Came here to drop off some everyday batteries. I remembered I had to put each battery in its own separate plastic bag and then for any lithium batteries, I put tape over the top where the plus and minus were. Once I got to the area to drop them off, I had to get out of my vehicle to take the items to a table where an employee was there to take them. I had to then remove each battery from its bag to which the employee place them in containers they had (I saw they all didn't go in the same one). As I went through the process, they gave me some extra tips which I appreciated. One of them was that I should use shipping tape and not regular tape so that was good to know. This place is great. Recycle almost anything. if your in a private vehicle its free. Everyone who works there is very helpful. They have separate areas for metal, electronics, general trash and more. Very easy to find your way around. Sometime you have to wait 5 or 10 minutes in line if its crowded, but its worth it. read more

8/23/24 Should you need to get rid of your unwanted bikes, computers, refrigerators, pornographic magazine collections, yard shurbs/waste residential oil waste and all around garbage, this place is for you. Especially if the junk you have is more than the garbage workers can handle. For a long time we have had bedding frames that should have been removed by Bob's Discount Furniture. The people assigned to remove the bedding refused to take frames. Long story short,...the hell with Bob's Discount Furniture. Today, I am taking the bed flats to The Montgomery County Shady Grove Transfer Station and Recycling Center. When I lived in Rockville, I remember passing this place a number of times and never gave it a second thought. The signs for where to go aren't to clear, but once you enter through the main gates it pretty much a direct path. Once you get to the top of the hill, the garbage waste is on the left. There is also a place to get rid of unwanted oil. If you go to the left, the first station you will see on your right is the electronics center. This is for unwanted computers, tv's, playstation, xbox and holiday lights to name a few. Behind the electronics disposable is the paper recycling center. Unwanted bicycles are sometimes deposited here as well. The next location is for Residential Oil Waste. I have not needed to visit this location except for driving around it. Getting rid of the planks from our old bed was very satisfying. Granted I would have like to recycle the wood, but I had more issues with trying to recycle wood "the right way", that I no longer cared what happened to the wood. Nevertheless, in just a few short minutes I was able to get rid of what I did not want. This place makes the Virginia Recycling Center look like child's play. My plan is to get rid of the last three sections of our old bed by next week. We will see what happens when that time comes. read more

Every time I go here there's a different process or problem. One time I went here, the building was "broken" so that's it? I have a truck full of garbage until it's fixed? Another they wouldn't take roof shingles, so I said fine, ill just dump the wood, nope, said i couldn't go in with shingles at all. What? Other times, i go in, drive right in, dump my stuff and don't even talk to anyone. This place needs to get their life together. Either have a process or not. This is a chaotic facility but hopefully if you have to visit you don't have to visit often. I needed to haul away a bunch of pallets from Lowe's and Home Depot when I had various lawn and garden item deliveries this summer so I rented a Home Depot truck and headed to this facility after calling 240-777-0311 and confirming location, hours, reservations needed (they don't), and acceptable items and weight. I was not told to bring $20 cash deposit or a check. The signage was not very clear where to go. One person directed us to dispose of the pallets without getting weighed or receiving a ticket; however when we tried to enter that way, a man flagged us down and said we have to get weighed. After waiting in a long line to get weighed, the employee at the weigh station who was extremely unfriendly said that I needed to give him $20 or a check. I asked if they accepted credit cards, but they did not. He told me to exit and come back with money. Before leaving, we asked another attendant where the closest ATM was, and he told us that it was off-site at some nearby gas stations. I returned with cash, got weighed, paid the deposit, and joined the queue to dispose the trash in a huge open building with a giant pit in the center. You have to back into a spot and dump everything really fast right onto the ground. It's smells horrendous, and there's dust and debris everywhere, so bring a face mask if you are sensitive to these things. Then you get in a long line to get weighed again to see if your load was 500 pounds or less. If it is less, then you get your $20 back. If it is more, then you get a small amount back depending on how much you went over, or no money back at all. Then, leave this chaotic facility as fast as you can! read more

This is a very convenient facility open 7 days a week and free for County residents. They recycle electronics, paper, plastic, glass, cardboard, bicycles, clothing, shoes, hazardous materials (paint, motor oil, pesticides), Christmas trees, large appliances, bulk metal, etc. If you ever get the opportunity to tour the facility - jump on it! It's very interesting to see what happens to all the stuff you put in your blue bins and leave at the side of the road for pickup. read more

Property contained and labeled yard trim was posted Thursday evening but not picked up yesterday (normal day), not even today Saturday ((typical overload day). So, two loaded cans are left at curb to greet tomorrow's dinner guests from out of state. Not a good showing for our "upscale" county. The Montgomery County Recycling Center or Dump... as everyone refers to it, is open to all residents of Montgomery County. You can drive your car/truck/van/playskool toy car ( anything) up to these giant partially underground bins and toss pretty much anything and everything in ( with a few exceptions). I don't know if you've thrown a giant piece of glass down 15 feet and seen it shatter into a million pieces... but there is something oddly cathartic. The whole process is pretty self explanatory. There are signs everywhere with what types of materials you should throw where. As a MoCo County resident we are fortunate to have such a facility that gives residents an opportunity to recycle as well as dispose of items. The facility layout is well organized and easy to navigate. Staff are present and can help advise you if you have questions about where to go. Sometimes the staff are a little cranky or rude but i cut them slack since they work in trash dump all day and it must cause some mental health challenges. I came here today with a group of about 30, for a parent-led field trip on a school closure day. The kids were a mix of pre-k and young elementary school age and all had a BLAST. We organized the visit through the field trip request form on the MoCo Recycling Center website and they put together such a thoughtful, age-appropriate program. A wonderful woman named Debbie gave a presentation that went about 30 minutes (kept all of the kids attention the whole time and was very participatory). Then they got to view the sorting room which was totally amazing and impressive. The kids had so much fun and so did the adults. We all learned a ton. This is a really fantastic and educational field trip location - highly, highly recommend for all ages! read more

As odd is it sounds, I love going to the dump. There's something therapeutic about getting things out of your house and recycling them. I've been to this particular center many times (I wish I had a punch card!), and I've never had a bad experience. Everyone working here is super friendly and approachable. I always ask what I'm sure are stupid questions (where can I recycle rain boots?), and I have never been given a stupid answer. I will definitely be back with many carloads full of junk! read more

This location is conveniently located off 355, with a separate truck entrance off Shady Grove Rd. It's very easy to navigate through as everything is cleary labeled and there is always staff on hand to ask questions. The facility accepts: electronics, paper, motor oil, vegetable oil, scrap metal, old paints, books, old clothing for recycling, as well as regular trash dumping and yard waste. Weekends get pretty busy, so I recommend going on a weekday I you can. read more

I have seen other recycling and disposal areas in California and the Montgomery County recycling facility is the best organized facility I have used. The employees are knowledgeable and have answered my questions. The layout of the facility makes it easy to find the disposal center one is seeking. read more
