I truly appreciated her willingness to accommodate my request. During my visit, there was an unexpected moment when another customer choked on their food. Thankfully, another patron quickly called for help, and the fire department arrived in just five minutes. I am so grateful for the swift response of the firefighters, who handled the situation with professionalism and care. A Greek Tragedy. Joe would be so upset to see what his business has become. We have come several times and chalked the quality up to a fluke or the time of day. Last night's visit solidified for me that it just isn't good here anymore. We used to love this spot, but our dinner last night felt like a series of unfortunate culinary choices: The Dolmades: They arrived sporting a weird, opaque film complete with unexplained chunks. It looked less like a traditional glaze or olive oil and more like a science experiment gone wrong. The Falafel: I'm not sure if these were meant for human consumption or if they were mistakenly harvested from a Lego set. They were minuscule, aggressively overcooked, and packed a random, spicy punch that felt more like a defensive mechanism than a flavor profile. The Gyro: The classic toppings were a bit of a ghost town. It featured zero tomatoes and a generous helping of onions that had definitely crossed over into "spoiled" territory. The only pleasant part of our meal were the spanakopita, which are obviously purchased, not made on site. It's genuinely disappointing to see a reliable favorite slide so far downhill. Here's hoping they can channel a bit of Joe's original standards and turn things around, but for now, we'll be getting our Mediterranean fix elsewhere. read more

I found this place on yelp. While it had both good and bad reviews, I decided to give it a try anyway because I was hungry for a gyro. Everything started off good, the girl at the counter was very nice, I placed my order to go and sat down to wait. It was done pretty quickly. When getting the bag I asked if I could have some extra sauce because I know places like to skimp, I was told they charge for it. Hmmm, oh well ok, I went ahead and got one, 2.00 after tax for one tiny little cup and I mean tiny. Got home and started to eat, so glad I got the extra sauce because it was very minimal and at the very bottom of the sandwich. I've been craving a good gyro for a while now and haven't really found one in the East Valley that hits the spot--until now. I'd heard about Chicago #1 Gyros in AJ, and one day while I was nearby I decided to finally stop in and grab something to go for lunch. The place was pretty quiet (midday during the week), but I was greeted right away with a friendly welcome. They were super accommodating to my special request to have the meat grilled after slicing, and I only waited a few minutes before my order was ready. I just went with the gyro sandwich (no fries), and let me tell you--it tasted exactly like I remembered a great gyro should. The pita was soft and fresh, the portion was generous and fully stuffed with meat (which is what really counts!), and everything was hot and flavorful. If I had to nitpick, I'd say I could've used just a little more tzatziki and toppings, but overall it was delicious. I'll definitely be back to try more of the menu next time. Didn't know the place had changed hands. Saying the owners "skimp" is an understatement! When we were there, they charged for everything, and I mean EVERYTHING. $2.00 for a teensy-weensy cup of some sauce sounds awfully familiar. If they're not charging $4 for napkins, $2 for straws and a $20 refundable deposit on the air you breathe while you're in there, they will soon. The tiny portions sounds exactly like the way a popular burger chain cheats: thin, scroungy little beef pattie, tiny tomato slice, a thumbprint each of catsup and mustard, and a big whopping price. The junk food industry is going to hell fast, powered by owner greed and zero concern for the customers who keep them in green. This place is among the worst. You don't get treated that way in Chicago. We keep imagining how much more fun eating will be if all these crap places go broke and be replaced with Ma and Pa places where the owners take pride in what they serve! Ok, this used to be my favorite gyro place to go, but the last two times going there it was so so. Today the pitabread was hard, 2 tomatoes on entire sandwich and you have to order extra Zita sauce cause they won't put enough on themselves so they can charge you more money for extra sauce. And last time in they asked me how it was and very nicely I said you need more zita sauce, and his reply was well everyone orders extra and I said, well Hello what does that tell u right there...omg. Since opening this has been one of my family's favorite places to eat for our Mediterranean fix. The food quality has always been good, but sometimes the service can be a little slower. I only like their gyro meat and baba ganoush. Portions are very small. Especially for the price. But I go back when I want baba ganoush. The counter guy has some kind of attitude. Whenever I ordered something he would say "I'm sorry what was that?" On more than one occasion like I don't speak English or something. I don't have an accent at all. So what I say gyro like geero or sometimes heero or even yeero. I asked a Greek man once and he said all are acceptable. And when I said babaganoush, which isn't a common word, I just know I like it and that's what I want, the kid looked at me like I was actually speaking Greek. After waiting on my food I looked at the menu and noticed I could've purchased a hotdog and fry separately and paid $6.70. On a random note I decided to stop in here and finally try this place. I have been missing out! Today I had their #9 Philly Cheese Steak and a side of fries with drink for about $15.00. They have many vegetarian options as well. When I came in at about 3pm it was fairly quiet 1 other person dining in. Pleasant seating area and it was very clean. They also have a few patio dining areas outside. Looks like they used to have a bar but that area is not being used. However with my visit today I was very satisfied and surprised to see how great this local spot really is! The Staff were friendly as well. The gyro had very little sauce and just a few onions and two small pieces of tomato. I also ordered spanakopita. It was a 3-in triangle about a half inch or less thick looked fried no layers of Philo spinach feta were discernible. Plus it was stale and inedible. What a fantastic hole-in-the-wall I am so sorry I have been missing! It's unfortunate this pandemic is taking place, but this gem is SO worth supporting for pickup orders! I can't decide for the life of me when it comes to Mediterranean cuisine- it's ALL good! But, I opted for the combo platter, a side of spanakopita, hummus, pita & both flavors of baklava. Absolutely ALL of it was delicious! They also offer Chicago style dogs, gyros & burgers. They cook everything on the spot, as it's ordered. So everything was entirely fresh off the grill. Their presentation & packaging of to-go was perfect. The food was still piping hot as I got it home. And the quality/quantity was also more than my expectations! Plenty of a serving, definitely enough to make 2-4 meals out of it (in my opinion). So, I about did a double-take when I got the total- but it is worth it. I appreciate they provide a generous serving of basmati rice (my favorite!) and a plentiful salad. What makes the salad perfect- they don't drown it in dressing to sog. Lightly dressed for flavor & still crisp after sitting & transport. While I feel like the portions of meat were a little weak... we are also experiencing a shortage at this time. And what was provided definitely tasted great & was cooked to perfection. I just wish a side of the traditional sauce was offered or provided, otherwise it's a little dry. But the pitas were warmed, soft & fluffy. Hummus has excellent flavor & consistency. The spanakopita is a little "flat" compared to what I've had elsewhere, but also very good! Plenty of spinach to round it out. I just especially love the baklava! Both the almond and pistachio flavors are SO good! It's a definite must. I'm excited to come back after the quarantine is over! They have a great, cozy spot with a nice dining area, full bar & tv for entertainment. Very clean and tidy- and the staff are fantastic! Tried this place today since it was close by. The hot dog was pretty decent however the previous comments said the fries were awful! Well I have to agree, possibly the worst fried I've ever had. Asked for my fries to be made we'll done...what I got were fries that weren't even close to being prepared properly! Not what I expected for $7.50! It gets better....my wife ordered an Italian beef for $12.50. Great big piece of Italian bread but really wondered "Where was the Beef?" Oh and her fries were just as bad as mine were. So with drinks, two sandwiches and fries I dropped $27.00 there. The upside is we will NEVER GO BACK THERE..... Not sure what they don't understand when you ask for the fries to be made we'll done?
