This place is bigger than I remembered. The tea selection was daunting and I ended up shopping by color. My dad, who had sent me for lavash, had asked for tea but having failed to adequately culture me, his daughter, I had no idea what to buy. I bought the orange box. The bread, however... that's still lovely and somehow always seems to be so fresh that the steam is warming the bags. I bought five varieties of bread (barbarei, lavash, and a few I didn't know) and brought them home to my happy dad. (They made up for the bad tea choice.) read more

It's an ethnic grocery store so you have to keep this in mind...I think it's one of the better ones in Chicago if you are looking for middle eastern spices, frozen items and ingredients. I think their prices are fair too. read more

Great variety but a shameful customer experience at the register. Questionable whether I will return or not after this. The customer service agent at the front is so careless and has poor customer service. He is tall and dark haired. Not one word was stated to me as I was checking out. No hi, how are you, and no thank you at the end. Literally not one word was stated. Very halal, little boy Rayyan was not very nice, but nice Persian variety. I really enjoyed lamb shank it was excellent, the lamb leg was good also, nice tea variety. My son really liked that they sell prime. Overall very nice, I would definitely recommend to other people. read more

Previously I used to buy, Mediterranean & Near Eastern groceries from on line vendors. Of course the shipping cost was added expense. I learned about Sahar International Supermarket. In itself as a supermarket, it is very impressive. The meat counter has excellent selections, and fresh lamb is uniquely impressive. Try the lamb loin roast (requires advance ordering), it is excellent. A chef described lamb loin roast, "the most delicious meat", try it at Sahar, you will not be disappointed. Among other high lights is an entire section with olives, shelf after shelf including selections from dried olives, kalamatas, & green imported olives. One product which I love, is the chickpeas cookies, an excellent choice to accompany a cup of tea or coffee. And of course the Persian nougats anther delicious sweet from middle east. I am trying to keep this short, but spices, herbs as well as jams and condiments deserve honorable mention, for freshness and high quality. read more

I don't know where to start, I shopped here often as most of the ethnic grocery items I wanted could only be found here. On multiple occasion one of the items was rotten and I mentioned this to the cashier and he suggested that if this happens again I should bring it back for a refund. Boy did I make a mistake, when I asked for a refund the cashier goes silent and the owner shows up; man is he arrogant, is he rude and scruples. Guy was ready to cut my throat over $10 and kept yelling at me and refused to sell me anything he had the audacity of grabbing the shopping basket and throwing it behind the counter. I've been coming here for the past two years to buy Middle Eastern/Turkish products. This supermarket is huge compared to a lot of the other international grocery stores around the Chicago and surrounding area. They have a huge assortment of Middle Eastern/Turkish brands and you can basically find a lot of things that you would usually get at a supermarket from back home (for an example, they carry lots of basic/necessary Lebanese products that I used to purchase everyday before I moved to the US). The prices are a bit steep, but half of these products are imported so it makes sense. It actually isn't too bad. They bake fresh bread on Sunday's, but the rack empties out in less than an hour, so be sure to get there on time if you want fresh bread. However, if you don't catch the fresh bread, you can always purchase the frozen ones and they taste just as good. They also carry a lot of different packaged Middle Eastern/Turkish sweets from local restaurants, like Libanais, and I always tend to buy a few boxes for my coworkers or for other occasions. The staff and the owners are very helpful and extremely professional. I once went there to get specific ingredients for a Middle Eastern recipe, and the staff literally helped me find every single thing I needed on my list. They even took their time to remove all the fat from the meat like I requested. Speaking of which, the meat is also super fresh and tastes really good. This is a amazingly awesome store. The family that owns and operates is the nicest people I've ever met. I have been doing business with them for 27 years. They were at a smaller location but just as their business grew they grew in kindness. I will shop with them as long as they are open. I encourage you to stop in. Their meat selection is great! They have a excellent choices for all kinds of food items spices teas even soaps that smells so good and even some of the produce was very interesting the lemons I bought some lemons they're called sweet lemons I believe and they're not sour like the lemons we buy normally in the grocery store so I I appreciate you know trying new foods and new things and I really enjoy shopping at this grocery store it's not close to me but the trip is worth it and it has all types of cookware kitchenware items their meats are always looking good and fresh and they have a soray of dry fruits like dates and apricots they have lots of different types of olives and a good selection of Frozen Foods it's a clean store and mind you this is a a grocery store that doesn't sell pork I don't believe well maybe they do I don't remember seeing any but they probably do I don't know but it's just an interesting nice store I would recommend going during the time when kids are in school so that you won't have to deal with a lot of the traffic early in the morning maybe Saturdays or weekends probably would work but it's a little busy in that area but it's all worth the trip you won't be disappointed read more

Sahar is apparently a fairly new grocery store on Kedzie. I wandered in and was pleasantly surprised by the wide selection of Turkish and Middle Eastern goods. I bought some cherry juice from Turkey, a candy bar from Palestine, and a box of couscous from France. I felt like buying more stuff! Reasonably priced Zabiha meat. I got chicken drumsticks and beef stew meat. I also purchased a whole lamb shoulder (2.99/lb, came out to less than $30). What I did not like is that they did not clean the meat properly and did not separate it how I asked. My husband was not pleased with it when I got home. I will try them again and update if they get the lamb situation together. The other meat otherwise was just fine. read more

I had the absolute best chicken kabob and falafel sandwich there! It had lots of veggies: tomato, pickle, red cabbage, onion and seasonings. It reminded me of the Turkish kebab stands all over the place in Rome, Italy. A very small market in general but it has floor to ceiling shelves packed. They must have an inventory of many thousands of items. I also needed self burning charcoal for incense; they had it. A wide selection of tea. Delicious spinach pies, you get the idea. One minor complaint - when I first noticed it there was a grand opening special of buy 3 sandwiches get 1 free, the following week it was gone. They should have left the promotion going several months to attract new customers and to ensure I would keep going back every few days. One other minor complaint and it would help the business save credit card fees - you have to pay at the takeout counter separately from the grocery counter. read more

This supermarket is awesome! It has everything you need to make the perfect Middle Eastern meal. Nice sized parking lot so you don't have to pay for parking like the markets on Devon. It is a pretty big store and is well kept - very organized with directory signs in each aisle. The meat section is very clean and the prices are very reasonable. The workers didn't give me a weird look because I'm Asian. I certainly respect that. Also, all of the breads are freshly made! You can see them make it too. Highly recommended. These guys have moved on up from a small store to a super market that has become huge. Here's why: their staff are quick in taking your orders when ordering meat, cheese, fish, or other cooking meats available when needed. They have large selection of items when needed that are from other countries that none other have available. What I find a rarity in purchasing cooking foods is their Egyptian Spinach (AKA Emlookhia). Most importantly, they recently opened a small corner counter that serves delicious foods that includes home made homus, koofta, chicken kabob, and chicken koofta. They also server rostaire chicken for only a spanking price of 5.99. read more
