I am beyond furious with the MSPCA after my experience trying to adopt a Jack Russell puppy. I'm a 21-year-old college nursing student with a flexible schedule and extensive experience with dogs. I've cared for my 10-year-old rescued Jack Russell full-time, and I've been planning to adopt a second dog for over a year. Unfortunately, this shelter treated me with outright disrespect and completely dismissed me as a serious adopter. Now, I fully understand why so many people choose breeders instead of dealing with shelters like this one. I arrived at 11 a.m., waited an hour for them to open, and came fully prepared with supplies in case the puppy came home with me. But instead of allowing me to even see the puppy, the staff sat me down for an invasive, condescending interview. The woman who spoke to me treated me like I was a child or completely incapable of owning a dog, despite my obvious qualifications. I'm a dog trainer, CPR-certified, and regularly foster and babysit dogs. I clearly explained that I live independently during the school year with my current dog, but she insisted that I needed my mom's permission to proceed because she owns the home where I'd be staying over the holidays. When I explained that my mom couldn't answer the phone because she was working (and that my mom isn't involved with my current dog due to allergies), the woman implied that I was hiding something. She even made rude remarks like, "Does your mom even know you're here?" as if I'm not a grown adult making my own decisions. I also told her my dad fully supported the adoption, but because he was out of town for work, his approval didn't count. It was insulting, disrespectful, and downright infuriating. I was completely prepared to provide a loving, stable home for this puppy, but instead, I was judged, dismissed, and treated like I wasn't good enough--without ever being allowed to see the dog. To top it off, they acted like I didn't know what I was getting into, even though I've cared for a Jack Russell for 10 years and know exactly what their needs are. This whole experience has left me furious and heartbroken. I've waited to adopt instead of buying a dog because I wanted to do the right thing, but now I understand why people turn to breeders. MSPCA lost out on an amazing, responsible owner who was more than ready to give this puppy a great life. To anyone thinking of adopting from this place: don't waste your time. They'll treat you like you're not good enough, no matter how qualified you are. I will be adding pictures of my current dog to show how loved and spoiled he is--and now I'll be reaching out to breeders. MSPCA should be ashamed of how they treat potential adopters. We adopted our little girl, 12/29/2024. Megan, our adoption counselor was amazing. She took her time getting to know us, showed great care, and enthusiasm. As first-time adopters, we weren't sure what to expect. However, the whole adoption process was so swift and painless. We brought home our new family member that day! They really go above and beyond with medical and temperament testing on their animals. They truly care. I filled out an application online and went in person to see if I could find "the one" they gave me all the time I needed and my little girl had to stay an extra week for an eye surgery. Never had an adoption agency NOT want the dogs to check out together first! The next day they then called to tell us she wasn't medically cleared - not could they tell us if she was contagious to our dogs- and could we come the following day (though they couldn't certify she'd be cleared). Horrible customer service. I had the date wrong for a spay in September, which I had rescheduled. They then called me to reschedule because they made a mistake a had double-booked me. We were rescheduled to December, but we had Covid and I called and they said they would hold my deposit and call in January to reschedule. I called today to do that and I was told that my deposit was gone, and they would need another one, and that the first deposit wouldn't count towards the spay. This was the first time that I was told I would lose my deposit, and they were NASTY and ARGUED that they only had record of my cancelling, and NOT them. They also had the nerve to state that the deposit covers them when they lose money for cancellations, but I hardly believe that since they are in the habit of double-booking. We have adopted two cats from this shelter and each time was a breeze. The first cat had behavioral issues and the second one was a special needs senior, so that may have been why it wasn't a very difficult adoption process for us. I'm sure they want to adopt those cats out ASAP because it's not as common for people to want them. With our first cat, we took him to a vet and used our complimentary 30 day insurance, provided by the shelter. Everything except the fecal testing was covered. The second time around, the shelter itself provided the cat's first checkup. We were required to pay out of pocket for all services, this time, and were told to request reimbursement from our pet insurance. This really rubbed me the wrong way because that was never communicated to us beforehand and we expected our insurance to just be accepted. However, after further investigation, I found out that the insurance company does not cover preexisting conditions. So even after we submitted our claim, we were not reimbursed. After getting our cat checked up at MCSPCA after adopting her, the insurance provided from them didn't cover her checkup, even though they told us it would. We ended up spending 200 dollars out of pocket. We were contacted by the clinic and they kindly credited us the amount we should not have paid, for the checkup. Paying for the preexisting condition blood work for our cat wasn't a big issue, it was the fact that it wasn't communicated to us to begin with. If you plan on adopting a special needs cat, be sure to ask about what the insurance covers, beforehand, as not all adoption volunteers know what is covered or not covered. read more

We've been supporting the Monmouth County SPCA for many years now and had a wonderful time this past weekend at their Valentine's Day Brunch fundraiser at McLoone's Pier House in Long Branch. The shelter was completely renovated a few years ago and the potential adoptees are housed in clean, roomy, bright, glassed-in enclosures and "gazebos" that allow them freedom to move around, play and cuddle with friends, and see and be seen by visitors to the shelter. The shelter also hosts a low-cost vaccination and spay/neuter clinic, the Vogel clinic, and the Maureen O'Brien thrift shop, which has currently been commandeered to store pet food donations being used to aid pets impacted by would-be Hurricane Sandy. The SPCA is also temporarily boarding pets impacted by Sandy until their owners can again care for them. Last summer, the SPCA also worked with the property owners of the Freehold Raceway Mall to not renew the lease of the mall's pet store and opened an adoption annex of the shelter there in it's place showcasing kittens and puppies, many of which are rescued from over-crowed and high-kill shelters in the South and Puerto Rico. Yelp should have a ZERO or negative review options. We adopted a heavily scarred pit mix from this shelter. They told us ZERO about the dog- only that she was from an over crowded shelter down south and had no history on her. The exact phrase, repeated by several workers was "We know nothing about her history." After a one week period (where she hid in a room all day) did her personality come out- and it was huge! ie: overwhelming. We hired a behaviorist associated with the shelter, and he seemed to know our dog's entire history- which was bad. The behaviorist was extremely cautious with our pit rescue and told us to be very, very cautious with this dog. In the shelter-associated trainer's words, our pit bull has had a horrible early life- he called her by the shelter's name, not our registered name (which I told the behaviorist in person and on written form beforehand). So obivously this shelter hides an animal's past history- to pump out the adoptions. I hired a different trainer who got our rescue pit bull under control- in about 30 seconds. After a brief training period we now have a sweet, affectionate girl, though still heavily scarred. We love our rescue pit bull, and very happy our dog is living her second life with us, but whenever this SPCA's name comes up our blood starts to boil again. read more

This facility needs an attitude adjustment. I went to donate 3 cases of Science Diet d/d (prescription) dog food. The woman at the front desk told me to put the cases in a red bin. I put the cases in the bin when a SPCA volunteer started to remove the cases and was bringing them back into another room. I followed helping him by carrying the third case. The woman (receptionist) jumped out of her chair yelling at me to stop. That I had no right to go any further than the front desk. She was loud, rude, disrespectful and totally ungrateful that I was donating $150.00 worth of food. I told her I was following the volunteer. She didn't want to hear it. I told her that I would never donate ANYTHING to them again - money or food. Some of these volunteers are complete amateurs! On a second note - I adopted a cat from them a few years back. The cat was given to me and told it was in good health. They completely lied. The cat was suffering from a parasite called Giardia. I didn't know it had the parasite and took the cat home. I quarantined the cat for almost a week and then felt it was acclimated enough to socialize with my other two cats. This place is very unprofessional. We have tried on many occasions to adopts dogs from here but they have always given us a hard time. They are extremely biased towards Rottweilers and gave us crap for wanting to adopt a Pitbull mix. It wasn't recommended that we put the two in the same house because they would "be aggressive". When we insisted that our dog was well-trained and not to mention SUPER SWEET, they allowed us to bring her in for a meet and greet. Needless to say, it did not go well because the inexperienced dog trainer was extremely tense, they had a hose ready for the dogs, and wouldn't let us be involved at all. I have been a general volunteer at the Monmouth County SCPA since 2018. I walk dogs, help clean puppy enclosures, help socialize puppies if there are any there that day (they get adopted pretty quickly!), do laundry, etc. The facility is beautiful and clean, and the animals are well-loved and cared for. The health and safety of the people and the animals in the shelter are priorities. There is a wellness clinic and a law enforcement office at the shelter as well. If you visit, please don't open a dog's enclosure on your own. Some of our lovable pups are escape artists, and it just makes unnecessary risk of injury to someone if you open the door and the animal dashes off to the great outdoors (potentially knocking someone like me over) instead of greeting you. The dog doesn't know you, and he may just be more interested in distant sounds and scents at the moment than he is in you. Instead, get hold of an adoption counselor out in front and ask to see the animal you would like to meet. They're authorized to arrange for positive "first dates" between animals and prospective adopters. I love this shelter, and I can say that the people here seriously care about what's best for the animals in their care. It's also a great place to volunteer! read more

This place needs to train their employees and trainers better to understand there pets especially miss understood breeds ( Pit Bulls , Rottweilers, etc. ) . I was there to visit a dog named Bali , this was the 1st dog we were paired with. She was a young female Pit Bull who was removed from her home , living outside and removed by the Police for lack of care. ( they assume the worst and believe she was trained to be a aggressive dog ) They have no other history of her background. When my children 16 & 13 years old and I meet this dog she was lovable and playful and there was an instant connection . The dog was not yet dog tested with other dogs. So as we waited for this process this it what we viewed. First they put Bali on a leash out side the training area, and they already have another dog in the fenced in training area. This dog was not the friendliest and may not have the best 1st match for a meet and greet. ( in my opinion since I have raised pit bulls for the last 13 years ). The trainer and a volunteer bring Bali to the fence to meet the other dog. Being a powerful female and breed she was pulling at the leash to get to the other dog to smell and check it out. ( keep in mind they have her listed as a 2 1/2 year old but she seem younger and her teeth are so pearly white she may be a little over a year old ) Bali did not bark, show teeth or any type of aggression. She acted like a curious pit bull. They then leash tested both dogs, the other dog was timid and Bali was still pulling towards the other dog still with not signs of aggression just curiosity. Because Bali was so strong and you have young inexperienced trainers with this type of breed they were scared and deemed Bali viscous after that one in counter. Now they labeled her stating that she can not be adopted if your neighbor has a dog or other dogs on the street. They claim that she may kill another dog. How can they make those assumptions based on what I have witness and what they call testing. They basically condemned this dog to pound life or death. The statements that they make with scare away any potential adopter. After this they tried to persuade us away from this breed of dog making statements that this breed of dog is not good with other dogs. This is such an off the wall statement , it shows their inexperience and prejudice with this breed at this location. This entire experience has inspired me to write to other Pit Bull rescues and other experienced rescues to tell my story about the horrible experience with Bali and to help save her. I feel they will never will let this pet be adopted due to the criteria's. read more

If I could leave no stars I would. I applied to adopt a 9 month old beagle mix puppy. I checked all the boxes- work remotely every day. Fenced in yard. No toddlers, just my adult daughter. I have 2 older greyhounds and as per their requirements we had to do a dog to dog meet. That happened outside in 100 degree heat. The puppy was playful, my greyhound not playful but tolerant of the pup. Based on this interaction, the staff decided the puppy was not a fit for my older dog. I didn't matter that I would oversee the dogs and train the puppy. They had their mind made up. They did not have the best interest of the puppy at heart. read more

I have been a volunteer at the MCSPCA for many years & have experienced many of the areas within. They are truly one of the best shelters for an animal, but no shelter is perfect. The staff at the SPCA truly cares about animals & are incredibly dedicated to their well being. Volunteers can help out in many areas, including walking the dogs & socializing the cats. All make the animals happier & more adoptable. They offer a low cost spay & neuter clinic, micro chipping, fecal tests, several blood tests at much less than a vet & even have a food pantry for those that need help feeding their pets. They do anything they can to keep pets with their families. Injured & sick animals are accessed by the vet staff & when possible, rehabilitated & put up for adoption. On a daily basis, they have dogs, cats & rabbits for adoption & sometimes even reptiles, rats & mice. The adoption counselors can be a bit 'tough' on some potential adopters however, they see the worse cases on an almost daily basis. They are extremely careful about making sure an animal gets adopted by an appropriate family, which isn't always appreciated by potential adopters. No one wants to see any animal returned if it can be helped so they tend to err on the side of caution. read more

VOGEL CLINIC within the Mon.Co.SPCA is a SCAM operated by SCAM ARTISTS. That's why they do NOT have any prices listed on their web page. Prior to going 2/13/19, I was told a 3-yr rabies shot was $30. On that date, I get 3 cats into the patient's room, they tell me the CAT rabies is $90/cat. I freaked out saying, "you quoted $30/cat." They said, "The generic is $30 - let me see if we still have it." They did and charged me $90 for three cats. On 2/18/19, I call to make an appointment for 3 more. I am told that the EXAM fee is $50 plus rabies shot. Again, I freak out! I told the representative that I was just in there for $30/cat rabies. She said, "we must have waved the exam fee, which we will not do this time." NOTHING IS IN BLACK 'N WHITE with these scam artists. So, be super cautious in dealing with them. Until they actually post their FEES on their web page, you are at their whim. read more

A young deer somehow jumped a fence into my back yard ( part of a forest ) but could not get out. It was so sad watching it . Thankfully, there was plenty for the animal to eat on the grounds. Two adult deer kept coming back to it ( on the other side of the fence ), but fled whenever I came near it. I called SPCA after a few days & they called me right back + sent an animal control officer( Dan) within a short period of time. Unfortunately, the deer kept running away, but would not jump the fence in the forest or go thru another gate leading to/from my yard.. The next day, this entire thing was repeated with the same result with another Officer ( Scott ). Finally, today Scott brought two other officers to help capture the poor thing. The thought was to capture it , check its health and bring it to another safer area to be with other deer. However, today it actually ran to and thru the open gate. Hopefully it found its way back into the nearby forest and found its parents & friends. I was so impressed with the way the people at SPCA handled the situation. The operators who took my calls were wonderful, very concerned and extremely professional. The Animal Control Officers ( Dan, Scott and the others) were also terrific and did whatever they could to handle the situation as safely as possible . It was obvious from their comments that they also loved the animals. I want to thank them all for the way they treated the entire situation. I've only had great experiences with MCSPCA as an adopter and have been a monthly Pantry Pal donor for years, which is why when strays started showing up in my yard, MCSPCA was my first call. The staff was pretty responsive but I am very disappointed to say that if you find an animal in need out in the community, the SPCA won't help unless you pay a hefty fee. I managed to trap one cat who was feral and paid $100 out of pocket to have her spayed. That's their TNR program, which they brag on their website is the largest in the state -- I'm glad they offer it, but it's not charity. I am especially concerned about one cat who seems very friendly and meows to come indoors (we have a family member with allergies so we can't have her). The SPCA would charge a $250 Good Samaritan fee to take her in to evaluate her for adoptability. If they decide she's feral, she'll just be returned to the neighborhood or destroyed. No thanks. I've started reaching out to other local rescues, who have been fabulous and will hopefully help us get the friendly cat trapped and adopted. I'll be donating to them from now on. read more

Well, since the last time I reviewed this place, we lost out first cat and now, we lost our second one. Not wanting to have our home without a pet, we started searching the shelters. We made our way back here. As it was the last time, it is a pretty good sized shelter. We only looked for cats, so we only searched in that section. They always seem to have a pretty large number of cats available for adoption. The staff were all friendly and helpful in our search for a new kitty. They gave us as much info as they could about whichever ones we were interested in. Now I realize to some that not only this shelter but all shelters might be a little wary of prospective adopters. You have to understand that there are a lot of shi**y people out there who are more than willing to misuse and abuse animals. These workers see this on a daily basis. You must fill out an application. The staff will watch you, see how you interact with the animals. Hear what you have to say.........AND, they will judge you!! It's their job!! No one wants to see an animal end up with someone who has no business owning one. I'm sure mistakes have been made, but it is all for the good of the animals. We found one of the two cats we ended up adopting here.A little kitten. The process was painless and quick. Most of the cats get spayed and whatever shots they need. The fee came to about $140. Might seem a bit high to some, but remember you are helping to support an organization that needs the money and puts it to good use. Please don't ever buy from pet stores or animal mills when there are so many beautiful loving animals just sitting in shelters waiting to be loved and return that love tenfold!! read more

Please do not bring your animals here to be spayed or neutered! They are not board certified vets. They said they were experienced with English Bulldogs and possible issues with males with one testicle that did not descend. They started surgery on my dog and realized they were not familiar with the rare issue he had and closed him back up! They then tried to charge me a bill over almost $600 for the services "they did provide". He has been in horrible pain ever since and I will tell everyone I know to please go to your trusted veterinarian practice vs. going to Monmouth county ASPCA where they are not familiar with all specialty surgeries! read more

There were 4 employees standing behind it but none of them even acknowledged my presence. Once someone finally did, they seemed like I was inconveniencing them to see a specific dog that I was told was in the back, not where all the other dogs were. She told me I had to fill out an application before I could even meet the dog and that someone would be with me shortly. I waited 20 minutes and a volunteer was finally ready for me. When she saw which dog I wanted to meet, it took 3 people to figure out that she had been adopted two days before. How can they not realize which dogs they do and do not have? It appears that none of the employees I interacted with cared at all about their job, whether they were a volunteer or an employee. read more

The day I randomly walked in to drop off some donations and found the love of my life Mya , formerly Tippie. I had met another dog named Zoe a week before but she wasn't dog friendly so we were on the fence. Kayla (no longer employed there) was helpful the first time but once I wanted i meet Mya it was an inconvenience to her like as if I wasn't a serious adopter because one dog a week before didn't work out. I convinced her to let me meet Mya and ended up taking her home the following day. This was in September and she is the absolute light of our life. She was heartworm positive, had complications while she was in heat, amongst other things. I cannot say enough about Dr. Federson. She saved my baby and she continues to do so. She is an amazing doctor, patient, very knowledgeable. If it were just her, this would be a 5 Star review. However some of the vet techs , adoption people, and receptionists are not friendly or approachable. Overall, the dogs are clearly cared for, they receive walks, training, attention, they all have a bed and toys. That's what it's all about and they take great care of the animals. read more

They only got the two stars from me because I got my puppy there. I work at a Veterinary Hospital and they told me I should get my dogs first rabies shot at the SPCA through them. When I went there I walked into a room full of dogs and cats. The seats were all filled and there was no way I could get my puppy away from another dog. Not only did we wait for 4 hours! But there were aggressive dogs trying to get my puppy. The staff just watched and didn't do anything. After a long 4 hours, we finally got called in for the shot, which we THAN waited another half an hour for a room to open up. My puppy is 4 months old and very frightened easily. When the Technician came in she was not friendly at all towards my dog or myself. She bent down and aggressively grabbed her; and my puppy being scared, yelled and peed on the floor. The girl THAN rolled her eyes and stormed out of a room. A minute later she came back with another girl who than also tried to pick her right up away and scared her once AGAIN. I told the girls she's very treat motivated, they ignored me and decided to put a blanket over her head and trap my poor puppy in a headlock. Once the shot was over I was shocked! If it was possible to leave a no star review I would. But we adopted a dog this past thursday and she is one of the worst dogs I have ever dealt with. First off, she just smells like wet dog constantly. She has some type of cough that she sounds like a smoker and to top it all off the spca are a bunch of liars. When we were there this dog put up such an act that anyone would fall in love with her even with her minor issues that they claimed she was getting better with. According to the woman at spca the dog we got did not walk well on a leash, well I live in a townhome without a fence and do not have an option other than walking her. The spca woman said she supposedly likes to crawl on the grass on her stomach and basically if you give her treats she will listen. When she goes in the grass for us all she does is lock down and refuses to move. My husband walked her when he got home from work yesterday and because she didnt want to go on the leash she pissed right in my hallway. And im sorry but I have never thought a dog could smell so bad. She reeks. I come home and walk in the house and all you smell is her, its disgusting! The couple times she pooped that also smells vial. Ive had lots of dogs in the past and none of them smelled like her. And we were also told she is very timid. When we were at the place she put up a really good front like she loved attention once she got used to you and seemed happy. When we brought her home she was nothing but a lump on a log/basket case. Barely moves, sits there pouting. We are returning her to the spca on monday. We work all weekend so we were not able to return her sooner. She is a very cute dog but her attitude is piss poor. I hope when we take her back they give her the proper training and when the next owners get her that they are shown how she walks on a leash (we were not) and tell them the whole truth not just sugar coat it. read more
