Mongolian Grill is an AYCE buffet style restaurant. They give you a small bowl and you walk around filling it with ingredients that their chefs cook in from of you on a large "grill". There are plenty of choices from which to choose. Meats: lamb. beef, chicken breast, Korean marinaded beef. Seafood: Shrimp, Surimi, salmon. Vegan: tofu, falafel. Noodles: lo mein, rice noodles, udon, pasta. Vegetables (not all listed): bamboo shoots, water chestnuts, mushrooms, green pepper, onions, spinach, hot peppers, cabbage, carrots, potatoes, bean sprouts, broccoli, cauliflower, and more. Then there are about 14 sauces to choose from. You can go with one or mix. And, there are 20 spices to select from. Choose what you want. Pass to the chefs and they cook it up. There are thousands of possible combinations. It can get busy and you may have to wait 8-10 minutes for your food to taken and cooked. I don't care for their technique for cooking. Because they have divided the grill into 12 zones, they don't really "stir fry" you food. The flavors don't really mix well together. They need to toss the food a bit more so the flavors and spices mix. There is a little salad bar with lettuce, cucumbers, potato salad. macaroni salad pickled beets and a few more items. The night went they had a chicken noodle soup and minestrone soup. It's out of the way for me, but if I were passing by sometime in the future, I would return. read more

It's always a treat to dine at The Mongolian Grill in Whitby. It's a unique experience, featuring fresh ingredients with the flavours of your choice. AYCE grill as you select. The raw bar has different types of beef options, chicken, shrimps, fishes including salmon, crab meat, veggies and more. The sauces section has 12 kinds sauce. The spices section has 21 spices to select from. The servers will provide a small bowl to pick up raw items. Once done picking up the items, sauces and spices, hand over the bowl to the chefs. They will grill while you watch. Nice experience! Servers will keep providing fresh bowls till you decide to stop. It's better to select smaller quantities and have multiple trips to the raw station and to the grill to experience various combinations. Ambiance is nice, well decorated, clean and bright. They also have separate rooms for large groups or team events. Service is average, however it's mostly self-serve. Finding a parking spot could be challenging as the lot is shared by a cinema hall and half a dozen other restaurants. 2nd time since 5yrs ago, (we live far away) still a great experience. I agree with reviews from a few years ago about the salad bar- its weak selection and location in the corner isn't worth the trip. I understand why they maintain it, but they either need to move it to other side of the grill filling station or get rid of it. Contrary to previous reviews, the protein selection was top notch- lamb, korean beef, mid-size shrimp, AAA Beef, chicken etc was fresh and clean. The vegetable were also fresh. The available sauces and spices will cater to all tastes. The grilling station is efficient and well organized. The cooks take pride in their work and their workstation. Restaurant is clean, nice decor and lovely atmosphere. Not sure what the complaints about the bowl size are really about- its all you can eat! You can go up as many times as you want. You can do the same dish over and over or you can make up new dishes to try. I guess people want to make less trips between their table and the grill? Some will say its pricey for all you can eat ($35), but its still way cheaper than Mandarin ($50). The service was quick, friendly and attentive. Alyssa took care of us. There's nothing Mongolian about Mongolian Barbecue, which is what this place serves up (it's from Taiwan) but it's still pretty decent. You choose various ingredients and sauces, and they'll be grilled for you. It's all you can eat too. Due to covid-19 there've been some changes - you no longer fill the bowls of stuff to cook yourself, but fill out a sheet of paper and someone will do it for you. This reduces your flexibility. For example you're limited to one protein per order. You can still ask for half portions (so you can try more combinations). Although each bowl comes with a carb (rotini, chow mein or rice noodles), they give you rice and tortillas to eat your fryup with. When I ordered rotini or chow mein I got quite a lot of noodles, but rice noodles was a modest portion. This might be useful if you want to pace yourself. Besides the Mongolian Barbecue, there's also a soup and salad bar, but I had to ask the server about it when I saw it on the way to the washroom. There were 2 soups (chicken noodle and vegetable), the usual salad components, potato salad and coleslaw. The soups were decent, and the potato salad and coleslaw were ok. They have daily specials too. It was Friday and martinis were $7 (usual price $9.50). I had an El nino martini. It was decent - not dilute, though by no means strong. Given the breadth of choices, not all combinations of flavours worked. Though you kind of only have yourself to blame, since you make all the decisions. I had 4 gos at it: Shrimp with rice noodles, bean medley, water chestnut and bamboo shoots, fried with Shanghai and lemon sauces and topped with Mongolian spice, black pepper and mixed herbs was ok. The shrimp were pretty small, but the water chestnut was nice and crunchy and there was quite a lot of it. Marinated beef with chow mein, minced garlic, bean sprouts and diced tomatoes fried with teriyaki and Mongolian Fire sauces, topped with beef spice, mixed herbs and parsley was pretty good. It was overly flavourful, though, possibly since the chow mein soaked up the sauces too well. There was also too much edamame and chow mein. This was the only order I cut with tortillas and rice. Calamari, rotini, tofu, mushroom and edamame fried with szechuan and honey garlic sauces and topped with ginger, lemon pepper and seasoning salt didn't work so well. There was too much rotini and it was too soft. The tofu was a shade too soft for stir frying, and the calamari was a little limp (still okay, but not as firm and fresh as good calamari should be). The sauces were only alright. Turkey sausage, rice noodles, onions, zucchini and diced tomatoes fried with BBQ and lemon sauces and spiced with cajun, oregano and basil worked the best of the 4. The flavours went well together and the ingredients complemented each other. The turkey sausage was much better than expected - it was really tasty. read more

My wife and I visited the Mongolian Grill in Whitby for the first time May 3rd to celebrate our 49th wedding anniversary. Our server, Alyssa, was very attentive and explained everything to us about how things worked. She made sure that we were comfortable with the process and checked in on us several times. She even brought us ice bomb to celebrate!! The food was excellent and such a nice treat to see the food prepared in front of you without all the preservatives. The room was very serene and relaxing. I've been to this chain a few times but first time at this location. Was here for a mini party dinner. Restaurant is big and perfect for parties and events with a private dining area on the second floor. This place essentially is an all you can eat stir fried noodle / rice place. You basically choose any meats, seafood and various veggie toppings along with your favorite sauces and seasoning to add that extra flavor to your liking. They even offer Halal Chicken as a selection. Food gets tossed into a hot stir fried grill by a chef and cooked right in front of you. Not only do you get a nice selection of all you can eat noodles but also if you have a sweet tooth, they offer a wide selection of desserts for very reasonable prices. FYI the cheesecakes are right from Cheesecake Factory! They even offer daily specials including Weds $5 desserts and Thurs Family Day 25% discounts. Service is amazing and very friendly staff. Just left this place and I am so incredibly furious. I had 2 x $25 gift cards that were purchased last October. The waitress explained to me that the restaurant does not accept these cards any longer as the ownership has changed hands. I requested to speak to the owner who attended my table only to tell me that I was not able to use my $50 worth of gift cards as the Mongolian grill changed names from JKs to JBs Mongolian Grill when he purchased it. The owner then proceeded to give me a cell phone number for the previous owner to call him to get him to refund me my money. I responded to the man that I thought this was bad business and maybe he should take my gift cards and honor them and call the previous owner for his own reimbursement. So, I find the key with going to the Mongolian grill is knowing what to do in order for your food to turn out, since you are the "chef" They are under new ownership since the last time I went. I went in the past and my food was a little dry since I didn't add enough sauce. I reserved a bowl to add some sauce on the end and my food went from a 3 to a 4. They have an all you can eat option which is great if you are hungry and looking to having different options. They have so many options to please the vegetarian, for those who eat halal and even those who have a sweet tooth. Personally, I think their desserts are a really good way to go if you are looking for dinner and dessert since they are Cheesecake factory Cheesecake and the cakes are so good. I actually really enjoy the coffee at the end with the cake. They were the perfect pairing. Would make a cute date night before or after a movie. Can't wait to go again when they are open. read more

The only reason for two stars is because the concept itself is unique and seeing your food get cooked in front of you was a nice touch as well but, aside from that it was a lacklustre experience. Service was extremely slow which was shocking because the place was empty and when we asked for more bowls the waitress gave us a look as if we were overdoing it. Lady! It's all you can eat, the bowls are the sizes of tea cups and this was our second bowl chill a bit. The selection of protein was limited but the worst was the carb selections which was white rice that was stuck together in climbs, really dry Asian noodles and pasta which also saw some better days. Undeterred I loaded up on veggies and sauced the hell out of it. Most of your meal ends up left on the stir fry station so once your meal is done it's like less than a quarter of a cup of food. Been going here for 15+ years. Now under new management and their efforts to save money and increase profits is painfully evident in the downhill quality of the entire experience. Salad bar located outside the washroom, selections are not worth the trip... Very sad really. Stirfry options have been downgraded to cheapest available ingredients of questionable quality. Sausage has been replaced with turkey sausage, no more lamb, shrimp is tiny resting in a bin of sludge, gone are the luscious fresh vegetables replaced with whatever is cheapest. Cross contamination risks are everywhere around the grill, appalling! Really obvious new owners care nothing about quality or customer satisfaction. $20 for one trip with a small bowl, AYCE is $25, but you must ask for another bowl to make additional visits to the grill, not a very tackful approach to providing an enjoyable dining experience. The novelty of "Mongolian grill" wears off quickly. So many alternate dining options available nearby. Better value for your money elsewhere. Have hosted numerous family events at this location because it was a fun and enjoyable meal. This was our last visit. Would not recommend. Dine somewhere else. read more

Go up to the grill, you can't mix meats... okay, never heard of that rule. Selection is quite sparse. Includes lots of pasta, though. Sauces and spices left a lot to be desired, very underwhelming. Alright, let's check out the appetizer bar. Where is it? Oh, just outside the washrooms... in the corner. Oh look, the creole soup and tomato ravioli is all canned quality and full of sodium. Enjoy the wiff of the toilets as you go by. The salad bar looks like its been sitting there for days. No thanks. I don't want to get food poisoning. Service: Wait staff were great. Friendly and chatty. No particularly fast or anything. Good enough. The "chefs" are like 20-something kids who look like they're working a fast food joint. I enjoyed my meal so much! The restaurant has been recently renovated with really modern colours and textures. It's a huge space which makes it PERFECT for holiday parties and corporate events. Plus, because each person can make their own meal there are no awkward moments of trying to figure out which dish everyone is down to share. The biggest surprise was the expanded selection and way higher quality of meat than it used to be. That and they have Cheesecake Factory cakes meaning I don't have to trek all the way to Yorkdale for a high quality sugar fix. An entertaining novelty with poor service, but quality food. I've been here about 6-8 times now, and always this location, although I am sure their are locations. Mongolian Grill all but cries out that it is a chain restaurant. Like the other reviews explained, you sit, order a drink, have a salad and/or soup, then go fill up a bowl of raw meat, vegetables, sauces and spices before giving it to the cooks as they prepare it in front of you with cooking swords. When you return to your table, a bowl of steamed white rice and flour tortillas will be waiting for you. You have the choice of a meal (once) or a feast (unlimited visits to the grill). I think the difference in price is about $3.00, although I always fill my initial bowl to the very top, I have never needed the feast. The restaurant is not very big, and the staff tries to keep from opening the 2nd floor whenever possible, even if there is a wait at the front door, which is very inconvenient in the winter time. VERY COLD! The staff has always been friendly, but all they really do is bring you drinks, clear your plates, and bring you your bill, and it always seems that they are either too slow, or too understaffed. Either way it has been a problem. Earlier I mentioned that I have never had the "feast", just the "meal", yet I always seem to get charged for a "feast", so my biggest tip is to MAKE SURE YOU CHECK YOUR BILL. Don't get charged for the wrong order. Even though I love the food, and the ability to create and fine-tune my own dish, the service is not good enough. The concept of this restaurant is unique and had me intrigued. I was excited to create my own bowl and have it cooked in front of me but felt overwhelmed when it came down to it. Seeing uncooked meat in the open (on ice) was a bit unappealing to me. Anyways, I embraced the experience and filled my bowl with uncooked beef and vegetables. There was plenty of choice and I found myself unsure what to sauce to pair with my choices. Adding spices was also a bit tricky but I chose some and the cooks whipped it altogether. The meal was pleasant, not amazing but enjoyable none the less. There also was a salad and soup bar available and included in the cost of the lunch stir fry. I liked the bean salad which was tasty and heavy on the dill (which I like!), the beets and pickles. The cottage cheese was a surprising option but I enjoyed it as my dessert. We also ordered a side of tortillas and salsa, sour cream and cheese. The wait staff has it pretty easy, only having to take empty plates and refill drinks, yet we had to go all meal long without a refill of water (and our meals were spicy!) This is not fine dining or great food ... Its dining entertainment. You are the chef as you fill your bowl with with veggies and raw meats then hand it to the kids who move it around with wooden sticks on a giant circular flattop grill. (btw- am I the only one who wonders about raw meat out with the public...) While it is kinda fun to do, its not an ideal way to cook stirfry if you really want some depth of flavour, control the doneness of veggies or avoid burnt garlic etc. Even with the large variety of sauces and spices available everything seems to taste the same or becomes dominated with spice or is a mix of cooked, undercooked, overcooked or burned. For $18 pp at dinner I would rather have something prepared by a chef (or a line cook) in a logical order with care and enjoy it, rather than charred food slapped around with hockey sticks by minimum wage high school kids. Is it fun and worth a chance? - Yes but go for lunch and save some time and $ Is it worth going back to? Not really but everyone has different standards on food and it's preparation.. read more

Confused they rushed us to fill a second bowl, as all of a sudden they were closing. We were rushed out so quickly I didn't even finish my beer. The following morning both my partner and I were mildly ill. Would not recommend would not return. The flavours and food are underwhelming and boring. Gross This has an All-You-can-eat buffet of mounds of noodles, meat, vegetables of all kinds, and soup. Its not all that great, and just about none of it is recognizable as Mongolian cuisine, no dumplings, horse or mutton They serve all kinds of random crap, including a fair bit of mexican food, your "mongolian grill" bowl can have salsa, sour cream, pico de gallo - since I presume thats what Americans expect from ethnic food. I observed a number of seriously fat people at the restaurant, who are obviously drawn in by the All-you-can-eat. I'd be up for trying Khorkog, but I would not go back here. read more

DO NOT GO HERE!!!! We had a party of 15 people for a Birthday. The service was awful and the manager is a horrible human. We asked to borrow a pen to fill out some paperwork and gave it back to the waitress. The manager accused of STEALING this pen (which he claims cost $700) and CALLED THE POLICE. He then would not let us exit the building and blocked the exit- in such an extreme way that caused a 7 year old girl to begin screaming and crying because she was scared. We then spent one hour in the parking lot with 2 police cars and 3 police officers while they reviewed the camera footage and FOUND NOTHING. We will be filing a harassment complaint with DRPS. That 7 year old cried herself to sleep because she thought the police were coming for her. No wonder this place had a 2.5 star rating. read more

It's definitely not authentic Mongolian. Lets start with that. It is a Western Stir Fry AYCE. This place is located in a plaza with a movie theatre in Whitby, tons of parking so that was nice. There are also a ton of other places you can eat at in this plaza. Came on a Wednesday night, the place was pretty dead, only one waiter waiting on tables but that was all they needed. The place did not look Mongolian at all so you wanted a Mongolian Grill experience this is not a place I would recommend. We came here because it was close to my friend and I didn't feel like pub food so I said why not. They have the meal and feast option. Meal is one stir fry bowl or a feast is all you can eat for an extra $4. But the price of a meal was already $19 (which is not all that cheap considering...) The meal includes a salad, soup, and one stir fry. I loaded up my salad bowl was pretty much everything so I had enough to take home (because I like to make my dinner in lunch for the next day). The soup did not look appetizing to me... Salad bar was standard, they had one mix, 6 dressings, macaroni salad, potato salad, beets, pickles nothing mongolian once again. Now the stir fry, we were told not to mix meat due to cooking time (which I understand, but that's also how they get you go for seconds!). But I mix sausage with pork because meh. The selection was not amazing, standard. Noodles with vegetables and an array of sauces and spices. The grilling part was quick because it was a slow night. The taste of everything at the end was once again meh. They gave us rice and tortillas, not sure why there were tortillas....but sure? I put some of my stir fry in the tortillas and not mad about it. Got my carbs in for the night LOL This place is pretty much a Western version of stir fry. Overpriced. Would not return. Rather eat at a real Mongolian grill for that price.
