I appreciate being able to bring a stray in, far too often I see loose dogs running around town. However today when I brought in a dog who has a leash TIED around his neck ripped off handle.... A girl with glasses and curly hair (I should have got her name) asks me who's Jose Gonzales ?! I said who's that? She replied you didn't take this dog from Jose? Again, I said what??? Who's Jose??? Long story short she says you'd be surprised what people do.... So ma'am are you insinuating that I took this dog from his owner??? Her intake skills suck, you can ask questions and do your job but do it right. Clearly you have info I do not, you say this dog matches a description to some guy then call Him! Don't ask me silly questions.

    Belgian Malnois blue collar

I came in because I had picked up a stray Belgian malnois from being hit on a busy crossing streets of Cactus & Indian Ave. As a dog lover with several dogs at home already I was unable to keep her & was obviously distraught about having to bring her into a shelter. I took her to a vet prior to see if she was microchipped & she was but with unregistered owners. I let the lady in the front know of this & she was very rude & acting as if I was leaving my own dog. Before I left she said "are you sure this isn't your dog it seems pretty attached it you" even after I gave her the piece of paper with the microchip number attached torn off from a piece of paper literally from the vet. God forbid people have hearts lady & cry when they drop of stray. Get a better attitude when people are only trying to help. Anyways if anyone is missing their Belgian Malnois she is currently here.

almost 2 years later and a bath every week, I am always telling people to check out online listings from this shelter

almost 2 years later short version: please be aware that this a high volume kill shelter. it not some rescue that requires applications. they have an online datatbase. Its highly likely, You will likely have to pick up your new pet within 24 hours because they need to make space for others. There was some miscommunication about this originally. You may find breeds here that in LA or OC might have a huge waitlist. its worth the drive. the animal clinic next door is solid/professional, trust them but communicate about extras My experience: I was looking online for a rescue shih tzu because I needed a dog of a certain size and temperment (apartment life) . I am familiar with the breed. In my search, An online ad came up saying this dog was a very sweet boy ( unusual the dog had an online note). I will say his # ad did not show up on their shelter website. It said at risk as of tuesday. I called them and found out Tues was just his adoption day. He'd been in shelter for 10 days ( the hold they had) I decided it was worth the drive. Now orginally I was told over the phone that I could pay/adopt Tuesday and pick him up Friday (because of nurtering mught take a day or two and I had a work meeting Thursday...they said I could pay an extra day...this was WRONG info) When you go it, there is a big dog area and a separate room for smaller dogs- lots of barking and sadness but you may come out with a new family member. Once he became available, we met for a couple minutes. now the worker when I met him was curt about me taking him next day- but After I thought about it, I understand it was because she was making space to save another dog. I can't be mad about that. What it did mean though was basically 4-5 hours of travel (2.5 hours day one to meet him) and the next day the pick up was at 5 pm ( another 3.5 hours roundtrip) So I saved $ and his life but it was a situation were sweat (my time) equity was required/involved. He has been so worth it! also the clinic fixed his umblicial hernia for like $25 when he was under for nutering ( cheapest surgery ever!) last note, make sure to ask the clinic for pain medication and a cone. I thought it was included in the fee but it was not. My boy had no issues with healing later on during his pick up at the clinic met many happy families with new pets. I did look online for his owners for 3 months just in case there was a grandma who didn't know technology but then he was mine :)

    We adopted a new pup!

Overall the staff here is great BUT there are some inefficiencies in their processes which can lead to frustration and people walking out without ever seeing the adoptable animals. We drove up from San Diego to see a specific animal. We called twice, the day before we got there and they day we were driving up, to get info on the animal and make sure the animal was still available before we made the drive. We went to see an 8 year old Rottie who was named "Big Easy" who's owner was put into hospice and the dog was sent to the shelter. The post said he needed to be adopted by 2/15 or we know what happens next. We wanted to save the big guy and spoil him the next few year of his life. When we got to the shelter we had to wait in a fairly long line and there as only one person working the desk. My husband was told BEFORE we could see the animals we had to fill out an application just to SEE the dogs! Ok whatever, I'll comply. BUT we had to wait in this line that took 15-20 to get the application. They didn't have them out for people to grab and fill out. So I wait, fill it out and they tell me to hold onto it! Again, no reason to fill it out ahead of time. Insert eye roll here. Paperwork is filled out, I still haven't seen the dog, but I know his ID number and tell them who I want to see. The handler (not sure what they call them) says, "I'm not taking out that dog. No way!" I'm said, "what? Why not?" She said, "he's shown signs of aggression and I'm not comfortable taking him out." I then replied, "why the hell is that not in the notes? We called twice to find out everything we could about this animal before we drove up here and NO ONE mentioned aggression." She then agreed to take my husband back to see the dog in the kennel but not take him out while I waited in the lobby with our daughter and other dog we brought for the meet n greet. Within a couple of minutes a very nice security guy walked out and apologized to us about the confusion. He said he'd take the dog out if I wanted him too but the dog is aggressive. He put my daughter, dog and I in the meeting room and he went to assist my husband with the dog. My husband came back rather quickly and said the dog was aggressive while in the kennel so we weren't comfortable doing the meet n greet. They did state they had a rottie mix they'd like to show us if we were interested and we figured why not, we had made the drive, might as well.... Guess what? We adopted him! The adoption process was pretty quick and easy once we made a selection. Only changes I'd like to recommend are, 1. update the notes so when people call to inquire about an animal they have all the information. 2. Put the applications out where people can grab them and not wait in line to get one. Other than that, it's clear the staff here cares about the animals, they have good prices and a bunch of dogs and cats that need to find their forever home so PLEASE ADOPT!

I heard about their amazing adoption program online where for national pet adoption week they were waiving all fees and would fix the animals for free! We went down on a Thursday to look at the cats, found an adorable little boy we wanted to adopt. We put in the application and in 24 hours he was ours! They fixed him, gave him his first vaccines, and we took him home Friday afternoon! We love him so much, thank you for this wonderful program!

Staff was incredibly rude and acted like we were bothering them when we were trying to adopt a dog. Almost like it's their job???

(I do understand and respect prioritizing the mental health of the cats, but I'm sure the cats, especially the adults, would prefer a compromise, like being required to fill out a one page form on the spot before meeting). Every serious adopter that goes into a pet store and sees one of this organization's animals that they are interested in adopting and is told they have to go through this and this and this step before they can even interact with the cat and know if the personality is a fit. Everyone loses out. In my experience, even if you do go through all the steps, they won't call you back, and a cat that could have had a home I know had that opportunity taken from them because of the seemingly righteous or superior attitude of the rescue people. They surely know how many people go in and out of those cat and kitten rooms at the Animal Friends of the Valley shelter. Having a few people go in one at a time to meet one particular cat, I don't feel, is any more dangerous or unhealthy for the cat than them losing the opportunity to be adopted and eventually being put down. I just don't understand rescues like this. If you're too small to actually help, then let somebody else do it.

Mindy provided a very personable, warm and extremely responsive service, made every effort to respond to my inquiry on Adopt-A-Pet and approving my application as well as just answering my questions and chatting with me about my potential cat baby's personality traits and his background story. She responded to emails as late as 11PM on a weekend and her demeanor was always welcoming and reassuring, like an old, caring friend. Mindy's words and actions convey that she truly truly love all of her rescued cat babies and she only wants what's best for them and she works extremely hard to find them good homes. I was very sad that neither cat babies from her rescue matched the particular personality I was looking for (I was trying to fill this big hole in my heart with the tragic loss of a stray cat named Cookie I cared for) and I really wished that given all the hard work she and her daughter put into, I'd adopt either Teddy or Khabib. Despite these big, affectionate sweet boys were not the best match I was searching for, I don't think any less of them, I sincerely hope they will find their forever home they deserve and I cannot be more grateful for Mindy's time, patience and understanding she's extended me and my family. If I had more capacity for an additional cat baby in the future after finding THE ONE, Mindy and her rescue is the first place I'd check out. No one came out to see if my cat was seriously contagious or if we were just mistaking it for allergies. Yeah, it sucks to wait, but it's the fact there was no communication and we had to call and ask for updates. Not once were we told we were waiting for the only contagion room. If we had that information we would be a bit more understanding. Overall, this experience left a really bad taste, and I'm not sure I will be returning.
