Many years ago I received a Montblanc Meisterstruk fountain pen as a gift. As a work of art it's exquisite with perfect balance in your hand and a smooth stroke that can't be duplicated by any run-of-the mill mortal instrument. As for reliability, it's as fussy as a vintage Ferrari and always seems to let me down when I'm signing endless opening night autographs or penning the founding parchments for some emerging Republic. I just hate that. Besides, this quill quaffs ink. Which brings me to the Montblanc flagship store on Madison Avenue which seems to receive little love from the Yelpian mob. I'm not looking for a new best friend, a date for the prom or torrents of obsequious flattery. I'm here for ink. So, their imperiousness actually works for me allowing me to get in and out with a minimum of chit chat or small talk, just a straight transaction and I'm back on the street. It's obvious that they don't have many Black customers here and that they're not comfortable working with us at all. It's was "nicely" embarrassing when one of the salespersons told a co-worker that I was next in line and than made eye contact with the other folks waiting in a slick "you know what this is" way. I own a couple of their pens and I've bought ink online in the past, just went in this time as I was in the area. I will be selling these pens shortly, their don't deserve my "black" dollars for future ink or supplies. read more

The reviews for this location aren't that great. So I would be lying if I said I wasn't concerned about having to ask someone to take my money. Luckily, I walked in and was helped immediately. The store was decently full for a late Monday morning. It didn't take long until I was able to pick up the gift I was looking for and be out the door. Both sales associates that helped me made me feel extremely welcome and they were both very kind. It was nice to have one person wrapping the gift and the other ringing me up. They even asked me which side of the gift wrap (champagne or black) as the ribbon they currently use is black satin. I'll have to come back here and pick myself up a pen for my next big milestone. Hopefully, that's soon! And no, I wasn't dressed for the black tie wedding that I attended the other day. I was wearing a pullover sweatshirt with jean shorts and sneakers. Set in the nave of New York's fru-fru shopping district, the Montblanc boutique offers the kind of white-glove luxury pen experience that one would expect from this lofty brand. I shopped there twice on this trip, and both times I was catered to like royalty. A few people came in and simply wanted to browse, and the staff seemed pleasantly accommodating of the tire kickers too. Well, it's all in the detail isn't it. Especially when it comes to the level of service you should expect from Montblanc based on their name, right? So here you go: On July 18, 2017, I purchased a "converter" for my Meisterstück Classique ballpoint pen. Two weeks later, I returned the item for a refund. On August 14, I sent an email inquiry about the status of the returned item. The next day, I received a response from them saying they had not received the returned item. I assumed that somehow the package was lost in the mail. Then, on October 24, I received an email from Montblanc telling me they were issuing a refund on the returned item. It took two months for them to get their act together and issue a refund? You would think! But of course, here it is November 8 and guess what, still no refund! I have emailed them again to find out the status, after having received a letter in the mail from them that made it look like they issued the refund. They have not. So, buyer beware! Montblanc doesn't seem to have their act together and that is such a disappointment. I love my pen, but them? Not so much. read more

I have had the same Meisterstuck 149 for over 15 years now. It is the pen with which treaties are signed and Great Books are written. It is heavy, and serious, and writes in bold, thick lines. Montblanc started in the early 1900s and rolled along quite nicely until the two World Wars; hanging on by a thread (I think Pelikan and Lamy are the only other two survivors from pre-war days), it gradually reclaimed its place at the peak of the pen industry. The numerals "4810" on the nib is the height - in metres - of the eponymous Mt. Blanc, and the white thingy on the top is supposed to represent the snow cap on top of the same mountain. The reason I write this is because I recently had my Meisterstuck repaired at the Madison Ave. shop, and once again the service struck me as absolutely perfect. The salesman with whom I dealt recognized that this wasn't just a pen, it was a part of my life; it has been with me everywhere; it has written love letters and angry tirades to the editor; it has sent thousands of guests on their merry ways from my desk; it has been a constant in a world of change. When I see people - like these salespeople - who appreciate that the signature (no pun intended) product with which they have chosen to associate themselves is an exquisite and personal object in the lives of its owners, I have to applaud. read more

I love Montblanc. It is one of my favorite brands, ever. I own a watch, wallet and many other things from them. So far I've always dealt with them online via their website and never had an issue. But I wanted to try their physical store this time to find ideas for a gift, and this didn't go as expected, at all. They didn't have the bracelet size I wanted, which is fine and happens all the time in any shop, so they confirmed they had it in their warehouse and that I would receive it "well ahead of time" of the deadline by which I needed to actually gift this, likely in a week they said. Fine by me, I had 2 weeks deadline so they assured me I would get it well ahead of time. A week went by and I heard absolutely squats. I called during the weekend and they said they were still waiting and that I should hear something by Monday. Monday come and goes, still nothing. I call and they say now to wait Tuesday. Tuesday comes, guess what? Still nothing. Now I have to wait Wednesday. Wednesday comes and still the same. Now it's wait until Wednesday afternoon. I'm sure you can guess where this is going... So basically the company strung me along for 2 weeks, citing issues with the warehouse and that they were unable to contact anyone and they had no idea if and when it would come or who to contact. Like really, does nobody have a phone at Montblanc warehouses? I find it hard to believe, and if it is the case then there is some serious incompetence going on at Montblanc supply chain management. Ultimately I am not getting the gift I chose more than 2 weeks ago for my significant other. This experience has actually soured the whole brand for me, and I likely won't be shopping at Montblanc anymore after this, after more than 10 years of being a loyal customer. Step up your supply chain game, Montblanc. This kind of problem, which in itself is already bad, is compounded by the fact that I kept being left in the dark and I had to call you like 10 times over the span of a few days to realize you won't even have it by the date I needed! There is nothing but class in this boutique and the staff is extremely helpful. Fine watches, briefcases, jewelry, belts, accessories galore. Oh yes and of course, the writing instruments...They even carry engagement rings now - diamond is quite small, but great quality. I've had the Starwalker black rubber and platinum writing instrument for about 4 years now and I love it. Slightly on the heavy side since its a men's but the women's collection of writing instruments are too short for my hand. Approximately $20 for the refill of the fineliner - totally worth it. I work in the building directly across the street and I visit this boutique often. Expect to at least spend $400 and up on a stylish pen. Serious collectors normally spend $30K or more on one (one of a kind, diamonds etc..) - depending on what they are featuring. Montblanc definitely lives up to its name when it comes to luxury, quality and customer service. Of course, all of that doesn't come cheap.. read more

I needed a repair to my Meisterstuck ballpoint pen and I wasn't sure if this could be performed in store or not. The Manager Christian Saccal personally helped me and he was fantastic to say the very least. He was able to fix my pen and for no charge. We started talking about our love for the brand and he was kind enough to allow me to visit their new back lounge area to view their products. He offered me an espresso coffee and time to enjoy the store and their awesome products. These folks get customer service and I highly recommend visiting their new store. I purchased a very nice pen here yesterday (8/7) for a birthday gift for my fiance. If anyone is planning to go and make a purchase, REMEMBER TO LOOK FOR KRISTIN. Nobody else. Everyone else is just not even worth dealing with. Kristin was great, she's such a class act, very kind and helpful. As for ALL other employees, I would recommend some major training courses as management strategy. They have no interest or any concern for customers just waiting around for help. Blanca.....now, she's an exceptional case. She made me come very close to the point of just walking out, until thankfully, Kristin showed up to save the day. Blanca's offensive attitude and incompetency to explain anything about the product was astonishing. In addition, she refused to listen nor respect my small requests regarding the purchase. For example, picking out the specific pen I would like, checking out how the box looks, how it will be wrapped.....Her responses were just absolutely disrespectful and offensive. Deciding to make a special birthday gift purchase like this should be a pleasant experience in general, and Blanca definitely ruined part of that. Just complete difference in level of conduct between employees. Compared to most other high end boutiques in Manhattan, just inconsistent. I felt with Matthew Jones, he was great. So I walk in just to look around because ever since I bought a montblanc card holder it seems silly not to have a pen. Originally I figured I'd go with one of the cheaper pens, the Cruz line runs about 250. However the meisterstruck line really caught my eye. Even out of the store, in my apartments unflattering light, it looks amazing. With the stores lighting, it looked crazy. I was surprised Matthew took me so seriously. I've been loosing a bit of weight so my shirts and suits look baggy and ill fitting. He was super knowledgeable, I don't remember what the three rings stand for but he told me. So then I act like a tool bag for maybe 20 minutes trying to decide between the classic and the LA grand. He was patient, and recommended the larger pen, which really fits better in my hand. He tried to upsell me and closed hard a couple times, but not in an obnoxious way like they do at a number of other places in the area. If you have around $500 bucks in your pocket, this store is for you. If you don't, this store isn't for you. read more

I will never buy anything from MB after my experience at this store. I was at this store the other day to buy a watch for my father. I found a watch that I liked, but I did not like the price, and they barely offered any discount. I own a few luxury watches myself, and it is asinine to buy them at the tag price, so I wanted to check out other MB authorized dealers. When I told the employee (Asian guy) that I wanted to think it over and come back later, he started getting mad at me. He said, and I quote "It is not right. You said you like this watch, so I asked the manager for discount. This is the best I could do. You wasted my time." And he kept repeating that as I walked out. WTF! Seriously? As a consumer, I reserve the right to not purchase a product if I am not happy with the price. Just because I spent 5 minutes with the sales rep does not mean I have to purchase from him. If he does not understand that basic concept, he should not work in sales. Period. That was a major turn off, and I was glad I did not buy from that guy. There are so many luxury watch brands in NYC that I can choose from, and I refuse to give them my $ to stores that hire rude sales staff like him. That Asian male employee just costed MB 5k and more, since I will never buy anything from MB in the future. I purchased a Mont Blanc watch for over 10k and after 3 months it broke. I then sent it to be repaired and was told it was not a warranty item and would cost$1600.00 to repair. The piston on my Montblanc broke after about 18 months of occasional use, and since the pen is still under the manufacturer's (rather stingy) 2 year warranty, I took it in to the Madison Ave. boutique to get it fixed. Christian Saccal, the manager, tried to argue that this was most likely my fault because MB's are almost never defective, and told me the repair would cost $175! Very unfortunate that MB seems to have a presumption not to honor their warranty. It's sad to see a once-great brand marred by poor workmanship and even worse customer service. The employees here are superbly unethical and I would give them 0 stars if possible. I live in Seattle and I recently received both a phone call (to my personal cell phone) and an email (to my work address) about a watch repair. I've never been to this store, much less drop off a watch for repair. Long story short: someone stole and is using my identity in NYC. My problem with this store, and in particular Jimmy Kwok and his manager Jennifer Grippa, is that they are completely ignoring my requests for any information regarding the person using my identify. I will soon report them to the authorities for aiding and abetting identity theft. I suggest you take your business to a place that understands basic ethics. read more

I figured when I purchased a pen from Mont Blanc that it wouldn't break 3 months later. I've never had a $1 pen break and so I figured that wouldn't happen. They put me off in the store. They said I need a specific booklet with warranty information. I said I could get the information no problem, but they said they need the original not an email. They were actually rude. I asked another gentleman and he said, I'm working on putting in this order. He was terrible too. They basically said, we would just have to ship it to Texas anyway, so you could just try on your own. No help. The pen broke from twisting to firmly during recapping. Never again. Classy place. Came over because I wanted to get my pen engraved and because my newly purchased rollerball pen (bought in Germany) wasn't writing anymore. I was not happy because the ink dried out (cap was always on) after a few uses. The sales lady - shortish and curvy - was quick to serve me but wasn't very friendly (didn't smile) nor particularly helpful. I was made to buy a new set of refills for $21. Wasn't happy but wasn't upset enough to ask to speak and negotiate with the manager. Decided to stay and wait for the wife to show her a matching white pen. The service from other assistants were good. I was then referred back to her to get the pen engraved. She was still unfriendly but I have to give it to her for working fast and efficient. I am convinced that Madison Ave store actually sold me a defective Montblanc Meisterstuck fountain pen. As per Montblanc's request I sent my brand new pen to their service center in USA. Even after the repair, the fountain pen is not smooth and does not write properly. I paid $800+ dollars for a piece of junk. Let me first start by saying that you should not go into this store unless you are prepared to drop some serious cash. Montblanc is without question one of the most renowned luxury boutiques. Upon entry anyone could take a quick glance around the sales floor and get the primary message, MAJOR CREDIT CARDS ONLY! There is nothing but class in this boutique and of course there is a price for it. However said that you can't buy class has never seen the inventory at the Madison Avenue location. The Starwalker, a collectors' pen with platinum cover was purchased for what I would consider a much deserved graduation gift wrapped up for $497.00+tax. To be honest that was probably among the less expensive items in this boutique. This pen is of the caliber that an employer would give to you after closing a major deal or securing an executive promotion. Until that time comes I will be using it to sign checks, bills, and other documents. If you're in the store long enough you will find that Montblanc has more to offer besides its great pen collection, the staff is extremely helpful with assisting client purchase in fine watches, briefcases, jewelry, cuff links, one of a kind diamonds, belts, and accessories galore! Though a standard purchase here may break your pockets a bit, their items are made to last and make great air looms. One day I hope to pass down my pen to one of my children when they graduate college. read more

Very disappointing service experience after speaking to the service center and New York store to polish my sterling jewelry diamond earrings and classic star chain which were given to me as parting corporate gifts. Polishing and cleaning fee was $175 per ítem after being told it was free like at Tiffany. Make no mistake - this is NOT Tiffany and took 3 weeks to even obtain the quote of $175 to clean each item so that was not complimentary. High end luxury retailer that really does not offer good customer service AFTER the purchase is made. Would not recommend their products or Star sterling jewelry line to anyone and they have $prices$ like Tiffany and Cartier but make no mistake, they are NOT high end in servicing their products and conflicting customer support. Extremely bad and very disapointed! No help with the products after purchase and you are on your own!!!! Service is den in Texas and the co tact with the NYC office is nonexistent. The telephone rep Sarah, who even emailed me a free estimate, was at odds with the quotes from the Texas repair center. I own several Mont Blanc writing instruments, a complete tuxedo set of studs and and links, other cuff links and belts. These are some of the best accessories I have and get great compliments on them. My wife and I visited the mid town shop, today, and were warmly greeted at the door and received wonderful service from Kristen. I had a 15 year old roller-ball pen with a loose top that was repaired on-site, immediately. Had been waiting for nearly a year for my next trip to NYC to do this and was well worth the trip. This is a very classy establishment and even if you do not see all of their products on display, just ask. read more
