Bucket list of Foodie Adventures! Shoutout to the Iron Chef Legend and his team. This venue brings together class, culture, and passion! There is depth to every aspect of the cuisine. The first thing that I did was call for a reservation and check the dress code. There's also an online reservation option. The suggested dress code is business casual, but I was told that it was not enforced. Since we were traveling in crazy wet and windy weather conditions and we had driven @2 hours to get to our destination and meet our daughter for dinner, we had dressed nice, warm, and comfortable. We had clothes that were just good enough to make the cut. We had time to tell her about the dress code, but we kept the venue a surprise! Our daughter was so excited to join us! The Uber driver got us there on time, but the venue signage was a little hard to see in such rainy weather. The inside has clean lines and design. Color changing booths were amazingly effective! 7 colors every 7 minutes. We arrived with the aqua blue color and it almost looked like a seascape or Superman's ice cave. Each color was like a different flavor accent to our senses. Our server was very personable, professional, and knowledgeable. We continued our adventure with appetizers of hot stone wagu beef and hot king crab legs. A bottle of Pelegríno water and a bottle of hot house saki. The saki had a slight sweetness, a gentle silky texture, and dissipated inside my mouth like a cotton candy like butterfly kiss. Yummmm. There was an introduction of every single delicious item that was served to include cooking instructions such as touching the wagyu beef on only one side for 10 seconds or both sides per preference. Salt, pepper, and a delicious dark dipping sauce was also served as an enhancer as preferred. This was as magically delicious as I had imagined! Soft, unctuous, and life changing! Bravo! An event just on it's on. Then these crab legs were just as mind blowing! Soft, luscious, and decked out with little bitty beads of roe and topped with spicy spicy mayo type sauce! I was not ashamed of licking all that goodness off my crab leg shell then using the shell to scoop up any of the precious bits off the plate. My husband knew that I would never forgive myself if I didn't order the Morimoto Ramen. And he was spoiling me and he ordered! The broth has so much depth and balance! It was as my daughter described " an entire Thanksgiving meal in one spoonful of broth" even to compare it to a Willy Wonka everlasting gobstopper... the noodles were so tender and perfectly chewy!!! And there was a generous amount of tender chicken! Drop the mic!! Then came an amazing dish of chef's choice sashimi and sushi! This was an absolute piece of art! Every nibble delicious! Pickled ginger and spicy wasabi also there to enhance or palate cleanse. And believe me, this is the clear your brain out type of wasabi! My husband LOVED it!! We even packed any left over wasabi for him. I agree with the other reviewers on how wonderful the fish selection is! Almost full, but wanting to continue the journey, out came the curry Katsu ! We had crunchy chicken atop of well-balanced curry! I disappeared fast. As I was pleasantly full, I got up to go washroom... I came back to a table full of side dishes like mashed potato balls, spinach wrapped up like sushi, a bowl of mushrooms, and a bowl of wasabi rice! I nibbled to sample the treasures. Most of the appeal of this restaurant for me came from sitting at the sushi counter and watching the chef prepare everything. I'm not a huge sashimi fan, but my husband is, and he reported only good things from the seasonal selection. I really enjoyed the rolls that I chose, especially the yellowtail. The star of the show for me though, was the chicken katsu curry. We kept smelling it as it came out of the kitchen and couldn't resist. It was so warm and hearty and flavorful. Went here for an anniversary and it was absolutely magical. We let them know about our occasion and we got a glass of delicious champagne! We split the waygu dumplings and they were one of the best things I have ever eaten! Not even exaggerating the flavors were delicious- we almost ordered more! I got the ramen, which was honestly not my favorite. Very basic, was hoping for more. Still yummy! My partner got the chicken katsu curry which was so good and came in the coolest presentation! We shared his side of potatoes which were so amazing! I couldn't believe the flavor and the crunch! Not to mention the sauce. Due to lack of things to do, I've really dug deep to finish these drafts of venues that aren't just in another city from the past, but also places that don't even exist anymore. Here, it's good to see morimoto still stands! I remember morimoto for two random things: where I first learned what 'omakase' meant, and where I heard the word 'buri bop.' To this day, I haven't tried either, but both originated from here (for me). Typical flashy Starr establishment, where sparkle will always get my short-term attention. First off, for the artistic vibe, you are greeted by a giant black...blob at the front by the hostess stand. Onto the dining room, it's designed into a long, rectangular shape with no room to hide. Two-seaters line the walls on either side, while tables for larger parties were in the middle of the restaurant. Phallic candles sat on each table, adding to the ambience of the constantly-color changing glowing decor. The sushi bar sat at the far end, but I never ventured this far in. The only separation was the upstairs lounge which was above the entrance. This space sat a smaller group and had its own bar, with an oblong shaped window that looked over the remaining restaurant below. Since I don't eat sushi (I know kappa and avocado rolls don't count), I can't really wax poetic about their food but everyone I was with highly enjoyed the place. I thought the service was great, from the hostesses to the waitstaff. What I was impressed with was when I asked the friendly hostess for some matches, she handed over these super-sized boxes, pictured below (there are two traditional sized boxes housed in the longer box). Surprised I've kept them for this long! They've lasted this long in addition to their New York City location, so they must be doing something right. I suppose the equivalent where I am now would be Katsuya or Nobu. read more

The crispy spicy tuna was good, but not life changing. The steak was cooked perfectly to our request, and the sauces were a fun addition having the Asian flavors. I went into this experience with high expectations; after all, it is the flagship restaurant of a famed Iron Chef! There were no disappointments whatsoever. It was very exciting to finally dine here but I was sadly left a little disappointed! Mostly with the food and the interior of the restaurant. Inside is very groovy with color changing lights and an open seating plan. It felt a like a cafeteria because of the layout of the restaurant and how loud it got. They had these funky table lights bolted in the center of the table that are as much a conversation piece as they are an inconvenience. Service was very attentive and formal which is a good thing; however, it was a little hard to connect with everyone we encountered. Generally, everyone was very nice. Food was brought out quick as well. Four of us ended up with the most expensive sushi platter because we were told that would be enough to feed all us. It was the right call and a good sampling of different types of fish and sushi. The flavors were not rocking my world for the price though! Also tried the braised pork belly and the wagyu beef dumplings. These were not enough for four but we each had a little nibble anyway. :) the beef dumplings were very good but left me wanting more. Pork belly on a rice porridge was good but not great. I opted for the skirt steak medium rare and was left a little disappointed. Meat had decent flavor but very chewy. The sauce was again, good but not great. The green beans it came with were not at all good: the ends weren't snapped off and the experience eating them was not fun. The Duck Duck Duck entree was very good and filling. However, the rice was something you could easily make in your kitchen. The black cod was beautiful and tasty but my friend said it could not rival Nobu's. Finally dessert! We got the Fiery Chocolate Tart because the pyromaniac in us was intrigued. They pour lit Bacardi 151 so it's a fiery topping over a chocolate mold that melts on top of burnt miso ice cream. The bites that had the alcohol on it tasted like the liquor. :( the brownies and tiny fruit pieces with it were pretty good! Presentation was stunning for all dishes, of course! I wouldn't come back here. Maybe f I was a more adventurous sushi eater? Also not a great spot for groups. This is my third time Morimotos but first time doing their omakase experience. The food was good, but the experience was a bit lackluster and the pacing of the courses could have been better. Food wise I thought the Chawanmushi was good and the flavor was well balanced out with the leek oil. The tuna tartare was good but we've definitely had better elsewhere in the city. The two best dishes were probably the poached lobster and the A5 Miyazaki Wagyu (supplement of $80). There was also a snapper dish with wasabi cream, and a sushi plate of 5 fishes (fatty tuna, amberjack, salmon, snapper and snow crab). Nothing to write home about. I've been to a few other omakases in the city and thought this was the least impressive compare others in Philly. Do yourself a favor if you want good omakase, check out Royal sushi, Yanagas omakase, Hiroki or Sakana for a better experience and quality of food. My wife and I came here for our first year wedding anniversary and were blown away by the 8- course Omakase and excellent service! We went all out with the Kobe beef upgrade and even had beluga whale caviar in the first course. First off, the aesthetic of the restaurant is gorgeous and modern... almost unforgettable in design with the sculpted wall art and brightly colored booths. The wait staff was knowledgeable about dishes, sake pairings, and details about each dish. The standout dishes for us was the Kobe beef cubes, which practically melted on the tongue. Also- they shared that they are one of 10 restaurants in the USA to sell Certified Kobe beef. The custard and beluga whale caviar was outstanding - a variety of textures and flavors from creamy to crunchy, salty to semi-sweet. The uni and beef tartare wrapped in mint leaf - amazing. The tuna tartare - one of my favorites- fatty toro and perfect wasabi sauce. The black cod in miso- more akin to fatty Chilean sea bass in my opinion (it comes from colder waters as well)- perfectly cooked and flavorful! I've been here once before and wasn't nearly as impressed... but I think it was because we stuck to what we were used to and didn't venture to try the unique dishes that they prepared for us last night. We were so disappointed they sold out of their Morimoto Omakase. We instead went with the chef's sushi combination (variety of sushi) and a few side sushi pieces. The sushi were fresh but not the best sushi we've ever had (sushi nakazawa is definitely still our favorite place). Overall the atmosphere was very chic and trendy with the cool interior wall designs, and food was pretty decent. Honestly speaking I didn't have high expectations because judging from the photos it gives off a loud clubish vibe, but man was I wrong! The ambience is very chill, modern and simple. The walls are super cool, the only thing is.. what's with the light in the middle of the table? Am I the only one who thinks it looks like something else? Haha. Oh man the food! Some of the best sushi I've had for a while. We had uni, fluke, spicy crunchy yellowtail, and toro scallion roll! All super fresh melts in your mouth. The hamachi jalapeño was excellent as well. My favorite things off the menu was the wagyu beef steak and the toro tartare. Omg the toro tartare was amazing! The toro was so soft and it came with a soft bao, salt, and various veggies. When you put everything together it was like the perfect combination of soft, crunchy, briny, creamy, salty, and sweet. It was the perfect bite. I also loved the wagyu beef it was so tender and flavorful! I was most excited about the sushi. The sushi was okay, not the best but still really good! Yes, sake options are phenomenal. But the sushi is even better! We tried so many different ones and although it technically isn't the most authentic one, the yellowtail was by far my favorite. I tried to visit Morimoto on a recent visit to Philly but the dinner dining times were very limited. So on this go round, I made an early reservation to ensure that we got in. From the outside, the restaurant is fairly understated but walking in, I was transported to a very uniquely designed dining room that was the perfect backdrop for a dining experience. The furniture was very clean and white and dim lights with uplighting added a little ambiance. We perused the menu and while the duck, duck, duck was calling my name and my friend was debating about ordering the miso cod, we both knew that we were gonna go with the omakase. For $125 for 8 courses, it's a time and financial commitment but we were excited about what was to come. I love it when I get to try something I've never had before or when common foods are imagined in different ways. Throughout the course of this meal, I found myself thinking that not only was it delicious but several of the courses were very creative. I mean I've had miso black cod a number of times. Each time, the fish just melts in my mouth. This time was no exception but the sweet honey mustard sauce was a perfect complement to the dish. And then, that broth that the toro tartare was sitting in...so rich yet light and a bite of the fatty fish along with the wasabi was amazing. And to finish, we had a sweet milk panna cotta with sake gelee and rhubarb...whhaattt! Incredible, just incredible. Other dishes included a white fish carpaccio with Japanese snapper, amberjack fish and tuna salad, Japanese citrus with pear and mint, sashimi, and their 72h wagyu. The only dish I wasn't crazy about was the cooked amberjack which I found difficult to cut and texturally unappealing. The main course of sushi tasted fresh and they had an extensive seasonal menu to choose from. We ended with some noodles, but these were not really worth the money. So when they closed the New York location, I was, to say the least, devastated. We decided to go to the original in Philly for my birthday this year. I was so excited. All I can say is... Dinner was paced beautifully and the food was delicious. The Fiery Chocolate was more of a show than I was expecting. It was beyond decadent. The only thing that is barely worth a mention from the evening is that neither of us enjoyed the Tuna Pizza. The tuna was high quality and fresh. The flavor profile should have worked. There was something off about the ratio of tuna to tortilla and accoutrements that didn't work for me mouth feel or flavor wise. It was awkward to eat and not exciting for me. Morimoto is one of those restaurants with hype but not much substance. I felt the items were overpriced and the flavor of the sushi was not that great. The fish was fresh but Again... with the price I was paying I expected it to be much better, not less in quality to an $18 sushi meal I have had in Houston. If you're in dire need of sushi and cannot control your urges, go here. Otherwise, save your money. I had the Omakaze. Service was nice and the interior of the restaurant was futuristic! read more
