We went to Mojo twice in one week. Once during the week and the second time on a Saturday. The restaurant is so spacious and beautifully designed and decorated. Service both times were great! Greeted with big smiles and genuine pleasure to have us there. Food was really good and the drinks were great. Our first time there it was happy out and they had specials which was a good taste of Cuban food. We should have shared the taste of Havana dish because it was so big for one person. But we took our leftovers home and had it for dinner the next night. Our Saturday visit was just as good. With mojitos to accentuate the experience! read more

This might be the only place in Tucson where you can get a decent Cuban-style sandwich. With a comfortable atmosphere and great service, Mojo serves up a variety of Miami-Inspired dishes. While you can't go wrong with the sandwiches and delicious shoestring fries, you can opt for heartier entrees with plenty of black beans and plantains. You absolutely *must* order the appetizers--the small bites are superb and come with a variety of delectable sauces. You should try out some of the small-batch stuff from the rum selection. There's even a brunch menu on weekend mornings! Took my friend in from out of town here for dessert , as we just had dinner elsewhere. She enjoyed the clean and open feeling of the restaurant. The gentleman greeting us at door was friendly and efficient. He seated us quickly and when leaving, made sure to say goodbye. Professional and just real- not fake or over done like many servers nowadays. I ordered the Mango tres leche cake and an espresso. She ordered the key lime pie. We were both thrilled with the choices we made. My mango tres leches - so delicious with the mango taste coming through mildly , just enough. Kaitlyn was a phenomenal server, per usual :) we Got the rum flight (guava, strawberry, watermelon, passionfruit ) and it was absolutely delicious! The guava is my favorite. Every time I come I do the mojo chicken. (This time I noticed a difference in the chicken taste, it was more tangy, not the usual taste and I got indigestion after, which is unusual- I hope this was a one time difference because i always get the mojo chicken, it's my favorite dish on the menu). We were visiting Tucson and looking for a good place to eat, and saw this Cuban place, and being Cuban-American myself, and seeing the great reviews, I was anxious to try this place, but was unfortunately a little disappointed. I'm not sure if they just had a bad night, but a few things were a little off that night. First, we started off with a pitcher of the Sangria since there were 3 of us and and the price for the pitcher was about the equivalent of about 4 drinks so we thought it would likely be worth it since pitcher prices are a better bargain. Not the case in this situation. The "pitcher" was more of a carafe, and the equivalent of about 3.5 drinks, but the cost of the "pitcher" is the equivalent of about 4 drinks, so we would have been better off getting just one glass at a time. The Sangria itself was fine, but nothing special. We then ordered the Havana Bites Sampler which has a few different things. The Yuca Frita was really good, as was the plantain chips, and the tostones, though I wish it was a little bigger, but overall this was good. However, we then all had the Taste of Havana, which has a Ropa Vieja, Mojo Chicken, Lechon Asado, black beans, platanos maduros, and rice. Like anyone who has grown up in a Cuban household, I've had and tried all these dishes countless times. Cuban black beans (Frijoles Negros) with white rice is a staple of any Cuban cuisine, and is done a very specific way, with a specific flavor. This did NOT have it at all. In fact, this was the most flavorless Frijoles Negros any one of us had ever had anywhere. It did not taste bad, it just had almost no taste, which is strange because the beans were cooked well, but I don't know if they forgot to add any salt or seasoning. My wife, who learned to cook these from my Cuban mother many years ago, agreed, it's as if they completely forgot to season this so it just tasted watery. The Lechon Asado was OK and cooked well, but though it was more flavorful than the beans, it just did not have enough Mojo (which is ironic for a place called "Mojo" Cuban Kitchen). The star of the dish was the chicken which was cooked well and the Plantanos Maduros which were good. The Ropa Vieja was OK as well, but nothing special. Service was OK too, though I felt the waiter seemed rush, and I understand it was busy, but he forgot what I ordered twice, and one of the times it was when I ordered croquetas of ham and cheese and he repeated the order incorrectly, and I corrected him which he acknowledged, and we still got the wrong one. I can't tell if this is the way it usually is, or they just had an off night, though since I don't live in the area, I don't think I'll be trying them again. Girlfriend dinner and it was my turn to pick the venue. I chose this place which was a 1st-time adventure for some restaurant-wise as well as Cuban food-wise. I think that Ryan was our server (whoever worked on 1/12 and served a booth of us 5 ladies). He was excellent - professional, knowledgeable, kind, accommodating. Other restaurants with a sub-par wait staff, take notes from this guy. I ordered the lechon asado...tender, flavorful, not too garlicky. A friend ordered their tres leches cake and it was divine. Gave my liver a break and ordered a mojito mocktail to wash things down. If I had to complain, the sugar cane in my drink was literally a garnish and not something that I could enjoy. It had zero flavor. But honestly, I have little faith in fruit in Arizona so.... We had such a great dinner and were able to chat in our booth. We were already planning future visits to have real mojitos and more desserts on the patio area. Good prices. It had so much flavor from the spices mixed into the meat plus the onions and frita sauce on top. I've never had a Cuban style burger before, and it delivered. Of course I had to get yucca fries on the side with the drinkable cilantro aioli. Prior to this visit I got the vaca frita which was also seasoned to perfection. Everything was amazing from the venue (not too fancy), to the service (inspired and friendly), and mostly the FOOD. I came looking for authentic Cuban, and found it in spades. First, the parking. Not great. Seems like this place is VERY busy most nights and there are a limited number of spots right around the facility. Else, you are shuttled off into this gravelly parking lot that's large, but full of huge potholes. It was raining the night we went, so not a great start. Very limited (if any ... I didn't see them) handicap spaces close to front door. Had a reservation (recommend), and was warmly greeted and shown to our table. Server came by quickly and took drink orders and gave us a rundown on some of the more popular appetizers. We sampled the El Presidente, the Coconut Mojito, the Hotel Nacional, and the Colado. Yeah, really good rum features in almost all the drinks. For starters, we went with our servers recommendation, The Plato Mixto, a delightful combo of 4 different items and a couple of delish sauces. Loved it. For entrees, one Taste of Havana, and one Vaca Frita. Lots of food, but it was so good, couldn't stop. The service was phenomenal we had a great waiter he was so funny and had our whole table laughing. The mocktails and drinks are overall delicious, a bit expensive for a mocktail around $9 but it was tasty. For food I got the mojo chicken sandwich which was really good actually, super flavorful, great shoestring fries and the cilantro aïoli was amazing. I thought I already wrote a review I have been here so many times. The Cubano is my favourite of all the sandwiches. The burger is also really good, but the Cubano rules!!!! I always get a side of mustard, meat juice, ketchup and hot sauce. I the fries because they are crispy. They changed the way you get drinks and the tea machine is gone. Sometimes I think I overwhelm my wait person, with all the sides. Their other food is pretty darn good as well. They have really clean restrooms and have it European style with gender neutral stalls and the sink outside the toilet closet. There's always parking and the tables are comfortable. Have had good Cuban pulled pork and black beans and rice in Miami and missed the food, so I had to try Mojo. Even my picky husband said the black beans and rice was good (i.e., authentic) and he tasted my pork while he made yummy noises over his roast 1/2 chicken. I'd call that a win. I'm so glad our meals came with fried plantains, too. The wait staff was attentive without hovering (Yay!) We got there early on a Saturday night, so I can't really comment on how the restaurant feels when it's full, but we were comfortable and the noise level wasn't too bad. I'm looking forward to trying the outside seating when the evenings warm up a bit. p.s. I opted for an original mojito rather than the skinny one, hoping the real mojito wasn't too sweet even though the menu offered less-sweet options. Ordered. Cuban a picadillo empanada to-go. Been meaning to try this spot for a while and happened to be passing through. For what I got I thought the prices were reasonable. $15 for a Cuban and $4 for one pretty good size empanada. I'm sorry I ate the empanada before if realized I didn't take a picture. Either way, I recommend it. The Cuban was well balanced but I prefer thinner, softer bread like I remember from my days in S. Florida. Bread was definitely different and heavier. I wanted to love this place so bad. I'm crazy for Cuban food and mojitos. The menu looked delicious and I had a very hard time choosing what to order. Since it was lunchtime, I limited myself to the ceviche and side of yuca fries. For a drink, I ordered the mojito flight. Service was great. The mojitos tasted like flavored soda water (depending on the flavor). I really dislike the flavor of soda water and I ended up asking for extra limes to try and make it more palatable. It barely helped. The ceviche also had a weird bitter taste to it. I tried just eating the shrimp out of it but it was difficult. The yuca fries and dipping sauce were bomb though. Recently visiting Tucson and Cuban Cuisine restaurants are so few and far between in the Southwest we'd try our hand at a new eatery for us. I will emphasize that if one is a true aficionado of 'legitimate and traditional' Cuban foods, one must realize the fact that there really is no 'real' or even 'close' to true Cuban cuisine to be found in Arizona, here is an approximation. Mojo Cuban Kitchen & Rum Bar's offerings of traditional dishes and old-style elements is gratifying - but the seasoning ingredients appear to be lacking! The restaurant has a bright post-modern Caribbean vibe, the large establishment caters to convenience and comfort with moderate and a low-key contemporary style, and the service is excellent, a great place for a date night drink and appetizers. My wife, Sister and I decided to go typically, so we started with a pitcher of the Traditional Mojito, properly made with the artifact of a real swizzle of sugarcane (which most places don't bother with such detail) and found it satisfyingly and properly made. We decided on trying their Yuca con Mojo (boiled cassava in garlic and oil marinade) as our starter appetizer. It was well prepared and Mojo was a garlic aioli, a neuville-style seasoning approach. Our main courses consisted of my Wife's order of Lechon Asado con Arroz y Frijoles negros (the epitome of Cuban dishes, its essence comes from the 'mojo' marinade which contains huge sums of garlic, cumin, and oregano with citrus juices), in this case, their rendition which offered a terrifically tender and juicy pork, it was totally lacking in any Criollo ingredients - my apologies, but it was tasteless! I had one of my all-time fave childhood dishes, Vaca Frita con Arroz y Frijoles negros (a uniquely Cuban beef dish traditionally prepared with (Flank steak shredded and fried til mildly crispy; fresh lime juice; olive oil; lots of fresh garlic; thinly sliced and sauteed white onion; bay leaves; oregano; cumin; salt and black pepper). Again, the traditional flavor of this shredded beef Cuban classic was wanting as was the black beans. For desert we ordered the Mango Tres Leches... two bites of it were both of us could have of it - 'nuff said. Although good in many aspects like the exceptional bar offerings, enjoyable and lively atmosphere and great service, this is most definitely not the place to enjoy a full and proper example of fine, legendary and extraordinary Cuban Cuisine. If you don't go for the food, go for the drinks and ambience. read more

I went to Mojo Cuban Kitchen and Rum today to meet and catch up with some friends. The place has such a nice feel and inviting atmosphere. It's open, airy, and beautifully decorated with a modern yet classic touch. Our waiter was knowledgeable about the menu, had a great personality, and was very attentive throughout our meal. I ordered the lechon with black beans, maduros (fried sweet plantains), and yucca! And the yucca was definitely the star of the show. This place was so amazing that it inspired me to write my very first Yelp review! My girlfriend and I visited Mojo, and we had an incredible experience. From the moment we walked in, the ambiance was perfect--cool, clean, and bright with a light, airy feel. The staff was incredibly friendly, greeting us with warm smiles as we entered. I ordered the Pan con Bistec and the Plato Mixto to share because I really wanted to try the Croquetas, but I also love myself a good Empanada! Quick update to foot-stomp the consist 5-star dish, the 'Taste of Havana' (TOH) plate! Absolutely love this dish for two and the service is fantastic. Consistently feel welcomed, and the service at the bar from Nora and others is always 5-star. Really enjoy sitting outside the bar looking in, conversation with the staff and of course the TOH!. Another cool thing about this place is I believe the staff really enjoys working here - few places can say that, and I hear it each time I visit.
