My wife and I were looking to adopt a dog. I had never done so before, so I went to the closest SPCA (this one) to visit the dogs, possibly play with a couple of them. Contradictory to what others have said about the personnel, I found them to be friendly and helpful. I walked through the kennel, found a couple dogs I liked, and went back to the front desk to inquire. They told me I couldn't play with any of them until I was approved. I had no obligation to adopt, but I was surprised that I couldn't even interact with one before getting approval to adopt a specific dog. Thus, I submitted an application and waited 24 hours for approval. Then when I went back to visit the dog and have playtime, the staff asked me to start the adoption process. I was taken back. I hadn't spent any time with this dog, and they wanted me to take him right away? I felt pressured and wondered how could anyone bond enough with a dog without playing with him first. The closest I got to the dog was letting him sniff my hand through the cage. I left the shelter and went to the Delco SPCA. As soon as I walked into this shelter, they told me if there were any dogs I was interested in, I could just ask a staff member for a leash and play with the dog outside. No application or approval needed, and I could spend as much time with the dog as I wanted. This experience made me realize that Montco is on the lower end of the SPCA spectrum. How can this shelter expect me to adopt without interaction? I recommend people travel a little bit farther to Delco where the facility is bigger, the staff is friendlier, and you have free reign to interact with any dog you desire. read more

I was looking to adopt a dog recently. I walked through the kennel area and asked the attendant if I could see a particular dog. I was told "No, that dog is not for you." I didn't think much of it and I then asked to see a different dog. I was again told "No. That dog wouldn't be good for you either." After being told no a third time for a different dog, I asked "Which dog do you recommend for me? The attendant answered that none of them would be appropriate and that I should visit a breeder. I thought that this was such an unbelievable attitude especially from an organization that is supposed to try and rehome unwanted pets. They looked at me and thought that I would not be an appropriate person to take care of an unwanted dog! Where do they get the nerve to make such misguided assumptions? I wrote to the main SPCA organization and was told that they do not have jurisdiction over the individual SPCA branches. When I visited the shelter in Philadelphia I was treated very nicely and was allowed to interact with any dog I wanted. No problem. Other people I know have had similar negative experiences at this particular SPCA. Also, they automatically schedule all pitbulls to be put down. read more

Last week my sister returned her mixed breed dog to this Montgomery County SPCA because she was not able to care for him. This was a dog that she had adopted from the same location a few years ago. The dog had some behavior and aggression issues. We believe he was poorly socialized as a puppy and neglected, which resulted in serious leash aggression that she just could never break him of. Ultimately my sister decided that the dog would be better off in another environment and that she was not the best person to provide the training that this dog really needed. We all hoped that the SPCA would find that for him. In LESS than one week the dog was euthanized. DO NOT believe the BS on their website. They will not seek behavioral therapy, they will not do all that they can to find a better home. They basically did nothing. As far as we can tell he was euthanized almost immediately, and when we called they told us there was no record of him and to email a manager. read more

Five stars for my much loved and loving adopted kitty. She went to my Veterinarian and showed antibodies for heart worm nearly two years ago, when she first came home. Yes, she was exposed at some point, but has been checking out well on her doctor visits. What if they had checked her, found those antibodies, and decided she was not adoptable!!! Pet owners have to take some responsibility. This brings me to the problem of a shelter with government contributions, such as the SPCA of Montgomery County, Pa. Regulations! They are very unlike the SPCA of Montgomery Co in Maryland, for example. In Pa they only keep strays, exceptions might be owner drop offs, for 6-7 days before euthanizing. They will try to deny this, most likely. I guess to keep us from getting upset. I have read on the Internet: They can barely afford enough anesthesia for surgeries, and do not sedate for euthanasia. They shove the poor creatures, cats and dogs, maybe a rabbit, into a mass execution container, and it is NOT PLEASANT!!! They are suffocated. In the process of fright they often turn on each other, then just grow weak, lose consciousness and die. I read of one dog who actually survived the ordeal, but I do not know what the outcome was for Him/her I know that good care is costly, but all cutbacks seem to hurt the animals. WHY IS THERE NOT SOME MORE HUMANE METHOD OF EUTHANASIA??? WHY are they not set up for charitable grants, if people who can afford it want to direct money to the euthanasia problem? Is there something we can do? In the meantime the rest of us near any of the shelters could donate disposable cameras to put pictures on the net, blankets, towels, dog chow and cat food, maybe bird seed if they have birds, ask what they need help for...maybe they have a hamster. Ask about walking dogs, provide litter and litter boxes. Direct them how you want any money gifts used...whether it be medicine, a longer stay for some pet to get a better chance, or just let them decide. If you love animals please take a stand. Maybe we have therapists out there who could volunteer to work with staff who see so much, not to get too hard. Sure they can't live with it 24/7, but on the job compassion is essential. Kudos to those staff members who hold a difficult job and remain compassionate!!!! read more

We were lied to by not one but several members of the staff at this location. We had brought our cat there with the hopes of her finding a new loving family. She was just over 1 year old and was a beautiful, very loving little girl. It broke our hearts to have to give her up but one of our older cats was not as accepting of her and therefore it became a very tense situation for the two of them. After attempting to fix their relationship and trying to get her adopted by friends for over 6 months, we came to the tough decision to give her up in hopes she would have a happy stress-free life with a new family. When I called here, they assured me she would be well taken care of and that, and I quote, "we never euthanize animals due to space issues". We were also assured by the same individual that they had plenty of space anyway. When we took her there, we found out that was a complete lie. Not only were they having space issues but they also euthanize animals regularly because of it. Having reservations, we were then reassured by the lady at the front desk that they all have a fair chance to get adopted and that she was quote "young and cute and should have no problems getting adopted". We were also given a number to call to check on her daily and were told we would be informed if she was scheduled to be put down and therefore we could come and pick her up before that should occur. We called everyday. The first day we called they said she was doing fine and was still going through the intake process. We were later informed that that too was a lie as the intake process takes minutes not days. When we called the second day we were told they couldn't give us her information and we would have to call back the next day and speak to the manager. I called first thing the next day. They had euthanized her on her second day there. There was nothing humane about how she was treated. She was given less than 2 days to be adopted, one of which we were told she was not even out on the adoption floor. When we were understandably horrified and livid by the news, we were then blamed by the woman on the phone saying that we were the ones who dropped her off there, it was our fault and if we didn't want that to happen we should have never brought her there. She was there for two days. I am sharing this story because what happened to her was no better than the cruelty this association is supposed to prevent. I also want people to be aware of the death sentence they are giving any animals they take there in hopes to find them a better life. We have to live with this mistake that we made trying to be good people. No one else should have to live with that. If you really care for your animal, don't take them here. But by all means adopt as many as you can to save them from the certain death they face at this facility. read more

I hope everyone looking for a pet goes to this SPCA in Conshocken, pa and adopts them until this God forsaken place is empty and closed down. DO NOT, I REPEAT, DO NOT take your pets to this horrible place. My friend had a beautiful white pitbull with hazel eyes and was left no other option but to bring her there because pets were not allowed where he moved to. He brought her there on Saturday, by Monday, she was put down. I asked them why, they said she was aggressive. Never said im sorry, just rudeness, and very ignorant, no compassion. I know this dog and know this is a total lie. The first day she met me she was laying her head on my lap and eating out of my hand. They pick and chose who lives and dies, and they LIE as to why they did it and how long they keep them alive. I will never donate to these horrible people and stress very deeply not to take your beloved pets to them. There are other places. Please anyplace but here. RIP DIAMOND. SHE WAS 3 YRS OLD. I'm appalled by the Montgomery County SPCA. I've been fostering a kitten since the end of December & last Sunday I brought him back into the SPCA bc he had 3 seizures. Upon arriving, we described exactly what we witnessed: he suddenly jumped up from sleeping on Mike's chest and looked absolutely petrified, was twitching, fly biting, drooling/foaming a little at the mouth & it lasted about 30 seconds. The ladies who answered the phone said we can bring him in, but they didn't think it was a seizure...we went in immediately & again described what we saw.. after looking at him for 3 seconds, they said that it "definitely wasn't a seizure, he just scared himself" then proceeded to keep him over night to give him his due round of vaccines, then the next day notified me that they neutered him & i could pick him up Tuesday morning. Now, 6 days later Milo has a few more seizures again. So we called an emergency veterinarian, describing the same thing we did to the SPCA the week before. They said we need to bring him in immediately, put him on an IV right away & requested he be kept for 12 hours so they can do tests. Throughout the night, he has cluster seizures & they call me to say they dont think he will make it through the night bc he wasn't responding to any of the medications they were giving him. Finally, around midnight, he starts responding to phenobarbital & seems to be doing okay. The bill for the emergency visit was hefty & the additional testing he needs is just not feasible for me. I only "officially" adopted him last Monday, so all his medical expenses should be covered by the SPCA for 2 weeks as long as he is cared for there, which i tried to initially do...we go into the SPCA yesterday to explain that what they dismissed last week was indeed seizures & asked why they didn't do ANY testing for him or literally anything initially. They don't have an answer for us, other than they "cant believe it" & refuse to reimburse me for his emergency visit & won't give him the additional testing he needs. Their lack of compassion/care in this situation is just sickening to me, acting like he's an object i can just return or get rid of. I love my little kitten so much & hope he keeps responding well to his medications, but just cant believe they wont help us out especially after dismissing us when we initially came to them with what was happening. Maybe someone from there will see this & give my kitten Milo the care he needs :'( read more

5 stars! Will adopt again :) I was expecting less, but was pleasantly surprised. I wish I could recall the kind gentleman's name (Paul?) who helped us save the most precious Silver Torbie at the Montgomery County SPCA in Conshohocken! He salvaged us from an extremely poor visit to a rather unprofessional no-kill "Kitty Cottage" in Norristown. Thanks to the SPCA, we now have a wonderful addition to our family: a loving gift for my wife, and a play-pal for our boys (age 11 and 6.) Please help the SPCA find new homes for these lost/abused animals, since they can't keep space for all the potential pets that enter. They need adoption more urgently than those at no-kill shelters such as Kitty Cottage. read more

We adopted our Pit Bull, Madison, from the Abington facility and she was spayed at the Conshohocken facility. Because she refused to get into my car, the wonderful worker simply picked her up and put her in the car! Maddie has turned out to be a wonderful, calm, fun-loving companion. read more

While looking to rescue a dog, we stopped to visit the many cats. One cat literally reached out of his cage to my husband - who was never a cat lover! Long story short - we ended up bringing Whisper home. He was about a year old at the time. 10 years later we are still looking for the right dog, but we are so blessed to have such an awesome cat! He has tested positive for feline leukemia, but has never shown any signs of illness. He is a happy, healthy, slightly chubby family member! He and my husband are best friends. read more

This place is just like all the other "rescues" if your a rescue then you should NEVER EVER put a time stamp on an animals life, EVER. You guys act like your so great but all you care about is MONEY you dont care about these animals, if you did care about these animals you would never euthanize them! You people make it so hard for people to adopt them, I know someone who wanted to adopt a chihuahua and you did not allow them to bc they did not have a fenced in backyard... last time I checked leashes were invented to walk dogs? And I also know someone who had lost their Akita & they called stating it was her dog she was on her way to get her baby and you guys said that's fine, within the hour it took for her to arrive at your location to get her baby, you guys had already euthanized her baby! I don't believe in anything you guys stand for. No dog should die bc you have no room, make adopting easier. read more

I applied for 2 dogs over 3 months ago and still have yet to heard from the "Manager". I have had several big dogs in my life and these dogs would have fit perfect for me. i could have continued there training and could have had great life for them. i waited 3 months to see if i was approved for these dogs and have called several times to talk to the "manager". Now i tried to do the right thing and adopt a dog for a good cause, however i could have just went out and bought a puppy. these dogs are being miss treated and neglected because the manager is the only one who approves the applications and takes months to approve. Now i have heard the manger was like this and don't adopt out big dogs and puts them down. in conclusion, this manager is horrible at his job and get his kicks by putting down dogs instead of adopting out dogs to good families. i understand that it is up to his discretion, however he needs to do HIS JOB BETTER!!!!!! read more

I have had several bad experiences with the Montgomery county SPCA. I never thought to look up reviews until now. The woman who I believe may have been previously employed there pretty much nailed it. A few years ago I went to one of the branches trying to rescue a severely underweight Neapolitan mastiff. They told me verbatim that they wouldnt cat or dog test her and they go by the typical behavior of the breed. They said it was a liability if one of the dogs or cats in the meet got injured. That being said, the dog wouldn't be adopted out to a home with cats. They also told me under no circumstances would they adopt out a pit bull mix to a home with other animals That left a pretty bad taste in my mouth. They weren't even willing to work with me to save this dog. This weekend we stopped into a different branch and fell in love with one of the pit bull mixes they had there. Her kennel card said she was good with kids and dogs as she previously lived with both. She had been turned in about 48 hour prior to our visit due to the fact that her family was moving and couldn't bring her. We Inquired about her at the reception area where they were MORE than friendly and eager to give us as much information as possible. They had said she actually hadnt had a behavior evaluation by a manager yet and that they expected that to happen within the next few days. They also made a comment that since she was an am staff mix she would require an application. I found that to be a bit weird and wondered to myself if either of the 2 small dogs that tried to rip my head off would require the same. So, unable to control my excitement, I called today to see if she had her behavior test and to set up a meet with my resident dog. The woman said she had failed her evaluation and was no longer up for adoption. She wasn't allowed to give me any additional information. We were heart broken. I feel like maybe if we were informed of her issues we could decide if it was something we were able to rehabilitate. I didn't understand why she had a kennel card with her information if she hadnt even been evaluated. Again, the staff there were more than willing to help and very pleasant. Even the woman on the phone thanked me for calling in. I love the SPCA and all they stand for, but I feel like the Montgomery county SPCA is less tolerant of any kind of behavior issues and are more willing to euthanize for space rather than work with a dog whos issues may be minor. read more

My family and I have recently returned to the area after 23 years following my husband around duty stations before he retired from the Marine Corps. We returned to the area and since we finally settled in our "forever home" decided to adopt a dog to add to our family. We have been looking for a few weeks bringing the family around to different shelters. We went here and found a dog we loved. We were excited as I went to the front desk to see if we could see the dog out of the cage. The lady at the front desk seemed uninterested. She couldn't even come see the dog we were talking about but instead made me go through pictures on her computer screen. I showed her the dog we wanted to see and she told us we couldn't even see the dog out of the cage until our application was approved. I excitedly filled out the application only to find out the manager would not review it until he returned on Monday. We were not allowed to even pet the dog or meet him out of its cage until our application was approved. I then said "okay, so we will know Monday and we can come get her" and she said "well that's if he gets to your application ". I'm not sure how they expect to have animals adopted if the potential families can't meet them until the manager "gets around" (as we were told) to our application. The following day we visited a shelter in Lancaster and were greeted by a friendly, enthusiastic team of SPCA workers who were happy to have us see the dogs out of the cages and bond with it. We had our application reviewed on the spot (and it's a Sunday) and brought our new dog home. read more

The Conshohocken and Perkiomenville locations seemed clean and maintained. The staff I spoke with was very friendly, but short on information. You fill out an adoption application and wait. I can tell you from my experience there was no update on the status. When I called the next morning, I found out the animal I was interested in had been placed with someone else who they believed to be a better fit. This is the second time my family has been through this exact scenario with the Montgomery county SPCA. I understand the best fit ideal. However, in both instances, the time frame between available and adopted was so short that it could lead one to the conclusion that the decision was made before we filled in the adoption paper work. I don't see us trying to do anything with the Montco SPCA in the future, I don't think they're a good fit for us. I will most likely continue our donations and would urge others to donate as well. I've never understood puppy mills more that I do at this moment. read more
