Amazing, one of the best meals of my life. We got the seasonal omakase which was 8 courses and a palate cleansing portion as well. We also ordered the o-toro and the uni which were outstanding. Service was impeccable and the waiters/waitresses were very informative from each course to sake and wine pairings. Portions looked small but after the 8 courses we were full. The timing on the omakase and the wait between each course was not bad and long, everything came out around the same time as the entire meal took around 2.5 hrs. Wow. That's really all I can say about this place. Started by iron chef Morimoto - this place does not fail to impress. I went here for my birthday, and the ambience is unique. It's a narrow restaurant with tables separated by these lighted barriers that change color throughout the night, effectively changing the ambiance of the entire restaurant. I sat on the narrow side tables, which is great - but the centerpiece is firmly attached to the table, making it somewhat difficult to share. For ambiance, this place easily gets a 5. For food - also a 5. I have a list of restaurants with the best dishes. This place has the best sea bass (really, fish in general). It was so tender, so flavorful, and I really didn't want it to end. The ONLY setback of that dish is that it is not filling, and I highly recommend getting the Duck Duck Duck alongside it. It comes with duck fried rice, and is enough food to round out a meal for two people. The yellowtail tartar for a cold appetizer is excellent as well. Honestly, I can't say enough about this restaurant. If all else fails - just make sure you get the chilean sea bass - you really won't regret it. read more

I was taken here for Valentine's Day as a surprise. Oh my gosh. The food here is amazing. I got the ramen to start and ordered the Duck Duck Duck to finish. The staff was friendly, decor beautiful, and staff very helpful when we were confused at the menu items. If I lived closer I would definitely come back. This place is a good restaurant. Don't get me wrong with the three star review. However at this price point I have high expectations. First annoyance, and this may be because I am a sushi peasant, but there were very few rolls to choose from. I asked the waitress and she said it's because the fish is of such high quality most people choose sashimi. That's fine but I like a lot of different t flavors I don't want just fish and rice. Also I ordered the fatty tuna fish and it was like 50 bucks for literally 4 slivers. It was good and I never had it before so I wanted to try it but honestly I think I prefer the regular tuna lol. Not a fatty kind of guy. The desert ice cream was really good. We also had some cake which was just blah. This place has great ambiance and it's definitely one of the most high end restaurants in philly. But if you want really good sushi my favorite is Azie in suburbs. read more

After spending a few days determining where to bring my significant other to celebrate a birthday, I decided to bite the bullet and went to Morimoto last night. I am still trying to process how I felt about the food, the staff, the cost, etc.... I am trying not to get affected by the $450 bill and critique the restaurant on the merits of food taste and quality. But it's hard not to think about the effects on one's wallet. OK, the food is good. Really. But it is not worth $120 per person on the tasting menu. Portions were not huge and filling as other people have mentioned. I ended up ordering more nigiri to fill us up. We were still starving when we left. As for the wait staff, they were nice. Again, very average for a pricy restaurant. The decor was also nice, but just average again. In a nutshell, that will be the first and the last time i will go to morimoto. I am a huge fan of his talents when watching the iron chef. At least now, I can say I've tasted his food. By the way, I just moved here from Seattle and San Francisco. There a a lot of restaurant in san Francisco that can put the morimoto restaurant to shame, and not cost that much. I have yet to find these restaurants in Philly. I am told they are out there. I hate to say this......skip morimoto and save your cash for something else. read more

I'm hesitant to say that we need to slow the hype train here: some of the dishes are truly... transcendent... especially the yellowtail tartare. P2P (price to portions ratio) is really problematic, though, which is almost always the case with sushi restaurants containing dark 'mood lighting' and modern art decor that's ultimately kinda tacky (see also: Buddakan or TAO). The scallop dish that we had was literally a couple scallops chopped into bits, and I got a sinking "I could have made this at home" feeling with it. There's nothing standout, either, about the sashimi, though big ups for fatty tuna and the environmental ethics conversations it'll spur at the table (if you know it's going extinct, should you just try to get the last of it, or should you on principle still defer, even if your N=1 action isn't going to make a difference?) Service/logistics are generally of the "we got you here at our price point, so you're trapped" variety, if you catch my drift. read more

Morimoto is the definition of good food done well. Whenever I'm in town I stop in to eat. Some of my favorites are the tuna pizza and tofu made tableside. Service is always attentive and efficient. They also have varying levels of tasting menus that enable the trying of a few items. read more

I typically don't leave negative reviews, especially during the coronavirus when restaurants need the business. However, in this case I felt particularly compelled. The service at the restaurant was quite rude. Me and the other person dining with me were considering whether or not we should leave, because we heard great things about the food. However, as we were deciding we saw the table next to us send back their plates for their $$$ Omasake because the food was way too salty and not up to standard. Instead of taking ownership, the service continued to be rude and make up excuses. Huge red flag. Would 10/10 not recommend. Ended up leaving the restaurant and heading to FATTY SALMON just down the block. So delicious, great service, awesome ambience, and you'll probably spend 1/3 of the money. read more

During my Philadelphia visit, I met with my friend whom I haven't seen in 3 years. He told me ahead of time that he was going to take me to a nice sushi joint. When he pulled up in front of Morimoto, I was just so excited. It was Saturday evening without reservation. Since the sushi bar was available immediately, we decided to take the sushi bar, rather than wait 3 hours for a table. As soon as we sat at the sushi bar, the sushi chef immediately greeted us in Japanese. Yes! A real Japanese sushi chef... We don't have those in Cleveland, so I felt like I was home already. Our server was this Asian dude who had some weird accent. I think he just wanted to sound cool. He explained their specials for the night but he explained really really fast, so I had no clue what they had. Anyway, we decided to order a bottle of Japanese white wine, Koshu. It was not too sweet, but had a crisp tangerine/grapefruits flavor. Kinda like Pinot Gris. For appetizers, we ordered hamachi with jalapeno pepper slice with ponzu sauce, and kobe beef with yuzu fused hot oil. We watched the chef prepared both appetizers and I was so impressed by his knife skills. How can he slice anything so paper-thin? The ingredients were so fresh and the presentation was elegant. For entree, we decided to get sushi chef's selection ($75). It came with 2 kinds of maki rolls (unagi and spicy tuna), 8 different kinds of nigiri sushi (2 pieces per fish), including chu-toro, salmon, red snapper, etc... Every sushi was so fresh and just a right amount of rice to fish ratio. Addition to sushi, there was a homemade kasutera (like sponge cake), which was so delicate and tasty. It was plenty for both of us and we were actually full and happy. The sushi chefs were very friendly and even though they were busy, they explained everything they were making. I think my friend was trying to impress me by taking me to Morimoto. He always jokes about how crappy Cleveland is and we don't have super fancy restaurants like in Philly. What an experience! Went here last night with two longtime friends to catch up. I can't tell you everything that was said at the table, but I can tell you all about the food and drink. I think we ordered almost everything on the menu... starting with a carafe of sake (fukumitsuya morimoto) aka "the one in the middle" because nobody can really pronounce it. That was good stuff, nice way to get things started. We ordered a number of appetizers - diver scallop ceviche, hamachi, the 10 hour pork 'kakuni', and rock shrimp tempura. The three of us agreed that the chilean sea bass would be a nice entree to split after the appetizers. The sake was a nice balance to all of the appetizers, very smooth. Everything was incredibly fresh tasting and good. We did get annoyed and started to laugh at the phreakishly phallic mood light that pops up from the middle of the table. You almost have to do a reach-around to get to the other apps and the carafe of sake. Funny, none of us could figure out why such a place with amazing design and mood would have a shafty light in the middle of the table like that. You'd think they could come up with a better, more elegant lighting concept that would fit the presence of the large room. It became hilarious after a while though (could have been the sake), I digress. All of the appetizers and the sea bass ... Just amazing really, I've had this many times before but this was truly awesome. After that was gone, I think we were all wondering what we could order next for dinner, because the apps and the entree went in a flash. The waiter asked if we wanted to order a sushi combo and so we did, and added another carafe of sake. The Sushi came out hella-fast and was out-of-this-world good; all the fish was ultra-fresh. I've eaten a boatload of sushi in my time, this was "up there" with the best. We demolished the sushi platter and finished the sake. Wow, just wow. Just enjoying that memory for a moment. The bill is what I expected it to be - a few hundred (don't kid yourself, you know what you're getting into). Totally worth it for a meal like this, with service like that. I can say this is hands down my favorite restaurant in philly. I have been going here forever and my parents have been going since it opened. I love sitting at the sushi bar and eating my meal there. It is mesmerizing to watch the chefs make the different sushi dishes and other fish dishes. I have never had a bad meal and I love love love love splurging on the omakase. That is when you pay a set amount for a certain number of courses and the chef prepare whatever they feel like preparing for you. They make the most beautiful dishes and really pay such close attention to detail. Their skills are astounding. The atmosphere is a bit dated for me, however, it doesn't take away one bit from how amazing the food is. I was able to meet Morimoto himself on one occasion and he was just the sweetest person. It is expensive, but then again, it is worth every penny. I would come here any night of the week just to enjoy a beautifully crafted, absolutely delicious, well thought-out meal any day. read more

This is the best meal I've ever had...and also the most expensive. Went with a gift certificate for my boyfriend's graduation, and for this important meal it was well worth it. But I don't see us going back anytime soon as it is just SO expensive. We, gift certificate in hand, decided to try the omekase, which is their tasting menu. OH MY GOSH. It is SO much food and SO delicious. One order of it would definitely be enough to feed two people. But we each got one...and then had to walk the whole 2.5 miles home just to digest. We tried the traditional omekase (which has all of the menu's signature dishes, and doesn't change), and the seasonal omekase (which has all different options that rotate regularly) and shared everything so that we could try 16 different courses. It was incredible. I'm not going to name all of them, but suffice it to say that it was 3 cold-ish/starter dishes, 3 hot dishes, a sushi platter, and dessert. PLUS a mini-course to cleanse your palate after the hot dishes. Every single dish was phenomenal. I would recommend the traditional omekase if you haven't been before. The seasonal is $50 more, and although it was super fun to have the variety of doing both, the traditional had plenty of lavish and exciting food. One way that you CAN experience this restaurant on a budget, though, is to go for their happy hour! They call it a signature hour, and it is featured in their upstairs bar. They have DELICIOUS cocktails, with flavors that are so beautifully mixed - like a lime, cilantro, jalepeno martini. Plus, you can try a handful of small appetizers and simple sushi rolls for a reasonable price. read more

Came here for lunch and tried the omakase which comes with 6 courses. My favorite was the black cod, hamachi tartare and the tuna, red snapper and mackeral sushi. The sashimi salad, carpaccio and skate fish in kimchi broth was also pretty good. I also tried the pork belly ramen and I really liked the pork belly although the broth was a little salty. The unadon which comes with huge pieces of eel and foie gras rice was so good. We ended with some mascarpone cheese and peach jelly dessert which was refreshing and I also tried the mango pudding which was ok. Service was great and restaurant was very modern and upscale. Everything was exquisite and the quality of fish - it just melted in your mouth like butter. We got the "Matcha Matcha Matcha" for dessert and it wasn't very sweet but we liked that. The famous Iron Chef's own restaurant in Philadelphia is, sorry to say, sorely lacking. It's not that the food's bad. It's perfectly adequate. But that's the problem. For the prices they charge, the food here ought to be nothing less than incredible. But Philly has a lot of great Japanese restaurants, and Morimoto's food fails to stand out as exceptional in comparison. And it certainly doesn't feel worth the $100 or so it'll cost you to eat here. This is a just a place for rich people to go so they can say they've eaten an expensive meal. If you're not looking for bragging rights or trying to impress somebody, just go to another Japanese restaurant. read more

Hands down the best sushi (and sushi happy hour) in Philadelphia. Having lived in New York City and Singapore, I am a sushi snob. Morimoto wowed me when I came in for happy hour. The quality of the fish was unparalleled, close only to the beast places in NYC. The spicy yellowtail is the highest quality I've probably ever had (and was only $6!) The California roll is made with real crab, not crabstick (crab flavored fish strands) (also only $6!) The gyoza are the best I've ever had and hand made to order. The service is on point. The atmosphere in the upstairs bar area (where you have to get happy hour) is a cross between psychedelic and ultra modern. After eating here, I can't go anywhere else for sushi in Center City. The happy hour prices are phenomenal, the quality is second to none, and the presentation is perfect. The dinner menu looks great and reasonably priced. Highly recommend. read more

Taste and quality fell short, but everything else was nice.... This is the famous Morimoto restaurant that I finally had the chance to experience. Decor, service and everything about the place is really nice. We went all out and got the tasting menu and there were about 7-8 dishes varying in quality and taste. Starter plate was some kind of fish tartare served over a soy based sauce....amazing. Second was raw sliced white fish drenched in a soy/sesame sauce...pretty good. Next was a Sashimi plate; pretty basic with nothing that wowed us. Blackened cod was over blackened for some of our guests, but flavor was great. Next was a skate dish and that was a little disappointing; some guests didn't like the texture and flavor and ended up just not finishing the plate. Peking Duck was a huge let down...burnt, overcooked and tasted really low quality. Final dish was nigiri plate probably offered as a filler and lacked any real flare. Dessert was some kind of cake...underwhleming. Final thoughts, most dishes were just not prepared with the quality and umami flavor that I was hoping to experience from a tasting menu. For the money we spent, there are tons of places that can do japanese better. read more

Not sure where to start this review, but I would not recommend the Seasonal Omakase. It was definitely an experience but would not do it again at Morimoto. We were a little disappointed in the fact that there was not more sushi options. The Wagu was an additional $25 I was pleased with the juiciness and tenderness. The ambiance and decor of the restaurant was great but the lighting isn't so great, which makes pictures look bad. Although our Omakase experience wasn't up to our expectations we will consider returning for the regular menu. read more

My favorite Japanese restaurant in the US without a doubt. The surrounds are earthy and vibrant, kind of like Kanye's Yeezy mansion but with more taste & ambiance. I did the omakase, because if you're going to a place with a rep like Morimoto's how could you not? I won't waste your time waxing poetic about each individual dish - part of the fun is being surprised by the unique presentation and flavor of all the dishes. It wasn't too light or too heavy, the amount of food served is just right and I had virtually no complaints about any of it. Morimoto's was fantastic. I have read other reviews that said it was loud. We found the noise level to be average. We easily had a conversation and could hear our server with no problem. Décor is interesting and fun. We loved the lighting. Not too dim, not too bright. The service is absolutely phenomenal. You are taken care of from the moment you walk in the door. A lovely young girl checked our coats and brought us to our table. The table service is a collective effort among multiple servers. For example; I spilled some green tea. In 10 seconds someone was there to wipe the table. We were very impressed with the service, which was not pretentious at all. Everyone was extremely friendly, sincere and welcoming. The food was also wonderful. We had the softshell crab sushi, spicy salmon sushi and tempura rock shrimp for appetizers. The sushi was perfect and the tempura shrimp had a light sauce with a nice kick! I had the Ishi Yaki Bop (yellowtail) which is prepared at the table in a hot stone bowl. Very nice presentation; plenty of food and very, very tasty. My husband had the Seafood Toban Yaki; the entire ocean in a bowl. It was full of shellfish and scallops in an incredible sake/soy/butter sauce. Really amazing! It was a wonderful experience and we would definitely go back. We want to try the Omakase menu. Cheap crap sold at a very high price. I will not be returning. Eating in center city sucks. You have to be a millionaire to get drunk because they water down the drinks. I had a Long Island--overpriced and SMALL-mostly soda. $18 is too much for a Long Island. With tip and tax it's $21! A Long Island should never be over $10...unless it's a top shelf version. $18 is ridiculous. $21 is a blatant ripoff. The waitress was prolly laughing. I can't blame her. I only went because I have a friend who for some reason likes Asian dining and wanted to meet there. I'm just not a fan of sushi if it's not all you can eat. Sushi is sushi to me. He kept asking how my food was and I'm like "it's sushi." It all taste the same. I prefer when it's not $200 a PLATE. Honestly it is worth visiting Morimoto just for the ambiance and great service. The food is very good, and the drink selection is very impressive. The fish entree was seriously amazing, so tender, sweet and flavorful with a touch of mango. The edamame was perfectly seasoned with the right amount of saltiness. for my drink I got one with pumpkin and cinnamon something and it was so good! I thought the sushis were pretty average that you could get at other places for cheaper. For dessert we got almost everything on the menu and the favorite was the light and fluffy cheesecake (pretty much mousse). The hot lava ball is worth it just for the awesome presentation, I thought it had too strong of a liquor aftertaste. Overall this is a great place for a special occasion or celebration for groups that love Asian food and strong drinks, with impeccable service! read more

The only negative thing I would say about our experience is that the restaurant is poorly labeled from the outside and the doors have a weirdly tinted glass so it was hard to find. I ordered their lunch omakase and was pleasantly surprised by how nutritious yet tasty each dish was. Loved their sake and strawberry panna cotta -- was so light, fragrant, berryful, creamy but not rich, and a pleasure to daintily carve out with my spoon. Also loved the beautiful and minimalistic design of the panna cotta, felt whole and natural. Another highlight was the toro tartare; I loved the addition of the crispy shallots that instantly perked up the texture of the tartare with a subtle crunch. The miso sea bass was also a delight; it was so smooth and fatty and melted in my mouth. I enjoyed the fresh wasabi (which makes a huge difference) and the yuzu sauce in the carpaccio. Unfortunately, apart from the flounder (?) in the sushi set, the other sushi was not memorable and felt a bit dehydrated, hence the four star rating. However, I deeply enjoyed all the cooked fish dishes, carpaccio, and tartare. Also, the ambience was modern and futuristic; I felt like I was in a neon spaceship, especially with the long candles. Ok, so Today we went to Morimoto and it was much awaited. Overall I find it hard to give the restaurant 6 out of 10 (not taking into account price of meals) Ambiance: I didn't like the ambiance, especially those green and red lights. It some how didn't connect with the kind of cuisine. Service: not bad, but just meets expectations Food: we chose 8 course seasonal option. 1. Tuna tartare- excellent 2. Potato soup with umami- below average because the soup was missing depth and umami didn't work well with soup. On it own, umami was good, but it just didn't add much to soup. 3. Sashimi - excellent 4. Lobster with red saffron and butter - nothing great 5. Steak - good 6. Sushi - average, just average 7. Dessert - below average and I can't remember one of the courses, so probably that was also not memorable. RJ brought me here for my birthday. This is a beautiful restaurant, and our server Alice was very friendly and knowledgeable. There is a dress code, and we dressed up but there were several men in jeans. RJ was trying to convince me to get the Omakase chef tasting, but I was afraid it would be too weird. Alice spoke to the chefs, and advised me that nothing was too crazy, and she thought I would like everything so we went with it.RJ ordered a few sushi rolls but I was so overwhelmed with all my courses that I have no idea what he had! I know he loved it though. My first course was tuna tartare with wasabi and caviar. I have never eaten caviar but decided to be brave. And...I never need to eat it again. But the tuna was fresh and full of flavor, and delicious. Something crunchy was freaking me out but Alice said it was just scallions. At this point I had put all my trust in Alice! Second course was whitefish in some kind of rich, almost beefy sauce, amazing! I was already worried this was going to be a ridiculous amount of food. I think the third course was a lamb meatball but I'm not sure, and can't tell from the picture. I forgot to write this one down, but I know I loved it. Fourth course was black cod which was seriously one of the best pieces of fish I have eaten. I was sad when it was gone. Fifth course was an icy palate cleanser. Sixth course was skate wing. I would never have ordered this or thought I would eat it. However, it was truly phenomenal. It was light and flaky and literally melted in my mouth, not as all what I expected. Seventh course was Waygu beef. I was a little afraid because the last time I had kobe beef at another restaurant it tasted like grass, literally grass. Waygu beef is nothing like that. It was rich and sweet and melted in my mouth. I did not need a knife, and it was silky smooth, buttery and so delicious. Eighth course was sushi. I knew I wasn't going to be able to eat everything so I tasted it and then asked to pack that up and take it home. The ninth course was dessert and I have no idea what it was because RJ took that one and ordered me the deconstructed s'mores. It comes out as a huge chocolate ball that the server set on fire. Inside is a delicious pillow of marshmallow, chocolate, ganache and graham something with overproofed rum. Words can not describe how beautiful and amazing this was. I had a stellar omakase tonight with the sake pairing. It was pricey, but I was treating myself and it was worth it. Highlights included the snow beef, the wagyu and tuna tartare, and some incredible dessert. This is perfect for a very special occasion or because you are worth it! Went here for my birthday a year ago, sushi was delicious, but not my favorite in the city. They had some really cool elaborate dessert options. Wouldn't come back, can definitely get better bang for your buck at other sushi places in the city. read more
