Food: I got their crab rangoon, clam chowder, bacon wrapped scallops, and mozzarella sticks. The crab rangoon were delicious and freshly made. The clam chowder was buttery and full of meat and potatoes, but could have used a bit of corn starch to thicken it up. The bacon wrapped scallops were good but could have used a maple glaze or thicker bacon to enhance the flavor of the bacon. The mozzarella sticks were gooey and full of cheese but needed a bit more seasoning in the breading. Overall, the food was tasty and not overpriced. This is a great place for a family lunch outing on a nice day. Service: The cashier was nice and helpful. Ambience: The restaurant has a small gift shop inside that has a bunch of cute gift options. There are multiple small picnic bench areas under an awnings and with a view of the water. This is a great spot and I look forward to trying out more of their menu. read more

Gurney Trading Company is located a quick and beautiful drive down Gurnet Road, before you get to Harpswell. Plenty of parking with a great view. They offer fresh seafood to pick up and take home to cook yourself, take out, or dine in their quaint eating area. The food is off the boat fresh! I hate to write this. Because I have LOVED Gurnet Trading and have talked people's ears off about it FOR YEARS. But I went the other day and, wow. No bueno. I popped in for a quick, little bite. Two cups of chowder and a slice of pie. It took FORTY MINUTES to get two cups of already-in-the-pot chowder and a pre-made slice of pie to me. That's unacceptable anywhere. I can't swear to this, but it also seemed like the portions were smaller than the last time I stopped by. Maybe not. But it sure seemed that way. Then I learned something from one of the staff. Apparently Gurnet has new owners. Now, I'm excited that someone wants to keep the place going. But they seem very, very off their game, to the point that I'm not super interested in returning for far-too-long service, not-inexpensive prices, and small portions. I'm not mad - I want Gurnet Trading to do well. But the new owners (if that's an accurate update that was shared with me) need to get the place back on track. read more

My wife and I were on a week long coast long road trip of Maine. It was a BLAST, I highly recommend going from Portland, up to Bar Harbor and back. We stopped at this roadside stand and ordered a full lobster. It is more of a take out place, but they have some picnic tables by a pretty river if you want to eat there, which we did. The lobster took awhile and we didn't have any utensils or a cracker, but we asked for one and they let us borrow it, which was cool. They had some great canned beer you could have with your food as well, but I soon got to realize that it was a take-out mostly place. The prices were very reasonable and the only thing I would recommend is buying a nutcracker if you are on vacation and want to eat here. Loved this place! Sometimes side of the road places can be scary but this is a must go to spot if you want amazing seafood with a cute little view. The place is part store part restaurant where you order at counter and wait for your name to be called. Staff was helpful with ordering and I got the amazing lobster roll where bun fit it perfectly and the fried clams. These clams were so juicy sweet and tender I couldn't put them down. Then my dad not a seafood guy got the fantastic bang bang shrimp and potatoes salad. These were perfect for a hot sunny day. I have been going here for years for my fresh seafood needs but have never tried out their restaurant side. My wife and I went here for lobster rolls today and enjoyed our visit. As I have said before, I am obsessed with lobster rolls and am VERY particular about how they are done. A true Maine lobster roll should consist of insanely fresh lobster meat with just a touch of mayo (Hellman's in my opinion) on a toasted, top split hotdog bun. No chives, lettuce, celery, herbs, ciabatta rolls, etc. This place definitely understands this, and their offering was very good. The meat was super fresh and sweet.... maybe a tiny bit too much mayonnaise but that is being picky. The only thing preventing 5 stars on this visit was the summer staff taking the order. A slightly warm greeting or an acknowledgement that I even made an order would go a long way. I shouldn't be the only one saying "thank you" in a business transaction. Also, over the years, what used to be a rustic setting has turned into a slightly dingy restaurant. A good cleaning and replacement of worn out tablecloths, etc. would help. read more

Awesome local spot loaded with fresh seafood choices. Overall reasonable prices. The cheapest lobster roll prices I had seen during my week in Maine in July at $14.50. A hefty whole blueberry pie at $19 and scallops at $17 were pricier choices that day. We ate the lobster and crab rolls inside - there is a small amount of seating inside and some more tables outside. Both simply prepared and delicious. We enjoyed the pie later - it was very heavy and loaded with fruit. Nice end to the meal. Most people who came in got take out. They do also have a fridge of drinks and grab and go refrigerated/frozen items with containers of chowder and other things. Employees were really friendly. Tried the smoked fish dip which was delicious - they gave a few packaged crackers to eat with it but we needed more so we used fresh veggies to dip as well. I'm so glad I stopped in here! Nothing but amazing service, selection (menu is HUGE!), and amazing seafood. Their clams are the best I've had in my life. Lobster rolls are amazing as well. On a visit to the area my SO and I decided we needed to have a lobster roll to make the trip authentic. We searched reviews for a good place near us, and Gurnet Trading came up . It's a tiny little place on the side of a busy road. Looked promising. I have never had a lobster roll before, so have nothing to compare. There was plenty of lobster, very little mayonnaise. However, the prices were a shock. SO had a regular bun, mine was gluten free ($3 extra). We had a haddock chowder, two lobster rolls and one piece of blueberry pie. The bill was a whopping $65! In the middle of a long road in rural somewhere in Maine is a small lobster, seafood shack for takeout with open door seating. Seeing such a small shack on the outside, I was immediately impressed by their extensive menu when I stepped inside. They had everything seafood from raw, cooked, to fried clams, lobsters, fish & chips... Prices have gone up from the older photos, but the overall prices of the food items on the menu was very reasonable. Portions were also very reasonable. Lobster rolls were amazing and were only $16! Did we order wrong or are my partner and I missing something? We were excited to stop there after all the great reviews we read, but left feeling like we really should have gone somewhere else. We ordered the haddock chowder, 2 crab cakes, their version of fish and chips (I forget what it was called on the menu), side of onion rings and 2 sodas. The bill was $60. For two people. The chowder was so scalding that it was impossible to eat. Once it cooled down we found it pretty watery and not that tasty. The crab cakes were so overfried and soggy that they collapsed on themselves, the haddock (fish and chips) was fine - not soggy but overly breaded and frankly too oily. And if you're looking for a view, there's really only one table (maybe two) of the water. But the staff was definitely friendly. If you go, maybe stick to something cold and not fried. read more

Found this gem on the side of a road after tourist lobster season has ended. I was happy I was able to find a spot that has whole lobster outside of Maine! It was steaming hot even sitting outside in the chilly weather as we enjoyed it at their picnic table by the river. Remember, whole lobsters are more fun to eat and isn't meant to fill you so appreciate the flavors of the lobster itself. They'll serve it with butter, but the butter is unsalted and unflavored. A lot of people forget that the world is running out of reliable workers. people who show up everyday, do their job, regardless of how the public interacts with them. i have seen so many people be rude and just straight up disrespectful to the staff for absolutely no reason at all. This staff works hard everyday to put out good cooked food and fresh fish/lobster/shellfish. **REMEMBER**, the people who work in these places, don't always set the prices. they do what they have to., to make it by. too many people are judgmental and are looking for something "wrong" to complain about. And yet, they show up everyday to put out the best, for the public, who at times, don't deserve it. This place is a little shack that the locals appreciate and the non locals are amazed by. No place is perfect, and people need to remember that. This place has done nothing but put out good customer service and food.
