No fries. When I ordered my almost 3 year old a hot dog with ketchup and mustard it was so overly loaded with ketchup that he could not feed himself, and I had to hold the dog and feed him. Absolutely ridiculous. For 5 dogs and a large root beer, it was $17. The dogs were meh. The service was not worth the tip I had to give before service was completed. Smh. I won't do that again. Obviously, with a name like Monroe's Original Hot Dog Drive-In, Hot dogs are the specialty of the house, but I would also have to recommend their root beer. Where I grew up in New Jersey we had a small chain of drive-in restaurants called Stewart's and this place captures the same vibe. This place was just off the highway on our roadtrip back to Toronto from Alabama (for climbing). It just looked very local, and had this 80/90's diner vibe so I had to give it a try. Their staff was friendly, and the prices were very reasonable. I got their waffle fries with chilli and cheese, and their original hotdog (the one with chilli). THEIR CHILLI WAS AMAZING. It went really well with the fries and hotdog. It's a bit sweet, and it turned into this amazing sauce on both the dishes. I also loved how the hotdog bun was steamed. It made it even better. The only downside is that I didn't get more hotdogs. I was hoping to have a little snack but it just wasn't enough as I was craving more. I'd have to convince my friends to stop over here for food whenever we go down south. read more

Stopped in on a lonely Spring Sunday, lonely because there wasn't a car in the lot. The place looks vacant. Its a a bit eerie. Wasn't sure if they were in business or not. Theres a vacant Burger King across the street and an Econlodge. Several employees working and a nice lady took my order: a chili dog 'all the way' as they say it. Basically a coney with everything only it's not a coney as you might expect from Detroit. It's basically an Ekrich style hot dog with sloppy Joe sauce with mustard and onions, a throwback to 1950s carnival concessions. They wear these cute tshirts with pride: 'Monroes Original Hot Dog.' On my way back to Detroit, I stopped into the sleepy town of Monroe and tried 2 old fashioned drive in's that happen to make their own root beer. This was the 1st place I stopped, just to sample their root beer. It was served in a Styrofoam 20 oz cup with lid. The root beer was good and tasted like many other drive in root beers throughout the country. It was sweet, vanilla-flavored like an A&W, and served with no ice. Hands down, the best hot dogs in town. They get their hot dogs from the Dearborn Sausage Company in Roseville, MI and boy are they better than the hot dogs used at any other place in town, even A&W and Coney. Their homemade chili is also top notch. Some people don't care for it, but I don't know how. I can eat their chili by itself, it's that good. Also, I'm not much of a root beer drinker; in fact, I don't really like root beer at all. But the root beer here is amazing, possibly my favorite drink of all time. Some say it's homemade like their chili, but I don't know for sure if it really is. If you're looking for a cheap mean (I believe it's $1.60 per hot dog) you can't go wrong with Monroe's Original. It's a lot tastier than anything McDonald's or Checker's ever thought of.
