hopes I could browse the records, get a cup of coffee, try to work, get distracted, and go home. Without fail, this is manageable. Has the lavender dream latte which was very good, it didn't taste quite like what I'm used to in lavender lattes but I liked it. I'm not a huge coffee freak or anything but it was definitely like an interesting flavor profile or whatever. I also got an eggnog muffin which isn't something I would have thought to get but it looked really good. Unsurprisingly, delicious. The vibes were fantastic for work/study. Thought a couch would make it the ULTIMATE study spot. Just a generally calm and cozy vibe. Friendly baristas and other folks working at the record table. Highly recommend you stop by. read more

3 stars seems too low, but 4 seems too high imo. I recently moved back to Tampa and went back to Mojo to see the "new" shop or bigger location. Its been a decade or so ago since I had been there. The store is bigger now, but more music than books than I remember. I would call this a record store with some books, rather than a bookstore with some records. That's not the reason for my neutral rating, but I thought it was worth mentioning to any readers that see this review. The store seems a bit disorganized and the staff don't appear to have any clear direction on what they are supposed to be doing, or more maybe they have some apathy towards efficiency. I was there on a Saturday (today), which is presumably one of their busier days. There was 3 people working, one guy not available to the customers - sitting at a "register closed" counter, one staff member working behind the cafe counter, and one guy just walking around doing random tasks, like moving a book from one shelf to another. Essentially the guy working behind the cafe counter was the only one doing anything. It was a busy day, at a bigger location, and only one guy responsible for taking orders, making drinks, and ringing up customers. Needless to say, there was a long line of customers in the cafe line. The 3 man team felt no sense of urgency. The guy at the "register closed" desk locked his gaze onto his computer screen the way a child stares at an iPad to avoid interaction with adults. The guy behind the cafe counter was ringing up customers at a snails pace, as if there was no line at all, and the random tasks guy was doing just that - random tasks...such as moving a book from one shelf to another. Finally, cafe guy asked the random task guy for help ringing up customers, to which he replied "hmmm - I can make drinks". No fucking help at all. He didn't say, let me make a couple drinks and ring up some customers. He said, I'm gonna make some lattes now, good luck ringing up this line that keeps growing. When I finally got to the front of the line, the guy didn't say "sorry for the wait" or anything like that. He rang me up and kept winking at me. I don't know if he was trying to hit on me, has some form of tourettes, or if that's just his personality. It felt kind of awkward. He handed me a punch card, so that if I buy 9 more books I get a free book or something like that, the next I come. I don't the exact terms, I didn't really look at it. I already knew I wasn't going back anytime soon. ...So why 3 stars and not 2 or 1? Despite the poor service, they have a cool selection of records, books, and media. Personally, I am sucker for independent bookstores. I hate to say it, but I'd still go to Mojo over a Barnes-and-Noble. I think If I were just sitting at the cafe for a coffee and not actually shopping, my experience would have been a little more positive. read more

The ambiance of this place makes up for the prices, in my opinion. You pay for the experience to listen to music while you're selecting vinyls. The books here can also be marked down from their original price which is nice! They also have a cafe and some tables to go with your trip to the store:) While yes, you can go on Amazon and get vinyl for cheaper I think the quality of having a beautiful record store with some rare selections is pretty Awesome! read more

Everyone loves a good independent shop, right? A little something for bibliophiles, coffee shop goers, gift buyers or vinyl lovers. I seem to always order the Thai coffee, should prob branch out but the barista makes it so tasty. There is always the best selection of music playing overhead which is such a compliment to wandering and perusing the aisles of books. They have them broken down by genre, as you do. I've found some real gems in the nonfiction sections, things you wouldn't come across at your typical bookseller. Mojos is centrally located by USF in a lil strip plaza that doesn't always have enough parking so maybe avoid meal times if you're worried about getting a spot, otherwise just walk over from the mall parking lot. read more

My friend and I stumbled upon this place while looking for cafe drinks, we were so glad we found this place. There's so many interesting items for sale and they have tons of interesting books and records to browse through, which my friend and I did while waiting for our drinks. I got a butterbeer hot chocolate which had brown sugar, ginger, and cinnamon and was so delicious. And my friend had the iced matcha latte which she said was really good. They have plenty of non-dairy milk options. And everything is very affordable. The customer service was also great, the cashier took time to explain the different options and what was in the drinks. super cool place!! books are kind of oddly priced, some are more expensive, others are cheaper (pretty sure it has to do with how new and/or popular they are). this wasn't a big deal though, it's not like they were crazy expensive! they had a huge selection and i could've spent a long time in here! only thing is the place can get pretty crowded, and it's hard to move around the isles. but they had books, records, cd's, stickers, bookmarks, and coffee. would definitely recommend this place. read more
