I was sharply reminded of home. And of good stiff drinks. Which brings me to Walker's. Metaphysically, that is. Because there's really never enough time in my crazy schedule to drive to Greensboro (incidentally, where my family lives and who I've only seen three times this year because of said schedule). My days at Walker's were many. And simpler. And boy, do I miss them. Had I known about life after grad school then, I would have appreciated the small-yet-reliable satisfaction that comes from being a regular at your neighborhood dive. The drinks are strong, and cheap. The jukebox has all the classics. The bar flies are a mix of funny, crazy, and kind -- but you know each of them by name. The bartender greets you like a friend. When the most of my troubles involved writing a paper on the use of viral marketing tactics employed by Snakes on a Plane, and nearly every other night meant a stop at Walker's with my roommate, it was almost an age of innocence in some ways. Our bartender, LT, was so much fun. Every drink was spot on. An espresso martini for my wife and a bold old fashioned for me. On top of that, LT clearly knows his stuff when it comes to both cocktails and bourbon knowledge. I added a 1oz neat pour of 12yr Weller. Let's just say this place is a Weller lover's dream. The owner is a huge Weller fan and keeps the lounge stocked with pretty much every bottle imaginable. Something that's nearly impossible to find in Greensboro. And then there's the showstopper: a Weller Millennium bottle sitting on display. At $600 for a 1oz pour, it's pure eye candy for me. I'll just admire it from one of the comfy couches or large chairs and keep my wallet happy. Whenever we're looking for a classy evening out in downtown Greensboro, Muddle will be our first stop every time.
