Monterrey is one of our favorite Hwy 92 haunts. It's close, with consistently good food and excellent service. 3 necessities to keep us coming back! We have our usual dishes. For me the Texas Rice never fails and my wife usually gets the #8, enchilada, tamale, rice and beans. We also get the queso with chorizo or just queso. Both excellent. But tonight we stepped out side the box. I had the shrimp tacos with rice. The shrimp were perfectly cooked and came with pico de gallo and a chipotle sauce. The shrimp were plump! This was very filling with 3 tacos! My wife got the special which was a great deal at $9 for 2 ground beef tacos and rice and beans. Simply made with cheese and lettuce. Everything was wonderful! The very first time we came here over 3 years ago, we noticed how different the refried beans were. We absolutely love them. They have a hint of lime I am thinking? At any rate you should try them! I enjoyed my lunch very much and will definitely return. I only ordered the speedy Gonzales for lunch so hard to really get a feel for how good the food is here, but what I did have was wonderful. The beef was soft and silky. The lettuce was fresh and crisp. They were generous with the cheese too. The salsa was wonderful. It had the perfect amount of spice and plenty of cilantro and onion. Here is my one gripe. The enchilada had no enchilada sauce. It was topped with cheese but no sauce. It was pretty tasty without it but it would have been even better with it. Our party of 8 came here for a birthday lunch. The booths and few tables inside were unable to accommodate our group, so they pulled some tables together on the front patio. Despite being February it was an usually warm and sunny day, so this worked perfectly for us. The patio also has a covered section for days when the sun is too hot or for rain, and the area has about a half-dozen small square tables and a fence to keep wayward children from wandering into traffic. The complimentary chips were crisp and the salsa was a medium spiciness. We ordered two queso dips (one without and one with jalapenos). We were awaiting the rest of the party, so we specifically requested the queso to no be delivered until they arrived so it wouldn't get cold. We reminded them again when reviewing our orders and they agreed to that. But they ignored our request and served the queso immediately, but thankfully the group arrived before the dip had gotten too cold. The jalapeno dip strangely did not have any noticeable heat despite a lot of visible pepper. The server was friendly and kept chip and drink refills coming. The food came out withing a reasonable time. The portions were generous but my wife and I agreed it was quite flavorless and we both used the salsa to give our meals some life. We both had the bowls and I had the Fajita Bowl with mushrooms substituting for green peppers (at an up charge). read more

Clean and busy at a lunch time. Today we sat inside the restaurant. Ambiance was nice. Have been here before but we sat outside. On a sunny day that's a great choice too. I had a beef taco salad with extra cheese. Crust was little dark, but still tasted good. It was really good and the salsa was not too spicy for me. So I really enjoyed my meal. Nice thing is, that they cook their beans at the restaurant and they do not use lard in cooking. My friend had a chicken taco salad and, was expecting shredded chicken instead of chicken junks. She asked about it and the server immediately go her a new shredded chicken taco salad. This was a really enjoyable experience. I will be back. The service was excellent. read more

As soon as we arrived we were all greeted with a warm welcome by Alonso, and he sat us at our table. I asked him what he recommends and based on his response, there is simply no wrong choice. Chips, salsa, and water arrived as we were getting situated. The team here works together very well. Kim was our waitress, and was very kind and attentive! We were having a great time speaking with Mario and Juan about all the different meals as well because we were having a bit of a dilemma with our decisions, as we wanted to try a bit of everything. This is our third time here (you'd think we'd know what we wanted by now) but I know that there will be many more visits. I just feel bad that I hadn't left a review sooner! Jesus and Luis took care of us the last couple times, so that gives me some inclination that they treat their staff well from an employee retention standpoint, they were here from the first time I came in!
