[TL;DR ---- cavity turned into root canal within 1.5 wks. wanted credit to root canal (about 45 bucks). office refused in a shady way] Alafaya Dental Care was recommended by a friend of mine. ACTUALLY, it was more like 4 friends. If 4 for your friends go to see the same dental office, you would think, "Wow, I guess they are doing a great job!". Well, maybe I'm the outlier but hear me out. I confess. I was one of those that didn't have insurance for awhile so I didn't have the opportunity to see the dentist a lot and thus, I got some work to do on my teeth. I understood I would be spending a pretty penny on my teeth after neglecting for awhile . My first visit here -- I got my treatment plan for cavities and some deep cleaning. Cool Cool. Schedule me. My second visit -- Alright one side of the teeth was scaled and planed and a cavity was filled. A deep one, I was told. My third visit -- (about 1.5 wk after my 2nd visit) more cleaning and hey Doc, my tooth hurts on the cavity that was a deep filling. Doc says, okay *taptap*, it look likes it needs a root canal. I'm thinking over here, wow, ok, I'll bite the bullet since it hurts like a mutherferrrr. Then I was thinking wait a minute, I DID PAY for the cavity which she filled a week and a half ago (out of pocket, maybe 40-50 bucks at the most, rest was by insurance). I kindly asked the front desk lady, would it be possible to have my cavity payment applied to my root canal since I had just got it done? Literally. She's wavering and not knowing what to tell me, but says something to the effect like, it seems reasonable but let me ask the doctor. She goes back there and says the Dentist can't be reached WHILE the Dental Assistant that was in the same room, comes out and scribbles "no discount" on the my treatment paper, and slides it back to the front desk lady, WITHOUT acknowledging me. The front desk lady flips over the paper but never tells me if they were able to apply the credit. OKAY.... That was a Tuesday. Thursday comes around and I called the office. Another front desk lady answers the phone, I explained to her the exact situation of how I needed a root canal after 1.5 wks of filling and I just want a credit of what I paid for it. She didn't think like I was crazy or psychotic for asking and said it sounds logical but let me ask. I call again that same day to get the answer and the lady that checked me out last time and schedules me all the time gives me the answer. The answer was No. She says the discount cannot be given and in her exact words, "the work was performed". She assured me she had ask the dentist and that was the dentists choice. After that phone call, I contemplated of getting the work done by them further but I REFUSE to go back there. I no longer want work to be done on my teeth by people that cares more about 45 dollars than a patient that they want to see further and really care about. To quote what I said earlier, I am looking for a doctor that treats patients with, "care, respect, honesty and compassion when something comes up". This dental practice did not follow the personal qualities I'm looking for. They made me feel dumb and was not being honest when they already decided what they were going to do. The 1 star was for the hygenist because she seem genuinely nice and cared. The office was also clean, 2nd star. The outside of the building is beautiful, super clean, and they've thought about everything -- including handicap parking and a ramp for easy access. As soon as I walked in, I was greeted so warmly by the front desk staff. They even gave me a little tour of the office, which was spotless, modern, and so welcoming. There are massage chairs in the waiting area (yes, massage chairs!) and a cute drink bar with coffee, tea, water -- such a nice touch while you wait. And this was a first for me -- they gave me a personalized welcome bag with my name on it, a mug, and some little goodies! I thought that was so thoughtful. Once I was called back, they took high-quality images of my teeth and showed everything right on the screen so I could actually see what they were talking about. The hygienist and dentist walked me through everything, explained any concerns, and were super transparent the entire time. I've never had a dentist be that thorough or patient-focused before. Another thing I loved -- there's a TV with headphones in each exam room so you can watch Netflix or whatever while they work on your teeth. It makes such a difference and really helps you relax! The whole staff was so kind and took the time to get to know me. They even shared fun little facts I told them with the dentist so it felt super personal and not rushed at all. What really stood out was their honesty -- no pressure, no upselling unnecessary treatments. They let me know what was optional and reassured me nothing urgent needed to be done. Plus, they cleaned my retainers for free -- just another thoughtful little touch. Pricing was super clear too -- they went over everything before doing any work so there were no surprises. We wished their quality of service might deserve the extra charge but unfortunately, my wife ended up losing a tooth that could have been saved because of failed treatment there. In 2022, my wife received a root canal treatment and crown installation from Dr. Schmitt at Alafaya Family Dentistry to address a decayed tooth. The crown came loose and fell off within just six months. On our return visit, Dr. Ross reattached the crown at no additional charge. However, a recent examination at another dental practice revealed significant decay beneath the crown, alongside an X-ray indicating a small crack between the crown and the remaining tooth (see the attached X-ray photo). The dentist explained that this crack led to the decay, which was inevitable given the circumstances, ultimately rendering the tooth unsalvageable, and that it was the responsibility of the previous dentist who did the root canal treatment - Alafaya Family Dentistry. We are now faced with the prospect of replacing the tooth with an implant or bridge. It's really upsetting that a routine root canal treatment should fail not once but twice, especially since we paid so much more for their services.

I ended up having gum line issues/bleeding/ and color mismatch from my prior crowns and 3 years after the procedure I ended up back in Dr. Michaelson's office. Once I decided to move forward with my crown revision, he was very honest and straightforward with how I could best achieve the look I wanted, what my future with the crowns looked like, and timeline. They were also up front and transparent with pricing. Even though they are on the higher end price wise, the lab they used did an amazing job to match the color and it has now been over a year and my teeth have held up nicely. I was also very nervous for how long the temporaries needed to be on because of how bad temps have been in the past but these temporaries were not bad at all. For general dental visits: all of my cleanings were awesome/pain free and you could tell that they knew how to be careful with maintaining integrity of any dental work. Only experience that I feel like could be improved upon was X-Ray process. I have never been that uncomfortable from just getting dental images but they also got the most in depth photos I've ever had done so that could be why. Lastly, they always tried to accommodate my schedule and fit me in when they could. Overall, I highly recommend Dr. Michaelson and his team. If I did not move I would still be going for my annual exams and any additional work.
