We loved getting to try a variety of flavors, and everything was beautifully prepared. The staff was incredibly friendly and welcoming, the drinks were amazing, and the entire meal was absolutely worth it. We left already looking forward to coming back and would highly recommend it! The only minor downside was that it got pretty warm inside. It was during the heatwave, so I don't think the A/C was able to keep up, but it definitely wouldn't stop us from coming back. I've been meaning to try Double Knot and was glad to go tonight with a friend/colleague. It is definitely very dark inside and I was glad to be seated in the less noisy basement compared with the super noisy bar area on the first floor that also has dinner seating. We sat in a cozy corner booth and could easily hear each other although we could not read the menu or clearly see what we were eating the lighting is so dim (and consistent with the gothic theme). Now onto the food. We ordered 9 dishes (waiter suggested 8) and it was way too much for us and I'm a big eater! Edamame dumplings - 4/5, may be just me, but I don't really enjoy mushy fillings to my dumplings. The broth they came in was amazing though Tuna rice cracker - 4/5, not really a cracker, more like a crunchy mini loaf of rice topped with tuna and a slice of jalapeno - delicious and much more filling than what I was expecting. I only gave a 4 instead of 5/5 for taste because of the unexpected presentation of the "cracker" Shishito pepper small plate - 5*/5 outstanding! I could eat these all day they were so delicious. I'm not sure how they flavor these or what light crunchy sprinkles were on top of this very generous portion of peppers (I would estimate maybe 30 peppers?) I'd go back just for this dish Black cod fried rice - 3/5, I should know better that a miso black cod will be somewhat fishy, and with it spread in chunks throughout the fried rice I'd say this was my least favorite dish. Crispy brussels sprouts - 4/5, a solid offering, not much to write home about Crispy tofu - 3/5, not particularly unique although it sounded amazing when described - cubes of deep fried tofu drizzled with peanut sauce on a bed of cilantro pesto. But not that tasty and not that interesting Scallop robo - 5/5, excellent with a kick from the spicy powder on these, note these are very small portions, three slices of scallop (not even a full scallop or if these were full scallops they were very thin) on a stick Ribeye scallion robo - 5/5, also excellent, with three chunks of tender grilled beef Mochi ice cream: passion fruit, matcha - 4/5, but mostly because I'm not a huge fan of mochi ice cream, I'd rather just have the ice cream or have it with a brownie or between two cookies So overall, service was great, not overly attentive. And the food was very solid with an outstanding exception with the shishito peppers. First of all - don't even contemplate coming here without a reservation. It's insanely popular and I can see why. We had dinner reservations for 7:45 but got there two hours early because we really wanted to try out their happy hour. Huge selection of food for happy hour and delicious drinks. We waited an hour but were sat and immediately cancelled our dinner reservations because we knew it was about to go down. Fair warning - if you're approaching 40 like us, it's dark, it's loud, and you're sitting on top of people. It will be worth it. We had the double knot roll, spicy tuna roll, BAO, and some drinks. All 10/10. But the real star is the grilled meats. Specifically the scallion ribeye. We tried to take pictures of all of it but it was literally too dark in the restaurant. I am a lover of restaurants that offer "many tastes" so mezze, tapas, ban chan, dim sum, etc, etc, are my kinda resties. Double Knot not only fills that request but ices the cake with a venue that makes you feel like you're in a movie (Thanks Schulson Collective and whatever design team you have on board!) I've eaten upstairs in the bar area, but for the best experience, I highly recommend getting a table downstairs. Walking down the dark, candlelit stairway feels like you're entering somewhere a little hidden and off-limits, and at the bottom you're met with a lively dining room that's sexy, intimate, and a total vibe. The menu is expansive, not quite Cheesecake Factory level, but close (in the best way!!) You can order a la carte from sections like cold dishes, small plates, crispy, meat, fish, rolls/handrolls, sushi/sashimi, robatayaki (my favoriteee!!), and sides, or go for the $69 tasting menu. That includes 10 dishes, with 2 robatayaki selections and seasonal soft serve. For an extra $10, you can upgrade your meat selection (wagyu bavette, not grilled) and specialty sashimi. This round we opted for the $79 tasting menu (we were birthday-ing it up). Here's the rundown: Cold- Hamachi Ceviche: This was one of my faves of the night. Cubes of hamachi perfectly "cooked" with bright grapefruit, entangled in crunchy cucumber noodles and topped with crispy rice pearls. Small- Edamame Dumplings: Give me 10 of these!!! Favorite of the night, these perfectly poached pillows were filled with sweet peas and floating in a truffle kissed broth that was savory and addictive. Order this! Crispy - Japanese Fried Chicken: Addictive nuggets of perfectly fried chicken thighs that needed nothing more than a squeeze of lemon or drag through the creamy miso sauce. Meat- Wagyu Bavette: Despite this being "wagyu" it tasted like a regular old hanger steak. While good, the extra $10 we paid for this upgrade was disappointing though the sweet potato schmear underneath of it was quite good. Fish- Japanese Scallop: This was another favorite of the night. Percfectly seared scallops came in a flavorful citrus segment/ponzu sauce. Sides- Soy Udon Mazmen: A tangle of udon noodles topped with a chunky sauce of garlic and what tasted like chopped shrimp. This reminded me of the classic dish "Shrimp with lobster sauce" just with noodles. It was eh. Very mild flavor and wouldn't order again. Robotayaki: We opted for the Ribeye Scallion and Enoki Mushroom (enoki wrapped in fatty bacon). I've had both before and while the ribeye was good (steak is hard to mess up when cooked correctly) I would reccomend the short rib as it's much more succulent. The Enoki Mushroom though. GIVE ME 20!!! These are one of my fave things on their menu. Rolls/Handroll: We went with the Double Knot which was good, fresh and fatty. Everything you want Big Eye tuna to be but nothing write home about. Specialty Sashimi: Opted for the Toro which comes with triangles of the freshest toro your chopsticks will grab. Good and fatty but sashimi isn't my favorite so I'm a bit biased. Dessert- Miso Softserve: A small little dollop, about 3 spoons worth, is all you need to finish a big meal but no hint of miso. Just really good vanilla soft serve. All in all another fantastic meal at Double Knot, though, I feel I will likely stick with the a la carte option since I like being able to order multiples from specific categories, especially the dishes I find addictive (Edamame dumplings and Enoki Mushroom Robotayaki). Whether you go here for their happy hour (great drinks and great prices), a light meal or all out feast with the tasting menu, you are bound to have a great experience. read more

Double knot is such a wonderful dining experience. Our group had the tasting menu, a selection of basically every section of the menu and dessert. We were seated downstairs. It feels like a converted cellar lit with candles, very vibey and romantic. Only thing I would say is it's pretty dark so if you have bad eyes it makes it hard to keep reading the menu to make your selections, so preview it off you know you are doing the tasting menu. The food was really good, and everything was presented well. The service was outstanding, the staff was attentive professional, and very patient. Stand out dish was grilled scallops. This place was amazing! I came here for happy hour with a friend and most options were $8 or less, and were totally worth it. We tried out several different options plus a specialty cocktail, which was yummy. The tuna sushi was very fresh and soft, the edamame dumplings were unique and flavorful, the shrimp tacos were sooo yummy, and the kimchi fried rice came in a very decent portion size! If I had more room in my stomach, I'd order more. Our waitress was super friendly and very attentive and our food came out in pretty good timing! I stopped by Double Knot in Philly during happy hour while in town for a work conference. The place was packed with no tables available, so we ended up at two bar stools after asking a young lady to shift over. The bar area is very cramped, my neighbor and I kept rubbing elbows. The lighting is extremely dark. Even with Lasik, I struggled, and my girlfriend had to use her phone to read the menu. They have tiny flame shaped lights, but they barely help. Service at the bar was busy, so it took a few minutes to order. Once we did, the food came out surprisingly fast, so fast I was a bit skeptical. We ordered a few sushi rolls, kimchi fried rice, and karaage chicken. The sushi rolls were basic, nothing special. The karaage chicken was disappointing, coming out room temperature with a bland sauce. The kimchi fried rice was a bit overpriced, but actually pretty good. Drinks were inconsistent. Mine was strong, but my girlfriends was weak. By the time we left, there was a line out the door. Overall, I would avoid this place, especially during happy hour. I had the shrimp tempura which was great but just missing the signature eel sauce and then the salmon avocado was good because the fish was fresh. I go the rose knot as my drink. Double Knot might as well be my favorite restaurant. They have one of the most affordable tasting menus I have seen ($69 pp) and you leave feeling stuffed. For $69 you get one cold dish, one small dish, one crispy dish, one meat dish, one fish dish, one side, 2 robatayaki skewers, one sushi roll, and one sashimi dish. Each dish seems to be a full portion, and I have never been disappointed by how delicious each dish is. My favorites are the Edamame Dumplings (they taste like truffle and sit in this delicious wine broth), Double Know Big Eyed Tuna and the Short Rib Robatayaki. Each table also has this incredible smoky mustard on it which goes great with the Robotayaki. The ambiance of Double Knot is also really special. You can sit upstairs for a more chill vibe, or you can sit downstairs for a more romantic vibe. I love sitting downstairs for special occasions, like birthdays or anniversaries. You need a reservation to sit downstairs. Most of the time you need a reservation for upstairs, but we have been able to walk in a few times and get bar seating for happy hour. Not pictured is the Udon that we didn't care for, they were a little bland and not worth it compared to how great the other dishes were. Also not pictured was the one item that was truly inedible, the mochi dessert. I absolutely love mochi and this was so crumbly and did not taste good at all. However by then I was already so happy with my meal that I really didn't care. If we had dined à la carte and we ordered it for dessert I would have been more disappointed. Can't believe I haven't reviewed Double Knot! I've been on a few occasions for date night, group dinners, and drinks at the bar. Like many other Schulson spots, this is a beautiful and thoughtfully appointed restaurant with a great happy hour. Order a bunch of things and enjoy communal style! You can also go for the chef's tasting option which is ~$70 and a good move if you're going to order more than 8 things anyways. Wagyu soup dumplings and edamame dumplings are a must, as are some items from the sushi menu. Pieces here are priced higher than most general takeout sushi spots so I usually keep it to a minimum and order more of the small plates. Tuna rice crackers are also worth multiple orders. I like to sit at the downstairs bar but really anywhere will work. Great spot to make a rezzie and enjoy! Looking forward to my next trip. read more

We came for happy hour on a weekend (which is such a good deal that I don't see a lot of restaurants offer). Their HH menu had a bunch of food options but only one cocktail/one beer, FYI. Inside is much bigger than it looks, with a front bar area, a dining area on the other side, and then a downstairs bar counter where they do the tasting menu. Props to the hostess for wrangling an extremely busy night and for finding a four-person spot for a three-person party, instead of trying to squeeze us into some two-person arrangement. HH is walk-in only, I recommend showing up at 4 right when they open so you don't have to wait like we did. I think we showed up around 5, put our names down for a quoted hour wait, and then didn't get seated until about 6:45 because everyone else had the same idea of enjoying HH for as long as possible. We ordered a bunch of dishes as soon as we sat down and they came out almost immediately. A note that the dishes are correspondingly HH-sized so if you're starving like we were, make sure to order two of each. My favorites: 1. Edamame dumplings: These were a weirdly mushy first bite but both the taste and texture grew on me. It's a nice, subtle flavor - I think I even prefer it to the OG pork variety. 2. Maitake mushroom skewer: I love roasted mushrooms especially this kind, with the ruffled crispy edges. 3. Crispy tofu with miso caramel sauce: I could've eaten a whole bowl of this. The only dish that didn't quite do it for me was the crispy Brussels sprouts which were drenched in probably the same sweet sticky sauce as the tofu but was way too salty. Our waiter wasn't the friendliest but came by often to check on us and made sure we knew when was the last call for HH. Their happy hour deal is worth every penny. First of all, the deal is amazing anyways. Second, The quality of fish blew my mind. My friend and I were genuinely fan girling the entire time over how good the food was. We got the chirashi, albacore, edemame dumplings, pork potstickers, Brussel sprouts and a drink. The only dish I'd say was eh was the pork potstickers. They were fine but nothing special. Everything else was genuinely so amazing. Service was good. Vibes were cute. Our table was a little too close to our table next door me and the woman were on top of each other but they were very kind about it. Had a great first visit during happy hour last week for my birthday! My friend and I were able to grab a table around 4:45 without any reservations in hand. Within 15 minutes the entire place filled up, and there was a line waiting for a table to be seated. One of my other friends randomly showed up, and we kinda shared a booth wall seat, and the server was super kind and didn't make a fuss about it at all. Overall we had a solid visit. The karaage chicken was only okay imo, not that crispy or well seasoned, I'd probably skip this. Double Knot/Sampan is known for a couple of their staple flagship items I would say like edamame dumplings and kimchee fried rice, both continue to be solid. As inflation continues, the price of happy hour continues to hike up over the years, and it's not that great of a deal in my opinion, but the Schulson quality is always there. You might be closer to getting a better deal with their chefs tasting menu at $55 pp. All of the Robos I thought were okay, the short rib was nice and juicy though - all of them were solid, just nothing crazy amazing to write home about. The chicken baos were good, but again at $8 or $4 each, meh oh value? I'm glad I finally got to try their happy hour menu, but I wouldn't rush back for it based on value. I'd probably opt to try their tasting menu at $55 to compare personally. We mostly snacked a bunch of things between the 2 of us and our bill was still $95 before tip, with 1 drink per person during happy hour. read more

The place was very intriguing. We were led downstairs into a dark, dark room where it was difficult to read the menu. The area was lit by real candles via tea light candles and candelabras. The menu was vast, but the server was very helpful in her descriptions. We ordered a few cocktails and decided to get a bunch of various items to share from all the menus. My favorites were definitely the ramen and the waygu dumplings. The toro was delicious too! read more
