My boyfriend and I stopped here on a Friday night for some sigig. I had never had this dish before but was excited to try. We each ordered our own plate. Mine was made both df/gf to met my dietary restrictions. The sigig was made with pork belly and had an egg on top. You can choose to upgrade to sun rice which my boyfriend did. He enjoyed it but not sure if he would get again. I got the mango peach hot sauce which had a kick to it with tons of flavor. 10/10 I would love to buy a bottle and use on my eggs in the morning. I ordered the matcha margarita which to be honest I didn't have high hopes as matcha to me tastes only just okay. However, I was impressed with this drink as it tasted like a less sweet margarita which i enjoyed immensely. Other notes, you pay up front and get a number. While the food was very good -- especially the pork belly -- I was disappointed that an 18% gratuity was automatically added even though there is no table service. Orders are placed at the front like a fast food joint and the process felt a bit disorganized. The first time we encountered this restaurant, was when we were looking for another restaurant, but we couldn't find them. We passed this restaurant then, and we wanted to try them out, but they were closing, at 2:00pm. Hubby remembered, this Filipino restaurant, so here we try again. I ordered the Longanisa, housemade Filipino pork sausage and Beef Tapa. And a Side Salad of arugula, red onion, pepperoncini, olive oil, we shared. Hubby thought liked his order. I think they're tasty, but I'm not happy with my Longanisa. I thought, the middle part of the sausage was still pink. See photo. I was eating around it, and ate the egg, and all the salad. As the proud wife of a Filipino husband, I've really grown to love Filipino food over the past 20+ years that we've been together. It's become comfort food for me. And I'm happy to say that during our recent visit to Sun Rice, our meal totally hit the spot and made me feel like I was home. We experienced Sun Rice by attending a private Cho Wines event during an early Saturday afternoon. A perfect opportunity to enjoy our favorite wines and discover new favorite foods. And the weather was gorgeous, so the street was busy with lots of foot traffic. We arrived and were immediately greeted by both the Cho Wines and Sun Rice team members. I'll say this first - this place has Awesome lumpia, which we tried and loved when randomly stopping in last week. Today is where that stopped -- walked in @ 1:40p to grab a surprise order for my wife but the staff was cleaning up already. Door was open and sign says open until 2pm but the workers were Actively shutting down the kitchen. Refused to make lumpia on Mother's Day for a mother during operating hours. Worst experience ever, really ruined my surprise plans & day in general. I met the owner last visit who seemed like a family guy, so I'd expect him to not be proud of his staff conduct. Honestly, as a Filipino, I had high hopes for this place. Lots of friends recommended it to me. I ordered the Pancit Canton, which I think was overpriced and small for the portion. I wasn't that impressed with the taste either-- it was alright. The other thing that rubbed me the wrong way was the forced gratuity ("hospitality fee"). People should be able to tip how much they want and when they feel like it, not feel it forced upon them. We just had dinner there this past Saturday night, loved this place, certainly the best Filipino food we have had in Portland. The Lechon Kawali was great, crispy pork bits and fat that dissolved in your mouth. Then a rustic, grilled chicken dish with squash and beans that was excellent as well. Similar to chicken Inasal I guess, super flavorful, smokey and seasoned to perfection. Came in because of the name catches me. Genius. Found last month tasty pork belly that is freshly made!!! I ordered around 10:30 am. It's the only rice bowl besides Nong's that opened for brunch. Minus 1 star because of the price $17 as of now seems like American is used to crazy price for this kind of to go food... not dine-in restaurant. It's served in cardboard box and plastic fork. I recommend add more pickles to your order since there's no sauce that comes with. The rice is seasoned but I kinda needed something to finish it. Egg is sunny side style if you don't do runny yolk you might need to ask. The guy was very pleasant to deal with. WHAT AN ABSOLUTE GEM!! We first stumbled into Sunrice when we were in the area and were looking for some late night DRUNCHIES and as a Filipina who just recently moved to Portland, I was pleasantly surprised and grateful to learn that PULUTAN (drinking food) with a *modern twist* was within reach. My husband ordered LECHON KAWALI and I ordered the MUSHROOM SISIG. We also shared a side of FRIES. I love that each dish is jam-packed with FLAVOR. I also appreciate that some of the other dishes on the menu can be transformed into a VEGETARIAN dish (for example, you can sub tofu katsu in the chicken sando). At first, I was disappointed with the portion of the meals, but watch out, these dishes are surprisingly filling. Overall, the space and vibes are IMMACULATE! We especially love that some of the seating/table arrangements are perfectly set-up for TAGAYAN, which is a Filipino ritual consisting of an intimate circle of drinking peers, drinks and food included. One of the things I miss the most when I left California is my family's home-cooked Filipino food and Filipinos (LOL!), so thank you, Sunrice for filling that void. I've been on a mission try all the Filipino restaurants in Portland and Sunrice might have to be my top spot as I write this review. There aren't many Filiino restaurants so when I saw their pop up on social media I had to come check them out. No reservation but no issue getting a seat for dinner maybe because they're still a hidden gem? Who knows but I wasn't complaining! Menu is simple but has your staples like bangus, lechon, pancit, etc but with other items like their chicken sandwiches, pork bbq, etc. You will see price points here $14+ which isn't too bad in my book for entrees. I ended up trying the chicken sando, pork sisig, and pancit for my first visit here. Food here was quick and tasty! It was great that when they brought the pancit they even had some calamansi around so we could squeeze it on top. Yum! Nice shrimp inside the dish and chewy noodles. For the chicken sando I enjoyed the panko breading and even on an ube bun. I am a huge ube fan so I loved seeing this. Not your typical filipino dish but it was good if you wanted to try something else. Lastly they brought out the sisig which deviated slightly from what I was expected and had more of a lechon feel as the dish was chunkier and more fried. I didn't mind it as it was cooked well so the pork was crispy and paired well with the steamed rice and egg. All in all, I had a great first visit with the service + food. I am still on the search for a Filipino spot to serve me up some kare-kare but I saw they also serve lechon kawali so will need to get that next time. read more
