I enjoy strolling through the MoMA Design Store. I can see items inspired by some of my favorite artist. There is a main and downstairs area. The main floor usually has the smaller art items such as key chains and things. Downstairs has more furniture and items for the house. A nice adventure. Parking is difficult on the streets. Super fun and unique store! We spent about an hour here browsing and deciding on what cool souvenirs we were gonna buy. I bought two Jellycat plushies - one chili and one pickle ($30 each) and a few stickers. Total spent: $76 The shelves were very organized and fully stocked. They had several employees standing around and keeping it all clean. The cashier that rung me up downstairs was very friendly and cheerful. We had a fun time! read more

I visited MoMA Design Store located on 81 Spring St. in Manhattan, NY just to browse, but I couldn't resist to purchase a few items. The MoMA Design Store is two levels of modern-design objects, gifts, housewares, and art books. You can definitely spend a few hours at this store. The store is organized and fully stocked. On Black Friday, MoMA Design Store offered $20 off orders $100+, $40 off $200+, and $60 off $300+. The cashier was also very friendly and offered suggestions. I love how they have Jellycat items and incorporate Miffy with famous artists and their art pieces. The MoMA Design Store is definitely worth checking out if you are in the area. read more

The MoMA Design Store carries a selection for the office, the home, has books, accessories, featured prints and items from artists, seasonal items, and collectibles from current exhibits. We stopped by to peruse while in the area, and it's one of those places that just feel too chaotic - it's always busy in here and jampacked with people. The selection of items are kind of in a disarray and unorganized, and you really can't check out things in peace. I guess it's one of those stores where you can purchase random gifts, but, honestly, I feel that they'd soon become seasoned or outdated after a while and wouldn't have that longevity you'd expect from purchasing with the price tags seen here. Super unfriendly staff! I usually shop here for gifts but today I had a horrible customer service experience! I already knew what I wanted before walking in so I walked to the wall where the item was placed last week. I noticed it was sectioned off and all the items were pulled on a trolley. The items were not pulled behind the sectioned off area so anyone would assume that these items are still available. I picked up the espresso maker box and opened it to see what it looked like again just to be sure since there's no display. A black male associate came over and told me "those items are not for sale" and tries to close the box. I stepped back and said "I saw these last week and I wanted to purchase it. Could I look at them?". He just made an annoyed face and walked away without saying anything. Then I was so off put by this that I decided to just purchase this because I've looked at it already. So I go to the register to ask the white younger cashier woman if I could get a gift receipt and check to see if any of the glassware are chipped. She tells me sure and opens the box and says she's sure they're fine since it's packaged nicely. So I asked her if we could just double check since I saw some reviews on the moma website saying their product was chipped. But she just gives me a blank stare so I offered to check the product and she doesn't say anything while just watches me check it, instead of checking it with me. I paid and then she gives me the bag and slides it to me and says "have a nice day" but she forgot to give me the receipt since it seems she just wanted to get rid of me. I remind her and she hands me a receipt that has pink stripes on the side which means the receipt paper roll is running out. Then I look at it and remind her again, I need a gift receipt. Then she gives me the gift receipt with the pink stripes too. This isn't presentable as a gift receipt but I was so upset with that experience that I just walked out and I'm so unhappy with how they treated me that I might just return it. This place is part of my walking tour for relatives. I always love coming here. This store offers a lot of different items. Some of the items are really interesting and unique but are somewhat ridiculously over priced in my opinion. I have gone into this store and bought a key chain and some other small random items which is in my budget :-) and my 11 year old nephew makes me laugh every time we come here. He picks out some random toy like a Yoshimoto cube and asks me if I would buy it for him. We both look at each other and giggle because he knows he's not getting it. This place does offer unique items that can make great gifts if price is not an object. This is definitely a great store to stop into and check out because they do have some items that I have not seen in any other store which I think is really nice. read more

The products are wonderful here and I come very often to get gifts for friends. However, today I had a terrible experience with customer service where the man in the round table was extremely disrespectful and uninterested on helping me. To give more light to the scenario: i purchased two of the same products and asked to get gift wrapped separately (which is $5 each) and the man obviously did not want to do that. When he completed the gift wrapping he gave us one bag for two of the same gift which were for 2 different people. We asked for another bag and he sighed and angrily threw a bag at us. He then turned around and continued doing something else. I honestly have never experienced something like this and was pretty shocked to see such low standard for customer service at such an highly upheld establishment. read more

Two floors full of all the beautiful, useless, knick knacks you didn't know you needed. There are clocks, train sets, water bottles, leather goods, ceramics, and everything else you could dream of. All the fun knick knacks and accessories in the a regular MoMA store - or a lot of cool museum stores in general - are packed in this one, very busy location. The store is set-up nicely to handle the crowds, but it will inevitably be crowded since people want to touch and try all the fun things. It's like a mini museum in and of itself. Most of the items here are on the pricier side of life, though I suppose in theory you're paying for a supremely designed product if you're getting it at a store like this. Some of the most fun things to look at are kitchenware and accessories, some shawls/clothing in the back, and neat clocks to the back and right side of the store. If you're looking for a tasteful, unique gift and can spend a little bit of dough, this store definitely has a neat selection. read more

Their buyers have been doing a great job and in the last 2 years or so, it's gotten much better with curating low and mid end priced and obscure items. - I think it's hard not to find a gift for any person unless they HATE design/functionality. - You can find obscure stuff from e.g. Japan that you'd have no idea existed otherwise unless you lived in Japan. I wanted some Paola Navone stuff from Merci in Paris and was happy to find it here. - Exclusive Baggu bag. - Miffy! Bao Bao Issey Miyake! - They carry some items from Muji and Uniqlo. If it's sold out there, or past season, they might have it here. - They have been doing an exclusive collection with HAY. I shop online most of the time on the monthly corporate discount day, but around Thanksgiving/Christmas shopping season, the deals are the best. Every item is eligible for member pricing. If it's worth it, sign up for membership, if your company isn't a member. My friend wanted a clock. They were sold out in the store. I checked online later and it was 30% off. Surprised the staff didn't check for them. Online customer service: once an order was shipped to the billing instead of the shipping address. CS was no help and we had to drive to the billing address. Of all the times I've shopped here, that was the only time I had an issue. read more

I'm a big MoMa store customer. I buy furnitures, gifts and home decorations from here online or the other store in the city. Today I had a bad experience here. Honestly, the guy at the door checking temperature is so unfriendly and impatient that you would just lose interest in buying things in the store. He stares at you when you walk in and yells at you if you didn't see the exit sign promptly. Come on dude, really? I'm not your enemy and I didn't commit a crime ok? He turns around laughing and joking with his colleague. Funny thing is he doesn't do that to everyone seemingly. Me and friend came in here while waiting for our table at a local restaurant. They have nice stuff. But the security guard was watching us while we were looking at some books. I felt it was racial motivated. Another shopping while black incident. This security greeted to white customers as they entered but said nothing to us when we entered. TOP FLOOR: I just can't seem to find space or place for these largely useless, lightly styled items. IDK, but nothing here feels very special or interesting, certainly not enough to take home. It's kind of just like average house/lifestyles wares with a LITE postmodern twist....but also for like $200 lol. If you're gonna go modern, GO MODERN. Make something intriguing. Make something that speaks for itself. This stuff feels like IKEA meets MOMA. The security guard is very nice though! BOTTOM FLOOR: The bottom floor is certainly far more interesting than the top floor. They do have prints and New Yorker magazine covers, which are nice in terms of home decor. Here, you can also find more household items, and some furnishings...again, with the same postmodern LITE twist. Eh. Nothing had enough flair, or enough appeal in general to be worth buying IMO, on the three occasions I've come here. I'll pass. read more

Any business that aims to recover upfront research or design costs through seemingly irrational pricing, be it pharmaceuticals or high-end furniture, needs to be approached with caution. Case in point--the MoMA Design Store, that is stocked with items that are, for the most part, gimmicky or expensive, and in all cases poor value for money. It is hard to accept so much space in prime Soho being put to such mediocre use. A Mondaine wall clock for $395--I could fly to Switzerland and steal one from a railway station in the Bernese Oberland and be back for a few dollars more. Well, maybe not quite. Or molded plastic chairs for over $400? Uniformly dull-looking MUJI furniture such as file cabinets for over $250? Many of the ridiculously priced items are marked down 10% under the banner of a holiday sale. The store does excel in affordable even if over-priced tchotchkes, which likely explains its favorable portfolio of reviews, and warrants a three-star rating. Colorful salt and pepper shakers, fruit bowls, home accessories, toys, flashcards, or infant smocks, all quite attractive and fairly unique. You can join the MoMA to save 10% at the store, or get a free entry ticket to the MoMA by spending $85 at the store or, better still, episodically shop for cheap and captivating gifts that will doubtless bring fleeting delight to a gullible cherub or a forgiving friend. OMG, I had the best time exploring this store which is located directly across the street from Balthazar. I ended up buying a lot of Haring and Warhol goodies here along with a couple of unique coffee table books. Have purchased a few gifts for friends in the City when in town - and haven't gone wrong yet. And I love looking at the jewelry and watches here. MoMA merchandise is just sooo cool. Every time I'm in NYC, I have to check out one of the MoMA stores and I always end up with a few gifts. This store gets really crowded, so maneuvering can be tricky, especially since there is so much to gawk. Anyway, the items are usually unique, usual, cool, a collaboration with an artist or architect, or a combination of all these things. During my visit earlier this year, I picked up a really cool paper weight that was designed by Tibor Kalman. It's a silk-screened vinyl imprinted paperweight that looks like a blueprint and was hand-crumpled and wrapped around a steel weight. Very cool gift for engineers and architects! I'm also obsessed with MoMA's collection of perpetual calendars (I have four different ones, lol). These are awesome to have on your desk! It's paperless and foreverrrrrr! My favorite one so far is the round magnetic version designed by Gideon Dagan (1998). It's sleek and easy to use (the blocks are cute and everything, but I constantly knocked them over). I could go on and on. Basically, I'm very satisfied with everything I've purchased and I'll continue to visit on future trips! read more

Huge fan of their inventory - really perfect for gifts! I come here often for Secret Santa and birthdays! The one downside is that their stuff is pretty pricey. They have gadgets and chic finds that are really perfect for everyone. They also have an extensive collection of books downstairs and art-inspired office supplies. On the first floor, they have an assortment of cooking, tech, paper goods on tables and a section dedicated to Muji in the back. The best perk is that they usually pre-wrap some of their goodies, so you can pick up a pre-wrapped gift! Pro Tip: You get 20% off if you have a MoMa card. I've come into this store a million times and have managed to NEVER buy anything. How is that? Self.Mutherfather.Control. This store is great. It's like a museum in of itself, with fun products that you might not want to spend the money for, but would be nice enough to spend for others. They have a great selection of items from artists that have actually been featured at the museum (past and present) and it's amazing how many items, every day items, are so thoughtfully designed. Because the theme is "modern", you won't find that many organic things here. I'm a fan of both and can appreciate a good clean design. The kitchen accessories are probably my favorite just because. This is a great place for gifts that you wouldn't normally find anywhere else.
