Let me just start off by saying, not only is Emily Thomas the sweetest person you will ever talk to, but she is also a HAIR MAGICIAN. I know this is cliche but if I could give her 10 stars out of 5 l would. Emily has taken me through 3 hair transformations and she has nailed every single one... haircut, highlights, and a hand painted balayage. If you are in Santa Barbara or the Goleta area please choose Emily to be your stylist, you will not regret it!

I LOVED my results with Caroline. She did an incredible job at getting me the tone I wanted and my hair looked pretty light for a good 3-4 weeks. The only thing is just for a partial highlight with no trim it was $290 after tip, which is just incredibly out of my budget. But I wish it was cheaper because I felt so pretty and the results were amazing!! read more

I recently came in to get a balayage from the stylist Caroline and the results incredibly surpassed my expectations !!!! I have very very thick curly hair and am always hesitant to go to new places bc of this. But WOW, i definitely will be returning. My hair came out so beautiful i truly feel like an entirely new person. Caroline is the most radiant and gentle hair stylist. Honestly, I think I got one of the worst haircuts I've ever had in my whole life at this place. I've been there a couple times before and everything was decent, but this last haircut has somehow made my hair look stringy - and I have a very full head of long hair! I've been considering chopping off the bottom 5 or 6 inches just to get rid of the damage done even though I always wear my hair long. Really dissiapointed -- I know other people have good experiences there. Maybe its just the stylist I got. read more

I called yesterday to see if they were able to fit me in today, and I'm so glad they were. The woman on the phone was very understanding and accommodating about budget and timing. When I came in this morning there was a small hiccup with scheduling, but I didn't mind too much because the ambiance was great and relaxing while I wait for my stylist. I was with Emily and she did a great job on my hair! I normally spend 1.5 to 2 hours each time getting my haircut because I have long and thick hair, but she was pretty quick without sacrificing quality! She was really attentive and helpful during our consultation as well and I trusted her with my hair! Overall I will definitely book my next appointment here if I'm in town. read more

Carol has been styling my hair for over 20 years. She always listens to what I want and does an amazing job on my hair. Her daughter Emily has now joined the salon, and she is such a valuable addition. I have never seen such camaraderie in a hair salon - if one stylist needs an extra hand, the other stylists jump in to assist. I always feel well taken care of. In addition, the selection of retail products such as shampoo and conditioner is extensive. The atmosphere is clean, warm and comfy. I would recommend any of the stylists at Monarch - Carol, Andrea, Nancy, Emily and Sylvia - they are all great. read more

GLORIA! I came in a mess, over stressed and losing hair. I needed highlights and a new style. Gloria pulled it off, again! Love Marcie, the owner, and have gone to her for over 11 years and followed her to 3 salons. I've lived out of town for the past 7 years, so I don't get my hair cut and highlighted at Monarch as often as I used to, but I make every effort to combine a trip to Santa Barbara with a visit to Marcie. Marcie always listens to my concerns and requests, and she always seems to be able to intuitively gauge my comfort level when change is involved. She's honest, no nonsense, and still manages to be warm and friendly, too. The salon is clean and bright, not pretentiously styled. I always seem to be able to get an appointment within a couple of days of my requested day/time, if the day I'm looking for is booked up already. I don't think walk-in is ever an option, although I'm sure it's not against policy or anything. They are just busy folks. read more

I took my daughter in for a 1 inch trim, it took 8 minutes with a shampoo. No blow dry, no style, just a quick trim. The woman charged me $35! For an 8 minute trim? I got ripped off. read more

Monarch is a bright, and sunny salon with easy parking. The stylists are experienced, talented and fun to be around...they've been working together for years. Carol is my stylist, but Marcie, Nancy and Andrea are great too. I've seen people of all ages here...kids to seniors. On a typical day, the salon bustles with laughter and conversation...and I always leave looking and feeling great. If you are looking for a casual, unpretentious salon, Monarch offers a great experience for a very reasonable price! read more

Monarch Hair Studio is the place to go if you want a great cut, style, color, whatever at a reasonable price by friendly, professional stylists. My stylist is Carol but have also used Marcie. Been seeing these ladies for 20+ years. I'm a no frills kind of gal and they let me be me which keeps me coming back year after year! Plus they gave both my kids cuts for years, and still do even tho my kids are college grads. read more

He kept checking in with me to see if he was applying to much pressure, which he didn't! I asked for a nude gel mani, which he provided as well. The color he chose was one of the best choices, usually the nudes have too much of a pink undertone, but this one was a great choice. I was in and out in under an hour for both services. came in to get a French tip acrylic set. The woman that I had do my nails (I'm not sure of her…read morename, but she had short bangs with some orange blonde highlights) was rude right off the bat. She was not trying to make any sort of conversation, which is fine, however she was having a conversation with the previous people. She asked me what I wanted in a rude tone, but I gave her the benefit of the doubt and showed her a picture of what I wanted. I said I want this exact shape and length, the only thing I want to change is the color (from red to white). Once she started, she added glue to my nails and started putting on the extension tips. However, she didn't measure correctly and ripped them off my nails. I was taken aback, but again I understand mistakes with measurements can happen. Then she was applying the acrylic, and when I tell you I wish I had meta glasses or had been recording I really wish I had. I have never seen application done like that before. I thought it was her first time applying acrylic on the nails. The application was sloppy, and the acrylic kept falling off in clumps with my nails ending up super thick and bumpy. She asked me if the shape was okay, and I said the shape is fine, but I would appreciate it if you are them thinner. She kept getting aggressive and saying that she could not make them thinner. To which I asked again, and she replied saying that she didn't want to do that because they would break and I would complain/call and come back the next day for a replacement. I told her that I would not be back, and because I am paying for these nails, if she could file them down. (Keep in mind, if she had applied the acrylic correctly, this would have never happened.) Then she proceeds to get upset and asks me if they look okay in a very rude manner. She even turned to her coworkers and started talking about it (I assume, because of her facial expressions). I asked her why she was mad, and she said she wasn't yet proceeded to keep talking very loud with her coworkers. Finally we get to the French tip part and she got annoyed when I showed her the picture for reference on how I wanted the French tip part and some of them came out a little squiggly, but at this point I'm defeated and over it. I would not recommend getting your nails done here, the service was horrible. Notable mention: I had little cuts , and she kept pressing really hard on them while doing my nails. She also ended up cutting me with the nail drill and said sorry in the most monotone voice ever.

I recently got a gel manicure here and unfortunately I wasn't pleased with how my nails turned out…read more I noticed that my nail tech seemed new to doing nails, which doesn't always mean the service will be bad! everyone has to start somewhere. However, I left with my nails filed down to the point where they were very short and sensitive, and the shaping was uneven. The gel polish application also wasn't consistent. I chose a red color and there were sheer spots where you could see through the polish. It also wasn't applied close to the cuticle, and there was cured gel left on parts of my nails, which made the application look messy. I still paid and tipped because the technician was kind, but unfortunately this was my second time visiting and I wasn't impressed with the service either time. I unfortunately will not be returning. Disposable liners for the pedicure which i always appreciate. The regular pedicure is very nice and compared to some other spots i've been to , felt like a deluxe. Staff is very pleasant and gentle ! Offered a drink which was lovely , delicious coffee. Will definitely be back for a manicure and all my pedicure needs . Everyone here was extremely nice and understanding. My appointment was with Camie. She made me feel so comfortable and even took extra time to make sure my piercing was lined up straight. LOVE Monarch!! The salon has a warm and inviting atmosphere and I always enjoy my time there. All of the stylists are experienced and friendly. I have been going to Andrea for years and she always does a fabulous job with my cut and highlights. She is also a whiz at styling and has done my hair for numerous events.
