This place heavily advertises the difference between regular ice cream and gelato, but I just couldn't find anything that tasted as good as advertised. The cherry flavor trumpeted by the customer before me seemed trite and uninteresting when I sampled it, and instead going for blackberry and mint chip left me with an okay berry flavor but an icy texture lacking the smoothness of gelato. The mint chip was a bit smoother, but had a very artificial flavor with an iffy aftertaste. And put together, the two scoops cost what I would have paid for really top gelato. Maybe I'm missing something and there are other things here that are better, but it was really quite disappointing. I've had great gelato in primo locations, and I've had great gelato in rural Virginia (Staunton, specifically), but not here. read more

I ordered the white bean burger, which came with any drink from the fridge, as well as the strawberry and mint gelato on a sugar cone. The burger was wide and looked good but the patty wasn't up to par. The patty was more grainy than beany and because it was so grainy, the texture and taste suffered. It reminds me of a famous frozen veggie burger but I don't remember the brand. Their choice of topping flavor for the burger was also lacking; it was a cole slaw theme. My friend loved it though. I also sampled majority of the gelato flavors and the only flavor that stood out to me the most was the grapefruit. I've eaten here several times and the food is always good. Some of it is even great. The Cuban and banh mi stand out. Soups vary from good to great as well. The German farmhouse was really good. Soups change pretty often, so you can always find something to try. Service has been fine and friendly. So why only two stars you ask? They are posting on Facebook for buy one meal deal and get the second half off. The stared purpose is to build their evening meal business. My wife does not get a chance to go here for lunch, so I thought I could let her try it with me. They also have been running a gelatto buy one get one for several months. We ordered two meal deals and two gelatto and got charged full price. When asked, we were told since we didn't say we wanted the special pricing when we ordered, the special did not apply. I've never heard anything like that in my life. Nothing on their Facebook post indicates you must ask for anything. After much complaining, they gave us money back for one gelatto but we're still out $6 for the entree. I know the owner was not there. Maybe there was miscommunication between him and the evening workers. I really don't want this to be the last time I go there. read more

We took our kids here during COVID shut down because it was the only small business ice cream place open. Wanting to support local business we decided to give it another try. We had been here in the past and the server wasn't wearing gloves, didn't wash his hands and they were filthy and touched our ice cream with his hands. This time it was more of the same. He wore gloves when taking my card, but not while handling our food. He saw me waiting with my four kids but took other customers before us and brought out only one ice cream and then the other tens minutes later. So one kid had ice cream while they others had to wait. Another man working there wasn't helping but talked to another customer the whole time we were there. It was very frustrating. The food was very expensive as well. We paid $14 for a Cuban sandwich. That's more than what I'd pay at a full service restaurant. We won't be going back. read more

On our first trip here, Wifey and I rolled up on the bike about 5 minutes AFTER closing time in the summer. The owner didn't bat an eye, scooped us some amazing gelato and coffee, told us about how much he loves it here, bragged about his wife's impressive culinary training and experiences, and how they are committed to making "the healthiest food in the Tri Cities" by using non-gmo food, eventually milling their own grains and flours, the whole anti-frankenfood hippie deal. Which is fine, as long as it tastes good. And it does. The only knock I have is that I called last week to ask about the specials and any low-carb options that day and was advised to try the bean soup or chili or something with loads of beans. That means super high-carbs. Hell I know that there are so many fad diets going on right now that you can't keep up with all of them, but just tell me you don't know or something. It's not really even a complaint, but we did opt for another lunch place that day. Mona Lisa's lunch specials are always interesting and tempting. It's a little bistroteque owned and operated by passionate foodies that believe in what they are doing. If I were a betting man, I'd say this place is going to make it and make it big here.
