Our first visit to the new Sylvania location. Well, new to us, they've been here on Alexis Road for about seven years. The last time we were in a Sylvania Tony P's was 30 years ago back on Monroe Street. Same great food as always and an added feature that I'm sure we'll take advantage of: a drive-thru. I can't comment on the crowd size because we arrived to an empty restaurant at 2:00pm on a Thursday. But it's a pretty good sized room with plenty of seating and it's spotless. We both had the #1 which is hot dog/drink and a side. Both got the dumplings which were fantastic. I got a second dog for two bucks, that way I was sure do over indulge and be too full to walk. lol This location also has a complimentary mini-pickle bar with sweet and original pickles. I hope T. Packo doesn't read this and discover my wife ate over a dozen sweet pickles. For what it's worth...we did buy a case of pickles. If you buy twelve, two of those are free! Just gets better and better! I personally like the Front Street location better, but, if we're on this side of town, we'll definitely stop in again. 06/25 read more

Disappointing visit tonight....approached a side door at about 800pm, it was locked, got in the car and gave the drive thru a try, it was open, ordered the Tony Packos hot dog and the American hot dog, asked if they had dill relish, told they did, asked for dill relish on the American, got to the window and asked the worker if the lobby closes this early all the time, he said the lobby was not closed but told me the door I tried is always locked ‍ got the food and parked in the parking lot and ate the food, the American was not hot and barely warm and the relish was nothing like dill relish so disappointed in my visit read more

I hadn't been to Tony Packo's in a long time but I'm in Toledo this weekend and wanted to introduce my boyfriend to it. This one was on the way home back to the Detroit area and it turns out it's more of a cafe/quickserve place, it even has a drive-thru. That being said, the food is still really good. We ordered the chicken paprika and the pierogies to split, as well as an order of their fried pickles. They actually have a pickle bar here which is fantastic, they have two different types of pickles that you can have with your meal. Surprisingly I liked the spicy hot pickles more than the original, they were super sour. I actually bought a can of their garlic pickles to go but unfortunately it's the sour pickles, just with garlic added. The chicken paprika wasn't my favorite but I really liked the little paprika dumplings that came with it. Both the pierogies and the fried pickles were excellent. This was about $30 here before a soft drink which wasn't too bad either. They have buns signed by famous celebrities all over the restaurant, I spotted Siegfried and Roy, Jim Harbaugh, and a few actors I know. Still not entirely sure how they preserve them for so long! Overall I would come back to the location but I do have fond memories of some of their sit-down locations. read more

Despite being a hot dog addict, I would have never heard of Tony Packo's if it weren't for the character of "Klinger" on the TV show "Mash" touting them frequently as a hometown favorite. So headed in that direction, I had to try them out. They have an interesting menu, in addition to their version of "coney island" hot dogs, they have a number of eastern European dishes which deserve a look some other time. I ordered the "Original" (a split sausage with mustand, onion, and meat sauce, and the "American" which i had with kraut and mustand. This is a fairly new outlet of the downtown Toledo installation, and it's immaculate, service is prompt and cheerful. I'd go again. read more

Sides are great! Cherry strudel is the best i have ever had! Stuffed cabbage is not like Mom taught me to make so not a fan. The seasonal meatloaf is better than expected. Some people love the perch, but most places near Lake Erie have that. Loving the new Sylvania location for Tony Packo's. Great use for a building that was empty for some years. Great location off the highway too. The food was just how I remembered it. I ordered the chicken paprikas, one original Packo's hot dog and a cherry strudel (I couldn't resist). All tasted exactly how I remembered them. The menu is still very reasonable (I got all that for under $15). Next time you're on Alexis check out the Tony Packo's Cafe West. I ordered online through the yelp app for pick-up, they have drive-thru open and you can go inside and order. Very fast and efficient service. I'll be back next time I'm in town. read more

Everyone loves Tony Packo's! I was bummed when The Andersons closed and we lost our TP location close to Sylvania. But this location on Alexis is great!! They have a drive-thru, which I love! And a nice interior (it is in an old fast food restaurant) that still has a gift shop, plenty of seating, and the food tastes just like at the original location. If you are as old as me you know the name Tony Packo from M*A*S*H. Klinger boasted about the great Hungarian hot dogs. So when we say the name from the side of the road we crossed three lanes (legally!) and took the exit. The coney dog with their chili and onions was really good. A thicker hot dog meat sauce than I am used to when I lived in Rhode Island (yum Rods Grille in Warren RI!) but still very good. The actual dog was cut in half and so good! Thick and juicy and a nice crunch to it. The bun was soft and tasty. We had their dumplings on the side in Paprikash or something. They were good too! A nice solid tasting sauce and fluffy dumplings. Emma was a very nice enthusiastic waitress. She brought us their famous pickles. Yum as well! We were traveling from Detroit after seeing a Mo Town legends show and heading home to Ky. Having been to a few Tony Packo's locations in the past, I was happy to find this place right off the route of a family road trip. Super convenient, ample parking, and an ultra clean dining room with cute decorative touches like the colored glass pendant lights and the displays of the signed buns. You order at the counter and then your food is brought to your table. My family got the fried pickles, chicken sandwich, chili cheese pierogis, the chili mac, and a Tony Packo's original. We also helped ourselves to some of the complimentary pickles - #teamsweethots Everything tasted exactly as I remembered it, and let's face it, the key to an institution such as TP's is consistency! I had never had the pierogi before and I wish they'd been a touch more "well done", but I will know to request that for next time. My tween was "not a fan" of the fried pickles, be aware that some of the peppers are also included, which is not everyone's cup of tea. I don't find myself passing through the greater Toledo area as much as I used to, but I would definitely make an effort to stop here for my chicken paprikas fix! read more

I hadn't been to Toledo in a number of years. I always loved Packos and wanted to stop in on this recent trip. What happened??? I went to the restaurant on Alexis and at the entrance door learned that it was 'drive-through only.' How about a sign as folks enter the parking lot? My hotdog was squished into a styrofoam hamburger box, the bun was cold (must have stopped warming the buns), the sausage small and they must have forgot to add onions and mustard. A tiny side order of paprikas dumplings that were actually ok but the portion was maybe 1/2 cup? The saddest part was the chili - which used to be thick and loaded. It was watery, greasy, and they must have just scooped what was floating on top of the kettle. By the time I opened the container, the grease was already congealed on the lid of the container. I tasted it and spit it out. The picture tells the story. This is no longer a place I want to bring-up when talking about Toledo. read more

It was my second time at tony Packo's but the first time at this newer location. We had walked by earlier in the day and knew we had to check it out. I shared the chicken paprikas with my fiancée and a side of the Mac and cheese. Some of the best Mac and cheese of my life! We also got fried pickles for the table. I will say that the staff was exceptional nice, accommodating and patient while we spent some time figuring out what we wanted to order. I was very impressed with the staff and they made it feel like it wasn't a fast casual restaurant. A Tony Packo's Cafe?! I have been away from Toledo for far too long! I was thrilled on my most recent visit back home to discover that the old Boston Market on Alexis had been converted into a trendy Tony Packo's Cafe. And three different ways to order?! (Drive thru, sit down, or take out counter) Very cool! We grabbed a quick dinner here - sit down - and the food was just as delicious as the original downtown location. You gotta love the stuffed cabbage dinner!! Just the right amount of spice and the pickles are a dill that have a real hotness to them. I also got the side hotdog, although I doubt I'll eat that during my dinner. It'll be taken "to go". A large selection of beverages, including brewed iced tea. Ambiance is nice and cozy. Not too busy at 4pm on a Friday. They do serve beers-- 4 on draught and a bunch in bottles There is also the requisite gift shop with T-shirts, sweatshirts and food products. Hot pepper fills, anyone. The gifts are reasonably priced for how well known this establishment is. I highly recommend the stuffed cabbage. It was fabulous read more

Went to the new place, very nice. Set up like a fast food place, but still has servers. Food quality is just as good. Even ordering the fried pickles, my order was filled quickly. They even have a little pickle bar now too. Definitely like the new place with outside seating. Didn't see the Chicken sandwich on the menu, hope they still have it, my kids favorite. read more

I certainly did not expect the same atmosphere as the original ...BUT the food was served almost cold, the taste a cheap imitation, the service poor, and portions not up to par. It hurts to say this but what a major disappointment. Being a Buckeye and reading about the lore of Tony Packo's for a couple decades, and finally landing in Toledo, I had to give TP's a try. I was hoping for something special. The Good: it is inexpensive and it is served quickly. For starters: you order from the counter just like a fast food joint; the menu is very limited as others have noted (which wouldn't be a problem if the food was great); and you take your cafeteria tray with food over to your table, whereupon an employee will check on you. I ordered their two most popular dishes, and boy were they disappointing. My colleague felt likewise about his food. I ordered the chili hot dog and the Hungarian paprika chicken and noodles. The hot dog was incredibly bad: exactly one-half of a hot dog (what?!) cut in half along its length and served on a bun; punished so long on the grill that it crunches with each bite; and a chili concoction on top that I can only say would be an acquired taste, but not by me. I have eaten chili from Texas, Cincinnati, and points between. This stuff just didn't do it for me, and it had an off-taste/odd flavor. Having returned from a Chicago trip just 2 weeks prior to this review and eaten a loaded Chicago dog each at Superdawg (voted most iconic restaurant in Illinois), and Portillo's (another truly great Chicagoland chain of hot dog emporiums), I'll just stop and say someone should report them to the local SPCA for more humane treatment of dogs. The Hungarian noodle dish (spätzle to be sure) in paprika was also quite bland. I could not taste any paprika, even though it was orange-ish in color. The unseasoned piece of baked or boiled white chicken on top was literally, completely tasteless. Unfortunately, this is not worth a side trip. read more

First time sitting down here. Great fries. I got the dogs with chili and cheese. Yum!!! A dash of hot Hungarian paprika set off the flavors.

Get stuffed! Seriously. Best stuffed cabbage ever! I've been told that Tony Packo's is an institution in Toledo and rightly so. Pictures of Jamie Farr on the storefront, a gift shop selling t-shirts and signature items in jars (their pickles are so good), and a wall lined with celebrity autographed hot dog buns makes me think that I'm not the first to discover the wonder of this place. I mean, if George Carlin likes it, why shouldn't I? We walked up to the counter and ordered too much food - 2 of their signature Hungarian hot dogs, chicken paprikash served with dumplings, stuffed cabbage, fried pickles, an apple dumpling, and cherry strudel. Someone actually brought me a to-go container and dropped it off at the table (thank you, but I don't think they've encountered my monster appetite before). The Tony Packo's Original Hot Dog: This is essentially a chili dog, but the chili is all meat and so delicious and served over a Hungarian sausage with onions on a soft bun. These wieners go down so easy. I could easily eat 4 or 5 of these. Chicken Paprikash: I'm not exactly sure what this is. I had it at a wedding once and really liked it. The chicken breast comes served with a savory orange cream sauce (I assume this has lots of paprika in it?) over spaetzle-like dumplings. Stuffed Cabbage: My favorite stuffed cabbage ever, and I really like stuffed cabbage. First of all, it was enormous and had a yummy ground beef and rice filling. But the sauce it came with?! Think borscht in sauce form, with extra cabbage pieces on your plate. Incredible. Cherry strudel: Not to sweet, slightly tart cherry filling surrounded by a crisp, flaky crust. Perfect! The apple dumpling is good for those that enjoy the apple cinnamon baked dessert and the fried pickles were good (but I'm not such a big fan of these in general). So yes, this place complete blew my mind. It was cheap (around $30 for an extremely gluttonous meal), fast (the food is all premade and we got it within a matter of minutes), and unique (why can't Chicago have a place that does hot dogs AND stuffed cabbage?). Needless to say, we had no food leftover and I contemplated getting a hot dog for the road even though I was slipping into a coma. Now I am a happy little fatty, knowing that whenever I come to visit my in-laws, I can come stuff my face with stuffed cabbage every time (and believe me, I will). UPDATE: Dinner is sit down with waiter service. The food comes out just as fast and you can get awesome combos such as the stuffed cabbage combo #3: stuffed cabbage, a side (GET THE DUMPLINGS!) and a hot dog. Perfect! read more

Definitely nothing fancy, the décor dates back to the 1980s, and none of that matters at all. The food is great! It's ethnic European in many cases, but that again does not matter at all. The Hungarian Hot Dogs are the best chili dogs in the world, the dumplings with Paprika gravy are great and everything related to pickles and peppers is even better. Go!!! read more

I had a craving! My mouth started watering. I got the shakes..... I was watching an old M*A*S*H episode when Klinger mentioned Tony Packo's. I almost missed it. I was working in Dundee, MI and I knew this was as close as I could get to a Packo's dog. I drove the fifteen miles to the border and got off at the first exit. Living in Detroit I love the Detroit coneys. But I have a special place in my heart and stomach for these Hungarian delicacies. Variety is the spice of life and the Packos chili is definitely a little spicier than Detroit chili. Throw in some fried pickles which are a little different if you've never tried them. They also have some great soups. If you don't get enough food while you're there you can take some home with you in the store. Note to self: Next time here, try the stuffed cabbage. On my last visit home, my brother was on a kick to visit all the famous local establishments. Tony Packo's is high on that list. Here's a bit of history for you: Tony Packo was a Toledo-native Hungarian who was the first to introduce the Hungarian dog to the region. His restaurant gained further recognition in the show M*A*S*H when Jamie Farr mentioned it in a handful of episodes. The local chain of restaurants is still run by the Packo family and all of the locations are jammed pack with Toledo history and memorabilia. As for the food, the dogs are the only obvious thing to get on the menu. Everything else tastes like fast-food Hungarian. Yummy but definitely not gourmet. Their chili is decent and I occasionally have the stuffed cabbage or chicken parikas. For dessert, get the apple strudel. read more

YUMMY! YUMMY! YUMMY! I was completely overwhelmed with three choices! I want to try everything on the menu! I went with the Packo's Platter: stuffed cabbage, chili, chili dog... and I swapped out the chili for Mac and cheese.. along with taste tested my friends chicken chili, fried pickles, French fries & cucumber salad... Everything was great, the food was the bomb, the service was great and the prices was fair! No one's feeling were hurt when we got the bill! Overall, very very satisfied with everything! I am not a MASH fan, but my husband is and saw that there was a true Tony Packos. He suggested that we try it on our way home from Michigan. I thought it was interesting it was Hungarian because most of the food reminded me of German faire. The food was good. The "hot dogs" or as I call it Kielbasa was cooked well. First of all, I rarely eat pork and called ahead to see if all beef hot dogs were an option. The girl who answered the phone said, " yes". So we go there, and low and behold that is not the case. Ok, we will make an exception since this apparently the place to go to. Our waitress was pleasant enough, not fake, and got our order correct. I would rate the fried pickles a 5, but I'd enjoy a Costco hot dog better any day. Soup was alright, dumplings...I'd rather have Cracker Barrel. Just after being in the lively original location with the dixieland band, this was just another place. Caggabe rolls are always great, and the fried Pickles on the spot as well. I approached this visit with high expectations, based on all the feedback I'd gotten from locals (Ex: "Famous people go here!, etc). Upon entering the establishment, I looked to my right and immediately laid my eyes upon a signed hot dog bun by Kenny G, NOT A GOOD START. Anyhow, sat down and was greeted by a very friendly waitress, who throughout the visit attended to us very regularly. It was much appreciated and met my expectations. On to the food....I ordered a #2 combo, which is two hot dogs, chili, and a side (I ordered the dumplings with gravy). Chili arrived and was good enough, nothing incredible, but was adequate spiciness. The hot dogs arrived, first one was good, but somewhat dry. The second one was waterlogged / tasted like nothing and actually made my stomach turn a little bit...not a good experience. It was pretty much a mass of food that was devoid of taste. Dumplings were tasteless, so I had to add a significant amount of salt and pepper to taste. Would potentially try this again, but wouldn't go out of my way. I think this establishment is famous more for being a local/historical place, as opposed to the very mediocre food. If you want an authentic experience, head to a place elsewhere in Toledo, or even Chicago. In summary: Sub-par food, good service, ambience was okay, possibly worth a visit to the main site in Toledo. read more

I went into Tony Packo's with pretty high expectations...everyone says, "When your in Toledo, you have to go to Packo's!"...So, in we went to the West side Cafe. The decor was much like a Max and Erma's, except for the signature hot dog buns. The menu was very diverse. It was like a Hungarian Coney Island...a little of this, a little of that...some strange combos, etc. The server was really nice and friendly and despite having a few tables, did not seem rushed with us. We ordered deep fried pickles for appetizer. I have had these once before at a bar and they were deep-fried pickle spears. Not these - deep fried pickle chips. The problem with deep frying pickle chips is that all of the pickle juice gets boiling hot and puddles in this little round, fried wonder. We both burned the crap out of our lips and faces. NOT fun. For the entrees, we both ordered the hot dog/chili mac combination with a side of cucumbers in sour cream. The hot dog came with everything on it and didn't really disappoint, although the other side of the sausage would have been welcome (they cut the sausage down the middle for the hot dogs and you end up with a lot of bread). The Chili Mac was not salted AT ALL and therefore, really, really bland. We ended up taking almost all of it home, where I added a little salt and Cumin (much better). The cucumbers in sour cream is a polish staple and the polish do it better. Add a little dill and a little salt and it would be really good. Overall, the food was bland and the hot dog was skimpy. It will probably be a long time before we try Tony Packo's again. read more

My wife and I have heard many good things about this place and decided to give it a try. We tried the paprikas as well as the stuffed cabbage rolls and sausage, and the roast beef. All food items were served promptly and were good. We had just enough room to try dessert and we both agreed that the strudel was better than the apple dumpling. Next time we will agree to share a dessert as we wound up leaving some of this sweet stuff behind and could not finish it all. read more
