The facility was very clean and spacious and actually a great place to see puppies. The staff was also super friendly and knowledgeable. Not to mention patient!! I just found out recently that my dog I got here in 2016 that was sold saying he is microchipped and to find out he isn't. Also he was sold as yorkie poodle, and he almost doesn't even look like one now. He looks fully like a silkie terrier. These pets stores are such a scam to get your money! read more

We got our first dog Duffy (formerly known as noodle) in January 2014. He was a 12 week old red miniature poodle who was leftover from Christmas. He has been the biggest joy of our lives but that being said I would not recommend you buy from playful pets. When we went in (several times) pups roamed around and the conditions were dirty. We expressed interest in noodle and were told if we took him right then he would knock 50$ off the price. Basically so the store owner didn't have to pay for his care any longer. We took the deal bc the prices were already inflated. Duffy soon developed a horrible kennel cough as soon as we brought him home. He also had giardia a stomach bug. We were reimbursed by the store for his medications for both but we specifically asked if there was illness there and they lied right to our faces. He had a really tough time health wise his first few months which made us really sad. The owner of the shop couldn't care less. I was so happy to rescue my dog from that dump, but I would love nothing more than to see them shut down so they don't keep buying more dogs and leaving them in those negative conditions. Adoption 2/2023 Love it here...I know Know if you are from the community this place had had rumors attached to it. But I am here to tell you otherwise. My family and I have recently adopted a puppy from here. I am very pleased with the way it is cared for. From the actual place to the animals. The place felt like someone's home. Clean, smelled good as it could get (it is a place full of baby animals and well...) The girl who worked there was also wonderful. She was very knowledgeable, and friendly and the place reflected her. She cared. I would definitely refer someone to adopt from there. I know there is probably a more "holistic" way of adopting a puppy, but I am very pleased. Also loved the fact the all the puppies had a chance to mingle with the shop's maSCOTS. The girl who worked there had 2 dogs and the shop had 2 as well. And a cat, can't forget the cat. All got to play with each other, great for socializing My puppy ( and others) did not seem neglected and none show any type of behavior that had any 'red" flags. I also received his lineage as well. Purchased a Samoyed for almost $3,500 cash on 1/14/2023. They told me he had kennel cough and sent me home with medication. When I took him to the vet they suggested, he was diagnosed with pneumonia. He had to stay at the hospital for four days (an hour away from us) we contacted the pet store to let them know, and was told that we would be called back that day. They didn't call us back until he was home from the hospital. Beth was not empathetic to my family or our distress. He is currently still on medication. As new puppy parents this experience was very emotionally upsetting. Their approved vet said they should have never sent the puppy home with us in the first place, while he was on antibiotics medication. It is 1/31/2023 and he is still coughing a bit but getting better. They say he is AKC registered, but when I called the AKC to give his new name, they said he is not in the system. Beware. AVOID Playful Pets like the PLAGUE. This establishment deserves zero stars in my opinion and needs to be Shut Down! The owner/manager is negligent and irresponsible. The puppies are not fit for sale and likely are from puppy mills. I paid top dollar for a shepherd approximately 5 weeks ago. The puppy was sick and infested with parasites. BethAnn refused to refund my $1,750. I paid almost $2,000 for the equivalent of a "rescue" dog. BethAnn claimed the the Veterinary that examined the puppy "was out to get" Playful Pets. The veterinary indicated that the puppy had been treated an excessive number of times for worms/parasites indicating that the puppy was infested at the time of purchase. Also, the puppy vomited and had diarrhea when it arrived to my residence. BethAnn had described the puppy as a picky eater, when in fact the puppy was ill and refusing food due to illness. The male puppy also had an undescended testicle which may need to be surgically treated. BethAnn's veterinary confirmed my vet's findings. AVOID Playful Pets like the Plague. Purchase a puppy at from this establishment at your own risk. The puppies sold here are subpar quality, do not receive the proper care or vaccinations, and the owner/operator/manager engages in unethical unlawful behavior. read more

My husband and I recently purchased a miniature dachshund puppy,Short Bread, from Playful Pets. We were absolutely pleased and blown away with our experience. Not only was the staff extremely friendly they were also very knowledgeable too. They answered every question we had. They gave us a very detailed list of the vaccinations our puppy had and she also came microchipped. We took her to our vet two days after purchasing her and our vet told us she is in perfect health. One day in November 2016 I got a call a female chiweenie had been found I've looking for another one I was excited that my husband drove 4 hours NY to PA to make me happy. She cost $1400 I fell in love with the picture texted to me. When my husband got home with her she smelled she was coughing she was tiny. She came with antibiotics!!!!! She bit me she bit my other chiweenie. She was 2 months who was was aggressive. My husband said she was in a cage with other huge dogs!!!! Here's this 4 lbs puppy with huge dogs sleeping!!!!I was truly afraid. I called playful pets they had no answer why she needed antibiotics Two weeks later she was dying with no oxygen getting into her She had a bad pneumonia . I believe this business may be under new ownership. Everyone there, both over the phone and in person, was friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable. There was no hard sell, and plenty of time and freedom to meet the puppies. The place is sparkling clean and beautiful. The puppies have plenty of clean, well-maintained space and are remarkably socialized. Their website is updated immediately when a puppy is sold, so you always know what pups are available. Although I did not end up purchasing a puppy from Playful Pets, I would not hesitate to go there again. read more

The young woman who is 19 wanted to play with the dog and wasn't allowed... I get it, she lives at home and may not be able to afford the dog. Well I am 32, finishing a PhD, work, live . Still profiled, still not greeted at the door, and the women up front clearly spoke under her breath a rude comment about me. I will do everything in my power to make sure that no one in my network ever purchases a dog from this place. Glad the owner is reading these, maybe the staff can finally be trained. We stopped in yesterday to look for a pup for my mother in law. Upon entrance, we were greeted sharply with not a "Hello", but rather "Please use the hand sanitizer before touching the dogs." The clerk gestures toward the sanitizer sitting on the counter. Ok, I get it. Puppies can get sick easily, I understand. Rude tone, but understood. Next, as I am looking around at the puppies, my fiancée went to ask if we could play with the adorable Shih Tzu that we were possibly considering for said mother in law. She was barked at by the dark haired store clerk with "Well, do you plan on buying the dog?!" Let me get this straight : am I expected to buy a car while glancing at it on the show room floor without knowing if we are made for each other? The same holds true for dogs - my Shih Tzu that I have at home PICKED ME, which is what animals in shelters so often do. How am I to know if this particular little pup that we wanted to see had a temperament that was conducive to a 64-year old woman potentially owning it? My fiancée and I LOVE dogs, and were turned off completely and eternally by the rude staff at "Playful" Pets. I use that word in quotes as apparently one should be prepared to break out the wallet if you even want to hold the dog. Kind of wishing that a larger shelter or state agency would come in and shut down these people down for good. They obviously do NOT care about the welfare of the animals, but rather, the almighty dollar - as evidenced by the "financing available" sign displayed conspicuously on their driveway facing window. Do yourselves a favor : go find a no-kill shelter like I did and pick up and play with potentially your future family member, an animal that is perfectly capable of loving you and your family forever, without having to encounter a venomous middleman like this store. read more

The two girls working could not have been nastier- from the moment we walked in, barely looked up, demanded "Purell your hands." And did not as us a single question, offer help, and acted annoyed whenever I asked something. I was told these dogs all came from "breeders" and when I asked where, a brunette (don't know her name- tattooed upper right arm) said "it says the state next to it." And when I asked specifically for where and from who in that state, she said "I'm not gonna list off our breeders." And acted like I had asked her to build me a plane and fly me th ere herself. the other employee, a blonde girl, was so rude I'm not even sure how to describe her. Additionally- each pup showed signs of overbreeding, under socialization, some seemed to be ill (one particular puppy showed symptoms of parvo). They have this redone facility but can't even afford to give the dogs toys or beds. It's a horrifying Mill disguised as a cute little store. Don't be fooled. One retriever puppy even had splayed back legs with no signs of casts or corrective measures. And one black doodle was PETRIFIED of people. It is also CLEAR that they lie about the ages. It says 2-3 months but some of them I would guess are barely a month. I know for a fact they have had more puppies die under suspicious circumstances than I care to know about. I have heard from two separate veterinary hospitals the horror stories of these employees, their owner, and the general mistreatment of their dogs. We recently purchased a Bulldog puppy here. We love her, but we wanted to let other potential customers know that we were sold a puppy from a mill, and that the employees and the owner misrepresented this fact. When we raised the issue with the owner, he treated us dismissively and disrespectfully. The breeder's name is Marlin Zimmerman. He has a "five star" certificate from the ACA from 2013, but this organization's certification practices are questionable (http://www.ahkennel.net/beware.htm). More recently, Zimmerman was put on the list of the "horrible hundred" breeders in the country by the Humane Society(http://www.humanesociety.org/news/news/2015/05/horrible-hundred-2015-problem-puppy-mills.html), and has been cited numerous times by the Pennsylvania Dog Law Advisory Board (http://www.nppmwatch.com/, http://www.philly.com/philly/blogs/pets/Problem-kennel-given-last-chance-to-clean-up-act.html, http://lancasteronline.com/news/local-kennel-has-animal-activists-howling/article_b51b82cf-ef5b-50b8-8dfd-41396e329ec4.html). We got two puppies there one year apart. The second puppy died within 8 months because of a disorder called pyromitra, (a very rare disorder for a puppy) and had a very weak immune system. Then the first one grew a tumor in his abdomen. We paid a $1000 to have it removed and it grew back to almost three times the original size in less than a year due to a congenital defect. We paid again to have it removed, but the vet said it would grow back. We are not negligent pet owners we take them for checkups frequently, follow all the recommendations and still ended up with a nightmare. DO NOT purchase an animal here, you will more than likely be left with a sick puppy and a broken heart. read more

I was there couple weeks ago to buy my second dog. The new manager there was not very nice, but what really got me was that she was playing youtube videos of dogs crying out loud with her cellphone- so that she can see the dogs react to it. I know this for a fact because I asked her myself why she's doing that. The dogs looked startled, even terrified- that's what seemed to cause one pup whine and she thought that was cute. I think that's a torture and absolutely not what someone who loves and supposed to care for pups ought to do. She was also very rude- yelling at one lab puppy who was obviously miserable and irritated from being stuck in a box for who knows how many weeks. Instead of letting her out to run around the store a bit (since no one else was in the store) she yelled at Daphne ( the dog's name) stating that she can't handle it right and keep it down. She yelled other words like not right now, stop it, etc. They get their dogs from puppy mills. You can tell by some of the extra small, unhealthy looking puppies who seemed have been separated from their moms a bit too early. It's a shame they hired someone like her- not that previous employees were any better. I didn't buy my pup from them nor I recommend anyone else to. I refuse to support their business, although I'd love to save the dogs from that place. read more

Walk in with small children and large dogs running around. My wife and I had a great experience getting our first puppy, a Wheaten Terrier, from Playful Pets! The owner and staff were extremely helpful and knowledgeable in answering any questions we had. Our Oliver had a skin condition when we got him, but Playful Pets has an amazing connection with a highly reputable veterinary practice which continued to see and treat Oliver at no additional cost to us. Playful Pets even called us about a week later to check on how Oliver was acclimating and how his skin condition was. My wife has never had a pet before, so this was a big step for her, and they did an awesome job reassuring her and answering any questions she had. We felt valued to Playful Pets and they were so kind and reassuring. Oliver has her wrapped around his paw, now. I highly recommend Playful Pets to anyone who is looking to add a fur baby to their family. read more

We bought a shitzu poodle from here in Oct. Best choice of our life. Max has been a great addition to our family. Loves people, good with dogs, and a very happy dog. No health or behavioral problems. I'm not sure where all these negative reviews are coming from. The owner and workers there were tremendously nice, let us play with dogs, were not forcing us to buy anything. The place was clean compared to other puppy places I've been, and the dogs all seemed healthy and happy. We walked in one time and the puppies were all running around playing. The workers care for the pups there from what we saw. Yes, it's expensive, but 8 months later our puppy was well worth that price. read more

My wife has a serious dog phobia. I was in Playful Pets yesterday and saw the cutest little dog who was born the day we got married (so it was meant to be). My wife agreed to go see Bubba (BIG step) and we went tonight. The woman working tonight was so friendly and patient and lets us take as much time as we wanted for my wife to get comfortable (even let her hide behind the counter till she was ready). I cannot thank you enough and really hope Bubba is still available when we are ready (hopefully soon). I know he would be out perfect first dog! I bought a beautiful Pomeranian puppy from Playful Pets in July 2019 which is a complete joy to have in my life but I feel it's my responsibility to give an honest review about my experience with my puppy. She was fine until about 4 months ago when she stopped walking on her back hind leg, took her to the vet then was recommended to see a specialist. After X-rays and a consult found out she was born with hip problems and NO KNEE CAPS! She just had surgery to correct the problem SHE WAS BORN with which cost over $5k. Be careful with your purchases from playful pets, seems to be an expensive puppy mill that passes their poor puppies off as healthy! I got my shih-poo from here. I've had him for about 4 months already and love him to death. He's my first dog ever and the woman was very informative, helpful and could b reached at all times. My dogs the best dog ever. He came with his first round of shots and has been an extremely healthy, happy, and playful puppy. The only reason I'm not giving it five stars is because he was very expensive (over a grand) and I heard you could get dogs for a lot cheaper with the same shots, but other thank that everyone was extremely informative and friendly. They have a finance option available for those who can't pay out of pocket and a one month warranty if anything happens to your dog. Although I did end up purchasing my little love bug from this store I have to say I was very disappointed in the service. I never write reviews but I felt this needed to be addressed as I have never experienced such poor behavior from staff (let alone it being such a joyous place to work). The two women at the front desk were beyond unfriendly and couldn't have been less enthused by our presence. It was like pulling teeth to ask questions of any sort, and of course we had many questions as we were looking for our newest and most lovable family member! My husband and I purchased our Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Moxie (formerly Spider) in October 2020 the week before Halloween. She is such a joy and we absolutely love having her. She was so tiny when we got her at 10 weeks old (about 2 lbs). She's now almost 9 months old and about 14 lbs. We took her to the vet 3 days after we brought her home. The vet told us she had Giardia (although her pet record indicated she received a preventative for this the week before), an open fontanel, and an umbilical hernia. Giardia is common in puppies and although I wish it was disclosed to us, it was treatable and gone in a week. No big deal. We didn't even notice she had it as her potty habits were "normal" from what we saw. But after her med we did see difference. The open fontanel is fairly common in small breeds and shouldn't be a huge concern unless there is an injury, but we were surprised to learn she has this. We are waiting for her to reach full growth and then will fix the hernia when she is spayed. It is so small and doesn't bother our girl, nor does it seem to be growing. And again, pretty common and nothing to worry about. The staff was very friendly, the store is beautiful and clean, and we were able to walk around and visit the other puppies in their den areas. We received info on the breeder, certified pedigree, and her pet record. We are happy with our experience at Playful Pets. This breed is prone to some serious genetic heath issues such as CM, SM, and Mitral Valve, so we pray daily that she will remain healthy. So far she is in good health according to our vet. No heart murmur. The price we paid seems reasonable based on what you would pay with a breeder considering this breed has become very popular and in high demand, not to mention a long wait due to many breeders genetically testing their dogs. And there is no guarantee something can't happen down the line. There isn't a day that goes by that we aren't grateful for having Moxie. *CONCERNING - PUPPY MILL "BREEDERS"???* ***To skip background story, see the last paragraph*** My bf and I saw that Playful Pets had a Dalmatian puppy, which is what we've been trying to find for a while. We played with the puppy for about 30 mins & both instantly fell in love with her. The staff was VERY helpful and answered all of the questions we had while we were there. We are aware of the health risks and temperament issues that can come along with the breed if they are not bred properly. Understandably, we wanted to make sure that puppy came from a reputable breeder. The staff showed us the Pedigree of the puppy and gave us the breeders name and USDA #. My boyfriend and I spent the rest of the day discussing the purchase of the puppy & our only concern ended up being the breeding/bloodline of the puppy. We spent LITERALLY hours trying to find info on the breeder. The only thing that came up when we searched his name were PUPPY MILL warning websites. I finally decided to call my cousin who is a well known and respected dog breeder who I knew could help me out. My cousin told me that she has seen MANY fake Pedigrees that may seem real to people that don't know about them. She said that does NOT mean the one I saw was fake! She told me to just ask Playful Pets to send it over to me. She would be able to tell immediately if it was real and she could look up the dogs on the Pedigree so that we could see exactly where the puppy came from. We had 2 options- 1. Ask Playful Pets for the Pedigree OR 2. Contact the breeder Because the Playful Pets staff had already been so helpful, we decided to call and ask them to send the Pedigree to us! We were absolutely SHOCKED at the reaction of the staff when we asked for this simple and REASONABLE request. The staff said that they already gave us the breeders name and USDA # and didn't understand why I needed anything else. I nicely said that we've been searching for hours to find the breeder and we couldn't find anything. The staff got very defensive and said that was because "the puppy didn't come from a puppy mill." I NEVER implied once that the puppy was from a puppy mill. Obviously the staff did not want to show us the puppies Pedigree, so we would have to talk to the breeder. When I asked if we could at least have the breeders contact information to call him, the staff got extremely angry and began to talk to me like I've never been talked to in my life (like a piece of trash or something, so extremely disrespectful) Remaining calm, I tried to explain myself better because maybe I was not being clear. I said "We can not find information on the breeder & most breeders have websites." The staff member on the phone said "OKAY!" and HUNG UP ON ME. ***We were ready to buy this adorable Dalmatian puppy. We spent all day making sure that this was the right decision for us. We even chose the puppies name! Again, the only concern we had was her bloodline because of Dalmatians temperament issues, deafness, and blindness if not bred well. When asked for the Pedigree, the staff got extremely defensive and said that I didn't need to see it. When asked for the "Breeders" contact information, the staff got NASTY with me and said that the puppy was not from a puppy mill (which I never EVER implied) The only information that came up when I searched the Breeders name was PUPPY MILL WARNING websites. The staff told me that this was NORMAL. This is NOT normal. Reputable breeders have websites. Reputable breeders do NOT come up in PUPPY MILL WARNING searches. If Playful Pets has nothing to hide then all of this information that I asked for should not have been a problem at all. My requests were not only understandable and reasonable, but they were NORMAL. If you're buying a puppy, you should want to know where they came from to make sure that they will be happy and healthy. Do NOT buy a puppy from Playful Pets. Do NOT support this establishment. They should not be in business. If my review is not enough, just read ALL of the other comments on here about the unhealthy puppies they sell, the lies that they tell, and the treatment that they give customers. **************************** All you need to do is read all of the other reviews on here. Also read how the owner RESPONDS disrespectfully to comments on here. Puppies are from puppy mills, they are sick, and they are over priced. Owner allows their employees to HANG UP on customers when they get asked questions they don't know how to answer. Maybe Playful Pet employees should spend less time trying to convince everyone that their puppies aren't from puppy mills, and more time taking care of the puppies. I have bought 3 dogs from Playful Pets, the most recently on 3-31-2021. I've tried rescue organizations, but resented the third degree that these organizations place upon the potential adopter. Also, they would not guarantee I would get the pet I wanted. So, as I said, I've bought 3 dogs from this shop and could not be happier .. especially since they offer a 2-year health guarantee. For my purchase on 3-31, my personal vet stated the puppy was in excellent shape and commented upon the exquisite markings on the animal. I was floored, since that is the most my vet has stated in the 20+ years I have visited his clinic. High praise, as far as I am concerned!!! read more

I normally don't give low reviews, but this place deserves one. 1) In reading the reviews, if a person gives a low review, the owner jumps right in and says that they are wrong and puts them down. If you are a business owner, you should be able to handle a little bit of criticism, without jumping all over the reviewer. (This brings the review down to the lowest.) 2) My family and I were at your location yesterday. Nothing wrong with the area that the puppies are kept, the staff was quite nice and the puppies actually seemed to be in good health. (This brought the review up two stars.) 3) DON'T misrepresent what the dogs are! We were seriously thinking of getting "Cindy Lou Who" from you. It clearly states that the dog is a miniature Schnauzer. But, it also states that the dog is registered with the ACHC. This is the American Canine Hybrid Club. A 'hybrid', in case you didn't know, is a mixed breed. This pup is beautiful, but not worth half the price of what is being asked. (This drops the review down another star.) 4) If going here, be prepared to spend a LOT of money for a dog. Outrageous pricing. (I'm sticking with 2 stars.) 5) The other reviews state that the dogs come from puppy mills. I don't know how anyone would know where the dogs come from, so I don't take any of this into account when reviewing. I think I'll go find a local person who brings the dogs up in their home and breed them there, instead of a business who has pups shipped to them for resale. This is the the worst, most deceitful, careless, God awful place I have ever been to. I was tricked into financing the puppy I adopted, being told the interest rate was 14% when its actually 189%. My $1200 puppy is going to cost me $3300. They also didn't tell me his thumb nails were permanently removed, which could result in broken ankles. And there's more!!!! He was given his first round of shots too early so we were stuck with the bill of an extra round. AND FINALLY, HE HAD KENNEL COUGH WHILE AT PLAYFUL PETS BUT THEY NEVER TOLD US ABOUT THAT. I'm going to start this review by saying I've been stopping into Playful Pets a few times a year since I was really little. I'm now almost 30. It used to be mostly trips to satisfy my love of dogs and puppies, but over the years, things have gotten more strict it seems (no picking up the puppies, no playing with them unless you intend to buy, etc). This, however, is not a complaint, because I understand there are reasons for the change in rules. Maybe they used to have these rules in place back then too, but things may have been more lax. I can't say for sure. Over the years, we've purchased 3 dogs from here. One was a collie that I was too young to remember well, but the past two, which my sister and I bought when we were in our teens, were little mutts with the most wonderful of personalities. My little girl, Sophie, passed away recently after 13 1/2 years. She was the perfect dog, my best friend, and I wouldn't have traded her for all the riches in the world. I'll never forget the day that I saw her there at Playful Pets, there were countless other puppies in the store and in the pen with her, but I couldn't have cared less about any of them the second I saw her. I want to thank Playful Pets, because without them, I wouldn't have met my little buddy (and our other pup, Juliette, of course) who helped me through chronic illness and many other hardships. I see a lot of negative reviews on here and I can't say for sure whether or not they hold much merit. Maybe they do, maybe they don't. But I implore whoever is in charge of replying to them as Playful Pets, do not respond negatively to each and every one of them. It's business ethics 101. It's like adding a giant can of gasoline and some TNT to the fire. 99% of the negative reviews should be ignored. If you feel the need to reply, do so calmly without insulting or coming off as rude or nasty. I understand many of them may be false claims or whathaveyou, but in the end, you're only making the business look bad. If I was Joe Schmoe and had never patronized your business before, I wouldn't soley based on your responses to people- NOT on the negative reviews. That being said, I wish you all the success in the future, and I hope you continue helping people find their furry companions :) read more
