The last time I went to the island, after visiting every year for over ten years previously, was the summer before this brewery opened. I had the opportunity to take some time off and reacquaint myself with Monhegan with my husband who was visiting for the 1st time, so our 1st experience at the brewery was together! We were working on our Maine Brewers Guild beer trail maps for our anniversary, so vacay and checking items off our list too! The brewery is an easy walking distance from the ferry, and even easier from where we were staying at the Monhegan Inn. Their outdoor seating consists of a lobster trap wall enclosure with various seating, a couple of picnic tables on the lawn area, and one table, stairs and some standing room with rail space on the small deck area. ALL of these were in use when we arrived! The staff we met in their tasting room were year round islanders and SO friendly. I tried the Burnt Head Berliner Weiss with the Blueberry syrup and my husband tried the IPA. We each chose to just get full glasses as opposed to a flight for the inaugural visit. The blueberry syrup complemented the tartness of the berliner and he found that the IPA had a nice resin, not juicy, hops taste to it. The 2nd day of our visit we went for flights. This time I had the Berliner sans syrup, the IPA, the black cow milk stout and a red. Very happy with all my selections, and when the Stout was getting low, I asked them to add a little of the Blueberry syrup to it, which was a home run for me. He made similar choices for his flight. Because of the casual, easy going vibe of the brewery, and the island in general, we also met several couples while there who we had some great conversations with while imbibing! Before catching the ferry back to Port Clyde on our last day we stopped in for one past pint and picked up both styles of their hoodies, a t-shirt and a glass... So, needless to say, I highly recommend a visit here! read more

This place is super cool. I've been coming out to Monhegan for over 20 years. This place has only been around for a few of those, but it's hard to imagine Monhegan without it, Good beer and a decent food cart, but what really sets it apart is the vibe. Locals, hikers, and people just off the boat for a few hours just chilling and having a few. The staff has all been there for years, and they're all great. Just good times. read more

I just got home from my first visit back to Monhegan in over 30 years. After taking the trail to and from Lobster Cove to see the wreck of the DT Sheridan, my family stopped into Monhegan Brewing Company to slake our thirst. My cousin recommended a beer flight consisting of Trap Stacker ale, which was pleasantly malty with a toasty aftertaste, Mad Cow Milk Stout; a rich stout that makes Guinness seem bland and tasteless in comparison, Crow's Nest IPA, which is just plain refreshing and perfect after a hike, Island Farm Double IPA; malty, hoppy goodness with a piney hit that's Monhegan in a glass and Rusticator Doppelbock; just a damn good beer! The brewery has just been joined by the Bait Bag food truck operated by the amazing Lisa Brackett who is an expert at frying seafood and fries to absolute perfection! My cousin got the fried scallops which were just golden brown and delicious outside without being greasy and just barely cooked at their core. You don't get this level of perfection even in a five star seafood restaurant. I had the fried clams and fries. These are not your typical clam strips. Nope, these are whole clams, bellies and all golden brown and delicious outside, tender and briny on the inside without a hint of the rubberiness you expect in a fried clam, Between the Brewery and the Bait Bag, this place is a five-star home run and should not be missed on your Monhegan trip! read more

I went on a day trip with my boyfriend to Monhegan, and we did a great hike around the island, with the sole purpose of ending our hike at the brewery. It's such a great little brewery, and one that you would never expect to be on a remote island; but, given its tourist reputation, it makes perfect sense. The selection was nice with a few brews on tap with some sodas as well. We had a flight of the drafts, and I also grabbed a glass of root beer. The ale that they had available with additional blueberry syrup would have been much better without the syrup in my opinion. It overpowered the beer. Their lighter beers were not my all time faves, but I did thoroughly enjoy their darker beers. I will definitely stop in to Monhegan Brewing each time I find myself on the island :) read more

These guys are relatively new to island as of this review -- been maybe 3 years since they were founded. They have grown so much and have an excellent atmosphere. The beer is great, it's cold, you can get a tasting flight priced reasonably. They have great snacks. The owner is Matt Weber, who is also the constable on the island. He is a terrific guy. Highly recommend any day of the week they're open. Awesome way to start wrapping up the day, before walking around the corner to see a beautiful Oceanside sunset! read more

We stopped here and bought a couple small growlettes for our picnic lunch. We got on root beer and one ginger beer. They were both so good. We will definitely be back. I recommend trying these two drinks for sure. Can't comment one the beer but it looked good! read more

We visited Monhegan Island for a day and came back for an extended stay! Each day we went to the brewery and had an amazing experience each time! Outdoor seating, consistent sanitizing and contact tracing! Oh.... and the beer? Varied, delicious and amazing (hence our multiple trips!) Therwas something for everyone, although I love my browns and ambers and there were no options, I still found the Black Head Stout and English golden ale were very flavorful!! We both bought shirts as reminders of our great experience.... we will be back!! read more

A really impressive brewery on beautiful Monhegan Island. Order a beer or a flight in the taproom, and enjoy your drinks outside at the picnic tables. There's no indoor seating, but you probably didn't come to Monhegan to sit inside. A storm blew over while I was there; the picnic tables are under tents, so we were all set (with some assistance from the staff, who were quick to run outside and tie the tents down). I tasted four beers and enjoyed them all. They also make their own non-alcoholic beverages, so be sure to visit even if you aren't a beer fan. read more

The craft beer may be great but I wouldn't know. I made the ocean transit of 12 miles from Port Clyde because of the word that the holy grail of A&W afficianodos: craft Root Beer was on tap at the brewery. We got there in spite of 40 foot waves. O K, a bit of hyperbole. However, there is no level of hyperbole too high to describe the nectar of the brewery's Root Beer. Sail, swim, and hike as fast as you can before they run out. You can also get a growler to return to the mainland or meet new friends by sharing on the boat's return. I didn't share! read more

I've been making summer pilgrimages to Monhegan for the last decade, and when I visited Monhegan Brewing Co. for the first time in 2013, I did a spontaneous backflip. There's nothing not to love about this place; prime location, very friendly and local owners and staff, and most importantly, delicious and varied brews. Most recently, I've been enjoying their IPA and their German sour. But they're rotated often, so I'm excited to see what's in store next time I'm out there. This newly opened brewery has great friendly service and a perfect beer (and location) to end a long hike at Monhegan island. Te only reason I am not upping the star rating is that during the four days we were there, no root beer was on tap for our kids. They are just getting started, so I expect they will fix that very quickly, and when we were leaving the island, they indicated they had purchased a lot more ingredients for root beer, so your children can now safely visit the brewing company and have their own NA beer so the whole family can quaff together. read more

Delicious beers, especially from such a small island! I tried the sampler on a day trip and enjoyed most of the beers. I enjoyed the Stout the most, and although I'm not a huge fan of Kolsch, this was one of the best ones I tried. Visiting Monhegan Island is such a cool experience, so it makes sense that Monhegan Brewing Company is just as cool. Even in the midst of a storm, the brewery was a blast and the staff was very helpful (from talking about beer to securing tents in the rain!). What an awesomely neat brewery on the small, charming island of Monhegan. There are a handful of beers for purchase, both refrigerated and not for take home. There were maybe 4-5 beers on tap and the few we had were amazing. The two women working there were very helpful, patient, kind and so welcoming. There is NO FOOD here, so grab some down the path before heading over and you can eat outside where there is plenty of sitting room with tables. They have novelty t shirts, stickers, glasses, etc. inside and offer $1 bags with Monhegan Brewing Company labeled on them, which can comfortably hold 6-8 beer bottles. Go here. What a pleasant surprise! My family spends a week in Port Clyde every summer, and our day trips out to the island have always been my favorite part of the week. When my partner and I landed on our own this year and heard talk of a brewery on the island I initially thought it was a joke...a brewery? Fantastic delicious beer brewed on this idyllic small island 10 miles off the coast. Proprietor is one of about 40 people who live on this island year-round he is a lobsterman during the off-season. Brewmaster is an accomplished veteran of the Maine craft brewing industry. By the taste of the black IPA that I had he knows what he is doing! Very friendly place. You can buy 7 ounce small beers to try different ones if that is what you would like they also have root beer and ginger beer for the kiddies. Great addition to the island! read more

The beer was very good, and I think this will be a big success. I would say that the brewery lacked the best customer service that I was expecting with such a young fresh business and crew. On the road to the brewery there was a sign that advertised tastings, but when we got there we were offered a taste of beer only when we agreed to buy it. There wasn't the affability that I expected from such a small enterprise; the staff seemed disinterested in talking even a little bit about brewing. read more
