Reading the reviews, I didn't know what to expect but it was quite an experience. We came on a Monday afternoon (Labor Day) and there was nobody around. We looked around at the fresh and frozen pies and they looked appealing. As others have mentioned, there are no prices so that was a little disconcerting. A gentleman came and helped us and as noted in prior reviews, he was somewhat gruff but I didn't take it as grumpy or mean. My take, unsubstantiated by any scientific evidence, is that not every store owner is pre-disposed to having a neurotypical customer-centric focus. That being said, we were offered coffee with our pie slices and a place to sit. There is currently a lot of construction going on at the place because the business was hit hard after COVID and then flooding in Vermont in 2023 caused significant damage. My blueberry coffee cake was good. I will say it wasn't worth $8 per slice. As noted, the prices are sky high here. For two slices, two coffees, a small bag of cookies and a peanut butter bar it was $36....$39 if I wanted to pay by card so I opted for cash and saved the $3. Probably if prices were posted, customers would immediately turn around and walk out. When I saw the price of the pie slice, I immediately thought "This is as expensive as Manhattan". I don't mind as much when I shell out big bucks for food there because it's expected but it was a bit of a shock to see those prices in Vermont. To wrap it up, I agree with others that this place is overpriced and service is brusque at best. However, if prices had been posted, I would have given this 3 stars easily because I appreciate a direct and no-nonsense approach to running a business. read more

We visited after the recent Honey Festival in town. All baked goods were frozen. No prices were posted. We picked up the lemon pound cake and a 2 pack of cinnamon rolls. The total price was $52. There was a surcharge for using a credit card. The 2 rolls were $18!! We don't mind paying for something that is exceptional however that was not the case. The owner even seemed annoyed by our visit. When we got home we thawed out the rolls. They were only cooked on the outer edge and the inside was raw. Raw! It literally turned to mush. We had to toss it because it was already coated with icing ands couldn't be rebaked. For the second roll we decided to bake it since the first one was raw and the dough was even stretchy. That did absolutely nothing. Guessing since it was half baked it couldn't be rebaked. It could make someone ill with the rawness. I messaged the owner on FB and no reply. We will not be going there again. We visit Las Olas in the winter and frequent upscale bakeries paying $60 for a cake. A cake that is freshly baked and exceptional. The lemon pound cake we bought was actually freezer burnt. Again if the item was fresh baked it's worth the cost. We always support local and small businesses. We understand how ingredients cost a lot, especially these days, but these products are frozen and there is no date on each package to indicate the date it was made. I wish I realized that before I got home. If I lived closer I wouldn't returned the products. A complete disappointment and waste of money. read more

TOURIST TRAP ALERT!!!! We were so excited to try this place but should have read the reviews beforehand. I won't even go into the non existent "customer service". The grumpy owner would rather be anywhere else but his own establishment. There are 8 of us so we purchased 1 apple pie, 1 peanut butter chip cheesecake, 1 small carton of cinnamon rolls and 2 Wilcox ice creams pints. Thank God the ice cream was a hit because the pies were a HUGE disappointment. $120 later and the apple pie was borderline edible and the peanut butter chip cheesecake was so terrible that someone thought we accidentally purchased a dessert that was meant for dogs. We haven't tried the cinnamon rolls yet but not expecting much. All the pies were frozen so makes me wonder if they've all been in the freezer for years. In my mind, I've went back and forth on what I was going to write for my review, and what I was going to rate this restaurant. Some of the reviews of the owner being a scam artist made me skeptical about our visit, so I came cautiously. It was a chilly morning at the start of fall. We'd never visited Vermont before, and this restaurant just seemed like the archetypal dining experience we'd envision a Vermont breakfast eatery to be. We drove out of our way from where we were staying, to try this establishment. When we pulled up, a sign noted that they were only opened on weekends. I'm not sure if this is standard, or just a seasonal rule, but you may want to check the hours prior to your visit. When you get inside, you are downstairs, but don't expect anyone to be waiting there. This is a small 'ma and pa' shop, with a husband and wife team running the place. She seems to do the cooking, while he waits the tables. The owner saw us fairly quickly, and told us to come on up and have a seat. We were lucky enough to beat the crowd. He immediately asked us if we'd like a cup of coffee, in which we replied yes. All the tables were already set up with coffee cups, so he flipped them over and got us started. He gave us a few minutes to look over the menu. I immediately noticed on the front that it states, "$5.00 share plate". My husband and I often share a breakfast because I cannot eat very much. I find this to be a deplorable rule to put into place; this is one of only two restaurants I've ever come across with this caveat. For whatever intention, many couples share for reasons that need not be explained, and to charge someone for sharing a plate is tacky and tasteless. Nevertheless, we decided to order separately to avoid the charge, even though I knew it'd be much more food than I could eat, and we had no way of keeping it fresh since we were mid travel. My husband ordered the apple cinnamon pancakes and closed the menu. The owner asked if he would like to try a glass of homemade hot apple cider. Without asking the price, my husband said, "Sure" (it was $6.95 for a glass of apple cider!) He asked my husband if he'd like his pancakes with bacon or sausage. My husband said, "Bacon" (not aware that it doesn't come with a meat and this was another additional charge). I do realize that this was a mistake on our part, not asking questions, but the owner does slyly have a way of getting you to order more, once you've closed your menu, so be aware. I ordered scrambled eggs a la carte, with Vermont cheddar added to them, and a side of country ham. It took awhile for our food to come out, which we didn't mind. The place is adorable and charming! I absolutely fell in love with the decor, the cleanliness, the music choices overhead; everything about this place was delightful. In the meantime, although not friendly, the owner was efficient about keeping our coffee cups filled. When the food came out, we were definitely wowed! The presentation was stunning! My husbands pancakes were almost too pretty to eat. And according to him, were delicious! At this point, we rated this restaurant a 5 star in cleanliness, presentation of food and taste of food. Prices were a bit high, so we'd rate a little lower on the value, but we're accustomed to paying high prices living outside of Washington DC, so we shook it off. I was fully prepared to highly recommend this restaurant to friends and family...that is until the bill came. Now comes the stingers. Somehow, we missed that they generally only accept cash as a payment method, but were quickly brought up to speed when a party of 4 sitting across from us, went to pay their bill. They were told that there was a minimum of a $3.00 charge to use a credit card. The problem is, this is a variable rate with no cap. In other words, the owner can use his discretion on what he wants to charge you in order to use a card. We heard the entire conversation with the table next to us. They would be paying nearly $20 to use a credit card! My husband and I didn't have enough cash, so we were prepared to just suck it up. When the bill came, I added everything up for myself because other Yelpers noted that he tends to overcharge. Sure enough, he added incorrectly and upcharged us 50 cents. It's not much, but it is deceitful. If every table he serves is paying an extra 50 cents here or a dollar there, he is running a pretty good scam on the side. With the share plate fee, the unlimited credit card fee (luckily we only had to pay the $3, which is NOT reflected on our original bill) and his deceitful upcharges, he is nickel and diming his customers. Our bill went from $39.45 (which should have been $38.95) plus $3.55 tax, a $3.00 cc fee and a $5.00 tip to $51.00! MAKE SURE YOU ADD YOUR BILLS YOURSELF! I cannot in good faith recommend this restaurant due to the owners fraudulent ways! What a shame because the food and atmosphere are fantastic! read more

Had to chuckle after reading the reviews-unfortunately, AFTER buying a pie. Having worked in my younger years as a waiter, bartender, and manager of bars and restaurants, I think maybe the owner needs some training in all the areas his critics have noted. Grumpy?...yes! Greedy?...yes! I went to buy a pie, so I was prepared to pay a premium price. I should have asked the price upfront, my bad. But I was shocked when he said $32 PLUS a $3 fee. $35 for a pie! The pie was good, have to note that. Still, on our way back to NJ, we stopped at a farm stand in Manchester (Dutton's -highly recommend!) and bought their own raspberry pie for $18. It was better! Its proprietors, Charlie and Sheryl have created a cosy home-like ambiance, employing rustic wooden tables and chairs and then completing the country look with cheerful red and white gingham tablecloths and window valances. Fun decorative wall signs, many featuring witty quotes, line the walls. Some of them will remind you of the virtues of patience. As this tiny place can accommodate no more than 5-8 tables, waiting for a table is the norm if you intend to dine here. The waiting area is on the ground level. Sign in when you arrive and make your presence known to Charlie who will check in periodically. There are several chess sets laid out for waiting customers, this is a great opportunity to hone your chess skills. You will be invited upstairs to the dining room once your table is available. Vermont Apple Pie Company offers an extensive breakfast menu (waffles, French toast, pancakes, eggs any style...). Everything is freshly made in the kitchen by Sheryl. It truly is a family affair with daughter Erica helping out. Ever since our family fell in love with their delicious waffles, we have been coming here whenever we are in the area. Their freshly made Belgian Waffles have a slight crispy exterior while retaining a lovely fluffy centre. Absolutely scrumptious with just Vermont maple syrup, although sides such as fried eggs, sliced smoked ham, crispy bacon, home fries and sausage patty make great accompaniments. Service severely struggled. Food was okay. Price didn't match quality or level of service. However, large portions and fresh ingredients... We were excited to try this country Vermont setting for breakfast after reading the reviews and seeing the pictures of the food in other posts. Luckily we were not in a rush, We entered and gave our name to the hostess and waited to be called and when we were sent up the stairs to the dining room, we found many open tables. Empty tables sat vacant throughout our hour and half breakfast while other parties waited outside and in line to get a table. We had viewed the menu and picked out what we wanted while we were waiting and so when we sat at our table, we were ready, but the (only) server was not ready and overwhelmed. we started by ordering coffee and water and that took much too long. The water didn't arrive until about 30 mins later, until after our meals arrived, even though we asked for it each time the server visited our table. We noticed other tables waiting for water and coffee (and service) throughout the meal. We were given a daily specials menu which didn't exactly match the dry-erase board at the entrance/waiting area, and wasn't given it when we asked to view the menu while we waited. We placed our order and after a not too long wait 1/2 our order was brought out to the dining room but sent to the wrong table, and back it went, to sit in the window while the other tables meals were all served. I liked my meal, fresh tasting, and plenty of food but the lack of drinks and service and the severe wait before, during, and after we were done took my rating from 4 down to 2 stars. Overall, we probably would not return or recommend it to others BUT the place has potential... They just need to have a 2nd server or have the help standing around the kitchen (playing on their iPhones) come out and help bus and set tables, fill drinks, etc. the server needs to be a bit more personable and work on the hospitality part of serving. This is the cozy breakfast experience you want to fulfill your Vermont get away weekend. The place is small but very quaint. Decor is home-y, with pictures of the owners family, I think. Alot of rustic touches. The food is out of this world. Portions are big and everything is made fresh. You can taste the difference. I don't think you could go wrong with any thing you order. I suggest pancakes, but that's a personal favorite. I had the wild blueberry ones. The only two negatives I see... First, since the place is tiny, with literally 6 tables, you will be waiting a long time if it's busy. We went when it was slow, so we got a seat immediately. The place filled up fast though... all 6 tables. I suggest you keep your group between 2 and 4 people. Any more and you might be waiting over an hour, easy. The second complaint.... the waiter... an older gentleman, wasn't the most warm and inviting. He may be the owner. It seemed like he could benefit from hiring a bubbly young waiter or waitress. He does not give you the warm and fuzzies. He's not rude, but you may feel like he doesn't have time for you. Be prepared to wait for water or extras, as he seems to do all the work himself. After a 4-hour drive from NYC, my bf and I arrived in Ludlow, VA, ready to check-in to our room at the Castehill. We made it there 2 hours earlier, so there was no other choice than to use the time to put an end to the disturbing growls from our tummies. The night before our departure, I read rave reviews about this restaurant. The resort also did ample advertisement for them, so we figured why not give it a try? First thing I noticed when we pulled up was the cute exterior. Like many restaurants within the vicinity, the place resembled a house more than a business. Once we stepped foot into the doorway, I smelled and spotted PIE. Yummay! The interior and decor were absolutely adorable, with red checkered table cloths, cute sayings on the walls, rustic furniture and an old charm. My bf and I ordered a platter with eggs, toast and home fries, as well as the banana pancake platter that came with eggs, sausage patties and homefries. The pancake can feed a family of 6, but was extremely moist and full of flavor. The eggs were cooked well and homefries were well seasoned but I must say, a bit on the dry side. We were starving when we sat down, but the pancake still defeated us. It was THAT big. If you're up for generous portions, good coffee, at a charming restaurant in the middle of nowhere, you should come here without a doubt. I never wrote a review but after being treated by the owner. I had to Me and my boyfriend arrived with time to spare. We got there and were told to wait a little. We get upstairs there was only one table of five people there. So quick service? No. We we seated and ignored from start to finish. I asked for an iced coffee came out hot but it was good. My boyfriend asked for his drink several times. In the meantime the one other table was helped numerous times. The owner as per other reviews is absolutely, wholeheartedly a crab. Extremely unpleasant. Ruined the vibe for me. He did offer me another free refill of my coffee but I was already angry. I ordered the sunrise which was spectacular especially the pancakes my god. Although the home fries were awful though( rock hard bits of potatoes) boyfriend got the bagel sandwich. The bill was expensive but the prices are listed. Maybe I should remind you that a tip is based on service. We gave the minimum expected amount for a tip, then he ran outside and banged on the side of my car saying that we had to give a bigger tip. The entire meal, he was slow and we had to ask multiple times for things he forgot about like SYRUP. How can you forget syrup at a breakfast place?! He was slow the entire time and when it came to chasing us down for the tip, he finally picked up the pace. CON Artist! Have never been so scammed by a restaurant in my life. Grumpy server, okay food. But this is not where the scam is. He asked if we were on a trip and once he confirmed that this was our last stop before we headed home, this is where his con starts. The bill came and the total was $125 for a party of 6. Now, how did that happen with $12 waffles or $15 meals Max per person? By fudging up the bill, having an inflated sub total and charging a 25% sales tax. And no, that is not a typo. He actually charged a 25% sales tax on top of the inflated sub total. Our actual total was $92 but he marked the subtotal as 100. By the way, cash only so you cannot even dispute the charge of you didn't look at the check before you get home. So definitely do not recommend this place. **You will never find a more Expensive Breakfast in Vermont than this place** The problem here was that every review spoke highly so my expectations were at a high level until we got there and read their pricey menu. Highlights or Low-lights--- This restaurant is part of their house, so beware when using their bathroom, one of their sons just go down using the shower. Comfy and clean looking (not the guy from the shower lol) Not the most friendliest owners I've ever met The food came out at a reasonable time so we were pleased The menu offer a nice variety of breakfast items from eggs to Belgian waffles and Burritos as well as Specials! What put me off was the price of the food/drinks (even higher than NYC prices) and the service. There was only one other table besides us and the service was pretty much night vs day. The other table had warm smiles and conversations (including free pie) while we got nothing. My chicken and waffles was a bit on the soggy side. My fiancee stumbled across this local establishment while searching for local breakfast joints while we stayed at the Castle Resort and Spa for Valentines day weekend. The wonderful part about this place was the fact that it was a mom and pop breakfast only establishment. The owners built the premise around this and decorated it accordingly. There were plenty of signs about $.05 ice-cream and candy sales as you entered. The tables and chairs were made to feel like a quaint picnic scene while the seating area itself felt like my mothers home. Before ordering we picked out some fancy drinks. My fiancee ordered a homemade apple cider which tasted amazing while I ordered a hot coco. Both were served with a fancy display plate. (See pictures for details) Afterwards we proceeded to order our food. I ordered The Hen which was a waffle with the middle cut out for the eggs to be placed in, 3 strips of bacon and home fries. My fiancee ordered chicken and waffles with home fries on the side. The portions were large and filled us up for the day. However, not everything is without there issue and there were several. We were interested in picking up a homemade apple crumble pie and while finishing up overheard the owner offer another couple a free slice of pie since they were on the fence about which one they wanted. Of course this got us interested and inquired about the pie's. However, no such offer was extended to us leading my fiancee to conclude the owner is racist as she was the only Asian there out of the 6 couples we say come and go. The food I ordered tasted great but was dry as it had no syrup on it at all and there was none on the table for me to use. I ended up drinking all of my coco and water to get it down. Oh and I wasn't offered a water refill. On top of this the description of the food stated that the eggs would be placed in the hole in the middle of the waffle which it was not. This was a little disappointing to say the least. Finally the price of the meal turned out to be $50+ prior to the tip. Spent a long weekend in Vermont and stumbled upon this place while driving around. It was so quaint and adorable and is actually this family's house converted into a small restaurant. The smell of the pies is welcoming from outside and we had to venture in to see what options they offered. We tried a slice of their apple pie and knew right away we needed to order one to take home. The owner and his wife were so friendly and were willing to make us a custom order to pick up the next day on our way home. Since we were going to come pick up the pie anyway, we decided to have breakfast there that next morning. The food was amazing and all fresh-made. We even got to go into the kitchen and see the magic in action. What I like most about this place is that it is very cozy and homey feel; like it was just like a living room that was converted into a dining room. The people are very welcoming. They are also real attentive to our needs, refills on our drinks and a status of our food order even without us saying a word. Their portions are huge. I ordered one of their specials, the lazy hen. And I barely finished it. My friend ordered chicken and waffles, it's like a meal for 2 people instead of one. If you're coming from a nearby slopes, I highly recommended this place! My girlfriend and I was looking for a "mom and pop" shop home made Vermont style and apple pie was the perfect place..! We loved the food and the service so much we came here 3 days in a row..! The food quality was excellent we had omelette with veggies and cheese and pancakes and French toast to share They are not cheap with the food or ingredients and our breakfast was worth every penny that was spent..! On the last day we got the apple crisp for our Super Bowl party and everybody that had a piece said that it was amazing and best apple crisp they ever had..! This place is absolutely amazing. Please take a look at my photos & let the food speak for itself. The gourmet omelets prepared for us were not only delicious, but beautiful too, spilling over with the most vibrantly colored zucchini, spinach, chopped tomatoes and hot melted cheese. Everything that we ordered was created from the freshest ingredients and obviously plated with love & care. The owner, who was also our server, was quite friendly, and upon chatting revealed that the chocolate milk is ordered directly from a NH farm - it was so GOOD. We also couldn't resist sharing a piece of the hot, homemade apple crisp despite it being only breakfast-time, and it was also wonderful. The dining room itself was quite small - very country cozy. It's decorated adorably. The business is family-owned and operated, and they are doing an incredible job! Any amount of time spent waiting for a table to open up would be worth it :) read more

My girlfriend and I went here for breakfast and were thoroughly amazed. We both had our own omelettes and shared an apple cinnamon pancake (picture #13). The service made us feel completely at home. In fact, it is a husband and wife operation...out of their own house. They were both very friendly and extremely creative. For instance, the pancakes have grated apples in them, making for a fluffy and moist treat...the cinnamon powder and homemade whipped cream on the side made it even better. We are only up in the Green Mountains for the weekend but we'll be at Vermont Apple Pie Co. for breakfast again tomorrow! read more

Vermont Apple Pie is definitely a one of kind type of place. Most people think their primary specialty is pie making, but the reality is that this restaurant makes a breakfast that is unparalleled. Its hands down the best you can get in the area (close second goes to the hatchery). They serve everything from omelets to pancake specials that change daily. The owner is also the head chef and a lot of the time he will also take orders and serve customers. Hes a very personable guy. Overall, Vermont Apple Pie does a great business especially for not being centrally located right inside Ludlow, VT. Usually definitely have to wait for a little while during ski season (they only have 6-7 tables), but its well worth it. read more

Extremely overpriced, even in today's econo my, especially since the cheesecake was frozen...

We're from NY so there's plenty of brunch spots that are great. This is the best breakfast I've ever had! The waffles were thick, the bacon thick and crispy and the eggs were perfectly cooked! The owners do the cooking and serving and they were very attentive. Amazing! Will be back next time we're in VT. read more

Breakfast here is very scrumptious and down home. It feels a little like eating in someone's house, because I think perhaps you are! There are photos of the family/owners all through the years, and father and daughter were baking pies when we stopped in for breakfast. Being off season, we were the only folks in the place. The character and charm weren't lost on us, but neither were some of the religious bits up on the walls (last supper-ish art). The food was incredible, the service warm, friendly, and helpful. Highly recommended for breakfast around the Ludlow area! read more
