I came here here a few years ago to treat my mom on Mother's Day, to avoid making reservations and receiving sub-par service. It worked. We enjoyed our meal, the service and said to each other that we needed to return. We did. I did. And it's GREAT. In classic Mexican restaurant fashion, the food comes out very fast and very hot and I don't care how. Rice, beans, cheese, tortillas and sauteed peppers and onions are all over the menu and in different forms. The menu is HUGE and the prices are very very reasonable. This last time, we got the enchiladas casas (or something like that) and coyote something or another. Basically, both dishes are enchiladas topped with pork. I have to tell you something: I don't like enchiladas. At all. I don't do corn tortillas and the red sauce is definitely not my favorite because it's usually too acidic and does not match with the enchilada fillings. All of my doubts about enchiladas were erased this day. The sauce is deep and rich, the cheese plentiful and the pork juicy and flavorful. The complimentary chips are warm, the salsa is chilled and the furniture is bright and festive. I think I really have a deep affinity for this little restaurant! Monte De Rey is now my Mexican restaurant of choice. I'll return here again and again without question. read more

We were told about this restaurant by some non-Yelp friends who said it was really good. This area is not a go to location but based on what we were told we thought it would be better. It was a colorful place, like many in the area and while the service was attentive the food was just okay. My wife and I decided a beer would the thing to drink and we order large beers....turns out this large beer was a LARGE BEER! Like 32 oz....lol, we both stared at the gigantic mugs and laughed. The issue is the food just was mediocre on flavor and content. My combo of a beef taco in a hard shell was cracked all the way on the back, but I was able to eat it, just no flavor. Colorful Mexican restaurant in Walkertown area. Service was excellent and the place had strong colors and beautiful hanging plants. The food though...your usual for this area. Nothing special to come back to. My beer was super cold and that was a plus. Rice and beans were very good. My beef tamale seemed to be one note flavor as well as the beef enchilada. Their table salsa was watery. We had to ask for their hot sauce to add flavor. It was a good red hot sauce that had a decent slow burn to it. We used to enjoy going to this restaurant but in the past several months we feel that it has gone downhill. Both of our meals were served cold. The rice and beans did not seem fresh (or look it). There was a long black hair in my chicken chimichanga dish,. When I spoke to my server he laughed and rolled his eyes. I walked over to the manager who acted concerned and asked the kitchen to give us a new plate of food. The second plate was also cold and the rice and beans still seemed like they had been prepared at least one day before. The food was not attractively plated. The restaurant itself is cute but our meals were disappointing and not tasty.Additionally I mentioned that we could not eat dairy foods but my black beans arrived with cheese all over the top of it. I feel that the meals should have been comped but the management did not even offer us that option. We will not be back. read more

This is a beautiful restaurant. The paintings hanging throughout the restaurant were exquisite! Our server was the perfect amount of nice and attentive. The chips and salsa were very tasty. Our food arrived very quickly. My sister had the beef chimichanga. I had the chiles poblanos with rice and beans. Both were delicious and large portions. We had leftovers to take home for later. Always my go to for true flavorful Mexican food. I have never had to find my waiter they are always on point. The portions are huge I most of the time have some leftover. The only thing I tried from here that I didn't care for was the pork street tacos and it's only because I prefer my pork cubed not shredded. The restaurant- located in a seedy Walkertown strip mall, BUT ownership has gone beyond the required to "class it up." Furniture is Gorg and hand painted/imported from Mexico! Trust me, you will want a picture of dining tables! The staff- we are strong endorses of Tony, Oswaldo as well as owner Fransisco. We feel welcomed as well as valued. The food- wow! Everything from your basic gringo hamburger and fries to authentic Mexican Platillos Mexicanos. I have had the Monte Nachos Rey (grade a) Burrito California (a+) and fajitas nachos (a) Great location, amazing food and superb staff. Check them out. WOW! I think the only bad thing I can say about this place, is the fact that I am very embarrassed that I am just coming here, and it's been in my backyard the entire time! Monte de Rey is located in the Walkertown Plaza beside Dollar Tree. When it first got built, I assumed it was like another El Maguey, and just wanted to give them some competition within our small town. Boy, do they ever give them a run for their money! I went here for lunch today, and just chose to try this place out! I have NO regrets whatsoever! They place is really nice inside and all the wooden furniture is covered with what seems like Hispanic portraits of their country and landscape which are in so many vibrant colors, that it makes you fill like you walked into a rainbow! The service was spot on, as before I could blink I had chips and salsa at my table and was asked my drink order. I got pink lemonade and asked for some white cheese sauce for my chips as I went through the menu trying to think of what in the world I wanted to order! I went with the combination #25 which consisted of an enchilada, and burrito, beans and rice. I also got to hard beef tacos win cheese and lettuce. Yes I was VERY hungry lol. The tacos were really good! They were huge too! And the ingredients were fresh as you could tell! I ate those first, and then migrated my way through toward my combination platter. Both the enchilada and burrito were chicken and the chicken was really seasoned with flavor! There were. It's drenched in tamale sauce, and cheese. It didn't take long for them to be gone! The beans and rice were both standard and help out the icing on the cake to me being full! To top it off, and to my surprise, I got this cinnamon sprinkled chip that was topped with whipped cream and strawberry sauce. It was really good! Not too heavy to weigh you down, but not too light either to the point that it has you craving more lol. I am not sure if you can get it as a full dessert but I will ask next time! I have tried several other Mecxican restaurants in the area--including three other Monte de Rey. Four times over two years this is way and out the best for both food and atmosphere. The atmosphere alone is worth the trip. The service and food are steller. Servings very generous. For Fathrs day we had Chicken Fajitas for two--$20.00 and way more than two of us could eat. I have eatern there four times over four yearss and it has been very consistant. The atmosphere and service enhance the tasty food. read more

Was in this area to meet a friends and decided to stop in. Decor is kitschy and fitting but after a small wait to be seated I was shivering waiting to order. Flies and gnats were flying all around and trying to land in the food. The chicken itself was very bland and between fighting the flies and gnats and cold .. I gave up and packed it to go to try to add more flavor at home. It was like picnicking outside in winter. I will not be returning. read more

And with its hand painted Mexican furniture, warm inviting tortillas, delicious burritos and smiling servers, it's is hard for me not to love Monte de Rey! I have been in Walkertown for 6 days now (I'm visiting my Dad from Miami) and have been to Monte de Rey twice! So why is this place so delicioso? Here's why... 1.) Chips and cheese dip! I wanted something spicy and my wonderful waiter made ma a cheese dip with jalapenos! It was AMAZING! Chips and salsa (not a big fan of the salsa) are complimentary with your meal (obviously the queso dip isn't) but it's a nice way to start off your Mexican fiesta in your tummy! 2.) Burritos, burritos,burritos! A good burrito means different things to different people. Some want a feast bigger than their forearms. Others want to load up as many sauces, guacs, and creams as possible. But no matter your personal burrito philosophy, there's no denying the that the steak California burrito won't tantalize your taste buds!! Juicy steak, caramelized onions and peppers, rice, beans smothered in a light white cheese dip topped with pico de gallo and three slices of fresh avocado! Not only is it an climax in your mouth, but it is gigante and definitely big enough to share even with the hungriest husband. 3.) Any cheese and meat lovers in the house? La Monterrey is the plate for you! Perfectly cooked steak, sweet onions smothered in a cheese sauce (can you tell I love cheese? :-) served with homemade flour tortillas. Fill and fold tortillas and enjoy the savory mixture! 4.) Cinnamon covered Sopapillas topped with whip cream and a cheery sauce is served complimentary for dessert - if your stomach has room that is:-) Trust me when I say that I have been around the block and tried all kinds of Mexican joints all over the US and in Mexico... It may not come to mind when you first start thinking about where to have dinner but if you want a nice place where you can take your family without needing to take out a loan, bring them to Monte Dr Rey. It's also a great place to take a date (as long as you ask to be seated away from the family with all the kids LOL!) They start you off with a free basket of fresh tortillo chips and their homemade salsa, but I recommend the cheese dip as well. They have all the traditional Mexican dishes, tacos, burritos, fajitas, enchiladas, tamales, etc., which you can order per entrée or as a meal with rice and beans. The Fajitas Across the Border are very good but you'll need extra tortillas because you get a lot of the beef, chicken, and shrimp, onions, and peppers. I myself always get the Arros con Pollo, chicken and rice meal. It's always so good and they give you enough for two meals. If after stuffing yourselves there's a little room left for something sweet, I highly recommend the fried ice cream. The churros are also crispy and light, perfect! read more

These were accompanied by diced onion, cilantro, lime and salsa roja as well as a side of rice and beans. The service was great. My friend got the burrito california which was HUGE. Monte de Rey, Walkertown, located in the Centre Stage shopping center beside Roses. Rated as the highest Mexican food around, I knew I had to try this place out. Plenty of parking out front as it is part of a shopping center. Actually getting into this place is a little awkward. There is a outdoor seating area that is fenced off with this huge fence system, and the actual entrance looks like a black hole. The lay out inside also is a little crazy. It is just hard to get in and out of, and move around in. There is a lot of room inside, but there are also a lot of tables crammed into the place. Service was good, but checkout was time consuming. The menu is large with lots of choices. The food. I had the chili Colorado. It came out hot and fresh. It was indeed very good. Nice pieces of steak and the sauce had some spicy bite without being over the top. Authentic taste. The salsa was not very good. It looked and tasted like plain tomato paste. Minus a point there. You have to have good salsa, thats just all there is to it. This aint it. All in all the food itself was good, except for the salsa. Given the other issues (cramped tight seating, mystery entrance) I would pick another spot close by for Mexican food. read more

Absolutely love this place. The atmosphere is not your typical Mexican restaurant fare. The decor is top notch which adds to the dining experience. Not mention, they have set the bar high for others when it comes to providing exceptional service. The food is plentiful for the price points. The quality and taste are superb. You surely get your "money's worth" when dining at this establishment. My mother and stepfather mentioned this establishment after visiting the other Mexican restaurant in the area for many years. After visiting Monte De Rey, we no longer patronize the other. This establishment has everything and more when the Mexican food craze hits.
