Mom's is a great local breakfast/brunch/lunch spot with top-notch home cooking and caring, expert service. It's small, cozy, and very friendly. Don't go there expecting ambiance; they don't put on airs with fancy place settings. Instead, go for an honest, delicious breakfast served with a smile and prices so low you will be whispering about them in wonderment. We've eaten at Mom's several times; we always have the same waitress, and we hope she never leaves. She is friendly, kind, and knowledgeable, and will absolutely get your order right every single time. For example, I order my hash browns "extra crispy" and here they really are. You might think that this would be an easy thing, but apparently it requires a miracle at any restaurant other than Mom's, since Mom's is the only place that can get them crispy. Eggs "over easy" are likewise perfect here. And if you like rye toast, you will be pleasantly surprised at how tasty their locally baked rye is. Great little place to stop in for breakfast. The food is always tasty. We love the meat mess I think it's called. A bunch of meat thrown into scrambled eggs and topped with sausage gravy. And some hash browns on the side So yummy. The prices are fantastic well below most places. Most of the time the service is great but sometimes you get a cook back there that's off their game and slow to put up plates of food together. DO NOT... judge this book by its cover. I saw some previous reviews that absolutely trashed the place for all of the wrong reasons. Tucked inside of a gray home is a hidden gem for all comers to La Porte. Sure the parking lot is bumpy, but you're not going there for the parking. The paint may be faded, the carpet may look rough, but I assure you... you're not going there to judge carpet or paint. If that's your plan, save them the trouble of dealing with your petty ass and go elsewhere. What's inside is a quaint setting with some fantastic antique decorations, delicious breakfast options and AMAZING service. I stopped through town on my travels back east from the midwest. Mom's seemed like my kind of place. I want to find the local greasy spoon where the portions are generous, the flavors comforting and the locals look at me like "Who the heck are you?" when I walk through the door. Mom's checked all the boxes I had a pancake with just a hint of vanilla that was delightful. I also had the sausage, hash browns, mushroom and swiss omelette. My wife had the chili and cheese omelette. All plates came out piping hot and the meals were fantastic, just as I'd hoped. My coffee was topped off early and often by the young lady working the room and the overall service was perfect. This is a big plus in my book. Prices were beyond fair for the portion size. The kitchen is small. Our food came out timely. It wasn't super speedy, but it wasn't what I would consider slow. The overall experience was really laid back and I'm perfectly fine with that. When I'm driving across the country, the last thing I want is to feel rushed. That kind of trip is a marathon (not a sprint) so I want as little stress as possible. Quick tip... we got there just before 8am on a Monday. By 8, they were filling up. I'd say it would be best to get there early and beat the crowd. Thanks to the crew at Mom's for a great breakfast. Was NOT home cooking! Everything is frozen or at least that is the way it appears and tastes like. Definitely an issue between the kitchen and front of house. Had to ask for pickles and onions when I ordered everything on my sandwich. I asked for crispy fries and they still came out limp! Waitress was pleasant but wasn't very attentive to our table. The manager was more concerned about counting her tips then taking care of the customers. It was very smokey in the restaurant from lack of exhaust in the kitchen and they really need to invest in some sort of fly control. They received 2 stars instead of one because the prices were decent! Will not go back and would not recommend! Maybe if you are a local you get what you order and maybe they serve you better? read more

This place was interesting to say the least! Just by driving past this place, you would never think that this little gray shack was a restaurant. I pass it by every time I go to La Porte and I have never noticed it before. There is a small sign out front, but still difficult to see. The insides are about as run down as the outside. Although the place did look old, it was kept very clean and neat There is not much about this place in the way of style or decor. Although it was simple, the place is a as well kept as it can be. The overall effect worked though. The menu was small and simple and had your basic breakfast items on it. I ordered what they call a Mom's mess. It is scrambled eggs, an assortment of veggies, and ham all covered with sausage gravy. It tasted very good, but it seemed to be missing something. I could not quite put my finger on it. Our server was super friendly, I am going to make the assumption that she was one of the owners, This place is a great value for your your breakfast buck. I will be back again! read more

Mom's is a dive style mom and pop diner. As Dave S described, it's a nondescript grey house that is now a diner. Tiny sign and a gravel parking lot. The staff, I believe her name was Lori, was helpful, nice, and provided quick service. I don't have anything bad to say about Mom's. The food wasn't bad, it just wasn't very good. I'm a guy that enjoys bland food every now and again, but the french toast and hashed browns just didn't have much flavor. Breakfast options in La Porte are limited and I only ate the more bland options of the menu. I recommend trying it at least once. My dad and uncles eat here every saturday and the restaurant was 3/4 most of the morning. Mom's is also a good alternative to chain breakfast places if you are looking for similar food for a lot less money. read more

We have been to Pine Lake in LaPorte, IN a few times and this was the first we made it to Mom's Home Cafe. Its a very tiny house style diner. Limited seating, small kitchen....BUT.... WOW can they make some good food!! Our waitress Bree had just been there a few months but she was so pleasant and awesome. I have the Mom's Meat Plate and Biscuits & Gravy. The sausage gravy was phenomenal!! Great food with a tiny diner atmosphere. It gets very busy on the weekends so there may be a wait but that is one wait well worth it!! What a cute little place! We stopped in while traveling through. Staff is friendly and make you feel like you are at grandmas house! Great breakfast, average everyday items. As if my silverware vibrating off the table as the waitstaff goes thundering by wasn't enough. The suggestion that the lady with the perfectly mannered service dog might leave by some ancient employee was just too much. Then creme it off by being inappropriately addressed as "Honey" "Sweetie" "Babe" etc. I get the whole old fashion greasy spoon concept but seriously folks. Dress your waitstaff nicely, not as garbage collectors. Fix your aging bouncy floor or reduce the load pounding on it. By all means find a cook that understands presentation. And by the way, don't bring me chocolate milk when I've ordered hot chocolate. If you don't want to offer it seasonally then take it off the menu, don't use the bait and switch tactic. This has been a weekly stop for me for a while, now I think Ill pass from now on. At least I wont spend as much on pepto bismol. read more

What a nice surprise! Found on yelp wanted to check out. Arrived within 35 minutes of closing. Greeted happily and wonderful hot coffee and menus promptly delivered. Older tiny cabin like setting close to lake. Food delivered steaming literally! Hubby had a hot mess that he really enjoyed. I had a corn beef omelet with pepper jack and wonderful American fries very fresh. Could use a little updating hence loss of a star. Wonderful staff tiny tiny kitchen so you may have a wait /we were out within 1/2 hour we'll be back! read more
