We actually killed time at our hotel in New Bern so we could have lunch at Moore's before driving to Kill Devil Hills. We knew we could not check into our condo anyway until later in the day. We had been in New Bern 2-1/2 years earlier and were unable to find time for a meal at Moore's. This time I was determined not to miss it. We each ordered a barbecue sandwich which comes with slaw. The cost is modest for these nice sized sandwiches. These are a good value and as I write this review a few days later, I could use one right now. I really enjoyed this pure, clean chopped pork. Their sauce is very simple vinegar with some red pepper flakes but not much if any salt and certainly no sweetness. The meat came pretty well dressed with the sauce but I did splash a little more on. I would have liked a little more slaw on a sandwich this size. For future reference, I would just order a side of slaw and adjust it. If I lived in New Bern, I would have one for lunch one day a week for sure. This is classic Eastern NC barbecue. I also ordered a brisket sandwich. I really did not need this much food, but wanted to see what they were putting out. My advice based on one try is stick to the delicious pork. I admire the old North Carolina joints that focus on one or two things. In this case I cannot give a glowing report on the brisket. You know how sometimes in judging competitions they will sometimes throw out the low and the high and average the remainder? In this case I am throwing out the low, the brisket. I rate Moore's on what they are in business for and that is the pork. The brisket was just roast beef and not really very good roast beef at that. It did not have much beefy flavor. It was not smoked and I cannot see how it is a beef barbecue. It was not tender and had a significant portions of fat included. It was served on a bun which I did not eat with some tomato based sauce. A strong four stars for the pork at Moore's. We won't discuss the beef any further, leave it to the Texans. read more

Stopped in for Lunch 10/26/21. To my wife and I this was the same as a Smithfield's Chicken and Barbeque but they sold sea food here as well. Wife got the chicken and said it tasted the same as Smithfield's but was very greasy here and left her stomach feeling upset the rest of the day. I got a barbeque plate and ditto, tasted the same. The baked beans are better at Smithfield's as they remind me of Big Johns Beans (yes I know I'm dating myself with that reference!) I don't like the hush puppies at either place but at Moore's they are way to sweet and do not taste like old fashioned corn meal hush puppies. Wife tasted them and said the same thing, way to sweet. The eastern Carolina style vinegar dip goes to Moore's as it has a more authentic taste than Smithfield's. All in all, as the old man in a Christmas story said about the wine, " It's not bad, but it's not good either." I don't see any return visits to Moore's in our future. read more

We're just in town for the day, and wanted to enjoy some of the local cuisine (and gorge ourselves on delicious BBQ). The only disappointment was that ribs are only available on Saturday. It was more than made up for by the BBQ chicken (and pork!). Also, there was a moment of confusion when I was ordering and she said to me "it comes with fries, hushpuppies, coleslaw", and I was trying to decide which I wanted. Silly of me to assume she meant it only came with one, not all three. Thankfully, the latter was the case as they were all great. As was the side of pork I threw in as well. The pork was of the shredded variety, in a little basket, and was SO tender and well spiced (not spicy) and delicious. My friend seriously enjoyed his pork sandwich. Definitely a satisfying and delicious meal. And we were sent on our way with tiny bottles of sauce (perfect for the airport!). read more

Had the oyster plate, which is deep fried, breaded oysters, hush puppies and two sides, which I chose baked beans and cole slaw. Came to just over $20 with no drink. The cole slaw was way too sweet. The baked beans were ok but taste like they came out of a can. The hushpuppies didn't have much flavor and neither did the breading on the oysters. Had a kid come by table to table asking how everything was. I answered, "meh, it's ok." His response was, "just ok? Psht." and then laughed as he went to uncaringly ask the next table. Ordered a half pound of brisket, half pound pork, half dozen hush puppies, and a sweet tea. I'm from Texas and I only ordered it because the locals I was with raved about it. I should have known better. It came basically chopped and drowning in sauce. I asked for burnt ends. I guess the guy who took my order didn't know what that was. I can't tell you how the brisket tasted but the sauce was average. It is not customary to put sauce on brisket by default. Lesson learned. Now that I got that out of the way let's move on to what was good. The pork was delicious. It had a good sauce. Not quite as spicy as Wilbur's so I had to add some hot sauce. That's okay because it's easy to add spice and hard to take away. Cornbread was delicious. They gave me way more than I ordered. No complaints here. Sweet tea was top notch. My Mom and I highly recommend Moore's as a MUST experience bbq joint! We are from Maryland and were here for vacation. Sadly we are in the car on the way home but had heard from so many people that Moore's Olde Tyme BBQ was the most exceptional bbq in the area, so we just HAD to stop in to get some! First off, the staff is so nice and even followed me out to the car to help me. What service! Not only is the staff amazing but the owner Jason is so kindhearted, it left a real impression on us. I give them 5 stars but I'd give them so many more if I could! The food is outstanding, the staff are all very friendly and helpful and the owner is one of the nicest guys ever. I was in the mood for something different for my ride home instead of a sandwich and fries so iI thought I would give Moore's a chance. I saw that they had crab cakes and being that I am a crabmeat fanatic a price of $15 usually has real crab meat in it. I really wanted a side of shrimp and one crabcake and I asked if I could mix. They said that they will just add a side of shrimp. Well, after paying an additional $7.99 for shrimp and a tom of hushpuppies that I don't even eat I had a lot of fried food. The only thing that was good about the meal was the shrimp. They were pretty good for a drive thru. The crab cakes were not Maryland style at all. . To be clear, they didn't claim to be though. I couldnt taste crab but just all filler. The cole slaw and baked beans were not my style either. I actually threw them away. The restaurant was packed and the service was good. Someone needs to speak to staff about the way they address customers. We just left the drive through. My husband was trying to place an order. He asked for no salt to be put on his fries. The staff member answered with an attitude that the fries already come with salt. When my husband tried to inquire further another lady jumps in and rudely and loudly stated again that the fries already have salt on them. What he was trying to ask in the first place was if he could get them without any salt being added to the fries which we have done for YEARS! We refused to place an order. We have ALWAYS ordered our fries this way. The last time we were there they got our order wrong twice. We were very nice about it and waited forever to even get the food. My husband had to go inside to be met with nasty attitudes. Our time is being wasted. How can you have an attitude when you are the one that messed up? The BBQ 3.5 - decent but lacked smoke. The hush puppies 3 stars - lacking in salt & got soaked w coleslaw liquid rendering then soggy. Lastly the real misstep is the meal -- the potato salad was so sweet I found it inedible. Really awful. A few tweaks could really change things but as it stands 3 stars is all I can really give. ------------------- This is NOT Moore's BBQ. This is a sad chain restaurant replacement for a New Bern icon. I don't blame Tommy & hope he really enjoys his retirement. The new ownership inexplicably purchased a successful business & then has set out to systematically destroy it. The food isn't terrible but there's nothing outstanding. The BBQ isn't as good, the service isn't as good, many menu items are nowhere to be found. But at least the prices are higher. read more

I stopped in Jacksonville, NC to get the 12 piece family deal to go. Got it and drove 30 minutes to our destination only to find out we didn't get the 12 piece. We got 4 wings, 2 legs, 1 thigh and 1 breast. Yes I trusted but I should have checked. The chicken was under everything else. I called as soon as we got to our location and spoke to the manager. All she said is that they must have gotten the order mixed up. I sure hope that's the case. She said I can come back to get the missing 4 pieces. So 30 minutes back? I asked if I can pick it up later to which she agreed. So once again, 30 minutes to Moores which was not on our way home but not it was more principal. Arrived at the store and waited until she was done talking. She asked if I was the one from the phone, I said yes. She asked what pieces I wanted and I said since I was loaded with wings and legs none of those please. She handed me a box in a bag and that was it. No I'm sorry, our bad, nothing. I work in customer service also and will say when a mistake is made and obviously our fault i usually give a bit more than a box in a bag. Hellllooooooo Eastern NC BBQ! I asked for a traditional NC BBQ-style meal from a local colleague, he immediately said this was the place to go. He couldn't have been more correct. As Marvin Gaye so wisely said, "ain't nothin' like the real thing." This is the real thing, traditional NC BBQ in all of it's goodness. I ordered the pork plate which came with cole slaw and hush puppies. The pork was very tender and finely chopped with just the right amount of seasoning. The hush puppies were fried golden brown and nice and soft on the inside. The sauce was outstanding, but if you are looking for what most people associate as BBQ sauce (think KC), go elsewhere. Here, it's essentially vinegar with red pepper. It's also delicious. I tried the pork with just the sauce, with just hot sauce (50-50 mix of Tobasco and BBQ sauce), and with both. Using both was the best of the bunch, although just the BBQ sauce was outstanding as well. My only beef (pun intended) was there was no brisket on the menu and you can only get ribs on Saturday. But for a place to be around this long, they clearly don't need it. It's pretty darn inexpensive, lunch and beverages for 5 of us was around $42. read more

This establishment is is far BELOW average, don't say that roasted chicken with bbq sauce is bbq chicken and the brisket was very gritty. My wife and I have lived in New Bern for two-and-half-years. Last night my wife, her father, and I went to Moore's under its' new ownership. I read a review that said the scallops were good and I wanted to order some, but I found out that they were breaded and fried. Why ruin delicious scallops by breading and frying it? I continued to look at the menu while the other two placed their orders. I ordered the Number 4. When it came to our table, it had two pieces of fried chicken, pulled pork, hush puppies, potato salad, and green beans. I was shocked that there was fried chicken on my plate. Why would I want fried chicken at a BBQ place?! So I guess it was my fault but I was also never asked which kind of chicken I wanted when I placed my order. I was told by the lady that worked the register that the green beans were delicious. They were okay but tasted like the ones from the can that my friend's mother used to make growing up. The whole time I ate, I was taunted by the original "Moore's B-B-Q" sign that hangs in dining area. My food was okay if you enjoy grease and blandness. My wife opened her BBQ pulled pork sandwich and found that it was nothing more than pulled pork on a bun. She said the lady at the register asked if she wanted slaw on it and she replied yes. When I saw my wife's sandwich, I asked where was the BBQ sauce at on her BBQ pulled pork sandwich? She said she didn't know. My wife went up to the register to get a hot sandwich with slaw and sauce as the one she had was cold and incorrect. The lady brought her another sandwich which also was missing slaw! Third time was the charm I guess! My father-in-law's chicken also came out fried instead of BBQ. He says he DID specify that he wanted BBQ chicken. They took his plate and brought him BBQ chicken. He was happy. Long story short, they perfer to fry food which is cheap and fast. Forget low and slow and made with love. You have to ask for BBQ at a "BBQ" place which is super lame. Smithfield's is cheaper and the same quality. In fact, they sell the same peacan pie in the plastic triangle. Nothing special at Moore's. It will be interesting to see them stay in business when their competitors do the same thing only cheaper. If they want to have long-term viability, they should be a real BBQ place as New Bern doesn't have it yet. read more

We've been wanting to try this place for a while, now We have. Not sure what all the hype is about. The ordering process is a little odd. There's no line just walk up to a counter and hope someone asks you want you want. You might have to make eye contact first. Then you convey your order to the cashier who apparently has her own interpretation of the menu and hasn't learned the art if smiling or customer service. Our $17 lunch couldn't even elicit a 'thanks' let alone a 'I hope you enjoy it' or 'come back again'. I had the BBQ chicken platter 1/4 dark which was ok. The skin was great and the sauce wasn't bad but the chicken must have been a little anorexic and apparently sat on the grill too long as it was a tad dry, thankfully there was extra sauce. Mike had the beef brisket platter, it was priced about normal for brisket but was VERY fatty. Normally I like that but it really detracted from the overall flavor which was already a little bland, then you get the fatty after taste on top of it. Both meals came with lots of trimmings, French fries, hush puppies and cole slaw, which btw was just cabbage and a few specks of carrots, wasn't totally horrible but certainly not memorable. read more

Tommy Moore and his family and team have been making some of the best barbecue for generations now they've been making barbecue since 1945. And to top that they hold the Guinness Book of World Records for the largest barbecue slaw sandwich it weighed over 1000 pounds wow. One of the all-time great traditional eastern NC BBQ joints sits on the side of Highway 17 north of Jacksonville, NC, on the south edge of New Bern. It's shredded pork BBQ with the vinegar based sauce, just the way the good lord intended it to be: NOT AWASH in vinegar, just a light, barely there tinge. Hush puppies done right, good cole slaw, delicious, refreshing, properly sweet, not nauseatingly overly sweet (You hear me Smithfield's!). BBQ chicken, fried local shrimp and flounder, and fried trout, fish sandwich and shrimp burger pretty much round out the menu. People will drive a fair distance for Moore's barbeque - and it's well worth it, P.S. We were traveling thru town and my husband wanted bbq. He saw the sign and we had to stop. Food came out quick. Server ( J'Quan) was very polite. He kept drinks filled and plates cleared. My husband got the bbq special of the month. Pulled pork, 2 sides and hush puppies. He said the pulled pork was good. Better than some but not the best he has had. Slaw was good. Bake beans were just ok. I had the fried chicken with green beans. Chicken was really good. Large pieces. Green beans had too much pepper for my taste. I can always add more at the table but I can't take it out. I don't like that. My son got the chicken tender meal. Chicken tenders were huge. He had the Mac and cheese also but it was not real cheesy. He loved those tenders with the kens honey mustard dipping sauce. I would have gave this place 4 or 5 stars had I not walked back up to the counter to get the dipping sauce and over heard the boy taking orders talking to an elderly couple that where confused about the menu. He was not nice. Instead of trying to help them understand he snapped at them. This was not needed. Had that been my parents or grandparents I would have been pissed. The manager did step up behind him after hearing him snap at them. I believe cashier (#11 on receipt) needs training on compassion for our seniors. Would I eat here again if in the area? Let me start by saying the service was wonderful. Everyone who we encounter was kind and courteous. The food however is mediocre at best. Everything either tasted bland or drenched in vinegar. There was no balance to the flavors. Green beans were salty, hush puppies were dry. BBQ and ribs were nothing special. All five people in our party were disappointed with the meal. I heard this place was amazing under previous ownership but it is now a chain with a drive- thru and essentially lost its charm. The food also came out almost immediately after we sat down and was barely warm. You could tell it was all just sitting there waiting to be served. I would not recommend this place. read more
