You will not believe that you are in Florence Arizona when you eat here. Easily the jewel of the entire town (for MANY miles around), there is not a single thing to dislike about Mount Athos. Pete is the epitome of class and customer service and truly cares about his patrons, tending to every detail with the utmost sincerity. The food is amazing. I always have the chicken Alfredo which is the best I've had since I was last in Italy. My wife changes it up from time to time but normally gets the liver and onions which is cooked perfectly every single time (not an easy task). I absolutely cannot recommend this place any more highly and encourage anyone to make whatever drive you have to make to enjoy Mount Athos. Undoubtedly the best restaurant in Florence, AZ. One of the best Greek restaurants we've ever eaten in, and we've eaten in several Greek restaurants in Europe. Food is uniformly done to perfection, and the management seems truly concerned that the diners are satisfied. A very pleasant change from the mediocre service and indifferent attitude that seems to be the norm nowadays. We've eaten there several times over the course of a couple of years and have yet to have a meal that we didn't consider excellent. For a real treat, order the Saganaki -- Cheese doused with liquor then set aflame at your table. Extinguished with lemon juice and served with pita bread, it's a memorable experience! read more

One star for this food, it was cooked Four of us came from Mesa after, reading the article in the AAA magazine. The food was not very good. Gyro was OK did not eat it all, the lamb plate tasted like mutton. The spinach wrap was tasteless. The pork gyro was left half eaten on the plate. I did take the uneaten mutton home with me. Sliced it thin, Garlic, onions, Rosemary and marinated it in red wine for 6 hours. Sauteed some carrots and tomatoes, after they were done put the meat in the veggies warmed it very slowly. The taste of an old sheep was gone. Dolmas were tasted as though they came from a supply house catering to restaurants. The salad dressing was a commercial from a jar, thick and flavorless, the salad was gross. I will drive by but never go in, I am accustomed to eating in great eateries from San Francisco. Came here with my mother-in-law. We had breakfast and let me tell you.... Those were some of the best eggs I've had since my mom was alive. We both like our dishes. The waiter was very attentive. Not sure how this place became so highly rated. It's for sure an odd mix of American food and Greek dishes. The Greek salad came with one cucumber slice, two small tomato slices and three olives. I have yet to find an authentic Greek Restaurant in the surrounding area. Ordered the Greek salad, the dressing was so so. No Greek potatoes. How can you have a Greek restaurant that does not serve Greek potatoes? I asked the waitress and she said the area would not support Greek potatoes, but I could order french fries. What a bummer. Living in Mesa, we have occasion to visit Florence every so often and my husband and I have seen and heard about this "Greek place" called Mount Athos. Knowing we were going to be in Florence today, I read some Google reviews and it mentioned the owners who are Greek and from NY. Being Greek and from NY myself, I had to stop in and try it today and we were definitely not disappointed! The restaurant is decorated nicely and we were seated in a very soft, comfortable booth and our waitress was kind and took our drink order. We perused the extensive menu and I ordered the hummus appetizer and the Moussaka platter. My hubby ordered the spicy gyro pita sandwich and a side salad. The hummus came out promptly with freshly made warm pita bread, cucumbers, tomato and a Greek Kalamata olive topping. I have to say the hummus was delicious and there was a LOT of it! Easily enough for four people. I'm very picky about my hummus and this was a little lumpy, but still creamy tasting with a hint of garlic and lemon. Not overpowering. Hubby isn't a fan of hummus at all, but decided to taste it and as it turns out, neither one of us could stop eating it. However, they gave us such a large portion that we ended up taking half of it home. Next came our salads, which were lettuce, cucumber, white onion, feta cheese and a lovely surprise of a stuffed grape leaf. Yes, I'm Greek, but I've never been a fan of stuffed grape leaves because they're usually too briny tasting, but I decided to give this one a try and it was delish! It's the first time in my life that I've eaten a stuffed grape leave and wanted more. It was stuffed with rice with cinnamon in it and it was really very good. The only down side to the salad, in my opinion, was that it was served with what looked and tasted like bottled Italian dressing and when I asked the waitress why they didn't serve it with Greek dressing, she explained that most people don't prefer it but that she'd be happy to make some home made Greek dressing for us if we liked. She was very kind and very knowledgeable about the menu (I had asked her a few more questions as well). I had also mentioned that I was Greek and from NY and that I had heard that the owner was too and shortly after, he came out to meet us and chat with us. He was very nice and chatted with us for five or ten minutes, very kind. Then our meals came. My moussaka was a beautiful square about 3" square and served with rice and carrots. The moussaka is made with ground beef and not ground lamb, which is traditional, but it was still absolutely delicious. It has eggplant layered with potato, ground beef, bachamel sauce (heavenly) and a tomato type sauce on top. I have to say that this was one of the most delicious pieces of moussaka I've ever had and I ate the entire piece (I'm still full as I write this three hours later). The bachamel sauce was so creamy and delicious that it's indescribable. I highly recommend getting this dish. The carrots were beautifully cooked in butter, honey and cinnamon and were incredible. My husband kept eating them off of my plate (and he never does that!). I will say though, that the rice was just average. It did have bits of carrots in them, but really not much taste. My husband had the spicy gyro pita and he says it was fresh, the pita bread was fresh baked and the gyro meat was lamb and very tasty. He says it was mildly spicy and it had peppers in it and "some kind of sauce" and it also came with tzatziki sauce. He said it was mostly just meat, not the traditional lettuce, tomato etc. He said there was a little bit of garnish but "not worth mentioning" (bear with me folks, my husband is a man of few words, lol). The fact that both of us cleaned our plates, even after we were full from hummus and salads says a lot. We usually don't eat until we're stuffed, but we did this time. And.....yes, I ordered dessert. Again, being Greek I had to check out the baklava and the galaktobouriko. Again, we were not disappointed. Hubby had the baklava, which is made with walnuts, almonds and honey (I'm allergic to walnuts so unfortunately I wasn't able to try it) and I had the galaktobouriko. Talk about heaven on a plate! The galaktobouriko is INCREDIBLE! The menu describes it as "Soft Semolina Milk Custard Wrapped in Filo Dough With a Honey Syrup Glaze". It was like soft cake/custard rolled up in filo dough with the honey glaze and a bunch of whipped cream and cinnamon on it. Yes, I finished the whole thing. (I can't believe I ate the whole thing). Hubby loved the baklava and he ate all of his as well. Oh, the owner once again came out to chat with us, again, very sweet and kind to us. We told him we'd definitely be back, which we will, even though this is about a 45 minute drive for us, it was well worth it. Both hubby and I highly recommend Mount Athos....whether you live in Florence or not, it's well worth the drive, time and money. I get a bun-less burger (they are homemade and really good) with a side of their sautéed spinach. Had lunch here recently. The chicken gyro was overflowing with chicken, served with coleslaw that looked good (but wasn't). Friendly and efficient service. We visited friends in Florence for this past week and they suggested we go out for Greek and chose Mt. Athos. It had great atmosphere and our server, Jen, was fantastic. She was fast, very funny and explained all our meal selections. At the end of the meal, we were offered Ouzo and Baklava...on the house. Verrrry good food and service. So, I was meeting a friend for lunch here today. I have a ton of dietary restrictions and eating out can be hard. I was looking at the online menu and quickly realizing there was literally nothing I could eat here and figured I'd just have to eat before/after and get an iced tea and visit and no biggie. But I saw burgers, well burgers can be okay if they're made fresh and not pre-seasoned. So, I called them to find out and was told they are fresh but pre-seasoned and made the night before. The sweet lady on the phone went on to tell me the burgers they had, I stopped her and said no worries I can't have them if they're pre-seasoned. She quickly responded that if I gave her my name she could have the cook make a special patty for me without any seasoning last night and it would have my name on it for today. Sure enough, it was done without any seasoning, they were willing to cook it medium rare for me, AND they swapped out the fries for cucumber slices instead (I cannot have fries). Not only did they do all of this but they also acted like it was no big deal and were SUPER sweet about it (many times wait staff get irritated with me, even though I let them know it's for medical reasons and not just me being a PITA LoL, but truly it makes me feel bad and ruins part of the mood). The waitress was great, friendly and very helpful. unfortunately the gyro meat was overdone and I bit into a toothpick., and the humus was watery. My wife meal she said was okay, she had a grilled salmon salad, the salmon was pan seared not grilled.. Now I have to admit I was taken by surprise and the owner apologized for the gyro mishap and took care of the entire bill. We spent an entire evening at Mount Athos Restaurant with my father and his wife. We met George and Pete, the owner and his son and enjoyed a wonderful evening of food and wine. I thought about sending a Thank You card but then I thought HEY a Yelp review would be better!! Hopefully getting them more business :-) We were staying at the Holiday Inn for a wedding with family and they had happened to be catering a Rotary dinner that evening- we started chatting with the chef he asked why we were in town and told him- so he said let me cook for you. Best decision ever!!!! They totally set us up on the back patio with tablecloths and everything!!! Oh My Heck! The food so delicious and beautifully plated- we weren't in Florence, AZ anymore friends!! I hope they know how SPECIAL they made us feel!! Thank You! Thank You! You were the icing on the cake of our wonderful weekend! I wish I knew how to share our facebook pictures of the beautiful food or convey how wonderful this was. As a Pigmenou I was so relieved to have somewhere to go that reminded me of home, The Athos. I usually come with my fellow pigmenous for a General Tso's Gyro or maybe a couple of pints of Pigmenou Lights. The waiting staff was great as well. Thanks so Pete and his team, I had a wonderful wedding weekend in Florence, Arizona! I had both my rehearsal dinner as well as my wedding after-party with Mount Athos. The owner, Peter goes above and way beyond a small business owner expectation. To begin, his pricing is reasonable and affordable. He offered 2 appetizer options, 3 dinner options, and 2 dessert options for my 35-person rehearsal dinner. He also provided alcohol/a full bar, which was a nice touch. During the after-party, Peter taught my aunt and sister how to perform a Greek dance....he is so much fun, accommodating, and nice. During my after party, he was able to keep up with all of the shots and other drinks being ordered, as well as talk to my guests....while working a full day AND staying up until 1:30AM to accommodate our after party. You can tell he and his staff are hard workers, and I never minded giving my money/business to him because he worked admirably for it and only made the best impression the entire time I dealt with him. My wedding chef had to leave due to a family emergency, and Pete came to my venue down the road to ensure the caterers were being overseen and managed properly. I never saw him during my wedding night, but it was nice knowing that things were being managed by Pete without him being entirely in the picture. Again--this is something he just choose to do on his own accord because he was good friends with the caterers and offered his services to them. All of his food is authentic and delicious. His portion sizes are huge and some of my guests even had leftover food to take home that evening for a midnight snack :) I have been to both Italy and Greece, and his food it very authentic (the gyros and chicken linguine being the best!). Oh and one more thing, Pete even brought a meat, cheese, hummus and pita tray to the bridal party room at the Holiday Inn the day of our wedding. This was pre-arranged by my mom, and he delivered the food personally, on time, and again....it was delicious to a constantly-hungry bride and her family. My husband and I went here recently for dinner on a Saturday - we had heard from friends it was the best Greek on the east end of the valley. We both ordered the Greek plate dinner with lamb/beef gyro meat - rice, salad and pita. It was nothing short of superb - the meat unlike any other usual Greek fare - tender and real meat. Everything was good and there were generous portions. Our service was excellent and the atmosphere is good. It is worth the hour drive from our house in Mesa. read more
