I was driving on I-84 when I noticed my car's temperature starting to rise, so I stopped at Monroe Auto Center to have it checked out. Unfortunately, I didn't get the name of the employee who helped me, but [[HIGHLIGHT]]I wanted to recognize the excellent customer service I received.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] They quickly diagnosed the issue and found that the rear heater core hose had a hole in it. Even though they were unable to perform the repair, they took the time to thoroughly explain the problem, provide recommendations on the part I would need, and answer my questions. They were professional, knowledgeable, and genuinely helpful. What impressed me most was that there was no charge for their diagnosis and assistance. This place is VERY SHADY. I am a 30 year old single female who doesn't know much about cars and unfortunately mechanics prey on people like me and I need to be careful. I'm not one to write reviews but I felt it was absolutely necessary this time. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Ed is in charge of the shop and I spoke to him many times and it always felt like he was just trying to rush off the phone or just convince me to get more repairs so they could make more money.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] He uses fear tactics as well as high pressure sales tactics to convince customers to spend more money. I took my car here because it would not start. They told me that I needed to get my engine replaced because one of my piston rings was worn and leaking oil into combustion chamber. They told me it would be $6,789 to fix. I took it to a new mechanic to get a second opinion. The new mechanic told me that my car was fine and that I just flooded the engine and to make sure I warm up my car for at least 10 min before driving but otherwise it was fine and I can come pick it up. Needless to say I will no longer be going to Monro Auto and I suggest you do the same. read more

These people use threatening tactics to get you to buy their products at jacked up prices and then took off an inspection sticker of a young woman's car and refused to give her a temporary one until she got her brakes fixed. They then gave an enormous quote for the brakes thinking she was too stupid to see what they were doing. Shame on these people. Do not go here!! read more

In one of those amazing moments of life I purchased a new car and only 3 days later I turn it on and my back right tire is leaking air. Hoping it was nothing I surveyed my tire to discover the culprit a screw that had lodged itself into the tread. Only to add to this it is the day before Thanksgiving and you can imagine everyone and anyone is getting work done. I walked in was greeted by friendly desk staff who asked a few questions waited about 5 minutes and my car was seen. The fix is a plug that is internal and permanent which is nothing out of the ordinary but what I appreciated is them assuring me if the leak was in a place to close to the edge they would not be able to fix it and wouldn't waste my time. Sounds obvious but I can't name the amount of times you walk into a auto repair and start to feel the dread of getting taken advantage of. My car was attended to and in about 20 minutes on my way I went. It was $39 plus tax, which you can dispute if expensive or not but given I walked in and out in under an hour day before a major holiday, they will get 5 stars from me! read more

DO NOT GO HERE. If I could give this place zero stars I would. I went in to get my state inspection done since I just changed my license and registration from another state. I dealt with Edward Felix, the manager, but there was also the mechanic looking at my car 5 minutes into the inspection the mechanic comes to the front and tells Ed that my Catalytic converter has a problem. Ed tells me that my Catalytic converter is ILLEGAL in New York because it's not CARB compliant and so I need to change it to pass emissions. He said that New York just changed its law. He says it would probably be $1500 to get it done but he'll check around to get pricing on parts. While he does that I call my reliable mechanic and ask about this. He says that it is very fishy that they would say that and he's never heard of that. Ed calls me up front again finally and says he called a couple places and he only found one place with the part. He now says it will be $4000 to get the work done but I have to get it done. He even has the nerve to mansplain to me in picture form the "work" they need to do. I say I would need to get the work done another day so I could get out. He tells me that's fine but they will Fail me on my emissions test this time. After I am able to leave with a failed inspection, I cal the DMV to confirm if I need to get this done. On recording, I have it confirmed that I DO NOT need this work done and the catalytic converter I have is legal and good since it is functioning properly. This horrible man tried to scam me out of $4000 for something I did not need done at all. And all of the workers there played along and went with it. I have reported this to the DMV read more

Wish I could do NO STARS. Deplorable service. Swindling manager with a bravado of a maniacal Disney character. He replaced our battery/alternator on our working vehicle with another faulty battery. We came back because of a 24 month warranty and they put yet another faulty battery in the vehicle. After that failed within days, we took the vintage Volvo to another, more competent, skilled, honest and kind mechanic in Newburgh. We were warned by the better mechanic, that Monro Auto service twice tried to fool us. Monro blamed the vehicle for draining the battery, yet this was untrue. The competent mechanic confirmed that they put two faulty batteries in the vehicle and caused more damage to the car than repairing it. With kind confrontation, we tried to return the dead battery to Monro on Plank for a full refund or replacement, still under the 24 month warranty. They refused. The hubris of the manager, Ed Felix, bellowed with misogynistic ignorance when I requested the trade, imploring me to call costumer service, squealing about how he had been out on disability and how this wasn't his problem (see other reviews, he's a complete nut-job, hates women and is very threatened by vocabulary higher than a 10th grade level). He 'called' his superiors, unempowered to handle the situation himself, puffed out his chest and asked us to leave. The anger, fear and loathing in his energy was akin to a bully child losing their turn at bat and not getting their way with the ball. Their immaturity while handling supposed costumer service was laughable. Do not go to this company, ever. It's as if you've stepped into a personal hell that emanates "I hate life and everyone around me, I have no love in my life, so you will know my wrath." Save your money, there are so many other, truly honest upright and kind mechanics in Newburgh that do not have a superiority complexes and attempt to bamboozle their clients with faulty 'new' parts for repairs. read more

This location is horrible. Beware, a bunch of crooks... Arrived and was completely ignored for the first 10 minutes while I'm standing at the front counter. Horrendous, they did not even greet or acknowledge me yet I had scheduled an appointment. First rule of sales-- first impressions matter! Had coupon from their website for oil change which is supposed to include a multi-point inspection, including a battery check and fluid check. Next day, after being serviced, my check engine light goes on. I have mechanics in my family and my boyfriend, who is unfortunately far right now, although unlicensed, is a better mechanic than some mechanics I've encountered! So thankfully I was able to reach out to someone who is more expert on cars and I checked under the hood myself. Turns out I need a completely new battery and my coolant tank was about empty. I'm a very busy woman and Munro really failed me. This location is disorganized, unprofessional and dishonest. This was my 2nd time here and my last! Don't waste your time going here. read more

I was too angry to write at that time then i just got busy. since my car is older i try and do preventative maintenance , regular oil changes etc. So i already had in mind to get a tire rotation and wheel alignment because if anyone knows Manhattan and Queens streets they know about the potholes & rough roads. I went to this monroe after shopping across the street i figured let me get it over with. I tell Ed exactly about me maintaining the car & about a SLIGHT veer to right on highway. Well prices were ridiculous for a 2 wheel alignment! Anyway he "discounted" price & i got 4 wheel aligned. Its done and i go home about 15 minutes away on regular street. I didn't go out until next night got on highway, noticed at 60 the car still drifts to right now at 70 it drifts to left..hmm that wasn't happening b4 aside from that there's a rubbing sound and noise coming from driver side. That morning I went back to Ed start to tell him the problem and he basically cuts me off defensively not their fault. Wow so it's my fault!? He proceeds with his salesman snake talk to tell me about the car being this and that ..uhh hello yesterday my paperwork only said my back strut was worn and now today Christopher Columbus (as i called him) is discovering hundreds of reasons all pointing to me and my cars fault... Ed I've heard you on the phone with other customers doing the same thing. A Female thing? Anyway my blood was boiling in that place, while im not a mechanic i have tons of common sense and also could smell b.s from a mile. He kept insisting it was nothing they did. Cherry on top: after this visit of realignment and 2 tire re rotation i go outside start the car and my airbag light comes on immediately.. wow I've never seen that on. They're so full of $h!t in there that I don't even go back in to tell them because as i said my blood was boiling and i didn't want my boyfriend to come there . I have no idea what's goin' on at Monro auto service located at 64 North Plank road in Newburgh New York. But it isn't good. I went there on June 26 2021 for an oil change, brakes all around and a wheel alignment. Now I've been to the place 3 times and before this visit, I was OK with the work they did. Even though the price is a bit steep. But that's to be expected from a "Chain Store" operation. But this time, they screwed me over. I should have realized that something was wrong when I walked in. The lights in the reception area were turned off. I guess the owner of the franchise is looking to save a few bucks on his electric bill. Which likely means that he hasn't many customers coming in. I elect to leave the car. They had the car for over 6 hours and they didn't call me to tell me they were done. I had to call them to ask if they had finished with the work. Which by that time, they were. I had asked for a 50/50 blend synthetic oil. They put in full synthetic. Which costs more. I made the mistake of not telling them to put in less expensive break pads. They, of course, put in the more expensive pads. But the real issue is the wheel alignment. They said they did the alignment. They told me everything was good, the tires were wearing evenly and everything was fine. But it wasn't When I get the car back, it still pulled to the right. Which is why I bought it in in the first place. So, a week later or so later, I bring it back. They put it back on the alignment machine. This time, they tell me the rear right lower control arm is "frozen" and the bushings need replacement. Which is now the EXCUSE as to why they can't do a proper alignment. They give me the car back, no charge and I leave. They should have told me that they couldn't do an alignment because of the repairs needed BEFORE they tried to align it the first time. Now, the situation with the pull to the right is EVEN WORSE! I asked for the alignment report to show me what they did. They don't have it as the printer on the alignment machine doesn't work and, I'm told, hasn't worked for 3 YEARS! I "may" have let them make the repairs in order to get the alignment corrected. But now, I won't let these clowns anywhere near my car. This place only looks to grab your cash. They'll sell you what you don't want without asking you what you want. They don't tell you the truth up front. When they screw up, it's not their fault. Stay away from this place. You'll be happy you did. read more

I went to Monro for my first car inspection ever. I was hesitant to go there because I read reviews but I couldn't get any other shop to fit me in for an inspection since it's the new year. When I get there, I tell ED this is my first time doing an inspection/first year owning a car and THAT WAS A MISTAKE!!! he starts telling me everything wrong with my car that has less than 28k!! Long story short ED (a name I've been seeing on all the reviews) tells me I need 4 new tires just to pass the inspection which can't be true because 2 were replaced when I got the car. So I tell ED (please remember this name) "hey man I just want to know what I can do to pass and get going I really can't afford 4 new tires at the moment " he then tells me ok instead of 4 tires you just need 2 because the tread was HALF AN INCH TOO SHORT ??????!? These 2 tires with labor and pads costed me almost $900. Beware of his tactics. He will assertively tell you things about your car hoping that you are like me and can't understand all the automotive jargon. I left Monro feeling duped and just disrespected for being honest about not being car savvy and having an inspection for the first time . I wouldn't recommend this place to an enemy . Next year I'll be going to a local shop (Also I work for a chain auto parts store and they told me they don't install outside parts but a driver from my company dropped off parts they told me they didn't use) I could have got some parts discounted and they knew that ....Ed God bless you "Brother" man smh read more

Avoid this place. I have had three mufflers put into the same car in the past 3 years. They all last about 12-14 months just right out of the warranty. Had my well maintained car 8 year old car inspected and monro failed it for for two things: a light bulb totally legitimate would gladly have paid, and 2 dry rotted tires which is totally Nonsense. I have the receipt for the tires which are just over two years old and just over 20k miles: manager refused to look at the tires and said the inspector was gone for the day. Two NYS inspectors at separate places said it was ridiculous and the tires were very good. This is how they make commission selling you what you don't need. The car is no inspected with those tires at a legitimate shop. BEWARE. read more

I used to take my car in for oil changes. 3 of the 4 times they did not rotate my tires as stated they would. Every time I mentioned it Ed would say oh we will get to it next time. Well the next time I was told I need new tires. Fronts were worn much more than the rear. I asked if that was because they were not rotated properly and of course Ed said oh no that would not cause it. He tried to sell me new tires at a very expensive price and acting like he was giving a discount to boot. Well I bought new tires but not here! Vacationing in the Hudson Valley, we went over the Newburgh-Beacon Bridge on a Saturday morning and picked up a screw in one of our tires. After changing the tire to our donut spare, we used Google Maps to locate tire repair places open. Luckily we found this Monro tire center open for walk-ins. The manager was most kind and said he would be able to fit us in later in the afternoon after his scheduled appointments. We had to wait about two hours to get the tire fixed but it was worth it. So far, the tire has held up to a couple of weeks of hard vacation driving and is still going strong--just like the manager promised with the way they repaired it. I just wish this manager and store was in the area we live in as we would definitely use it for other auto repairs/tires. Can't say enough good about the manager and store. Would give 6 stars if I could. You don't often find places like this anymore. read more

I used to take my car here for regular maintenance with no problems but the last time I was there I was told by shop manager, Ed, that my rear brakes were VERY worn and needed to be replaced but, good news!, the rotors were salvageable & that my mismatched tire which was on rear passenger side was ruining my transmission, yet he or his tech still rotated it to the front where it would cause even more damage. When I changed my rear brake pads (did it myself at home) they were only halfway worn!!! After this I swore off going there because I really hate being lied to. So fast forward to this morning I called to get a price to change my transfer case oil and shop manager, Ed, asked if I needed the front or rear done and that they could give me the "Black Friday special" for $80 each... I'm not sure if he misheard me when asking for the service or is really that much of a crook, but there's only one transfer case... Don't know if these things happen because I'm a girl or if it's everyone but trust is super important to me in a mechanic and I don't have an ounce of it in this shop... read more

TRUST is a very important word and unfortunately I did not find that with manager Ed, I brought in my car because it had the engine light on, the diagnose was a misfire, ok...I paid them for the service, the next day the same situation with the engine light on, I came back, and Ed told me it was another misfire, and that fixing it the problem will definetely be resolved!, I paid again for the service, well guess what? The check engine again was on but this time it was worse because the car engine did not turn on to drive! It was completely ruined! Having my doubts I took it to the Toyota Dealer Work Shop, and they confirmed to me that it had an antifreeze leak, and it leaked inside the motor, they told me that I was scammed again and again because Monro Muffler never fixed the real problem!, and the manager Ed was always saying ohhh I got this discount for you, ...just sweet lies! Shame on him taking a vantage on a woman, what a horrible experience!. Experienced scammers. Lied and said I needed work that I did not need. Found out months later that no only was the work not required, but they charged me for fluids they did not actually put in the vehicle. Called Ed to talk about it and he yelled at me, called me a liar, told me "I was done" and hung up. These guys completely conned me out of my money. Person who originally commented on my review (a supposed customer support rep who left her phone number and apologized) never called me. Left her a message, but she never called back. Spoke to several people at the head office, all of whom were rude and seemed genuinely offended that I would call and waste their time by reporting a complaint. Filed a complaint with Better Business Bureau, learned that Monroe lied on my receipt and recorded the mileage as much less than what it was, which allowed them to later state that many more miles had been driven as part of their BBB complaint response. Very clever on their part. This is hands down the worst, most underhanded and dishonest experience I have ever had with a business. read more

I got totally scammed by this place. Went in for inspection April 2017. Was told I need new front brakes and rotors. Had that work done at 92k miles, and got the inspection sticker. Brake problems noticed again at 98k miles. Stopped in and was told they would check as I had a 1 year warranty. They wound up replacing the rotors, pads were still good. Had my car into Toyota due to leaking head gasket at 99k miles (3 weeks later) and was told by Toyota the rotors were warped. Toyota told me to go back as I probably had a warranty. I stopped in this morning and told them about Toyota's recommendation and they told me they already replaced rotors under the warranty and Toyota was lying and they wouldn't do anything further about it as the brakes were fine. Meanwhile, there is an intense vibration in the brakes when I have to make a hard stop or am going down a steep hill with cars in front of me. The brakes are not right. I spent a fortune on this and I got robbed by these people. I drove 92k miles on the original Toyota brakes that came in my car and never had problems till I had them replaced at Monro. I do not recommend. Update 11/20/17 Frank, GM for Monro reached out to me after negative review. He offered to re-do the brakes again at another location near me. I took the car in on 11/15/17. Rob at the Vails Gate location put new brakes on the car. He also said it looked like the calipers needed replacement. He said they looked seized. We agreed he would lubricate the calipers, which is standard during a brake replacement and probably hadn't been done at the Newburgh location previously. Brakes seem OK now. Went to Toyota this morning and they re-checked the front brakes. Brakes are good and rotors are round and unwarped. I asked the Toyota tech if the calipers need replacement and he said they appeared as new so he did not recommend. Bottom line is these people do not really know what they are doing. This was the most botched mess I have ever encountered with my car. I will be going back to Toyota from now on for all my service. They instill a confidence in me that I never got from Monro. read more

One sunny Saturday few weeks ago, around noon time on my way from New Paltz to Yorktown I stopped for gas by Sunoco in Newburgh. While pumping gas, suddenly I've heard big bang and all car shook up. I ran around the car to see what's going on but saw nothing. I turned the key and started leaving, but the sound of some metal my car was dragging made me to stop and look under the car. There were piece of some metal hanging down. The Monro shop on N. Plank Rd. was the only nearby shop open, so slowly and carefully I got there. I told to people behind counter about my car problem and ask if they could fix car to the point that it would get me to Yorktown, where I put it for rest of works to my steady shop. My car went right the way on lift and mechanics called me to check with them what happened. My 15 years old Elantra's gas straps got rusty and cracked and now the tank full of gas was sitting on exhaust pipe. As all system underneath had moved, somewhere on front started seeping the gas and I realized how lucky I was. Within few minutes they explained me how they would repair my car, proposed me with reasonable cost estimate and as soon I said "yes" they started making phone calls searching for needed parts. Mechanic started working on repair right the way and did not stop with occasional assistance of others until the repair was finished. Lot of welding was involved and all repair took few hours. While I was waiting, people behind counter were very nice to me, they even offered to share with them pizza they had as a late lunch. Then the car was done and I was happy to drive it to Yorktown. The car still needed exhaust pipe oxygen sensor. My steady shop at home town took care about it, they also checked how was all repair done and said, that Monro did a good job. My car recently broke down and I had it towed to Monro Muffler in Newburgh. The staff was very helpful. It turned out I had a major engine issue that would be very costly to repair. Monro suggested I call the MFG to see if this would be covered under my 100,000 powertrain warranty. I had to get towed from Monro to dealer and guess what it was all covered!!! Instead of Monro taking me for $2000 + repair they got me to go to dealer at no cost to me. They did not even charge for diagnostic work. Very honest company and I will highly recommend to all my friends. read more
