I came in after a long time of no insurance and a lot of work that needed to be done. Always had difficult teeth (constant cavities no matter what I do, crooked, chipped, missing some from no insurance when I just needed to take them out to make it affordable.) They worked up a whole timeline for me, being super open and ready to explain the start to finish of everything. I'm so relieved. They prioritize health and focus in order of what needs to be done in a sensible order. Thanks to that, I trust them a lot! I had my first wave of repairs done and wow - two hours of work and zero pain? Even the numbing injection was painless. They told me to be open if I felt anything when they started and I slightly did and they thanked me for saying something and numbed me up more. Nothing after. I'm usually nervous but after that I won't be. Never thought in my life I'd be excited to go get work done. I trust them and I am so appreciative of them! Awesome practice. Can't wait to give a full smile after I say that in the future.

As someone who prefers female dentists, I love that the staff is all women. :) The team - Dr. Phillips, Julie, RDH, Kara, RDA, and the front desk staff - are friendly and thorough. The main reason this rating is 4 rather than 5 stars is that I felt they recommended work I didn't really need, specifically a crown. Dr. Philips recommended a crown on my bottom right molar where I had a root canal in 11/2017. I'm 8 years out from the procedure and neither the endodontist who did the root canal nor the 3 general dentists I saw between 2018-25 said I needed one. Though she said it's common practice to place a crown after a root canal to avoid the tooth from breaking, I'm reluctant to undergo a procedure on a tooth that has caused zero issues for 8 years. At first I thought she found something other dentists missed but later realized that 4 other dentists (endodontist followed by 3 general dentists) would have said something sooner if I really needed a crown. Other than the root canal, there was no abnormal findings clinically or on the x-ray that convinced me to follow Dr. Phillips' recommendation that I get a crown. Now, if I had a cavity, I would get that filled right away to avoid further decay. But when none of my previous dentists over the past 8 years told me I need a crown and I'm not having pain in that tooth, why create work when none is needed? She also recommended fixing a small chip on one of my front teeth and Invisalign from my bottom teeth, though both were cosmetic so I declined. By comparison, my previous dentist of 5 years NEVER recommended any of the above work. To her credit, Dr. Phillips wasn't pushy about getting the work done. When I asked if it's likely I'd lose the tooth over the next few months if I don't get a crown, she couldn't say. I know it's not always possible to predict medical/dental outcomes but her not knowing told me that I didn't have to make a decision right away and I'd likely be fine without the crown. If the recommendation for a crown was made because I had pain and/or a fracture/other abnormal pathology was found, I'd be more on board getting it, especially if I had been going to the practice for years and didn't need dental work beyond cleanings until now. But as a first time patient to the practice, having a procedure recommended for a tooth that hasn't caused pain or other issues for 8 years makes me question whether I truly need the crown or it's financially motivated. I moved back to my home state in late March so I cancelled the cleaning previously scheduled for April. If I were to see them again (as I want to move back to MN in a few years) and they recommended any dental work beyond bi-annual cleanings, I'd get a second opinion before agreeing to anything. However, I'd more likely find another dental practice that is more conservative in their recommendations, similar to the dentist I previously saw prior to moving to MN.

She's thorough, but also non-judgmental when you're home care isn't perfect. I'm always comfortable in her chair. Dr. Phillips is a highly trained cosmetic dentist that I sought out to do my work, now that I'm retired. So far, she's done one crown and it's my favorite! I'm truly looking forward to having more complex work done by this talented professional. The front desk staff is also wonderful; I feel so welcome, and they couldn't be friendlier!

Endless sky and mirrored blue water as free and open as the day the receding glacier left it. How is it I discovered Dr. Salmela's somewhat nostalgic one-man Dental Office poised on the edge of this fair city of Deephaven; just a 10 minute bike ride to the private beach of Robinson's Bay? It's like finding hidden treasure. Dr. Salmela doesn't advertise. He doesn't have to. When I see him, he is smiling and asks how my aging parents are getting along in their senior living complex. He tells me that he visited the State Fair with his wife and kids and soon I am comfortably seated in his dental chair, feet up, enjoying efficient, individualized attention. I start each day with a steaming blast of espresso or Starbuck's featured dark roast. But this indulgence has left its ill effects upon my not-so-pearly whites, and try as I might I am unable to bleach out traces of the dark coffee blends. Following a dental exam and consultation, Dr. Salmela revs up his steely sonic flex cleaner brush, which gleams like the weaponry of a super-hero; shooting vapors of water with micro sonic vibrations undetected by the human eye. The results are stunning. I can feel the smoothness of my newly cleaned teeth. I have a fresh taste in my mouth, and I smile brightly as Wendy, the Dental Assistant holds up a hand mirror for my approval. Taking a detour before heading home; first stop is Starbuck's coffee, and then I follow a tranquil bit of road that wanders up a hill and down to the lake. I have been drawn to the Lake by the good people of Dr. Salmela's Dental practice, and return for the gentle, experienced dentistry and consistent results. Listening quietly as the water laps meditatively over the rocks that lie beneath the shallow waters of Lake Minnetonka, I take a gratifying sip of my Pumpkin Spice Latte. Thank you Dr. Salmela and Cheers, here's to finding hidden treasure!
