I go to the Minnetonka office, but there is also a Maple Grove office if that is more convenient. The dental hygienists I've had clean my teeth have all been skilled and are really good at accommodating the patients to be sure the experience is as comfortable as possible. One thing I really appreciate about the people I have worked with here (and from chatting with other patients) is that they aren't preachy or judgey about your teeth. I feel your thoughts, you haven't been in to a dental office in years and you're intimidated or maybe even embarrassed. Don't worry! Even if you haven't been to the dentist in years, go in and they'll get you started on caring for your teeth without all the lectures and shaming. Give them a try, I think you'll like them.

I'm a dentist, and I love my dentist and hygienist!…read more Julie is the best hygienist...so conscientious and caring with lots of experience! She's thorough, but also non-judgmental when you're home care isn't perfect. I'm always comfortable in her chair. Dr. Phillips is a highly trained cosmetic dentist that I sought out to do my work, now that I'm retired. So far, she's done one crown and it's my favorite! I'm truly looking forward to having more complex work done by this talented professional. The front desk staff is also wonderful; I feel so welcome, and they couldn't be friendlier!

As someone who prefers female dentists, I love that the staff is all women. :) The team - Dr. Phillips, Julie, RDH, Kara, RDA, and the front desk staff - are friendly and thorough. The main reason this rating is 4 rather than 5 stars is that I felt they recommended work I didn't really need, specifically a crown. Dr. Philips recommended a crown on my bottom right molar where I had a root canal in 11/2017. I'm 8 years out from the procedure and neither the endodontist who did the root canal nor the 3 general dentists I saw between 2018-25 said I needed one. Though she said it's common practice to place a crown after a root canal to avoid the tooth from breaking, I'm reluctant to undergo a procedure on a tooth that has caused zero issues for 8 years. At first I thought she found something other dentists missed but later realized that 4 other dentists (endodontist followed by 3 general dentists) would have said something sooner if I really needed a crown. Other than the root canal, there was no abnormal findings clinically or on the x-ray that convinced me to follow Dr. Phillips' recommendation that I get a crown. Now, if I had a cavity, I would get that filled right away to avoid further decay. But when none of my previous dentists over the past 8 years told me I need a crown and I'm not having pain in that tooth, why create work when none is needed? She also recommended fixing a small chip on one of my front teeth and Invisalign from my bottom teeth, though both were cosmetic so I declined. By comparison, my previous dentist of 5 years NEVER recommended any of the above work. To her credit, Dr. Phillips wasn't pushy about getting the work done. When I asked if it's likely I'd lose the tooth over the next few months if I don't get a crown, she couldn't say. I know it's not always possible to predict medical/dental outcomes but her not knowing told me that I didn't have to make a decision right away and I'd likely be fine without the crown. If the recommendation for a crown was made because I had pain and/or a fracture/other abnormal pathology was found, I'd be more on board getting it, especially if I had been going to the practice for years and didn't need dental work beyond cleanings until now. But as a first time patient to the practice, having a procedure recommended for a tooth that hasn't caused pain or other issues for 8 years makes me question whether I truly need the crown or it's financially motivated. I moved back to my home state in late March so I cancelled the cleaning previously scheduled for April. If I were to see them again (as I want to move back to MN in a few years) and they recommended any dental work beyond bi-annual cleanings, I'd get a second opinion before agreeing to anything. However, I'd more likely find another dental practice that is more conservative in their recommendations, similar to the dentist I previously saw prior to moving to MN.

To give this Dentistry by Design a 1-star rating is very generous on my part. This is a horrible…read morevendor on so many levels. I obtained a treatment plan and the cost of this plan from my dentist in Florida. Since there was extensive work required the amount of this plan was very high. Before, I committed to starting this treatment, I was going to obtain two more estimates and obtain additional treatment plans. Dr. Rizvi is a dentist in my insurance network. Although I had been to this facility in the past, I was not overly impressed with it. However, in reviewing Dr. Rizvi credentials on the website, I was impressed with him. I was led to believe from his website that he could do the extractions and do the implants. I emailed Dr. Rizvi from Florida and told him I wanted another opinion and could he give me an opinion and a treatment plan. Dr. Rizvi agreed to meet with me and said this visit would be of no charge. Not only did he charge me for this visit he did not give me a treatment plan and an opinion. His solution was to make referrals to an oral surgeon for extractions and a periodontist for implants. I declined his referrals as my current periodontist would do the extractions and implants. I went in for a cleaning at Dentistry by Design. The hygienist was planning to do x-rays which I declined, and I explained to her that my periodontist had done x-rays and in the past week and that I had paid $596 for this work. I had given Dr. Rizvi a flash drive of these x-rays. She appeared to be miffed at my refusal for x-rays and asked the dentist if she should proceed with the cleaning without x-rays. She did proceed with an abbreviated cleaning as it only took 15 minutes, and cleaning usually takes about 45 minutes to an hour. I emailed Dr. Rizvi and requested that he not invoice my insurance. I explained to him that since the hygienist had done such a shotty job, I was going to have to have them recleaned. Dr. Rizvi did not call me to further discuss this matter, but he did bill my insurance company. Not only did they invoice the insurance company, but the explanation of benefits showed that they showed a tax on the service. I called the business agent and told her I did not think taxing me for this service was legal. She assured me that it was legal. I contacted my insurance company, and I was informed that I should not be taxed. I again called the business agent at Dentistry by Design, and I was told it was a provider free even though on the explanation of benefits it clearly states it is a tax. I again called the insurance company and was told that a provider fee was not legal if it was an in-network provider. The insurance company said they were going to file a complaint against Dentistry by Design. Another concern is with the appliance that was made when my front teeth were extracted. This appliance is poor fitting, and it is causing multiple sores in my mouth. In a recent visit to another dentist, she filed the appliance and so it fits better. A lesser concern is their poor communication with me. They were to call when my appliance was ready, which they never did. I had to call them and when I asked if the appliance was in, they said they needed to check and was told they would call me back, which they never did. I had to call them, and they told me it was ready, but I needed to wait to see if I could pick it up. Once again, I had to make another call about the pick up of the appliance. Another concern was bad information about pricing. I also inquired about the cost of crowns for my implants, and I was told $7,000 per implant. This seemed to be an extraordinary cost as most crowns range from $2,300 to $3000. I again questioned the fee and a different person said she thought the original quote was for a total implant even though when I questioned the first person about the crowns, I made it clear I was only talking about the crowns she gave me this very high quote. It should also be noted that my experience with Dr. Rizvi reveals that he does not do implants. It should also be noted the internet shows Dr. Rizvi as an oral surgeon, and yet he was going to refer me to an oral surgeon for my extracts. Mary Ann
