Brought a friend here for lunch on our way to the airport. We sat in the outside patio, which was very nice. So me and a friend stopped by here to get a drink. I made reservations for 7pm. When I arrived I gave the server my name and he allowed me to sit at the bar. We were served by Fabio and he was good. We ordered a pitcher of strawberry sangria which wasn't bad. My friend ordered the mussels and I tried the sauce but wasn't a fan. They also gave us bread and some kind of tomato and oil sauce and while the bread was rock hard the sauce was tasty. The bill came to about $63. We had a good experience and will return. read more

The restaurant has a bar feel but they certainly are serious about the food which is very tasty if not the most refined. I look at tapas as social casual and fun. So, I found Mompou and decided to try. -Service: the restaurant wasn't packed, but there was a good crowd with at least 4-5 tables occupied. Staff was attentive and prompt. They have are clearly practicing safety re Covid and I felt great about that. -Drinks: wine and cocktail menu, options are vast. I had great drinks! -Food: The food was great, I has the seafood plate. My only criticism is that the food did not come out hot. That's a TRUE turn off. I'd recommend this place for happy hour, I think they do drinks and small plates well. My friend ordered the chicken wings, I tried one, and they were good. Visited on a Friday night where rain was Forthcoming. Fortunate for us, it didn't rain in Newark. Made a reservation and was there seated in less than 30 minutes. I've lived in the Ironbound area for a few years and have always walked passed this restaurant and wondered what the food was like. So, it's about time I actually tried. I impulsively mad a reservation on a Saturday night and, honestly, it probably wasn't even necessary because it was pretty quiet for a late Saturday night. I was seated immediately and ordered the lamp chop tapas and the squid ink paella. Both dishes were phenomenal and cooked very well. I was a bit hesitant to try the Paella because it did not look appetizing, but I'm so glad my eyes were wrong. One of the most interesting and appetizing paella dishes I've ever had. Overall the food was 10/10 but the dining experience was just okay. Service was extremely slow, which confused me since it wasn't a packed house. My waiter disappeared after I took my order and just never checked in-- had to flag someone else down for the check which is why I knocked off. On the evening I visited this restaurant, there were several empty tables inside. However, the host decided to sit my friends and I right next to the door. We visited the restaurant on a cold day, and it was very uncomfortable being placed next to a frequently used exit. When I had asked to be placed somewhere towards the back to avoid the draft I was told, "these tables are taken!" I did not see anyone at the vacant tables for the full hour that I remained in the restaurant. There was one difference I recognized between my friends and I and the customers in the restaurant... skin color. I can't even blame the staff, maybe it could be an unspoken rule to sit "certain customers" near the door (who knows)! The food was mediocre at best, but drinks were great. read more

I have made an almost two hour drive multiple times for the sole reason of dining here. The staff welcomes you like family. They are kind and attentive. I've tried many things on the menu but I'll highlight a few of my faves. Starting with my favorite drink-The Cucumberbatch For a few tapas, the bacon wrapped dates stuffed with blue cheese are to die for! The calamari is tender yet crisp and pairs so perfectly with a mango sauce that has a slight kick of spice. The garlic sautéed shrimp is one of the many reasons I keep coming back. Next, grilled artichokes cooked to absolute perfection. Then onto the grilled sea bass that I assure you shined perfectly on its own and was only complimented by a perfect medley of veggies. The chorizo felt overcooked and the wine it was in totally dominated the flavor of the meat itself. The avocado crab salad was definitely the high point, but a little overly wet and maybe ever so slightly too sweet. Still quite good. This restaurant is great and we very much enjoyed our experience. My mom, my girlfriend, and I stopped here for tapas while passing through Newark, and I'm glad we did. The service was good, the tapas were really good, and we thought the aesthetic was pretty cool for the three of us. Review of the food: The bread that our server brought out to the table was fantastic! We were thrilled by the dipping sauce, which was delicious. We ordered a small pitcher of red Sangria for the table and managed to get about 5 glasses out of it (which I was impressed by). I very much enjoyed the red Sangria, as it was sweet and was not too powerful (I didn't feel hit by alcohol after my 2 glasses, which was good for me; however my girlfriend said she wished the Sangria had a bit more strength, so I guess that depends on preference). For tapas, we ordered (1) the empanada trio, (2) the paella negra, and (3) the pulpo a la Féria. We all loved the empanadas and they were my lady's favorite. We thought the spinach empanadas were amazing, and the cheese empanada was out of this world. My mom's favorite was the paella negra. It was light, and a lot of paella came on the plate. In my opinion the vegetables definitely stood out, and I particularly enjoyed the sections where there was a dollop of cream. One thing to think about here is that the squid ink in the dish can give your lips an ink-black coloration, so be mindful of that if you're out on date night. The pulpo a la Féria was my favorite, as the octopus and potato pieces paired well together. The more you ate, the more you got to bits that were dressed in more amounts of extra virgin olive oil. In my opinion this dish tasted better the more you ate it. I loved it. Terrible. Our food was clearly left out for a long time before they finally remembered to bring it out to us. It was barely warm, almost cold, and we ate it because we were hungry and specifically came here to eat before a show. Our sangria also was forgotten, as I watched the waiter realize we were without drinks for a while and he ran back to get the pitcher. During our meal, my boyfriend had to run to the bathroom; likely because of the food which was probably riddled with bacteria after being out for too long. The drinks are amazing and well crafted , it is fresh ingredients and I enjoyed myself . The food wasn't the highlight but get the job done, I did expect more. The Pinchos De Pollo was a bit disappointing but that's due to the sauce that's on top. I removed the sauce option for the Medallones De Carne. Would frequent again for drinks. This is a disaster once again. Fruit flies or garbage flies everywhere? Over my drink over my food! I had to switch spots and the waiter didn't even bother asking why did I switch spots. When I switched places flies were there too. I couldn't eat my food because they were resting on it. I made it very apparent and visual that I am trying to get rid of them every time they come close, no assistance from the staff and no apology. As far as the food: the baked potato is with mayonnaise inside of it and next to it... like what? I didn't taste a potato just the Mayo. Baked churizzo nothing special, something almost too average. Bread on the side next to a plate with cabbage shreds very weird and bread was old even though they warmed it up. Like you guys!!! Throw that bread away you are in a Portuguese neighborhood that has amazing bread everywhere but not here. OMG! Never again. And I live in the neighborhood! Mompou is the worst tapas place in Ironbound. Such a bad representation. Try Casa d'Paco or Vivo. read more

The calamari, croquetas & papas where my favorite!!! I was not impressed with the pinchos de pollo or the guacamole salad. They were bleh! I sauce they lay the croquetas & papas was yummy! I recommend that you ask for a bit of sauce on the side if you are an avid dipper like me. The sangria was really good. Wish I had more. 5/5 stars, without a doubt. You have to give this place a try! It's in a neat area of Newark on Ferry Street with other shops and restaurants. The atmosphere is chill and the decor is awesome. Looks like a great bar as well. We opted to sit at a table and split a few tapas on the menu: the traditional paella, the eggplant, steak medallions, and the stuffed peppers. (I apologize for not remembering the proper names of these.) The peppers were hands-down my favorite. I expected hot and spicy, but they were chilled and sweet. They came as a recommendation from our waiter (btw the service is wonderful) and I am so glad we tried them. The eggplant also came recommended, and honestly that was my least favorite of our sampling, but it was still good. Both the paella and steak medallions were delicious. We ended dinner with a tres leches and flan to split. Both were equally amazing. Bottom line: you've got to give this place a try. If you're a local, I guarantee you'll go back often. I'm so glad for any restaurant that is still able to operate during Covid. I visited Mompou pre Covid, after work. I saw their bartender participate In a cocktail contest at the library's cafe, was impressed so definitely went for the drinks. I can only remember having a salad with beets and fresh fruits, it was really fresh and yummy, but they were sold out of the grilled hanger steak that evening so I vowed to re visit. Welp finally did yesterday. It was a really nice afternoon and wanted to grab some lunch on someone's deck. They had a sign that said their back patio was open, whoo hoo! Or not whoo hoo, when I spoke to the hostess he said I couldn't dine out there, just inside. I stayed because it was very quiet and there weren't any other customers. Service still top notch. Don't ya love when you are the only one in an eatery, yet the staff still operates like you're a party of ten. It's such a good feeling. I ordered a cocktail to sip while looking over the menu. I was pretty interested in the Gin cocktails since their #snapplefact about gin on the menu a was pretty intriguing, but I went with the Fresh Ginger Smash. (I missed my Covid protection ginger shot that morning lol) Rolls were brought out and I was a little sad they were not warm, but the home made tomato dip served with them made up for it! So herby and delicious. My favorite of the tapas was the garlic shrimp. They reminded me of my own. A dozen shrimp perfectly cooked in an authentic sauce, blissful. The hanger steak! omg the hanger steak topped with Gorgonzola cheese had unimaginable flavor! So much potential to be a star studded tapas, but I asked for it to be prepared to medium and it was nearly well done. It also was not tender. The curry crab cakes were my least favorite. So dry and bland, I wanted to ask them to take it back, but It was edible and I hate food waste. I enjoyed the Gin Verde cocktail with my food. The drinks were great, but I will admit mostly iced. For that I think the prices should be 8 to 9 bucks, definitely not more than 10. Tres leches for dessert was so pretty and did not disappoint. The fresh strawberry's and espresso cookie rolls went so well with it. A couple came in during the middle of my meal and ordered quite a few things. Their mussels, papa bravas, and salad looked so good. And they mentioned their sangria being some of the best they've had. 100 for two drinks, three tapas, and dessert (with tip). It was a table of 3 adults 1 child, on 1 small table. It's 5pm, the inside is completely empty, there was only 3 tables taken outside. The idiotic manager comes and says exact words" no I can't do that, we will make this work. I kindly ask him, we are very tight in this table our food is here already, we just need some space, he goes on to say, no I can't. I will lose money if I give you another table"! IT WAS LITERALLY 5PM, NO ONE IS WALKING IN! CUSTOMER SERVICE! IF I AM COMFORTABLE I WILL ORDER MORE FOOD, DESSERT AND MY BILL WILL BE WORTH IT AT THE END! BUT THAT WAS NOT THE CASE!
