After the review was online for a short while, I got a call from Williamson County Detective R. Jenkins, informing me Jodi Phillips had filed (a false) an harassment criminal complaint against me. If I'd wanted to push back, I could have followed up by filing a false charge complaint, her complaint a total fabrication. In fact, I hadn't spoken to her since she walked off my unfinished job. Jodi Phillips was, without a doubt, the worst, most dishonest, contractor I've ever had the misfortune to hire. I don't know if she has some kind of disorder, but she blames anyone who criticizes her, saying it's the client's fault, not hers. She was rarely on the job site. She finds someone that has a crew. The crew she hired for my job did stone work and concrete. They didn't know anything about plants, drainage or drip irrigation, which is what I needed done. The stone and concrete work was very good. Everything else was a disaster. I've had to tear out the irrigation and replace it. Same for the drain lines...none of them worked. I found several that were buried in the yard with no outlets. Same for a driveway channel drain, dead ended in the concrete, no outlet. So many dead plants from not following planting directions in the contract. I was talking to a laborer installing plants. He said he was really a roofer and didn't know anything about landscaping. In the end, Jodi refused to return and address the myriad problems. On Angie's List, she attacked my character, accused me of mental illness, stalking her, and more. She said she was in Arizona for the rest of the summer, grieving over a death in the family and couldn't do anything about my complaints. I drove to her house the very next day. There she was in her front yard, beer in hand. She went ballistic when she saw me. I stayed in the roadside, did not trespass, and photographed Lyin' Jodi in her yard. I don't understand the good reviews. I guess even a blind pig finds an acorn once in a while A year or more later, I ran into the stone & concrete sub contractor that did my job for Jodi. He told me she had screwed him over and was considering suing her. I have lots of photos documenting the inept work I had to re-do: drain lines buried in the dirt with no outlet; drain lines not connected underground; channel drain in driveway with no outlet; rocks piled in yard (mowing hazard!!); Japanese Aurelia planted on top of nandina; Jodi in her front yard with a brew after claiming she was in Arizona. Our sloped and shaded backyard was having erosion problems. The mature trees prevented any grass from growing in this part of our yard. The dirt that was washing down the slope with each rain had clogged a previously installed french drain and was washing up onto our patio. It looked terrible! After other contractors recommended simply covering the slope in rock, Jodi (owner) gave us a comprehensive plan to install retaining walls, repair the drain, and install beautiful landscaping with drip irrigation. The whole project went very well. Her crew had clearly been working with her for a very long time. They showed up when they said they would, worked hard, and cleaned up after themselves. Even after the project was completed, she has been helpful in coaching us through watering. I was especially pleased that she was able to re-use existing materials including stone edging and river rock. The back yard is beautiful and finally functional. We had a lot of rain this week with widespread flooding in Central Texas. The drainage worked beautifully! No erosion at all. Overall, very pleased with this project. I hired Morning Star to replace a large hardscape ground cover with mulch. They also replaced a smaller hardscape area with Zoysia sod. The work involved removing a large quantity of small river rock stones and pulling up the weed cloth beneath it. Irrigation system was expanded to accommodate the additional Zoysia sod. The work went very smoothly. Jodi and her team were both responsive and professional. I was impressed by how hard and fast they worked in removing and hauling away all that river rock and weed cloth - it was grueling work but they pulled it off efficiently and with good spirit. Stay away. The owner is unhinged. We made an appointment over a week ago. We spoke to Jodi on the phone and she was pleasant at the time and asked us to send pictures. We texted a few times. We reconfirmed our appointment the morning of the appointment and she said she was running 15 minutes late. Then she says she cannot find our street on her GPS which is odd as both of my cars find it all the time. We just moved here so we are not that familiar with directions. Jodi texted us for directions and we told her we were not familiar with Austin and to use Waze or google maps. She said she couldn't because she was driving. We asked her to pull over to call us but she wouldn't. How it is she can text while driving but not use an app or stop for second and figure out where she was. She told us she lived Austin for 45 years but she is so uneducated and uninformed that she could not figure out an address in South Austin less than a mile from downtown and near Zilker Park While we were waiting she just cancelled on us telling me I was rude while texting her. Mind you I took a day off of work and waited a week for her to show up. She could have easily looked up our address in advance. Every delivery service has made it to our house. Well we started with the idea of expanding an existing patio by approx 400 sf flagging the new and old patio, flagging the existing pathway to the gate (approx. 195 sf),repairing / sanding/re-staining the existing patio columns, moving the hot tub, building a small pergola off of the patio, building a smaller pergola in a side yard for our 5 dogs, and installing outdoor lighting in the existing landscaped beds. Then we got started and after discussions and ongoing conversations with Jodi and her team we ended up with twice as much pergola coverage, an extra patio for the dogs area, Replacement of the existing patio columns to match the pergolas, lengthening of the pathway flagging to come all the way to the front driveway, a new border to replace a smaller one (and match the new work), removal of a couple of plants, an addition to the existing patio, and reworking the sprinkler system to accommodate all of this!!! OK, first of all I have read almost every review Jodi has gotten and all I can say is she is VERY deserving of praise. Is she busy and sometimes not able to get back to you in a moments notice? Sure, however my experience wouldn't suggest that as I got nothing but immediate and continuous communication from the initial call to the end of the project (and after). Heck the only time there was a delay in hearing from her was when I wanted to get a check in her hands and she politely and calmly said, I'll come by in a couple of days to pick it up. We began after some initial conversation and design ideas with Jodi, and selected a rough patio layout. Jodi was accommodating, friendly, very communicative (texts and emails were flying back and forth feverishly), and all this in the first few days of us talking with her for the first time. She used her experience and expertise to recommend things that would look good, feel fluid, work with our lifestyle / usage desires, and that would in the end give us a place to spend countless hours barbequing, lounging with friends, relaxing with our puppies, and enjoying the Texas weather to the fullest. Now some perspective... I and my fiancee are SUPER PICKY and have very definite ideas about what we liked. We were not disappointed... Jodi and her crew (which is amazing) helped us make decisions along the way to account for unknowns and design changes that were made from day 0 to the last day. As an example, Jodi took our desires and told us to go see one of 2 kinds of rock to use for the flagging. She said we could use whatever we liked, but based on our conversations she thought we would like one of these 2 the best. It is hard to guess what the finished product will look like so her expertise here helped immensely. It limited our focus so we could concentrate on the other details, like the shape of the patio. Initially we were going with a more fluid rounded look, but after some lengthy discussions and 2 cans of marking paint we elected to simply straiten the lines our for more usable space. Jodi, continuously encouraged us to make changes, try marking different shapes, look online or at the dozens of pictures she sent us of comparable and previous projects to get ideas. She always told us, nothing is permanent and changes can be made anytime. She was very flexible and never pushy about getting us to "finalize" anything. But eventually we did decide on several items to at least get started. As it all started to come together and we could see the project turning into the vision we had early on (AND MORE!!). Jodi was awesome throughout the process, stopping by every other day to see the progress, bring the crew snacks, talk through minor questions we had regarding additional changes we wanted to make to add steps where the patio was higher than we expected. All of this was done without one quirky look, or disdainful response; just a polite " Whatever ya'll guys want! " and then it was done. Period. At the end there were minor things (again we are picky) that we wanted changed or redone a bit differently and all was done right then. In fact we added so many small requests that I thought it would extend the timeline.... nope, done faster that she expected. A testament to the crews. They are skilled craftsman, all of them. And the masons are simply artists... watching them piece together the entire patio out of different sized pieces of oddly shaped rock was amazing. Heck, she was so polite she didn't want to ask for the draws we had discussed and agreed to early on. She and her crews made the entire process (although daunting) a breeze. She is by far the best contractor I have ever met.. If you can get time on her busy busy schedule (that should tell you something), take advantage of her liveliness, spunky nature, dedication to make it beautiful and fantastic from beginning to end, and her fair prices at your earliest possible convenience. Jodi and her crew are fantastic to work with-this is our third job with her. We started with Jodi evaluating our lot and existing landscaping in front yard. Removed boxwood foundation plantings along entire front of house, removed existing landscaping at street. Replanted at front of house with Texas native drought resistant plants and trees, planted additional Texas native drought resistant plants at street side of lot; included river rockscaping. Created a very natural looking riverbed of riverstone in our backyard where natural storm runoff goes, creating a lovely bed that also controls for soil erosion. Planted side yard of home to accommodate extremely rocky Edwards Plateau soil with more Texas natives that will thrive in the poor soil and hold it against rainfall. Final finishing touches--Jodi installed landscape lighting that we have wanted for years! Uplighting on new and existing trees. Installed new outdoor ceiling fan at porch to create a lovely oasis at the front of our home, and then power washed/cleaned and oiled our languishing ipe wood deck. Jodi listened to what I was hoping to accomplish with the front and side yard, and really delivered EXACTLY what I was hoping for! Jodi is so knowledgeable about plants and our climate-and she also is extremely particular about the quality of every aspect of the job--spending a lot of time choosing the best specimens of plants, staying in constant touch with me if the plants we'd discussed just didn't look at good at the nursery as she wanted, and offering alternative options. She is also very conscious of budget, and works extremely hard to find the best quality for the best price - be it a tree or tons of river rock. And to seal the deal, Jodi is absolutely delightful to spend time with. She is passionate about her work, and loves to share what she knows. The icing on the cake is Jodi's crew-Rafe is a real gem, and let's not forget her electrician, who worked extremely hard right as our nasty cold weather took hold before Thanksgiving to complete our landscape lighting. Jodi has been great to work with. We waited a bit to start our project, but we were in no real rush given the quality in the pictures we saw from work she has done for others. The wait was well worth it as our newly flagged upper patio looks awesome transitioning into our existing wooden deck which they re-stained, then the flagged concrete addition that her team did extending out from the wood deck looks fantastic. The prior owners of this house left us an oddly placed (square in the middle of the backyard) and overgrown vegetable garden. It also looks like the prior owners started to build a pergola and just gave up, leaving a half-assed structure next to the crappy garden. Jodi's team cleanly demoed all that and dropped a beautiful flagstone patio in it's place. Sweet. Jodi communicated with us throughout the process and was always focused on making sure the project came out beautiful in the end. She accommodated requests we had along the way to make sure everything was to our liking, gave us a fair deal for all the work they did, and has been willing to work with us on some work/foot traffic grass damage to get us back to normal after all the great work her team has done the past couple weeks. Second Project with Morningstar! The work last summer was outstanding, so I didn't think twice about who to call for a new cedar pergola on our patio. Jodi and her carpenter came out to scope the project and design a custom pergola to wrap around a circular stone patio. The result is absolutely stunning. They built a wide pergola with a fan shaped canopy to compliment the curved patio they built for us last summer. They stained the whole thing a deep reddish brown, ran power to it, and installed an outdoor power outlet for lighting. Morningstar Landscaping just finished a pretty big project for my 1200-square foot home- new landscaping in the front and side plus limestone edging plus a Oklahoma stone walkway plus Oklahoma flagstone veneer for sidewalk and porch. And wow is everything beautiful! Jodi did a great job listening and bringing her creativity to the project. We had a very old deck that needed to be removed and replaced with something, but we didn't know what. Also, we had to deal with strict requirements of impervious coverage on our property. Jodi had several ideas that we all loved, but the one thing we really loved was tile but didn't know anything about the process. This was an extensive project and we still are amazed at the results. Jodi designed everything, ordered custom tile in, and just blew us away during this 6 week project. She even worked with a structural engineer so inspections seemed a breeze. We went from nothing to a gorgeous covered patio with pergola, a large kitchen area, flowers beds incorporated into the patio, and a stunning fireplace. They were very respectful and clean during construction, and Jodi was great on communication. Cannot tell you how many compliments we receive and jaw drops when our friends and neighbors come over. I had new flower beds installed this summer all around my house then needed to change contractors to finish the job and do the planting. Jodi responded quickly with a reasonable estimate. Jodi worked closely with me on plant suggestions and she had lots of great ideas. The crew worked hard and left the yard nicely cleaned up - they even raked my gravel path before leaving. We needed the exterior lighting of our 1950s house updated and electricity brought to our garden shed. Jodi sent David and several workers over the course of two weeks to do an excellent job.
