I've been hearing about Mosaic for a while now from a couple of different groups and finally checked it out when I was craving some wings. I haven't been here since it was an Italian restaurant so it was a pleasant surprise to see the filipino/vietnamese fusion menu. Honestly, pairs so well with the beers on tap and to line your stomach. Had to go big and try a couple options on their menu since I couldn't decide. ____________ + Bahn Xeo Tacos - I've never seen this on a menu before and it's really creative! I like the idea and they were definitely topped with a ton of food but the taco itself didn't hold up so well. Would be better to have a more crisp texture but I ended up just eating this one with utensils. + BBH - Great option to try if you want something soupy. I don't usually get BBH and would go for the pho but something was calling to me this day. Had a nice spice and noodles were chewy but would opt to get something else next time. + Fish Sauce Wings - Would 10/10 go back for the wings since they were massive, had a great crunch, and saucy without being drenched. Came out piping hot (almost too hot to eat) but worth every bite. + Fried Spring Rolls - Solid options if you want something to share with the table and smaller bites. ____________ All in all, they have a great selection of beers, ciders, and even wine on tap. I'll definitely be coming back to try their other wing flavors!

Back on taco Tuesday. And boy is it busy. I ordered the birria tacos combo. (Taco Tuesday special) So good and still delicious. Also got a dopplebock beer. My husband got the wings with fish sauce and extra spicy. "Very crispy spicy and flavorful" (his words). They were very busy today so I won't penalize them for the fact that they completely forgot my order. But they acted quickly to recover from the mistake, and I actually think that should be rewarded. This place is small so not a lot of seating indoors during this winter season. But they do have heated seating outside and covered.

For the last couple visits, the soup has comes out lukewarm served in the plastic bowl even for dine in. So for the price, small bowl and tepid broth just not satisfying. Food on the verge of being too salty. Still a great spot for afterwork pints. Beer selection is great but beertender gal seems unenthusiastic for the lively vibe.

Went here again and got to experience the crab soup (weekend special). It was SO good. Of course, had to get the obligatory pork belly skewers and green beans. The fish sauce wings were also very very good! Service great as always. Got to sit outside - it was a cooler day but the outdoor heaters made it perfect.

10/10!!!! I can't recommend this place enough. The food is amazing and the beer selection is perfection! Get the chicken wings and make sure to get the Mini Banh Xeo Tacos. This spot has so many gluten free options too. There is a large heated patio and indoor seating. This is a gem in St. John's and I want to go back all the time.

Very friendly service at this tap house with delicious Vietnamese and Filipino bites. Sake One Momokawa Organic sake on tap, Suon Nuong Pork Ribs, Mini Banh Xeo Tacos Pork Belly & Shrimp, Cha Gio Spring Rolls Pork and a hazy IPA: Urban Family Chromatic Chameleons. All were tasty!

    Beef Pho and fried tofu

Had a great Day Date with the husband. We came for the weekly special of BOGO beef Pho. Their Pho was clean, flavorful and you have to eat it with the pickled garlic and jalapeños (game changer.) We also had fried Tofu from the HH menu and that was crispiest tofu I've ever had! All I have to say is, we will be back for more!!

Walked in on a weeknight to grab some beer and bites with friends, and was blown away by how awesome everything was! The wings were super crispy and delicious (maybe my current favorite in portland!). And the fried rice cake was a real sleeper hit, not something you see very often but they really blew it out of the park! The ban xeo tacos were also tasty, and a really fun take on the traditional vietnamese dish. Everything was cooked fresh, hot, and tasty. Service was friendly and the atmosphere was warm and cozy, great place to relax with a cold pint! My only complaint would be the predominance of ipa's. With so many taps it would have been nice to see a little more variety, but don't let that stop you because there was plenty of good beer to go around!

Wings, Banh Xeo Tacos, and Taro Pancakes

What a unique taphouse with a great taplist and creative twist on Vietnamese cuisine for their food menu! We got a pint of the Sun River Stout (which is always great) and a cider to share, as well as a few food items. Their Bot Chien Trung was my favorite thing. The Taro Pancake was soso crispy while the eggs were fluffy and soft. Great texture contrast and flavors. Their Canh Ga Nuoc Nam were also some of the best wings we've had in town. Crispy on the outside while moist on the inside ans droused completely in spicy fish sauce. This was indeed a great pairing for the beers. Their Banh Xeo Tacos were decent, in my opinion. I liked how well-stuffed they were and their portion was great, especially with three tacos per order. However, they could have been crispier so it's a unique idea but can be improved upon. Space was big and cozy with indoors and heated outdoors seatings. Staffs were also very friendly. A super fun spot to grab some cold ones and tasty food.

Clockwise from top left: Pomelo jellyfish salad, king mushroom skewer, chicken skewer, pork belly skewer, beef la lot wraps.

Every time friends or family have visited the Portland area, I've raved about Magna and told them how much better I thought the food was compared with what we have in Seattle. So it's disappointing to say that tonight, I hesitate to recommend it. To be clear, the food was just as good as I remembered. Unfortunately, the service and overall experience left me frustrated and confused. We had an 8:15 PM reservation at the chef's counter. The restaurant was busy when we arrived, but we were greeted and seated without issue. After being seated, however, we waited about 10-15 minutes before our server returned to take our order and ask what we wanted to drink. We then waited another 5-10 minutes for water--and ultimately had to ask another server/expeditor for it. We ordered four skewers and lumpia to start. At one point, one of our mains came out instead. We realized that the noodles belonged to the couple sitting next to us, who had ordered them. It was a busy night, so we were understanding and didn't make a big deal out of the mix-up. Our drink arrived, followed by the skewers, and then our mains began coming out--but still no lumpia. It seemed that order had simply been lost. Again, things happen, especially on a busy night, and we were willing to let it go. And eventually got our order. What really bothered me was what happened afterward. Our grilled chicken and crab noodles were dropped off by another server, and that was essentially the last interaction we had with our servers. Once things at the counter started to calm down, neither server checked on us even once. Not a "How is everything?" Not a "Can I get you anything else?" Nothing. Meanwhile, our original server repeatedly walked past us, checked on the guests sitting next to us, chatted with other employees, took shots, and ate popcorn. I'm not bothered by employees having fun or taking a moment to relax--I'm bothered that she seemed to have time for all of that but never once acknowledged us as guests. The contrast was especially noticeable because the couple next to us was offered dessert, ordered dessert, and continued enjoying their experience while we sat there with empty plates in front of us, essentially waiting for an opportunity to get someone's attention- we tried to get the other chef's attention but he was busy cooking or couldn't hear us, tried to flag down the lady that sat us but she would just zoom past us. Eventually, the chef came back from his break and asked how everything was. He also had to get our server's attention so that we could get our check. After a couple more laps to the back and watching the table next to us enjoy their dessert, our server finally picked up our card. Within a minute, she returned with the check for us to sign. I genuinely hate writing a review like this because I really like Magna's food. I've recommended this restaurant enthusiastically to friends and family, and I came in tonight expecting the same experience I remembered. Unfortunately, great food can only carry an experience so far. Tonight, we felt overlooked and, frankly, like an inconvenience rather than valued guests. It's a shame because the food was as good as I remembered--but the service was disappointing enough that I don't see myself going back anytime soon.

It is probably relevant, though, to mention that two of the 3 people in our party were very small Filipinas. The entrees were excellent. Those were, in no particular order, lechon, Bicol Express and pork belly. We also got a large side of lumpia, which was not bad, but rather, decidedly average, so it suffered in comparison to the superb entrees. Additionally, they sliced it into small diagonal-cut (think of the way ziti pasta is cut) pieces, which I imagine was done for the sake of presentation, but I didn't find it visually appealing in the least. No matter, it's a mere trifle compared to the overall meal. The Sapin Sapin dessert was also fantastic, and somehow we made room for that after eating the generous entrees. The service was attentive and professional without being overbearing. Definitely coming back here again, and so are the two Filipinas (Tacloban and Mindanao). I think that sums it up neatly, right?

Bonus: they're open late (until 1 AM per Yelp). Since Google showed incorrect hours, we called ahead before making the drive across town from Happy Valley. Perks: -Free street parking after 7 PM and on holidays -Open late (a big plus in Portland) -Casual, trendy vibe Ordering was frustrating. The cell signal was terrible due to its half basement floor. The WiFi passcode wasn't posted, we had to leave our table to ask a staff for it, and even then, it didn't work for either of our phones. The intent of a digital-only ordering system clashed hard with the reality. I suggested they keep a few printed menus on hand as backup. Kiaha, the owner, was incredibly attentive and responsive. When she heard about the ordering issue, she came to our table, apologized sincerely, and took our order herself. She even comped a few items, which we truly appreciated. Food: Not quite there yet -The surprise winner was the Volcano Broccoli, flavorful with great texture. Would order again. -Steak Bites were overcooked. We weren't asked how we wanted them cooked. The sauce added a little flavor but didn't save the dish. -Fried Tofu Plate came with mac and cheese, green salad, and white rice. All three were underseasoned and forgettable. The tofu itself was oddly crunchy in a stale kind of way, and the vinegar dipping sauce didn't add much. -Mac and cheese lumpia sounded creative, but it just didn't land, bland and kind of "meh." -The 15-hour pulled pork bao had generous filling, but the pork lacked richness, flavor, and texture issues. The bao was served cold, which didn't help. -Mocktails (we tried both available ones: pineapple, lime, and something else) were okay but not memorable. Super cozy 4x6 feet single stall neutral restroom. The scent diffuser was cranked up way too high for such a tiny room, almost overwhelming. We came specifically for the pork belly, only to learn it's a weekend only item, a bummer, but not a dealbreaker. The salad was too spicy for me that my mouth was on fire, but those in my party who can tolerate spice enjoyed it. The curries were on the saltier side, but it definitely had the smokiness from the bbq, giving it more depth which I can see why it works so well with all the Thai flavors. If I were to choose one over the other, I would go with the Massaman Curry because the lamb was super tender and the sauce had so much more flavor than the white curry in my opinion.
