On arrival I was happy to be greeted with Chips and Salsa (very good) one suggestion though maybe a little more heat and tsp of cumin, but non the less very tasty. I ordered Horchata I highly recommend this tasty drink, I wasn't sure what to order so I had the Taquitos special ( 5 taquitos w/ sour cream, pico de gallo, lettuce, and guacamole. I absolutely love when the meals comes with sour cream. pico de gallo, lettuce, and guacamole, the guacamole and pico de gallo were made in house and love that you could taste the lime. The special does not come with rice and beans. I wish they would of made the taquitos :-( no doubt about it they were store bought but still very good. My son had the quesadilla which came with fries ( yummy) I was looking around seeing what other people were ordering I think I'll try caldo de pollo next time or the combo plate, Thank you Garry for the suggestion! read more

I was excited to try this placed: always heard good things about the food. Well for me it starts with service. A lot can be forgiven with great service. It took 10 minutes to get our drink order out & 15 minutes to get chips & salsa. We ordered and it took another 30 minutes to bring our food out. I ordered the pork chop breakfast which came out like warm. Needless to say I was very disappointed. Meanwhile we had to repeatedly ask for water & tea refills. Our glasses stayed empty the majority of the time. Worst of all they automatically add 15% gratuity to tickets for 6 or more people. If not for that I would leave no more than 5% tip. So glad we found this restaurant while traveling through Abilene. Top notch food and very nice people, let alone what a bargain! My wife and I both had the #19. Cheese Enchilada was excellent. I liked the tamale with shredded beef my wife said it had too much beef but a very unique flavor. Chile relleno was also really good. Here is a place you may want to try out, Monterreys Restaurant you can find them at 3310 N 10th Street Abilene Texas (915) 673-1722. It's a little out of the way and off the regular path on most lunch goers. I met up with a group of people Sunday around lunch time, I had already been to the IHOP so I only had coffee. Every time I go to a Mexican restaurant I usually get bland Bean-And-Cheese burritos. This time, the beans were delicious, the cheese was how I liked it, the salsa and chips were fresh and very tasty. My family recommends this as well. 10/10. I enjoyed eating here. read more

Before the menu update we were here twice a week. When we came in on the Friday before last the place was so packed we left for a an hour and came back and still had to wait nearly 30 mins for a table. Tonight the place was mostly empty at the same time of day on the same day of the week. Maybe this menu update was a bad idea? We don't like the new menu at all. I understand the price increases but put it back the way it was. The reaction the employees had to our reaction to the menu indicated they have heard the same thing many times in the last week or so. read more

I went there I ordered the basic enchilada Plate. It was the worst Mexican food I've ever had. The rice was bland.. no flavor at all. They do not have chile con queso I got a bowl of melted cheese, that was not fresh, it tasted a little old. The enchiladas were not tasty either. I gave 4 stars because the waitress was great and very friendly. The resturant was very clean. The staff were very friendly and nice. It is a welcoming place. I got the steak fajitas and they were okay. I was disappointed as the steak lacked flavor. But the steak was very tender. The beans were tasty! I am normally not a rice and beans fan but the beans were good. I didnt try the rice as I was not in the mood. The service was great which makes it harder to give an honest review but here it goes... the food was not good at all. The chicken enchilada was the best thing there and it tasted more like a tamale. The Gordita had some weird chili like stuff in it but the lettuce and tomato at the top was good. The rice tasted burned to me and the guacamole salad was plain with no seasoning at all. This place has the best Mexican food in Abilene and the whole area around. They fully stuff their enchiladas and everything else. They put enough sauce on what needs it and they put cheese on the beans. The quesadillas are the best ever eaten anywhere. When you ask for extra sour cream they bring you plenty, not a little in a very tiny cup. Everything we've had has been wonderful and their prices are very decent. Most places you go these days feels like you are being fleeced with skimpy offerings and almost $40 for two people. What a treat to pay for a meal that is worth every penny and for them to make money too. The service is very good and the place is clean. What more could you ask for? I had never given a try till a couple of months ago but let me tell you I've been missing out a lot. I pretty much take my mom out to eat every other week or so and this is our go to place. This is not a chain restaurant and I'm so glad its not. The food tastes great and authentic! The management and servers always seem very glad to see you and excited to serve you. I always get the Mexican or Combination plate. You can't really go wrong. As most that read my reviews, I hate onions and if you do not tell them otherwise your food will have copious amounts. Just a word of warning to the international club of onion haters. The only bad thing, because on my reviews I do like to give one honest con, is that their queso tastes cheap and seems like its out of can. We had sent ours back and our very delightful server on most everything else, did not try very hard to fix the problem. I saw her go to the hot water of the coffee machine to try and heat it up. We finally ended up adding some of the salsa and just suffered through the barely luke warm cheese. I would say though even after that, all the servers are really good and try to help. My family and I enjoyed our food here. We are vegetarians and there was no lard in the beans. There are three main things I judge a mexican restaurant: Rice, Beans, Salsa and Guacamole. I hate to do this, but people need to know how bad this place is. I am known by my wife and kids as the "Human Garbage Disposal" because I eat everything on my plate and all their left overs too. Actually I was raised poor and taught it was wasteful to leave food on your plate. I have eaten everything from monkeys to piranhas and enjoyed it. Needless to say, I am not a picky eater. My wife did not eat breakfast and about lunch we wanted some authentic Mexican Caldo De Res. We were on our way to another restaurant when I spotted the Monterey Restaurant. It looked like a hole in the wall place and that is what I like (Not a chain restaurant person), so we pulled in. My first warning that we were in for a huge disappointment was when the chips and salsa came. The chips were okay, but my first taste of the salsa and I was like "yuck!" It tasted like it was made out of canned stewed tomatoes. I mean I had to stir it around a bit (very watery) to even find a piece of cilantro. I understand that some Americans don't like real salsa and some restaurants serve the bland mild stuff for this reason, so I asked the waitress if they had any spicier salsa. Nope! I have never been to a Mexican restaurant that did not have a second "Hotter" salsa option. I should have walked out right then, but I wanted to give them a chance, and I was very hungry. Then came the Caldo de Res. Me and my wife took a bite at the same time and saw the look on each other's face. My wife was like' What is that awful taste. We had both bit into the cabbage and it tasted like sauerkraut. Next we tasted the beef. OMG! I almost threw up in my mouth. It tasted like old dried musty meat. Like if you hung strips of beef in a moldy basement for a week before making soup out of it. On my third bite I tasted just the broth. I could detect no other seasoning in it other then a tiny bit of salt. That was it! We got up, paid and left. I am 43 years old and never in my life have I have left a bowl of soup unfinished until today. Three bites was all I could handle. I hope I don't get sick and die from those three bites. When I paid, our waitress asked if everything was okay. I said, "Honestly, it was pretty bad." I thought she might ask me what I did not like about it or call the manager, since we did not eat our food. But no, she just smiled on took our money. This told me that this restaurant does not care that it is producing horrible food and that customers are leaving disgusted. So not only is the food horrible, the service is too.
