Once again knowing that it'll be fantastic night of great music and dancing. I brought a friend w me last night, and now Flat Iron will have another regular customer. My friend loved the bar, and was highly satisfied w the sound. Almost everybody was on the dance floor dancing the night away. Both bands created an amazing atmosphere. The bartenders were outstanding as usual. I was having too much fun that I lost my phone for a few minutes. I didn't check in last night, because I was living and enjoying the moment. A night to remember for sure!

This was my first time inside this dive bar and music venue, even though it is very close to my house. It has been located here since the early 90s, but apparently was shut down for a bit then revamped and reopened in 2019. I always heard it had a bit of a rough reputation, but it was clear some nice upgrades were done under its new ownership. It has a distinct vibe, a bit of a retro feel with neon lights and a jukebox. A mix of bar stools, a big couch, and they added tables around the stage for the music performance. Lots of space to just stand around and socialize. There are some tables outside where you can hang as well. Overall everything was in good condition, but I would say the ladies bathroom needs some love (the door was off on my stall). The bar inside is very prominent and the bartenders nice. They also have some crazy cheap daily bar specials. I was there on a Sunday and I could get a house whiskey and a Bud-light for $6. Obviously, the rail whiskey part of this deal was not great, but I got it as a mix drink with some Ginger Ale and it was fine enough. Apparently The Flat Iron is one of Greensboro's oldest music venues. The stage is small, but can fit a small band for sure. It was perfect for an intimate performance with one or two musicians. I went to see a concert of my friend Ric Robertson. He is now based in Louisiana, but grew up in the area. I thought this was a great space for his style. Ric is a talented singer, song writer, and musician so I felt I got to appreciate all three in this smaller venue. Some at the bar didn't particularly care about the music and were talking during his performances, which was a bit annoying but just kind of goes with the scene. I'm glad I finally came here and happy to see that this dive-ish bar and music venue lives on (and seemingly has improved). It's no frills, but a local staple and an important place to exist for local performers and beyond.

Most have been underwhelming, or inconsistent at best. Stumble Stilskins isn't bad. The burger is the smash burger style -- not always ideal, but pretty good when done nicely, as it is here. "Crispy on the edges" it specifies in the menu, and that is accurate. The meat is also well-seasoned and not dry. Excellent! The cheese is the proper yellow American. The fries, while not hand-cut (which is fine, in this case), have been fried nicely, in fresh tasting oil, and seasoned generously. So much attention to seasoning is really appreciated. The fatal flaw of the burger is that it is apparently served on a "brioche bun." The bun is large, agonizingly dense, and weirdly sweet. In particular, when it's doing battle with the slim carefully structured and seasoned smash burger patties, the heaviness and sweetness are extremely oppressively overpowering. Now, you may say, why didn't I just not eat the bun (which would've been good for the flavor, texture, and my caloric intake)? Well, if you are, as I apparently am, genetically 2/3 sheepdog, you have no choice but to rapidly eat everything in front of you. The atmosphere isn't bad. There's not much to it -- classic bar, but neat and tidy, with TVs and little tables here and there. Not really any nooks and crannies, even in the dimmer half of the restaurant. It would probably be even better if you were drunk. The bathroom was notably clean -- though I can't imagine how chaotic it gets when the place is crowded, since it's a single-occupancy. If you're seated at one of the high top tables, be prepared to be uncomfortably close to the mustachioed open mouth of what I think is Danny McBride.

Mark, our server, carefully explained the gluten free options and inquired about the dangers of cross contamination. He is a friendly, helpful, and clearly experienced server. We opted to drink Bodega Shop Fruit Punch with 10mg THC, and a specially made Lemon Drop. Our meals were delicious: Smash Burger (no bun), Steak Sando, and the Buffy Chicken Sandwich. We were there at 4pm, so not so crowded yet, but we loved the early 2000s music!

I was sharply reminded of home. And of good stiff drinks. Which brings me to Walker's. Metaphysically, that is. Because there's really never enough time in my crazy schedule to drive to Greensboro (incidentally, where my family lives and who I've only seen three times this year because of said schedule). My days at Walker's were many. And simpler. And boy, do I miss them. Had I known about life after grad school then, I would have appreciated the small-yet-reliable satisfaction that comes from being a regular at your neighborhood dive. The drinks are strong, and cheap. The jukebox has all the classics. The bar flies are a mix of funny, crazy, and kind -- but you know each of them by name. The bartender greets you like a friend. When the most of my troubles involved writing a paper on the use of viral marketing tactics employed by Snakes on a Plane, and nearly every other night meant a stop at Walker's with my roommate, it was almost an age of innocence in some ways. Here-here to the neighborhood watering hole!
