I am embarrassed for this hospital and its staff. I feel bad for anyone who has to be treated here. I have never been to a more unprepared, unprofessional, and literally dangerous hospital in my life. I left this hospital with more pain, stress, and frustration than when I went into it. Avoid at all costs. A 14 year old passionate about growing up to be a nurse or Dr. could have given me a more caring and educated experience than the sad joke that I was just subjected to. read more

I tripped and broke my elbow while on a cruise in Canada and luckily made it back to the ship to be evaluated. The ship's doctor told me that surgery would be necessary and started the process to have me seen by the ER in Bar Harbor, our port for the next day. The Port Agent drove me to the hospital where I was registered and brought to a bed in the ER. A doctor came pretty quickly and ordered x-rays. He then called for an orthopedist who confirmed surgery would be necessary but it could wait until we were home in California. I was treated very kindly by Mount Desert Island Hospital. read more

They have absolutely no concept of trauma informed care. They are undereducated when it comes to any sort of trauma care and compassion. In fact they not only don't know anything about it but they make it worse with their immovable attitude and their threats. It's absolutely inexcusable what patients with trauma have to go through at the hands of a hospital that is supposed to help. read more

One star because I have to give a rating. My husband took my son to the er. While he was there he gave them his Maine drivers license and military ID (as when you have military insurance that is your insurance card) to scan into the system for insurance purposes. A month later we received a bill from them, clearly showing they did not bill our insurance. Okay a bit annoying, since we gave that to you, but no big deal I'll call and verify what's going on. I got the most belligerent man in the phone. Telling me we did not provide the insurance information at the time of visit, okay..... However once I gave it to him, he continued with his attitude demanding more information, the insurance claims department address and phone number, which I didn't have. He very rudely told me it is on my insurance card. When I explained I don't have an insurance card, but that it is my military ID and that all I've ever had to provide at civilian offices, was sponsor information. I told him that I have been to civilian doctors and emergency rooms before and have never been asked for this information so I don't have it. He called me a liar. When I asked to speak to someone else who might understand what I am saying he said anyone else is going to say the same as him. I ended up hanging up, I googled the information he was demanding, called back. (I would like to point out that I found the information he asked for by just typing in my insurance companies name which I had provided for him) I received a different person, female, not as rude, but definitely needing a course in how to speak to people. She kept saying the address I was providing was wrong (even tho it was exactly what I told the man and he accepted). Three addresses later, she was ready to talk to me. (Btw the only way they could've had that old address is if they had our insurance, as we have had issues with our insurance changing to our new address). I gave her the information her fellow rude employee said he needed. I will not ever go to this hospital again, simply because of their billing department. I have to say I don't mind that someone doesn't know something about my insurance. I'm sure with all the insurances out there it's impossible to know everything. I do know what it is to work at a small medical office and having to look up information to properly bill insurance companies. Many a time I have had to google the exact information he was asking for. If I had been spoken to with respect and honesty. I simple would've said well could you hold a moment and I'll google it, as I don't have that information. And whereas I don't understand why he couldn't do the exact thing I did, that isn't what bothers me. What bothers me, is that I was spoken to with such rude disdain and the fact that I was called a liar. read more

No one wants to review a hospital, but life happens! I was brought here after breaking my leg hiking in Acadia, and the staff were amazing. People took really good care of me, gave me privacy and also attention, and were generally really supportive and skilled. My surgeon was awesome and has been following up with me since my return to Boston. During my overnight stay, the food was a highlight - even getting seafood chowder for lunch! If you have to come here, know you're in good hands. read more

Following a fall on Dorr mountain on June 29, 2023 I was seen by the staff of the emergency Department at MDI hospital. I can't say enough about the care I received from the minute I came through the door until discharged It was a positive experience. Our time in Bar Harbor to celebrate our anniversary was cut short by my injury , we returned home to Saratoga Springs the following day and I am scheduled for surgery to repair a torn patellar tendon that was expertly diagnosed by Dr. Damien Flowers. The Bar Harbor community is fortunate to have such a great facility for their care and as a visitor to the area I was grateful for the care I received. I am a nurse and i am critical of care at facility's that are often understaff. Not so of MDI hospital. Thank you to everyone that participated in my care! read more

My daughter was a patient at this hospital some time ago and had a traumatic experience with the outpatient therapy services. Not only did I feel her care was not taken seriously but the specialist, Ryan M. was such a creep. I would not recommend this place to anyone! Seriously- make the drive to Portland. read more

Not many options for urgent care on the island so we didn't know what to expect when we visited the hospital for a minor wound which occurred while riding bikes in acadia. Staff provided Excellent service and we had little to no wait time to see the dr. Staff followed up with a callback a few days later to check on our progress. Wish all hospitals offered this attention to patient care. Excellent! read more

Going to the ER during your vacation is never fun, but I was so happy with the treatment I received at MDI Hospital. I didn't know it, but I had mono and it hit me really hard during our annual Bar Harbor trip. My symptoms were so bad that we decided an ER visit was necessary. Despite being a small hospital, MDI Hospital had an incredible staff of nurses and doctors who make me feel less nervous right away. We wound up visiting them twice and thanks to an IV and a couple of prescriptions, I started to feel better. The doctors were also treating a hiker with a badly broken arm, so they have an ER that can handle whatever comes their way. Thanks MDI Hospital! read more

We had no more than started our vacation and my companion fell and injured her finger badly! We knew we needed an ER, and this was the only option. They greeted us warmly, and my friend was instantly taken out back to be seen by the nurse while we waited for the doctor. I've never been in an ER where I wasn't waiting for hours to be seen! The nurse was friendly and efficient. The PA arrived and he ordered an Xray. He was pretty matter of fact and we left wondering if more should have been done but they gave us some supplies to get through the weekend, and we were off in 2 hours. We were clearly there in the "off season," but it's nice to know that there's an efficient ER available if you have an accident on your vacation. read more
