Sometimes you're an American staying in a very busy London neighborhood so you don't know you need to make reservations for every freaking dinner even early on week nights. That's how you end up eating the same boring fast food you have back home or you manage to squeeze in just before the dinner rush at casual joints like Mother Mash. In short- you could have eaten somewhere better, but you muffed it. You could have muffed eating here too if it's after 5...if you had your heart set on tatoes and pie I hope you made a reservation.
I don't want to give Mother Mash 4 stars, so I won't. The staff was great but food was boring. Like sure it was serviceable, but where is the flavor? Being a place where one chooses their own combos, Mother Mash looked like it had a leg up vs some old pie shops with that parsley gravy. The parsley liquor might have been more flavorful than the generic brown one we got here. I ordered the Mince Beef Pie with Colcannon for my mash. My partner went with the Steak and Stout Pie with The Champ. The steak pie was superior, at least it had some ale. I preferred my Colcannon to his potatoes. We also ordered a bottle of Victorian Lemonade, it's on the tart side if you've never had it. We'd just had an amazing Sticky Toffee Pudding at Old Compton so we had to order a couple here too. Mother Mash isn't called Sister Sticky for a reason. The puddings here are a bit dry, even with the sauce, and the flavor is a bit flat. We tried the original and the ginger apple for comparison. Didn't love either. Wait, I completely forgot we ordered pan fried green beans. Don't order those. With the conversion rates I'm sure we ended up paying over 5 dollars for a small dish of allegedly garlicky green beans.
Maybe you'll like the puddings more than we did. Maybe you'll like the pies more too. Or maybe, like us, you were just trapped a sea of crowded pubs with nary a free seat for dinner service and were tired of wandering all over after a full day of sightseeing and wanted something more local vs. Nando's or Five Guys. You'll leave Mother Mash full, especially with a brick of sticky toffee pudding in your gut, but not elated. I suppose not every food experience has to be 5 stars. It's only after an evening of mediocre food you can truly appreciate the gems that await you another evening. read more
