Chicago Dog + the Big Kahuna!
    Richard P.

Okay, so I've been to the Dog House approx. 10 times now, with and without my family en tow. Each time, I have to drive 45 minutes from Toledo, Ohio, just to savor these hot dogs....but man...it's worth it. So here's the low-down. The Dog House offers three varieties of hot dogs for each of their selections, each with options of three-meat options like pork, turkey or all-beef all the way to 1/2 pound black angus beef dogs. Other than that, the hot dogs used at this place are your typical, run-of-the-mill, ballpark type franks you can get in any grocery. One look at the kitchen and you'll quickly surmise that this place isn't much more complex than a typical hot dog hut at any Major League Ballpark. HOWEVER, the difference here are the options available. From Junkyard dogs to raspberry-nestled Monte Cristo Dogs, hunkering Mac & Cheese Dogs to the voracious PITBULL dog, classic Chicago Dogs with Neon Green Relish to Big Kaunas slathered in pineapple, cream cheese, bacon, and BBQ sauce. I even had an Elvis Dog here with peanut butter and bacon the last time I went. This place has rocking options and they have an extensive list of choices. It's merely fun to just go in and read them. ONE WARNING: (and this is a good warning). YOU CANNOT LEAVE TECUMSEH WITHOUT EATING the Dog House's CHEESY Potatoes. Forget everything else. Get the Cheesy. On several occasions, I have told the waitresses that I want to buy this restaurant and I have never really joked about it. I think this place would fit sooooo much better in a bigger city (no offense to Tecumseh), and I would love to take it there. If you are nearby, you have to stop and grab a few dogs. This is a GREAT roadtrip for those in nearby communities.

My favorite speciality dogs are the gutter dog with macaroni and cheese and bacon or the dog gone awesome dog

No fries, hot dogs are skinless and boiled not grilled. Nobody in Tecumseh or Adrian serves a decent hotdog

Fourteen dollars for 2 Chicago dogs, a bag of chips and a fountain drink! And I had to wait about 15 minutes for my food. Never again.

Hhhhhhomg, the sourdough. My favorite is the cheddar cheese curd sourdough. This is a real, longer…read moreferment sourdough with great stretch and delicious flavor and, most important of all, bothers my digestion less! We have driven up here from Ohio twice now, just for the bread! And even with all that, I managed to take zero pictures! It's a crime. This place deserves pictures. The breads, in particular, are gorgeous. We got sandwiches here once and they were both solid. We took them nextdoor to the park and had a delightful picnic. I tried to order the bacon cheddar grilled cheese, but they were out of bacon! I subbed turkey, asked for the mustard aioli (which it turned out was waaaaaay more mustard than aioli...maybe just straight mustard) on the side. I also asked them for a side of the fig spread they use on their brie sandwich and boy am I glad I did! It was great on this sandwich. The bread was their plain sourdough, which is predictably great. The Italian sandwich - this comes on the foccacia. This bites well, but it does not have any stretch to it. It's very soft, but also had a sort of grainy texture. It was a little messy from the Italian dressing, but otherwise it was a pretty decent cold cut sandwich. I might ask for it with a different bread in the future. Polish sausage pretzel dog - The polish sausage wasn't very flavorful, but it did the job. Would have liked more salt on the pretzel. Needed maybe a little longer in the oven, imo, but maybe that's so you can reheat at home without consequences. Took half of this one home to reheat and I can't say that went well, altho that's probably mostly on the toaster over we used, which was a hellbeast of inconsistent heatblasts. If you have more social machinery, ymmv on the reheating. Garlic cheese sticks - this is their light foccacia style bread, I think. It's pretty garlicky with a decent amount of cheese on it. We liked it but idk that we would get it again either. It was a decent little snack. We also got some coffees here, one iced mocha half sweet (it came possibly with whipped cream or cold foam on top, we couldn't tell which), and a Cafe Miel, hot. The mocha was solid, not too sweet, chocolatey & milky but the coffee taste still came thru. This would be way too sweet at full sweet, but half was great. The Miel was a nice blend of honey and cinnamon, but is also order that half sweet next time. It wasnt overwhelming, but I prefer my drinks less sweet. If that's you, too, also order everything half sweet here! They're very accommodating. Cakelettes in birthday cake and cookies & cream - I thought the cake on these were both really nice, great texture, moist. The chocolate one has a larger crumb and was more moist. The filling of the cookies & cream was outstanding. Basically crushed up oreos in whatever their buttercream is. The cake on this one was like a pie shell that they filled with icing, with an Oreo on top (which was soft from the refrigerated case). The birthday cake had more cake and less icing, more like a flat cupcake with icing on top. The flavor of the icing on that one was fine, but nothing special. My partner and I argued over whether the sprinkles made or ruined the experience, so just know that there are a decent amount of them on the edges of the icing and also lots baked into the cake itself and if you love em, great! If not...avoid. Staff recommendations were the Cherry Chip & Blueberry Lavender, but we tried neither on this trip. Funny enough, our favorite darn thing we've ever had here was a mistake item We came back here hoping to find them, but there were non, so we asked and learned the story of their Frankenstein birth! Apparently, when they make one of their regular menu items wrong, they have these leftover bits that they turn into Whoopie Pies. These are basically the cakelettes, but in a sandwich form. These hit me right in the childhood feels. A nostalgic flavor that sent me right back to my grandma's kitchen. Personally, I think they should be making this mistake full time and twice on Sundays. I would drive half an hour to relive my childhood flavor memories anytime.

I used to genuinely enjoy supporting this bakery, which makes this disappointing to write…read more After learning more about how the tip jars are handled, I no longer feel comfortable spending money there. Like most customers, I assumed the tips placed in those jars were going directly to the employees working behind the counter and making drinks during busy rushes. Finding out that employees reportedly do not directly receive those tips feels misleading and leaves a bad taste in my mouth. The staff always seem to work incredibly hard, especially during rushes, and customers tip because they want to support THEM. If tip money is being used differently, customers deserve transparency about that. For me personally, this -- combined with other experiences that made me feel unwelcome -- has changed how I view the business entirely. I'll be choosing to support other local businesses moving forward.

It's a little off the beaten path, so a hidden gem! Seems like they started selling baking supplies (which they still sell!) but now sell baked goodies. I stopped in on a Saturday morning and was surprised that there was a line and that they had sold out of a few things, but I still had: *Biscuit Breakfast Sandwich - Got this one for the hubby & he said it was good! *Sausage Egg and Cheese Bagel Bomb - DELISH. Wow, just perfectly seasoned and perfectly baked. There was not a soggy bit in sight even though I'd imagine something like this could get soggy really easily. It's basically like a robust stuffed bagel. They have three different types so I'll have to come back to try the other two. They had a good assortment of doughnuts but I didn't try any. Ambience here is no frills and you still feel like you're in the 70's/80's but it's kinda charming that way -- like the way it is when you walk into Benny's Bakery!

Same sentiment for their vegan chocolate chip cookies and other vegan baked goods. Sad that I don't live in Michigan purely because I'm not near Bakehouse 46. All their cake and frosting flavors are thoughtfully curated. Some of them that are not the standard ones are switched out every month, including one new vegan flavor. During the month I was there, it was lavender which I was skeptical of but it was actually delicious! They have cute mini sized versions of I think most of their cupcakes too, which is so great! I heard their banana pudding is amazing and is a best-seller. Can't believe even their ice creams are so delicious! The vibe inside sitting down is cute and perfect to enjoy a sweet treat or chill, like any other cafe. Even the customers who come in know their stuff is so good and I noticed the store draws in quite a "sweet" intersection of people. I think I actually witnessed the customer interaction right below this but imo I thought they were being kind of unfair and entitled, so this seems like an anomaly, because the desserts are truly wonderful as I saw other customers also found. The girl who worked the shift when I used to go in -- I had gotten her name but have forgotten it now -- was so sweet and good at her job! If you have allergies or restrictions, like gluten or dairy free, this bakery is very accommodating and a must-try; but even otherwise this bakery is worth going out of your way to try!
