If you're looking for really good sushi and Japanese food, I recommend this place. I saw Japanese customers dining there. It's a good sign that that they serve legit food. Enoki and egg soup is my favorite appetizer. Light broth with umami and perfect saltiness. My second favorite appetizer is agedashi tofu. So silky like pudding with light teriyaki broth. Beef roll up with scallions: beef is tender with some kind of sweet teriyaki sauce. It's pretty good. Eggplant filled with ground chicken. It looks appealing but unfortunately a bit too greasy. The sushi here is very special. The sushi rice is silky and moist. The fish piece is bigger than the rice. The eel is a must try here. It's very big compared to the rice underneath it. It very flavorful too. Mt entree is steamed salmon with seafood broth. I recommend squirting the lemon to the broth to make it taste like yuzu sauce as it lightens the whole dish and makes it less fishy. read more

PRO: I will say, if you want a place where you can sit and have a conversation, dark mood lighting (especially forgiving if the last time you saw each other alot was 20 years ago! - LOL), Sagami is an excellent choice. PRO: They don't rush you out - take your time. It was a Thursday night, so not especially busy when we came at 6:30 PM. CON: I could not find an updated menu online - I'm one of those people who like to peruse a menu in advance. I started with a vegetable tempura appetizer ($10) - excellent, light, airy, tasty. My main was the dragon roll - very tasty. Service was quite nice. Appetizers came out almost immediately, the rolls took a lot longer to get to our table. We went here for our anniversary. We were the first patrons of the night. I think be bought into hype in anticipation of an authentic Japanese restaurant experience. Being from Delaware, we are used to Chinese-owned sushi restaurants, so this was going to be epic. Sushi rolls were fine. Salmon Teriyaki was okay, but nothing special. The worst part was that we wanted a NY strip steak Teriyaki, and they were out (and we were the first patrons of the day). Chirashi was overrated. There wasn't much natural flavor and I felt the need to douse it with soy sauce. I did find myself forcing it down my throat to justify the cost of the chirashi bowl. This was my first time here after the restaurant change of ownership. The food is no longer the same. The quality has substantially dropped. What I had: Chef's choice sushi. My benchmarks: Harutaka (Tokyo), Kusakabe (San Francisco) and Kosaka (NYC). Needless to say, I am pretty picky. I love Sagami. You can drive to the restaurant and park in their lot. Hokkaido uni was super fresh. Bluefin toro with caviar. My 5 year old loves their broiled salmon. It is BYOB so I don't have to overspend to have super premium sake with my meal. And the price is 1/2 of the "top spots in the Philadelphia area". Sure, it is not a place to see or be seen like Royal Izakaya or Hiroki. My wife wears jeans and a t-shirt going to Sagami. But if you are looking for a kid-friendly yet super high quality sushi/sashimi, Sagami gets my #1 vote and 5 stars. read more

I am from Los Angeles and have had sushi all over the world including in Japan many times. I know good sushi. For years there was nothing more exciting than Sagami in New Jersey. The sushi was up there with any I've had. A small restaurant far from the Pacific with some of the most elite sushi. Fast forward to yesterday. The sushi at Sagami was unfortunately some of the worst I've ever had. Smelly, chunky and not fresh salmon, tuna and yellow tail. Poorly cut Nigiri with pieces of the fish that shouldn't be there. The chefs have clearly been replaced as have the fish suppliers. I'm so sad a sushi lover and Sagami fan for years. The only saving grace was the service - extremely kind - and the veggie tempura was fine. The spicy tuna crispy rice was whatever but glad to see new additions. read more

I love the ambiance at this place! The romantic dim lighting and the interior decoration definitely does not match the exterior of this restaurant. My friends and my partner ordered the chirashi which actually takes a while to come out so I would put this order in early if you already know you want this item. I got the unaju which is eel rice bowl. I had asked the waitress for less rice and surprisingly they did gave me the perfect amount of rice! I was also pleasantly surprised at how much eel was in the bento. It was delicious. My partner's favorite item from the chirashi was the scallops. We also got tempura and cold tofu to share and enjoyed all the appetizers. This is a great place for a romantic sushi date and also a great dinner spot with friends. I am SOOO late in trying this place! Evidently has been serving some of the best sushi in the tri-state area for over a decade at least! Went with some friends for a bday celebration on a Friday night, no reservations and luckily got a table for 4! It got quite full by about 8pm. The owners/servers were sooo sweet. Service was exceptional. And the food?! I haven't had a sushi place blow me away like this in a very long time! Presentation, freshness and overall taste of everything was def 5 stars! Food and service is consistently top-notch for this restaurant. They did have a rocky few months last year with the new owners transition, but seems to stabilized now. The prices have increased around (20%) but so has every other industry, still a good value for the quality and service that you're getting. Small minor stuff to iron out (too much raw scallions in miso soup) and then this place will be hard to get reservations again. We have finally found our favorite Japanese restaurant in the area. I would recommend making reservations. Everything is good and they give tea. We will be back! I ordered the seaweed salad which came with different kinds of seaweed. I have never had anything like it before. It was cool and also delicious and light! The chirashi was good too. To be fair, I haven't had a lot of raw fish on the east coast, but I've been told for the Philly area that this place is top tier with authenticity and freshness. We didn't have time to go to NYC on this trip, but I think this place wasn't far behind some of the expensive and elite restaurants in NYC in terms of quality of fish. The decor however was dated here, but nothing against them for that. The servers were pretty friendly here and the service overall was great. I have been coming to Sagami for years now. I come for any big celebration like birthdays or graduations. This is by far the best and most fresh sushi you can get in the Philadelphia area. The chirashi bowl is expensive but the most bang for your buck with all the variety you get. My favorite fish is definitely the scallop. It is SO fresh and sweet! They serve free hot green tea, if you ask. During busy times, it can take up to 1 hour to get food from the sushi kitchen, but worth the wait! Meanwhile, the regular kitchen is pretty quick. I recommend the fried oysters (huge, plump, and juicy!), tempura, or agedashi tofu. The waiters are always polite. The ambiance is homey and classy. The ceiling is quite low, so watch out! Not an enjoyable night at Sagami. I believe they are too busy for their own good. Sushi tasted fine, but the Maguro was mushy, clearly not good quality. Perhaps it was refrozen or not defrosted properly. This was the first time I've had poor quality fish from Sagami. In addition, to the poor-quality tuna, the waitress brought my wife an incorrect dinner. She ordered the mixed fried seafood, which the waitress correctly wrote on her pad. Unfortunately, she entered the order into the kitchen system as shrimp tempura. My wife ate the tempura, but that was not what we wanted. In fairness, the waitress asked if my wife wanted it replaced. We declined as my food was on the table, and the point of going to a restaurant with someone is to enjoy the meal together. We will help solve the overcrowding issue at Sagami by not returning for a year or two. There are plenty of mediocre Japanese restaurants from which to choose. Wow!! I've been here several times and it seems that each is better than the last! In my opinion, Sagami is the best sushi spot in the region, including Philly. My favorite thing to order is the sushi box B. It has such a wonderful assortment and everything is incredibly fresh. This time, we started with some of the delicious seaweed salad, edamame, and miso soup. The standout appetizer however was the nasu shigiyaki! I hadn't ordered this before but it was so amazing I will definitely be getting it again the next time I visit! The miso chicken filling is so savory, and the eggplant shell is perfectly cooked. Be warned though, it is a larger serving so definitely order this to share! Service here is always impeccable, super attentive with food coming out quickly and fresh. I came here with 2 friends around 12:15pm. We were seated promptly and more than half of the tables were seated. The ceiling is low, I'm 5'10'' and am close to hitting my head, but it feels cozy and warm inside. Japanese decor, I've never been to Japan, but from the photos I've seen it looks authentic. We tried a bunch of food between the three of us. I had the tonkatsu which is a breaded pork cutlet, it was tender and the breading crunchy. I also had nigiri of tuna, anagi, and unagi, as well as an "eel avocado roll. The unagi nigiri was the best I've ever had, and while I've never had tuna or anagi nigiri, they were very enjoyable. I put eel avocado roll in quotes because they brought me a regular eel roll with some sliced avocado on the side. I got a kick out of it. My tonkatsu came with a very flavorful salad and miso soup, both were good. One friend had the marinated chicken box and the yellowfin roll, he said he really enjoyed both and the other friend said the shrimp tempura roll was the best she ever had. Service was friendly and quick. I will be back! Edit: Wanted to post an update since the news of the passing. RIP Mrs. Fukuyoshi. I first came here 4 years ago, and most recently in November of 2023 on a date with my girlfriend and I enjoyed every bit of it. The news of Mrs. Fukuyoshi passing is sad. Based on all the positive reviews, the secret is out on this authentic Japanese restaurant. Now I will be honest. Upon arrival, Sagami's location will make you hesitate if you've found the right spot. It's tucked away in a dense residential neighborhood next to a busy road and overhead train tracks. But I swear to you, once you step inside, all that disappears. It is soooo quiet inside, oh my goodness. I don't know what kind of soundproofing they use, but I want that in my home. The dark wood decor, the low ceilings, and the soft diffused lighting peering through the window treatments all make you feel as if you've suddenly transported yourself to some remote part of Japan. I honestly forgot that we were still in Collingswood, New Jersey. Now, I'm not a sushi guy, but I came here for the udon. The Tanuki Udon, to be exact. Which was soothing, comforting, and tasty. I was pleased. This is the perfect date spot if you're looking to transport yourself into an authentic Japanese restaurant. However, I would recommend going there during "non-date hours"...like as soon as they open on a weeknight. I would imagine that the place can get rather packed, and with all those tiny tables, this is not the place for large people or groups to gather. (Tall people, beware, you may not be comfortable with those low-hanging ceilings.) The prices for all their dishes are super affordable compared to other swanky places you could take a date to. But what makes this places unique is its decor, ultra-cozy atmosphere, and intimate setting. As one of my friends who lived in Japan for a while and loves this place, I can now see why. So sad , love the legacy staff at this former institution of south Jersey, but the new owner (as of January 2025) has managed to ruin this restaurant in a matter of 30 days. They are more focused now on adding online reservations vs carry the torch of Shigeru Fukuyoshi. They've increased prices (20% on most items) , drastically reduced fish quality (anyone who truly knows sagami will understand) , and added a bunch of items to the menu no one asked for...or wanted. I feel terrible for the staff that were there forever, as they will see the majority of their "regulars" will think out and stop coming . The business model has drastically changed from quality fish and preparation (anyone who knows, it use do take a long time to get your sushi) to quick turnover, and drastically reduced fish quality. So sad. I wish they sold to someone who took pride in the legacy of this James beard finalist, instead of non- Japanese ownership that care more to squeeze every last dollar from less discerning customers. Spicy tuna roll with crunchy, was poorly rolled and not quality fish, the nigiri all tasted of poor quality, and the sushi rice now tastes more in line with a Chinese restaurant. All the nigiri was served way too cold, and fish quality was mid to low tier, hate to say it but it was true. Alan Su, you had an opportunity to continue a tradition, instead you botched the handoff and have begun to do irreparable damage to this former top tiered Japanese restaurant. What were you thinking? Sagami is a HIDDEN GEM! It's extremely hard to find, since it's right off the freeway and the parking lot entrance is kind of tiny. But, when we did find it, we walked in and let them know we had a party of 9. We called ahead of time to make a reservation, but unfortunately, they do not accommodate parties larger than 6 for reservations. Upon entering, the take out table was transformed into a table for us to sit since no other table was large enough. It was right by the door (which kinda sucked because it was cold, but after sitting there for quite some time, the breeze from the door opening was pleasant) ANYWHOOO -- it's a BYOB place (which we love woohoo). Upon sitting down, the one thing that kind of bothered me is that it took the server about 30 minutes to come to our table to take our order. We were sitting there for quite some time waiting for someone to attend to us. But, I understand a little because the place was PACKEDD!! and when I mean packed, you are basically breathing on the person next to you. The place is super quaint and super tiny. It reminds me of an authentic Japanese restaurant in japan. The atmosphere was lowly lit, and you could see the sushi chefs prepare the sushi at the counter. We ordered quite a few things since we had a large party. We started off by ordering the Hamachi (fried fish), but unfortunately, they didn't have any more :( booo. As for the rest of the appetizers, we ordered the tofu, edamame and gyoza. For entrees, we ordered Sushi A and Sushi B, Charishi, Salmon Skin Roll, and Unagi Tobiko Maki roll. The one thing about the appetizers that stood out to me most was the tofu. It's 4 pieces of soft tofu with a little crispy outside in a swamp of this light, delicate, sweet soy sauce. It wasn't overpowering and complemented the tofu so well. The sushi assortments from both A and B were amazinggg!! The sushi rice is flavored perfectly, you can taste the sweetness and vinegary-ness. And the fish is high quality. There was no gamey or fishy taste left behind. It melted in your mouth and was so tender and soft. The charishi bowl was the same. Super high quality fish on a bed of fluffy, soft, sushi rice. The sushi in both the A and B combo had a hint of wasabi. So, if you aren't a fan of that, just beware. I think it was the perfect amount added :) The Salmon skin roll was a little too salty for my liking, but it did have the perfect crispy crunch. But, the unagi tobiko maki roll? AMAZING. you HAVE to order this roll, no questions asked. The reason why this place didnt get 5 starts is how long we had to wait in order to get our order taken. We spent a total of 2.5 hours in there, and it was a little frustrating because of how hungry we were. The time it took the food to come out was pretty long, but looking at how delicate each fish was placed, and how the cuts were - you can tell they took the time to make sure that there was the perfect balance of rice and fish and that the presentation was appealing. Wow, just wow! Very interesting japanese decor and moody lighting throughout the place. Awesome spot for date night, celebratory or a group dinner (within up to 8 people). It gets super busy and you certainly need to place a reservation. Parking gets full very quickly, would recommend carpooling if coming as a group. The service was wonderful, our waitress was very sweet and attentive. They did not rush us, brought out an ice bucket for our sake without being asked, often refilled our water as needed and checked in if we needed anything. The enoki and tempura were delicious appetizers! The enoki had just the right umami. The mix and egg and enoki was a delicious combination. Tempura was crispy and not overcooked. Yeah this is a hole in the wall Sushi place in New Jersey right across from Philadelphia. I would highly recommend giving this place a try. The venue very much gives mom & pop vibes. It's quaint and cozy. The fish was extremely high quality, super fresh and tasty. The chirashi bowl was a standout, with a generous sampling of raw fish atop a bowl of rice. In fact, I was pleasantly surprised by the portions at Sagami. Many sushi restaurants I've been to have small portions, but this place did not skimp at all. II never know this great place for sushi until my daughter's classmate recommendation recently. I drove by this area quite often never noticed this hidden treasure. The parking lot is small, but we came earlier In the afternoon (~6:30) for dinner. No reservation, they found a table for us right away. After dinner, there was a long line outside waiting to get in, and cars waiting to park near at the small parking area in the back. The Chirachi Bowl is by far the most popular selection. Shashimi over warm sushi rice covered with seaweed has a great presentation and looks so yummy. We ordered another dish with just Sashimi, and that are enough for two.
