Quaint, historic, local bed and breakfast. We had a great stay on a Saturday night at the end of the summer. It is not far from town and there is free parking. Rashid was so welcoming and kind. Our room was clean and had a super comfortable bed and pillows! The bathroom was very spacious and everything worked great. The breakfast was delicious--yogurt, omelets, waffles, and potatoes! This was my first B&B experience and I'll admit; I was kind of worried. I feel awkward staying in someone else's home with complete strangers. However, when you think about it, it is still somewhat like a hotel. So I gave it a shot. I genuinely appreciated the hospitality of the property manager. He made my stay exceptionally comfortable and did so with a smile on his face. He went above and beyond to accommodate my gluten free diet to the utmost level; an example is making me GF waffles. I thoroughly enjoyed sitting outside on the front porch the next morning having breakfast brought out to me. My room was very clean and tidy. The bed was so comfy! I could have slept all day....but coffee started at 7 and breakfast was 8-10; so I needed to get myself up & att'um. You could tell some upgrades had been done to the property while still keeping the historic-ness alive. The property was right across from the venue of the wedding I was attending. Purely a happy accident! Not that parking was an issue, but I was happy to have been able to walk to the wedding and keep my parking spot. Water bottles were at our disposal in the mini fridge in the dining room and tea was always available. The key code entry made me feel very safe and I had my own key to my room. I thought it'd be noisy with a room right off the stairs but I was mistaken. I really enjoyed my stay. I suggest some repairs to the shower in the beechwood room, better wifi to accommodate the # of guests, and more attention to the landscaping of the property. I didn't see any other employees on the grounds and I feel like this property manager has a lot on his plate/does most of the work. I highly encourage he hire a grounds crew to help him maintain the land so he has less to do. There are many overgrown plants and some brushes that need to be tended to. read more

There's something idyllic about the shorelines of Michigan. Perhaps its the dunes or the crystal blue water; maybe it's the cool breeze off the lake; or, it might be the pleasant nature of the locals. For me, Michigan beach towns have always made me feel as if I've gone back in time. They make me feel nostalgic for a period well before my birth. So, when my girlfriend and I decided to take a short getaway to South Haven, we felt a Victorian era bed and breakfast would provide a more memorable experience than a chain hotel. Built in 1884, the Monroe Manor Inn was once the home of CJ Monroe, whose father was the founder of South Haven. It has operated as a bed and breakfast since 2004, being acquired by its current owners in 2019. Due to the changing of hands, the inn was certainly in transition during our visit. Monroe Manor Inn is a gorgeous home, located two miles from downtown South Haven. With five guest rooms, a spacious dining room, massive kitchen (for staff use only), several sitting rooms, and a large porch, the guest won't feel cramped. The owner resides at the inn, and he is available at all times. Each guest room at Monroe Manor is different. We chose the Master Room, the largest of the five (hence the name). Complete with a canopy bed and Victorian-style bathtub, it certainly inspired the aforementioned nostalgic feelings. Jumping to the 21st century, there is wi-fi with a smart TV. The best part of a bed and breakfast is the breakfast. At Monroe Manor, you'll get a delicious start to your day. You'll begin with berries and yogurt. While you enjoy that, the owner will freshly prepare cheesy eggs (a house recipe), sausage, and very delicious pancakes. The inn serves French press coffee and various teas. Monroe Manor Inn isn't perfect, but they could be close if some improvements were made. In the Master Room, we noticed that while there was a shower wand, the water pressure was too low to effectively take a shower. However, taking a hot bath was quite relaxing. Monroe Manor needs to further improve its wi-fi. While it is available, we were not able to get a signal most of the time. I'd also recommend that the owners remove the quotes and tacky artwork from the walls. It cheapens the historic ambiance of the inn. I recommend Monroe Manor Inn for your next stay in South Haven. Despite some minor quirks, the inn provides a very pleasurable experience. read more

I saw some old reviews for this establishment, when there were different owners. Those reviews are completely outdated! I have been going to South Haven on short trips on and off for many years. Many times it's been a day trip. This summer I stayed at a B&B right near the lake and it was nice. I called there in October and the owner said that he had closed for the season. I looked online and found Monroe Manor Inn Bed & Breakfast. I spoke to the owner, Rashid, and he was very accommodating from the first conversation. He gave me a good price. I stayed one night and I wish that I could have stayed longer. The place is absolutely wonderful. The master suite was beautiful. My friend came for the day from Kalamazoo, and Rashid said that she could have breakfast with me at no charge. The breakfast was great. The location is off the beaten path and very countryish, just what one could want living in the heart of Chicago. It's only a few minutes ride from the heart of town and the lake. I have been to other B&Bs in South Haven, and this one is by far the best. I can't wait to go back!! read more

Nice little bed and breakfast in South Haven where we stayed 2 nights. Cost was $169 per night, about $180 with tax. It's not on or near the waterfront, about a 5-10min drive...so pretty close to main downtown and pier/beach area. Our room was clean and every room has their own private bathroom. Our shower even came with body sprays and a towel warmer. Our room was decent sized, but there were a couple rooms that were bigger if you need the space. The place is run by this really nice couple, Doug and Nancy, and they maintain the place and cook breakfast. The rooms are all located on the second floor along with a massage room(extra charge, and book in advance). The first floor is the sitting room complete with magazines, books, and board games. Also the main dining room where they serve breakfast(if it's too cold to sit outside) and afternoon wine and snacks. They also have a hot tub in the back yard available if weather permits. Breakfast was great, first day we were served a fresh fruit and yogurt parfait, followed by a delicious french toast and sausage plate. The french toast was amazing....it was crispy and caramelized on the outside but warm and soft on the inside. The next day we got some sort of egg fritata with spicy sausage, tomatoes, and onions with a side of fruit and yogurt. And then a delicious blackberry filled scone...freshly baked. Yummo!!! If you're looking for upscale, luxurious, 5-star hotel stay....then this isn't for you. But if you're looking for a homey, relaxing, non-pretentious lodging...then this B&B is for you. read more

Took a chance and traveled during the pandemic. I figured a bed and breakfast would be limited exposure and a bit more spaced out and was pleasantly surprised when it delivered such an amazing experience. There are about five or so rooms and plenty of space for each room and each has a private bathroom. The breakfast is made by the hosts each morning and they can make dietary accommodations. You can eat on the porch with a selection of tea and hot coffee always available. They also have an ice maker and bottled water in the dining room. I called to let them know I would be in a little later in the evening and got checked in with ease. They have a passcode on the house door so you can come and go as needed. Each room has an individual key and there is enough parking for everyone. My room smelled and was very clean. Each room has a smart tv and they have access to Netflix, if you want. I liked that it wasn't by the touristy areas because you got an extra sense of privacy and peace. It is about a 3 minute drive to the local coffee shop and about 7 to the beach. Meijer and Walmart are close in case you forget anything. The current owners have only had it about a year and my experience seemed much better than some other reviews mentioned. Also wanted to add that even though it is an old house, it didn't feel haunted - 10/10 would recommend. read more

My wife and I have been visiting South Haven during the Blueberry Festival for the past 20 years. We've rented houses, stayed at hotels, and for the past half dozen years or so, have chosen the comfort and convenience of B&Bs. This year, our usual choice was no longer accepting reservations, so during the very earliest days of the Pandemic, (when I thought FOR SURE this "would all blow over" by August) we selected the Monroe Manor Bed & Breakfast, and crossed our fingers. Then the Pandemic Pandemonium began: Schools, businesses, bars, restaurants closed, economic turmoil, millions unemployed, and as the months dragged slowly by, we kept checking two things: The festival website (still on!) and the B&B reservation desk (still open!) so we held onto that flickering candle of hope that we'd still be able to get away for a nice weekend (didn't we deserve at least that much?) Then the two days of Musical Entertainment turned into ONE day and ONE band. Well ... okay, that's better than nothing, but then a week out, we learned that the ONE day turned into NO days, so we pinned all of our mini-vacation hopes on the Monroe Manor Inn. And I gotta say, this was probably the most pleasant and relaxing weekend I've had in South Haven. Turns out, the guy I'd been harassing over the phone was actually the owner (no WONDER he sounded so calm and reassuring) and he runs a VERY nice B&B. You hear a lot about businesses that successfully "pivot" during the Pandemic, and I a lot of time wondering whether he had to change everything around to fit Social Distancing Guidelines, or whether his Inn just happened to be exceptionally suited to make the adjustments to a Global Pandemic. Although we had a large, lovely, airy room, in a beautifully elegant antebellum building which perfectly blended the charm of yesterday with modern amenities (multiple shower-heads, towel warmers, wi-fi throughout, complimentary Netflix on the wall-mounted flat-screen TVs) the true strength of this establishment lies in the people behind it. Rashid, the owner, is welcoming you into his home, and as his guest, his desire to show you true hospitality is evident. So while we did forego the impressive dining room for a more CDC-friendly outdoor setting for breakfast, I was just as impressed with his (okay, probably his wife's) decorative touches, especially incorporating the symbol of hospitality - pineapples - into the decor. The wraparound porch/veranda has ample (and socially distant!) seating for all guests. The place settings, china, silverware, were all exquisite, and Rashid, as your host, could not have been more welcoming, and the full breakfast was both tasty and tastefully plated. I got home last night from my first experience staying at the Monroe Manor Inn. I rented the entire Inn for the weekend, and went there with some of my girlfriends and their grown daughters to celebrate a special family occasion. Everything was more than perfect and exceeded my expectations. Nancy, the owner/innkeeper, was helpful to me through every stage of making this happen. She made wonderful recommendations for winery tours and dinner while we were visiting South Haven. When I had questions as I was putting this together, she was very prompt in responding to any voicemail message or email that I sent to her. It is obvious that this home is meticulously and lovingly cared for. Everything was in absolutely perfect condition. It has all the old world charm of a historic home, yet all the luxurious amenities of beautiful private baths for each room. All of the bedrooms are beautifully and elegantly appointed. My guests went from room to room admiring each other's accommodations! The hospitality was wonderful and the food was absolutely outstanding. This is the nicest bed-and-breakfast experience I have ever had. My family members and guests raved about it and talked about how eager they are to come back-- something we will definitely do! Kudos to Nancy for doing such a fabulous job. She was helpful, has a warm personality, and is very good at what she does! The memories that my family and friends will have of our wonderful weekend are something we will cherish for years to come, and she helped to make it such a great experience. read more

We have stayed here twice once is 2006 and again in 2012. Both times in the master suite. The rooms are clean, roomy and very upscale. There is a giant claw foot tub in the master suite. Breakfast was delicious and it just has a nice home like feeling! In January and February they offer buy one night get one free. We payed $209 for the first night. It's not to pricey compared to other places. read more

Terrible communication... Would never stay here again.. We had our wedding there and communicated all the details... They decided to charge us for bringing food and having people on the porch.. And more people on the grounds then expected. The owners never once seemed happy to have us there at all.. Not very nice at all.. Miserable people... We rented the whole house out for our guests.. This is our third BandB in the South Haven area so we may be a little spoiled but we found the Monroe Manner nice but a bit lacking. The area was very nice, removed from town, but not too far away. You can get to town in less than 5 minutes. The grounds were nice and well kept and the actual house was clean and room was nice. Breakfast was delicious! Very good food and great variety each day. We stayed four nights. The staff is friendly and pleasant. The issues we had were that the room itself needed a little more TLC. There was some pretty big cobwebs and it needed a once over with the Swiffer. The hardware in the bathroom was a bit loose and things just needed tightening up by a maintenance person. The cold water shutoff leaked when you turned it on and there were multiple bulbs out in the room and bathroom. No deal breakers, just a little neglect. Also, the 'art' in the room was completely inappropriate. Pictures and paintings of naked people. This surprised us and made us very uncomfortable. The other issue we had was the missing owner. She was a delightful lady when we talked, but she was hard to find, gone most days and when she did appear, really didn't give us a good overview of the Manor or how things worked. Lastly, their materials were out of date. They advertised wine and snacks every day at 6, but when we showed up one day, the owner told us she hadn't done that in years. They write that you can eat inside or outside, but when we sat in the dining room one morning, they took our food outside as if that was the only option. Again, all small things, but just a few constructive criticisms that we think could make this place really sing. One thing to note about the Master Suite specifically: There is no way to shower, just take a bath. No big deal, just a surprise for us. Again - This is NOT a horrible place. Very nice, overall. I will NEVER stay at this Bed & Breakfast - I had the most horrible experience with the woman owner of the Monroe Manor Inn - she was SO rude and disrepectful that I would highly discourage people to consider staying here. I had called to book a few rooms in July because my family was getting together for the anniversary of my grandmother's passing. I called on the phone to inquire about availability and was informed there were rooms available. I asked about the cancellation policy should anything change and the owner said that as long as I cancel within 60 days of my stay I'm fine and will not be charged. I booked the rooms at that time over the phone and provided my credit card to secure my reservation. About a week later, I was informed that the gravesite memorial service was to be moved to the following week and I needed to cancel the original reservation. I immediately called the owner to tell her of this change in plans - over 3 months or 90 days in advance of the reservation. She was rude and said that there would be a $25 cancellation charge. I expressed that I had never heard of such a fee and had inquired on the phone prior to making the reservation as to what the cancellation policy was. She said "everyone knows that there is a $25 cancellation fee at places in South Haven." I said I have never stayed in South Haven before and would not have known and that I specifically asked her what HER policy was BEFORE giving my credit card information. She said the information is on her website and that I should have done my due diligence. I said I didn't look at the website because I called to make a reservation (after the call I realized that it isn't even mentioned on the website unless you book the reservation online). She said she would charge my card regardless and I said she is not authorized to do so and that I would dispute the charge with my credit card company since 1) I was not informed of such a cancellation fee when I asked, 2) it's not on your website even after you stated it is and 3) I canceled with 90 days notice, more than the required 60 days notice. She got angry and said "I'm tired of your bitching - I don't need to listen to this." At that point I expressed that I was merely explaining to her that she can't charge me for something that was not communicated to me upfront when I explicitly asked on the phone her policy. She was yelling and said that I am never welcome at her Bed and Breakfast EVER and said she wouldn't charge me and then hung up the phone on me responding mid-sentence. I was shocked to have been treated so poorly and have someone yell at me on the phone when I was merely trying to express that I should not pay a penalty for something I wasn't even aware of, nor was there any confirmation email that stated a cancellation fee beyond the 60 days advance notice. I made sure to cancel right away when I knew so as not to be charged the full amount since I cancelled within 90 days. I decided to let it go and just move forward because maybe she was having a horrible day or something, until the fee showed up on my credit card a couple days later. I have never expreienced such rude customer service - especially for a bed and breakfast. I don't expect her to understand that my grandmother's graveside memorial service was changed, but I should not pay for something that was not even communicated to me from the beginning especially when the cancellation was well in advance. read more
