Fun sushi spot. Great vibe and interesting murals on the walls. Our server was very nice and gave us all the time we needed. We ordered several rolls that were all very good, but the tempura cauliflower might have been the favorite just because of its originality. Don't think I'll be back in Philadelphia any time soon, but would absolutely go back to Fat Salmon if I do. Only bummer was I left my credit card there after dinner on a Sunday night and they are closed on Monday. We left Philly Tuesday before they opened. Nice spot right near Washington square - if you get a window seat you can watch all the passersby. Inside is relaxed and comfy with booth/table seats, and a small sushi bar as well. Tried the sake flight with cloudy, plum, and dry. Much bigger servings than expected! Plum was smooth and sweet, all three quite nice. Chicken katsu was breaded and fried so lightly, and the chicken was moist. Perfect combo of soft and crunchy. Spicy scallop roll had a delicate sweet flavor, and just a hint of spicy mayo. This Market Street find popped up on my Beli app. Fat Salmon is on our list of places to go back to on repeat. The vibe of the inside is eclectic, fun, and modern with a hint of whimsy. (Check out the cool murals and artwork!). There is bar and table seating. The sushi menu had the usual sushi items but don't stop there. Try a few of their signature rolls. They are unique and shouldn't be missed. The Fat Salmon roll and the Kimchee roll were two favorites. You can't go wrong with anything on the menu. Sake was also good. Service was excellent. Not bad but keep in mind that if you want anything other than their many kinds of signature rolls, I'd check out somewhere else. The menu has the usual appetizers of gyoza, edamame, age-tofu, but in terms of sushi, it's the signature rolls and some nigiri. I'm more of a purist when it comes to sushi, meaning just give me the fish and the rice, and don't love sauces like eel sauce or spicy mayo when there's too much of it and overwhelms everything. Which Fat Salmon uses in abundance. It's hard to see from my photo but basically, with the exception of the nigiri and one of the rolls, the other sushi was drenched in sweet soy sauce. I couldn't taste anything except that sauce. For me, it's hard to enjoy the fish when it's smothered like that. We still ate everything, though. My favorite was the sake bomb - I loved the torched salmon and tartar sauce on top. It was an interesting pairing of flavors that worked well. I was a little underwhelmed but the prices seemed fair, the portions were good, and, if you're craving Americanized Japanese sushi rolls, this would scratch the itch. Had a great girls dinner last night at Fat Salmon. What I like about Fat Salmon is that there is a large vegan selection while also having a good selection for the meat eaters. Service was a little slow but we didn't mind cause we were yapping. Our waitress was very friendly and helpful. We ordered a few appetizers and two rolls each. I thought the crispy rice app was delicious but a little hard to eat cause each piece was so big. It had the yam and kimchi (which is vegan) and it was crunchy and tasty. We also had seaweed salad which was big enough to split between all of us. Nothing to write home about but decent enough. Our rolls took some time to come out so we worked our way through a bottle of sujo. They had a couple flavors, we tried the strawberry and peach and both were tasty. When our rolls arrived we all got out our phones cause they were so cute. I got the tofu roll and the caulimflower (???) roll. They were both delicious and came with a side of ginger and wasabi. I can't wait to come back and try more rolls because there were so many options. Loved this place for a girls night but also would be great for a date. FOOD I ordered the Alaskan and Fat Salmon rolls. At first, I thought the prices were a little steep, but the amount of fish you get with each roll (especially the Fat Salmon!) makes it worth it. The Alaskan roll came with salmon, cucumber, and avocado. It tasted great and as expected with the classic roll. The Fat Salmon was one of their specialty roles and their namesake at that, and the modern fusion of a typical salmon roll was a great innovation. The pineapple-cilantro dressing was an interesting twist and added a touch of sweetness to the savory meal, and the salmon portions were enormous. I would definitely frequent here again if I'm looking for specialty rolls. DRINKS Tap water is complementary. Assorted beverages are available for purchase as well. SERVICE The staff were very kind and accommodating. My food came out with a tuna roll instead of an Alaskan roll, which I would have been fine with had I not had allergies to tuna, but the staff quickly brought out the Alaskan thereafter. I AMBIANCE The interior is decorated beautifully. The lighting and greenery aids the intimacy of the setting, and the place is always full. One of the best places in Philadelphia for sushi. The quality of the sushi is so fresh and is apparent from your first bite. I have dined here multiple times and do remember it being a bit better long ago. I'm unsure what changed but they are still top tier. Found fat salmon after searching for crispy rice on Yelp! Pretty solid Rolls were fresh and wrapped tightly. A bit heavy on the sauce for my preference, but easily something you can modify if you were dining in. We started with 2 miso soups which were excellent. Very flavorful. I ordered an order of salmon and super white tuna nigiri and a fat salmon roll. My fiancé ordered a spicy tuna crunch roll, flamenco roll, and rock n roll! It came delivered on a sushi boat which was beautiful...although we did feel extra when it came out! The nigiri had a great dish to rice ratio and all the rolls were delicious. The pineapple cilantro sauce on top of the fat salmon roll was something I had never had before as was the sweet chili sauce on top of the flamenco roll. I'm visiting a friend from the area and she loves going to Fat Salmon for special occasions. I'm a huge sushi fan so a couple people recommended Fat Salmon to me. I knew I had to check it out during the short time I was here. The interior is not what I expected. Fat Salmon's lighting was dim and more of a fancy bar style kind of vibe with its soft neon colors, electronic music in the background, and elegance. This is not your typical sushi restaurant vibe. There are a lot of signature/special sushi rolls here but I'm huge on the staples - if a restaurant can make the basic rolls well, then I'm usually satisfied. Just to note, Fat Salmon isn't cheap. Even the basic maki rolls I got were $8 per roll (seaweed on the outside, 6 pieces per roll - very standard). Overall, thought there was a bit too much rice compared to the amount of fish given. The rice quality was good and had the right amount of vinegar, but it was a bit too much. YELLOWTAIL ROLL - 8 This is the classic yellowtail roll that is also wrapped in scallions. It's definitely one of the better yellowtails I've had! It was tasty and the quality was great. Scallions provided a nice crisp to every bite and it was definitely my favorite roll tonight. SALMON ROLL - 8 They don't even have this roll on the menu because it's that basic, but you can definitely ask for it. I thought the salmon was pretty standard and the fish was fresh! It's usually my favorite roll, but not today. TEKKA (TUNA) ROLL - 8 This was OK. Not super memorable. Tuna doesn't usually have a strong taste anyway, but I'm glad I tried it. My friend got the FANCY SUSHI with salmon (a Fat Salmon Signature roll) and there were four pieces for $15.50. Dang, pretty steep but it was lots of salmon mixed with a tasty creamy sauce and lots of crunch on the side. Good to splurge on, maybe? The service was OK. They did have a busy crowd, but my friend and I felt like it wasn't easy to get our server's attention (to bring us the check, etc.). OK... deep breath. How... How do you... ok *puts hands in praying fashion* How do you get your lettuce in your avocado salad so crisp, cold, and fresh? Like... is it that it's washed in a special solution and then refrigerated for some time? Is it a special type of lettuce that's just known for it's fresh crispness? Do you put it in some sort of blast chiller for 1 minute before serving? Does it have something to do with the cold plate? I know the intro is a bit dramatic lol, but honestly I NEED to know how I can make salads with the insanely perfectly chilled, unbelievably crisp lettuce. I have been to one other restaurant in my life (coincidentally a Japanese Restaurant) that had such a crispy, cold, fresh, delicious consistency in their lettuce. That restaurant is Niwano Hana in Rockville MD. I don't usually go there, as I find that the sushi doesn't really measure up to a lot of other places in the area, but their lettuce is like yours. I would unabashedly recommended Fat Salmon to anyone who was looking for bomb a$$ sushi in Philly. One thing I'll say... parking is expensive in the garages nearby. But that's something that I noticed throughout Philly. MY LORD Philly. Calm down with your bloody parking fees. Philly garages be like... It's 17 dollars for the first 16 minutes, and anything from 18 minutes to 6 hours will be 39 dollars. Philly garages be like... please get what you want and LEAVE. I don't think I've ever paid so much in parking fees in a 2 day span. I was on some much needed PTO, so I just chalked up the extra fees to being off and trying to enjoy myself. But even I couldn't help but balking again... and again and again. I feel bad for these types of businesses with little to no reasonable parking, I hope Philly can get a handle on these insane parking fees for these small local amazing businesses.
