Came here on a weekday night after a workout class, and this was one of the few Italian places in the neighborhood that didn't have a wait. I've heard a lot of good things about the Montesacro in SoMa (specifically the pizza), but was in the mood for pasta. My friend got a seafood bucatini (special for the night) and I got a gnocchi that had tender meat in it. The pastas were good and chewy but not super standout. The arancini though was fantastic, one of the best I've had -- perfectly crispy outside and creamy inside. We came here for a girl's night out after snagging a last minute reservation for 7 on a Saturday night at 6pm. Immaculate ambiance, lighting and music were both top notch. Plating of each dish was gorgeous. A few of us ordered the polpo and tartare di manzo to start. I can't emphasize how fresh each ingredient was! Wine list was extensive and service was fine. My friend and I split the lasagna asparagi e funghi and the maranella pinsa for our mains. Both were tasty, but could've used a little more salt. Generous portion for the pinsa, but the lasagna was definitely on the smaller side. I found myself searching for a bit more dimension in the dishes, which were certainly not bad, but nothing I would personally rave about. This is a lovely spot for pinsa's (slightly different but the same as pizzas) in the marina! We did take out and they had a few deals that were lovely so we got dessert. The margarita pinsas were delicious. Pick up was on time and they were warm when we got home. Great service! Since the bread is slightly thicker than a traditional margarita it was lovely for take out and not soggy at all!! High quality flavors! The chocolate torta was yummy but slightly lacked flavor! I was in the area to pick up a cake from Susie's (highly recommend) and decided to check this out as I was having a craving for Italian (an Italian craving Italian food, go figure). The place was slow, but it was early still so I'm sure it would pick up at dinner time. The bartender was very accommodating and attentive. He was actually very talkative and struck up some good conversations. The place had the upscale feel to it as well, so it would work well for date nights. read more

What happened? We just came back after some time in which travel and personal events took us to other destinations and it was completely disappointing! The service was just focused on getting tasks done, never checked in with us to confirm things were going well, like their did not care at all. If I could, I would have assigned no star! They were out of two of f two of the main staters ( meatballs and suppli) at 7:45pm and served prosciutto and mozzarella di buaffala without any bread at all! The saltimboacca were drenched in oil and fat and had no flavor or sage and the pinsa was cold, to the point that the mozzarella was not even melted. The dessert list was generic Italian dessert that you can find anywhere (including Safeway!) so not worth it. read more

Something went down since my last visit here.....Menu was severely stripped down, no Carbonara (which is the queen of Roman kitchen), only 2 out of 3 Secondi available and a very dry pinsa. Disappointed by my latest visit. The house baked bread at the start ended up being my favorite part of the meal. The bread is fluffy and goes so well with the olive oil + a dab of flaky salt. They no longer had the eggplant fritters, so we got squash fritters instead. Unfortunately, this had no discernible squash taste, and was too cheesy for me, though others seemed to like it. This time, I opted for a margherita pinsa (and added proscuitto), but the crust wasn't as soft and airy as I recalled. Pretty underwhelming. My boyfriend was super bummed that they no longer had the carbonara because that was his favorite pasta in the city (and our main reason for coming). Having eaten at Montesacro SOMA many times, we were excited about Montesacro Marina. So when some friends asked us to check it out we were all over it! We started with the pork Porchetta, Slow Roasted Pork, Extra Virgin Olive Oil, Sea Salt, Fennel and Oranges, Olives. The oranges, fennel and pork was a heavenly combination! Second was the CARBONARA. Rigatoni, Egg Yolk, Guanciale, Pecorino, Black Pepper. Perfect. Loved the Rigatoni! Great ambience and service was pretty good but the food was really no good. The lasagna was in one word: offensive. Not sure what they were going for with this one. But the sauce was tasteless, the pasta was both soggy and dried out, and the zucchini was...shriveled and flavorless. Saltiness, flavorless, colorless dish. Mushy pasta with some ricotta. The pizzas were alright. They are exuberantly priced for the size, even for SF. The dough is pretty special but it seems tricky what you can use as topping. Casalbertone was pretty good because there was limited ingredients sitting on top but the fancier pepperoni pizza was just salty, bitter and soggy. I started the new year with brunch on New Year's Day here. We were seated at a window table that had a nice view of outside & was decorated with holiday lights. They have a brunch menu that includes bottomless cocktails for $23 (choice of mimosa, Aperol Spritz, espresso martini or Bloody Mary). I started with a mimosa & my friend had an Aperol Spritz. Yum! For starters, we had the pulpo, which is tender & flavorful. We also shared a kale salad (to be healthy). I had the eggs Benedict which featured prosciutto. The eggs were perfectly poached and the hollandaise sauce was yummy. My friend said that she enjoyed her steak & eggs. We had several more cocktails (since they were bottomless). Headline: Waiter almost caused a deadly allergic reaction for my mother. We recently returned to this restaurant which we have loved for many years, but unfortunately nothing went right during this visit. It started off with slow service and just got worse. Our waiter, Ian, took at least 15 minutes to come to our table and it took even longer than that to be given water. The cocktail my husband ordered was never delivered. Then we discovered that the restaurant is now fully-gluten free. As someone who has several family members with allergies, I appreciate having this option for people with celiac disease. However, in the process of updating the food they made radical changes to their recipes. Ian told us that all of the tomato sauces now have eggs and dairy in them (?) so my son couldn't have any Italian dishes such as Amatriciana, which he has eaten in dozens of restaurants. There was basically nothing my son could eat. Ian later mentioned that they have one, canned vegan tomato sauce that he could have. It would have been nice if he'd mentioned that sooner, but by then my son had left to get food at another restaurant. The worst thing was the way Ian handled my mother's allergies. She provided him with a printed list of her allergens, but he barely glanced at it. He promised us several times that the pizza she had enjoyed in the past hadn't changed at all, it was "exactly the same." After ordering, it occurred to me that they most likely had changed the dough as part of the gluten-free switch. So, I asked the Ian what flour was used in the dough, and he said it had corn in it. That's my mother's top allergen, which he would have known if he had bothered to look at the list we provided or take the time to listen to us. Eating pizza with corn flour in it would have sent her directly into anaphylactic shock. The manager came to our table and was lovely and apologetic. But we got not one "I'm sorry" from Ian, just condescending "have a nice day" responses to our comments. Bottom line, I don't recommend this restaurant if you don't need a gluten free menu. If you do go and have any allergies, be sure to ask lots of questions about ingredients, because the recipes are very different than at other Italian restaurants. As a PS, we left Montesacro Marina and drove across town to Montesacro SOMA (which hasn't switched to gluten-free). There we enjoyed efficient service and delicious food. read more

The table next to us was celebrating a birthday, and I don't think I've seen waitstaff more patient or more enthusiastic in helping to celebrate her birthday. Props to them! Lychee martini- 5/5 honestly don't think I've ever tasted a lychee martini that went wrong Amatriciana- 3/5 nice chewy noodles, on the saltier side. A bit forgettable. Saw Montesacro's happy hour featured in a reel and I knew I had to come in for those sweet deals! Only problem, the deals were made to look a bit sweeter than they actually are. So, here we have another case of expectations that weren't met. Good: -Both the indoor seating and the parklettes were really nice! We sat in the parklettes, and you almost didn't event realize you were on the street in SF. They weren't too loud, and felt clean. -The happy hour apertivo deal was great, $8 for any of the apertivo/spritz drinks, as well as house wine and a pilsner on tap. I ordered the spagliato and hugo spritz and enjoyed both - perfect for summer sipping! Meh: -Pinsetta Margherita, while this actually tasted really good, it was so small. I wouldn't have been as disappointed if the reel I saw didn't show a full Pinsa but advertise their $10 happy hour pinsa's. Probably better off getting a full one than the happy hour since 1 full one is cheaper than 2 of these tiny ones. -Service was nothing special, not really friendly or welcoming. We often sat there for a while with empty glasses before getting helped, mind you we were the only two people there. -Suppli al telefono, also known as mozzarella rice croquettes. They were fine, they were a decent size and had a good crisp to them, but really nothing special, and I wouldn't get them again. Bad: -The charcuterie plate, also called the Tagliere misto. This was thoroughly disappointing. We weren't told what the items were when it were delivered, but the meat was mortadella and I couldn't tell you what the cheese was, because I've never had a cheese that tasted quite like it. It tasted chalky and like hay on a working animal farm. We tried so hard to make it better with the honey and the meat, but there was no getting past that flavor or smell. Everything was amazing. I have no idea how this place only has 4.1 stars. The staff were excellent, the food amazing, and the drinks SO good. I asked for a cucumber gimlet with egg white froth (which is not on their menu) and they happily made me one without making me feel like I was being obnoxious. The vibe was also perfect. It felt energetic without being too loud. You could have a conversation and it felt kinda fancy without being stuffy. We also just came from a visit to Napa and the wine here was one of the best we've had! So, yeah, this restaurant is a great date night spot whether you're gf or not. Just reopened as a 100% gluten free kitchen. Food was great. We tried meatballs, rigatoni, and margarita pizza and all tasted great. Meatballs even came with some good crusty GF baguette. Staff was knowledgeable about all ingredients as we had a few other sensitivities and were happy to check with the kitchen. Yay!! I am over the moon to have safe GF Italian! Not having to worry about shared ovens, or fryers, etc. is something I wasn't sure I'd get to experience again. I came here last night and was pleased at having so many delicious options. We had the gamberi and suppli to start, the gnocchi ragu, the casal bertone pinsa, and a delicious pistachio tiramisu to end. All of which were incredible and very filling! Props to the bar as well because our margarita was smooth but not overly light. Not only was the food delicious, but the staff were so kind and personable. Our waiter was pleasant, funny, and checked in often. There was another man helping him bring our drinks who noticed our table was slightly wobbly. Nothing too bothersome, but he fixed it for us immediately. There was also a woman with blonde curly hair (Erin I think) who chatted a bit with every table, even the people waiting to be seated and the staff made sure the guests had drinks while they waited. I really missed this very specific ambience + cuisine combination for date nights. Thank you to Alice's for giving me and my partner a sense of normalcy back! Literally my favorite restaurant and pizza in the city. I've typically been going to the one in Soma, but it's bordering Tenderloin so I'll be coming to this spot from now on. I'll say I prefer the decor at the Soma location tho, it feels very rustic Italian, which I love. This spot is still very nice but it doesn't have that Italian cozy feeling. Anyway, I always order the same pizza, the Torpignattara- mozzarella, potato, pesto, pine nuts and lemon zest. I've had other pizza's here but they didn't stand out to me like this one. My most recent time, we ordered the Mortadella app called Focaccia Der Muratore. It was so simple but so good, it came with a generous amount of mortadella. We also tried the Roasted Chicken, they let us know it would take 20 minutes to cook but it definitely took longer than 20 mins. Regardless, it was worth the wait. It was soooo tender and juicy. I would order it again for sure. My only feedback would be the service was a little confusing, we were helped by everyone. Sometimes that can be confusing when I don't know if we have a designated server or if it's just full service from everyone. Soma location, I was always introduced to our designated server. None the less, we were always helped right away and they were very quick and friendly. I also noticed they do not have heater outside on their outdoor seating. this review isn't 100% fair because i couldn't try their pizza and most of their pasta options because of my gluten allergy...but from what i ordered the pasta was delicious! i never had such good gluten free pasta before. the noodles were so chewy and the beef veal sauce was light and not too salty or greasy. it came with a dollop on cheese on top as well which was a perfect addition to the dish. i loved that they had gluten free bread as an option as well which also tasted pretty solid! the service was amazing and i loved how the waitress we had was so passionate about every item on the menu. the ambiance of the restaurant is also so romantic and beautiful. can't wait to go back when my allergies get less severe and try more of their food! read more

Tasty food but there was very little meat in my meat dish, very little calamari in the calamari dish and Very small servings, Very expensive. Waitress and service was very nice and helpful. This was my first time going here and I went for brunch. I ordered a frittata (as pictured) and was very disappointed. For $19 I'd expect something a bit more sophisticated or at least better quality. I ended up not even eating it. The bottomless brunch experience was fine but our waitress barely came around, and didn't let us know that the bottomless started for everyone when the first person ordered. We had one person arrive 30 + mins late, so that would've been nice to know. We were the only party there, so it was a bit confusing why we got such little attention from our waitress and no explanation as to how the bottomless worked. They were also out of bloody Mary's, but our waitress didn't tell us until after we ordered. My friends got the pinsas and said they were good. I came here with a small group of friends for an early dinner at 5:30pm. There was a slightly older crowd there already having their dinner. The restaurant was very cute and they have outdoor seating too. We ordered Cauliflower salad - the roasted cauliflower was good and it was refreshing. Croquettes - rice, tomato and cheese. Really crispy and it was tasty! Pesto Gnocchi - the texture was fluffy! Squid Ink bucatini with clams - I loved the texture of this fresh pasta. Strong seafood flavor. My date told me how amazing the Montesacro was in SoMa, so we had to come try their new location in the Marina! I absolutely loved the pasta and pinsa! Really adorable Italian restaurant in the Marina! I think the biggest reason I liked this place was because of the ambiance. The restaurant is on the smaller side which makes it a very intimate experience which I personally loved. We were greeted by a very friendly hostess who seated us right away! Throughout the night, the staff was super friendly and actively checking in if we needed anything. We also got to hear a little bit about their favorite dishes and more about the restaurant itself. We had the Cacio e Pepe which was great but I wish was a bigger portion and had a bit more cheesy flavor. The pizza crust was phenomenal for those who like more doughy pizza but I wish there were more broccolini and turkey sausage bits since it was a little heavy on the mozzarella. I have been to Montesacro a few times. If you only get entrees they are good but it leaves something to be desired. They are pretty expensive and small portion size. One time when I came they were doing a panzanella salad as a special for an app and that was amazing. I've been to the SOMA Montesacro, but wanted to check out this one. The atmosphere is super swank. They said they have a new chef from Italy, and the menu is different than the one in SOMA, where they are more focused on pinsas. We got the spinach salad, octopus and artichoke appetizers, which were all delicious and amazing. I got the pork cheek gnocchi but with gluten free penne instead, which was very good, although I think the penne could be better (I eat Veneziane brand at home, which is better than what they used). We also got a gluten free baguette which was really terrible. The pinsas were a bit disappointing as well ... not terrible, but just sort of OK. Service was OK with a lot of waitstaff who were friendly, although my waitress told me the gluten free pasta was rigatoni, and it turned out to be penne. Get the non-pinsa stuff here ... read more

I came here for a birthday celebration and loved the ambiance, service, and food! They brought out a birthday dessert, which was a nice touch to the end of the meal. Very heavy, but well worth it and delicious. The cocktails were delicious: dirty martini, espresso martini, and specialty cocktail. I was so excited to see this location in the Marina as I was driving on Lombard. I've been to the downtown location for lunch a few times, but it isn't somewhere I would want to go in the evening or when it's dark. The Marina can be so challenging for parking, but closer to Lombard makes it easier. Last night we went and almost no one was there. On a Saturday night! Have people not discovered how amazing this restaurant is?! Everything we had was delicious! We started with some fantastic margaritas of all things. They just sounded good, and they were fantastic! They also had my son's favorite - Mole Cola, so he was happy. Then we got the bread basket (a must!!), the suppli, chicory salad, and the tonno salad. We wanted to try so many things, but kept it to those. We loved them all. Then we got two margherita pizzas and two pastas -- the gnocchi and the caccio e pepe. Incredible. Montesacro is a super cute, romantic, date spot. Or for any other somewhat special occasion, I'd highly recommend. The reason I say special occasion is that it is a bit pricey, and is a bit dressier in terms of the atmosphere. Their food is absolutely delicious. From their pizza's to their main courses And several appetizers, most notably to me, the Arancini, are all amazing options. You can't go wrong ordering something on this menu. Every time I go all see waiters bringing food out to the table next to me and wish I'd ordered that as well. It all looks so good! And it tastes even better! They have a cute Parklet for outdoor seating, but it's a busy street full of a lot of restaurants with outdoor seating so I prefer to sit inside where it's a bit more intimate. read more

Yummy! Montesacro does great pinsa and some other dishes: usually a nice walk-in option for a weekend evening. We got the arancini (5/5), the pinsa with broccoli raab (4/5), and the pasta with seafood (2/5). The arancini were great -- crisp and hot and savory! Definitely order these. The pinsa was good too, but I found the crusts extremely hard, maybe too hard even. I know pinsa is not the same as pizza -- but something made chewing these crusts a challenge. I thought the pasta was good albeit too al dente. We found it could have been cooked a touch more and still had the hard white line inside. Service here is average -- not overly nice yet not rude. A blessing for those who must be gluten free. ! It is so rare that our family can eat EVERYTHING on the menu. You don't realize how special that is until you can't do it anymore, and are relegated to a couple of salads at a restaurant that "might" be gluten free if you're lucky. The manager (I think) came out and talked to us too, and the whole environment was cozy and friendly. The gnocchi was our favorite, and the chocolate torte. Service was great, and the wine! Would recommend for celiacs and non celiacs alike! read more

Been here many times as I used to work right around the corner. Everything is good, but by far my favorite thing they have is the trippa. Wonderfully soft with good bite and a great sauce to accompany it. Was very sad to learn that it is taken off the menu and I await it return so I can show my friends my favorite dish here. read more

My bestie and I had the bestttt dinner at Montesacro a few weeks ago, celebrating Galentine's Day! Victor was our server and he was SO friendly and accommodating. We had a great time with our drinks & food. What we tried: - Golden beet salad: LOVED the golden beets with the goat cheese and sunflower seeds. It was a refreshing and tasty start to our meal. - Polpo: the octopus was grilled to literal perfection. I went to Greece & Italy a few months ago and this definitely compares to what I had overseas!! It was super tender and we both were so impressed because it's pretty easy to overcook octopus. - Grilled lamb chops: we both aren't lamb lovers but these grilled lamb chops were cooked medium rare and not gamey at all. The rapini greens that accompanied weren't my fav, but the lamb was the star nonetheless. - Garbatella pinsa: i've had their other pinsas before, but we tried something new today with this tuna pinsa! I've been loving tuna and this was no exception, we appreciated the combo of calabrian chile + pickled onion for the sharp flavors and the textural contrast of the crispy pinsa. - Pistachio cream pinsa: the best end to our meal!! The pistachio cream stuffed pinsa brought me back to Italy--sweet and decadent! We also had some drinks--they have a great wine list, and we loved the dessert vermouth we tried (mancino sakura vermouth). It was sweet with a touch of floral notes from the cherry blossom. I've also had a few of their other pinsas, but I cannot stop thinking about the casal bertone pinsa with the fatty guanciale & chestnut honey! Ahh i'll be back for that one! The service was excellent, kind, and welcoming! As for the new menu items, the CARCIOFI & ANATRA DUO were favs! Not sure what the fish/collar dish was called but it was also very good! The homemade bombolone and espresso martinis were a perfect way to end the night! read more
